Got sick of MySpace and Imageshack being shit.
Go to www.mattwpbs.com and click on photos. Working on getting older ones up too, but they all be on there from now on instead of here. I'll figure out RSS or something to let people know when it updates.

The Granada Cinema in Clapham was opened just before the war on 8th November 1937 by the Duchess Of Kent, showing History Is Made At Night and Mr Stringfellow Says No. Leslie C. Norton and H.B. Horner were the architects behind this gorgeous art deco fronted building, with Theodore Komisarjevsky designing the Italian renaissance style interior. The site was previously Battersea Grammer School. As well as films, this 2,475 capacity building put on variety acts. In 1973, the main floor was split into two smaller screens, with the original balcony forming a third large screen. It continued this way for seven years until 1980 when the last films shown were Zombies, Dawn of the Dead, Pressure/Godfather of Hong Kong and Emmanuelle, Queen Bitch.
At this point it was converted back to one large room, and became a Granada Bingo Club (later Gala). The building closed in 1997, and was listed Grade II* in 1999. It's currently being cleared in preperation for conversion.
Anyhow, onto the exploration. This was a spur of the moment one, seeing as the Trapdoor Fuckin' Exit gig in Camden finished earlyish. We weren't sure what we'd find inside, but the first room we entered after the corridor was the main auditorium.

There's these amazing pictures to each side of the stage.

And this huge chandelier above the room.

There were lights on all over the place.

There's a lot of the original polished brickwork around the place.

Looking back across the upper circle.

The entrance hall is still great, in spite of graffitti and vandalism.

And has it's own nice chandeliers.

The rooms overlooking St John's Hill and Plough Lane have some nice windows.

Obligatory toilet shot.

We found a cubby hole with a view out onto the auditorium again.

Coming back through the entrance hall is evidence of the place being cleared.

Then back into the main room, note the portable lights and stuff around the place.

Self shot.

The bingo board has taken the place of the cinema screen.

It was at this point that we were stood in the middle of the stage, with me trying to set up a couple of shots, when we heard voices and movement from the lighted area we'd entered through. This prompted a swift exit stage left into the shadows. We were pretty sure we wouldn't find another way out, so the decision was made to head back out to the stage, quickly get the pictures and then quickly move out through the door. So, took the pictures:

And then it was a quick exit and over the fence.

A really interesting building to explore, and a very lucky exploration.
