Here's the story of the house:

DALTON, Ark. (AP) - Black River Technical College in Pocahontas is restoring a historic home near Dalton on Arkansas 93.

Jan Ziegler, vice president for development at the college, says the Rice-Upshaw House is likely the oldest log structure in the state still standing on its original foundation. A sister structure, about a mile west on the west side of the Eleven Point River, is a few years younger, and it too is on its original foundation.

The college is overseeing the restoration of both structures and will use the historic structures in its educational programs. Various grants are being used for the work.

Tree ring data shows that the Rice-Upshaw House was built in 1828 of logs that were felled in 1826 and 1827.

I think it's such a cool story and I wanna try to document the restoration with photos. I created an album here and it contains a photo of the house that I took today (8/3).

Bobby and I picked over 7 lbs. of blackberries today and we made 7 1/2 pints of blackberry jam tonight! First time I've ever made it, but it set up nicely and all of my jars sealed!

Current mood:  grumpy
Last Saturday, while we were cutting wood, seems that I got into a patch of poison ivy.  I saw it and thought I was staying away from it, but I guess not.  I took off from work early Thursday and got a shot, but it's not working as well as usual. The rash is spreading and still itchy.

Current mood:  tired

We got up to the place about 10 this morning. Michael & Manda came along in their truck and we dropped off the check for fire protection on the way. Our address is 4068 Hwy 166 N, by the way.  Larry, Steph, Emma & Rachel came up. Brittanie was in a ball tournament. Connie came up soon after, but didn't stay long. Donny & Shandy came up later. We ended up cutting 3 loads of wood and Michael got almost a trailer load of metal. After everybody left, Bobby & I went riding around the back woods. At one point we stopped and Bobby got off the 4-wheeler and turned around facing me. We sat there no more than 5 minutes and I heard something. We whispered a bit and 3 deer walked right up on us! One of them smelled us and blew loudly. All three ran off. We walked up the hill quietly to see if we could see them again, but they were gone.

Tomorrow I'm going grocery shopping early and then Bobby is gonna help me get the yard sale stuff out and ready.

I took lots of pictures of the new place but I'll only post 2 here.

That's the knoll that we plan to build on. The cedars will come out and where they are will be part of our back yard.

That's the view from where our front porch will be. The trees on the far right will come down. If you look closely, you can see the highway just this side of the tree line.

Current mood:  tired

We closed on the property yesterday. It's all ours! Bobby bought a new 4-wheeler today and we broke it in riding around our new place. Mike was out there getting his horses and yesterday he told us that he's seen a 9-point in there. We jumped up one today, but all Bobby saw was the "flag", so we don't know if it was a buck or a doe.

Discovered a spring and a "wet weather" creek in the woods today. Talked more about where to put the house. Went muddin' and got my good sneakers dirty. Hope they come clean.

Yesterday I had a touch of that flu bug that's going around. Derrick let me go home early and I piled up on the couch most of the day. Kept taking the Coricidian HBP and I think I've headed it off. I don't feel completely better (I'm sure the 2 hours on the 4-wheeler in the cold isn't gonna help), but I feel a lot better than I did when I left work at 9 am yesterday morning.

I had ordered a couple of Valentine cakes from Heather (through Manda) and Manda brought them to me about 8 or so this morning. They were really good and didn't last long. Bobby sent me flowers.  They were so pretty!

I went to Wal-Mart and got my new sewing machine. Not the one I'd picked out online, because they didn't have that model. I got the $95 Singer and I really like it. Very easy to use. I finished my second quilt block and sewed the first two together. Not perfect, but eh, it'll work. 98 more to go until my King sized bedspread is done.

Brock called. Apparently the guy who is selling us the 52 acres is out of town and won't be back for at least another week. Makes me so mad. I want this to get finalized and done. We have to go to Brock's office tomorrow and sign papers to extend the closing date.

If I get time, I'll post pictures of my flowers and my quilt blocks tomorrow.

Hope everybody had a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Just to keep all of you in the loop -

I have a drs. appt. Tuesday with Dr. Dickson, my orthopaedic surgeon. The NSAIDS he's perscribed in the past don't work, so I'm gonna see if he'll give me something stronger.

Also, I'm still working at SC Christmas. Looks like they'll keep me. The AFLAC lady came by Friday and I signed up, so now Bobby and I at least have SOME sort of accident insurance.

We're meeting a real estate agent this afternoon to look at a piece of property just North of Supply. It's 52 acres and has a beautiful spot to build on. Cross your fingers that this is the right one. I'm so ready to get out of town.

I'm sure I don't say it enough, but I love all of you very much.
