Frances Wright (September 6, 1795 – December 131852) also widely known as Fanny Wright, was a Scottish-born lecturer, writer, freethinker, feminist, abolitionist, and social reformer, who became a U. It reminds me of how Christopher Columbus died without knowing he found America. Human nature is the concept that there are a set of characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling and acting, that all 'normal' human beings have in common.[1] The branches of science associated with the study of human nature include sociology, sociobiology and psychology, particularly evolutionary psychology and developmental psychology. Philosophers and theologians have also carried out research on human nature. If men were angels, we wouldn't need government. We delegate to our government. Developing the theme further, governments by their very nature, will always abuse the power with which they are entrusted. That is an inalienable fact of life. To that extent, governments are not our friends. They are our enemies, more so our own, which has the capability to do infinite damage. If we could do without governments, the world would be a better place. Since we cannot, we tolerate them, simply because the alternative – of not having a government - is worse. But we the people must recognize that governments are not our friends. We must constrain them, control them, limit their ability to act and ensure that the power they hold is exercised for us, on our terms, not theirs. The government should fear the people, not the other way around. In an effective system, we delegate the powers of supervision and constraint to specialists – just as we delegate growing our food to specialists. The latter are called farmers, the former politicians or, more specifically, parliamentarians. They, the parliamentarians are not – or should not be - the "government". Actually, the better word is "executive", a word not used often enough in this country. The problem we have at the moment – one of many, although this one is important – is that the executive and the parliament are too close. The one draws its members from the other, to the extent that the role of the one is submerged by the other. The roles must be separated, if parliament - our parliament is properly to do its job. This is for us to demand – we are the people and the power is us. When we hear politicians offer their ideas for "reform”, by all means we can and should listen politely. But no politician should be awarded approval uncritically, unthinkingly. It is for us to decide, not them, where the constraints lie. Thus, with "reform" suddenly on the agenda, we cannot and should not allow the politicians to make the running. Inescapably, because their world view is different from ours, they will fashion the constraints and the controls in a way that suits them, not us. If, on the other hand, we choose to lie back and allow them to dictate the agenda, we will not get what we and the generations that follow us deserve. But we will deserve what we get. Give me liberty or give me death. No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The questing before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. The doctrine of the Church as set forth by the Apostles
after the Ascension is in all respects identical with the teaching of Christ
just described. St. Peter, in his first sermon, delivered on the day of
Pentecost, declares that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messianic king (Acts 2:36).
The means of salvation which he indicates is baptism; and by baptism his
converts are aggregated to the society of disciples (Acts 2:41). Though in
these days the Christians still availed themselves of the Temple services, yet
from the first the brotherhood of Christ formed a society essentially distinct
from the synagogue. The reason why St. Peter bids his hearers accept baptism is
none other than that they may "save themselves from this unbelieving
generation". Within the society of believers not only were the members
united by common rites, but the tie of unity was so close as to bring about in
the Church of Jerusalem that condition of things in which the disciples had all
things common (2:44).

The focus is on the gentiles. Me to, it seems. I'm starting
to see the pain of the 1 hundred 77 rejections better. The devil wanted me in

The inner room or cell of the sanctuary, termed also the
"miḳdash ha-ḳodesh" (Lev. xvi. 33; A. V. "the
holy sanctuary"), is known as the "Holy of Holies" par
excellence. As such it comprised that smaller western part of the Tabernacle,
the "mishkan," which was divided off from the remainder of the
meeting-tent by a curtain or veil suspended from four pillars of acacia
overlaid with gold and having sockets of silver (Ex. xxvi. 32, xxxvi. 36, R.
V.). This curtain was woven in four colors: white, blue, scarlet, and purple,
and was made of byssus, i.e., linen. The cell was cubelike in shape, being 10
ells high, 10 ells long, and 10 ells broad. It contained the Ark of the
Covenant (Ex. xxvi. 34; comp. Josephus, "Ant." iii. 6, §§ 4, 5).

