In 2005, Jason Mitchell recorded the sessions for what would become Happy Medium's self-titled album. The sessions included a revolving cast of guest musicians, none of whom had played together before. There were no rehearsals before recording sessions, and arrangements for songs were often made up on the spot. Most songs were tracked with all the musicians playing together in the same room. All of these elements give
Happy Medium a spontaneous feel, the work of musicians improvising together with adventurous arrangements. Nick Rossi, who played most of the drums on the album, would stay on to become the full-time drummer for the band, but contributions also included Ben Portwood's bass playing,
The Southtown Avengers' Derek Sandbeck on drums and bass, JAR of
Beatrix*JAR applying some circuit-bent keyboards and cd turntabling, and some amateur trombone from
Shebetty's Casey Prescott. Formerly only heard by friends from hand-burned copies, the album is now seeing a official release from
Lester's Records to be followed up by support shows from the band. Find out more information, including how to order the album online, at
