5 de Mayo on the Tr3s

This spring we celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Palomar on Thursday, May 3rd so more students and people could experience this event. We had dancers, "floreo de riata", speaker on the history of 5 de Mayo, and Mexican food. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day,  It commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on  May 5, 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is best characterized as a day of celebration to honor a culture that fuses Mexican heritage and American life experience. The reference to the Battle of Puebla is seen as a symbolic cultural link to those who had to overcome significant odds while facing adversity.

March 15, 2007 was M.E.Ch.A.'s first Multicultural Carnival at Palomar College.
A celebration of the different cultures in our college, and everywhere else in our
country, state, & community.
An event started by this M.E.Ch.A., that will surely become a tradition at Palomar and maybe an example for others.

The current Palomar College M.E.Ch.A. did get the chance to personally know Sean O'Shea, but most of us heard stories about him from our advisor John. Stories about his life, education achievements, and what he did for his community. He was a role model, still is, as a leader, activist, student & person. We celebrated his life February 23, 2007 with his family, friends, & M.E.Ch.A.

On behalf of our Multicultural Studies Department and MEChA student leaders we are saddened to inform you of the death of Sean O'Shea. He died in a tragic freeway accident on December 28th, 2006. Sean was MEChA president in 1994-96 at Palomar College . Sean was an amazing student leader and organizer who was committed to the cause of social justice. He led and organized a student march in 1994 to protest the anti- immigrant proposition, Proposition 187, in California. He was very dynamic and charismatic with a great sense of humor and love of his Irish and Mexican heritage and roots He fondly shared how his friends in high school referred to him as a "green bean". Sean transferred to the University of California at Berkeley where he graduated. Sean was one of our most active student leaders here at Palomar and Berkeley and his image is in our famous mural in the former MEChA office room SU-17 which is called, "Adelante MEChA, adelante!" (Forward MEChA, Forward) which was painted in 2000 by Palomar College student muralists. Sean was an inspiring and loving person who placed his family at the center of his life and activities. We will miss you greatly Sean. Our hearts go out to your wonderful family and loved ones who will miss you and feel the loss of such a promising great person. With deep and sincere prayers we will remember you. In gratitude to such a wonderful MEChA leader and service to Palomar MEChA we will remember you in our MEChA student scholarships, which I will propose to set up through our MEChA Alumni and Friends Foundation account to award future student scholarships for MEChA members to be named, The Sean O'Shea scholarships award.
Sincerely,
John Valdez

Palomar College M.E.Ch.A. has been doing this event for 36 years now, and we do it to bring a little happiness to children of the community and to familiarize them with a college campus; hopefully making them strive for higher education in the future. There have been Palomar students who said they remember coming to Palomar College when they were kids to get a toy from the M.E.Ch.A. Christmas party. A beautiful event that will continue for many years.

Saw this site & though I don't agree with some of the other responses to Q's, I find this one funny & true
Seattle weekly: Ask a Mexican

Dear Mexican,

What is it about the word "illegal" that Mexicans don't understand?

Mondo Minuteman

Dear Gabacho,

Take your pick, Mondo. Mexicans don't understand the word "illegal" because:

(a) When paying their gardeners, nannies, busboys, and factory workers in cash (and forgetting to withhold payroll taxes), U.S. employers don't seem to understand the word "illegal," so why should Mexicans?

(b) The Anglo-American trappers and traders whom you and I were taught to admire as tough, self-sufficient frontiersmen and pioneers were among the American Southwest's first illegals. Who are you calling illegal, gabacho?

(c) Presidente Bush's proposal to offer amnesty and a guest-worker program to all illegal immigrants..a move designed to appease his supporters in the business community..means even Republicans don't understand the word.

(d) Whether they buy a fake passport or take a citizenship oath, Mexicans will never be more than wetbacks in the eyes of many Americans, so why bother applying for residency?

(e) The Seattle Times stylebook reportedly requires its reporters to describe as "undocumented workers" the men and women you call "illegal."

(f) Little-known fact: The fragment of poetry on the Statue of Liberty ("Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," etc.) does not, because of a French engraver's error, include Emma Lazarus' rarely cited footnote: "No Mexicans, please." But the real answer is the word itself. "Illegal" is an English word; Mexicans speak Spanish..yet you never hear Mexicans whine that their bosses don't understand such easy Spanish phrases as "pinche puto pendejo baboso," do you?