In Solomon's Temple the Holy of Holies formed a part of the
house of Yhwh (I Kings vi. 1 et seq.), which was 60 cubits in length, 20 cubits
in breadth, 30 cubits in height, and built of stone (Josephus, "Ant."
viii. 3, § 2: "white marble"), and was divided into two sections by a
partition of cedar-wood with a door covered by a costly curtain (Josephus, l.c.
§ 3; II Chron. iii. 14). The section farthest from the entrance, designated
also as the "debir" (the "oracle" "the most holy
place," I Kings vi. 5, R. V. margin), was 20 cubits high and presented the
shape of a cube. The stone of this inner or hinder part, like the outer room,
was completely hidden with cedar boards carved with knops or gourds and open
flowers and then covered with pure gold. This room must have been without
light. In it was placed the Ark (ib. vi. 18, 19).

In the Second Temple, details of the construction of which
are not preserved in the Biblical documents (Ezra vi. 3 mentions dimensions),
the Holy of Holies was curtained off (I. Macc. i. 22, iv. 51). It was empty,
except for a stone three fingers in breadth on which the high priest deposited
the censer (Josephus, "B. J." v. 55; Yoma v. 2). In Ezekiel's ideal
Temple the Holy of Holies measured 20 cubits in length and the same in breadth
(Ezek. xli. 4). Ezekiel (ib. 21, 23) calls this inner section simply (R. V. "sanctuary"), in contrast to
the "hekal" (= "temple").

In the Herodian Temple the Holy of Holies was not divided
off from the rest of the hekal by a wall, but two curtains, a cubit apart,
partitioned the inner chamber from the outer room. These curtains were richly
wrought. (Sheḳ. viii. 5), and were so
arranged that in order to enter the high priest had to lift them diagonally at
the sides; the outer opening was at the south end, the inner at the north (Yoma
v. 1). The length of the Holy of Holies was 20 cubits. Above both the inner and
the outer rooms was an upper chamber, constructed to enable builders to make
the necessary repairs. A trap-door was above the Holy of Holies, and through
this the workmen were lowered in boxes, to guard against profanation (lit.
"feasting their eyes"). In this upper chamber the location of the two
rooms underneath was marked off (Mid. iv. 5).

According to Maimonides ("Yad," Bet ha-Beḥirah, iv. 1; see Yoma 23a), in the Holy of
Holies of theTabernacle was a stone on which the Ark rested; before it was
placed the flask of manna and Aaron's staff. Solomon made a depression in order

It is generally contended that the Tabernacle represents a
later priestly reconstruction patterned after the Solomonic and Ezekiel's ideal
Temples (see Graf, "Die Geschichtl. Bücher des Alten Testaments,"
Leipsic, 1868; Popper, "Der Biblische Bericht über die Stiftshütte").
The account of Solomon's Temple (I Kings vi.) is also very much involved, and
probably represents various sources. The legislation in P is based partly on
actual practise, partly on theoretical insistences anticipated to a certain
extent in Ezekiel, gradually realized in the Second (Zerubbabel's) Temple and
fully recognized as authoritative in the Maccabean-Herodian-Mishnaic Temple.
According to Büchler ("Die Priester und der Cultus," Vienna, 1895),
during the last period of the Temple's existence certain concessions were made
with latitude for "laymen." On the one hand, the use of the term
"Ḳodesh ha-Ḳodashim" as a synonym for, or a later explanation of,
"debir" (="oracle"), and the application of the same
designation to all the things that were accessible only to the priests, and, on
the other, the uncertainty of the use of the double phrase in Ezekiel (see
above; Smend, Commentary on Ezek. lxi.; Bleek, "Einleitung," 4th ed.,
p. 234), indicate a gradual evolution of the notion that certain places and
things partook of a higher degree of holiness than others. The analysis of the
various passages shows that "Ḳodesh,"
originally designating "property of or reserved for Yhwh," only
gradually came to admit of different degrees. In distinction from all tithes
which are holy those belonging to the priests are further designated as
"miḳdash" (Num. xviii. 29;
comp. ib. viii. 32).

Applied to locality, this distinction in degrees is
noticeable first in Ezekiel. His idea of the ascending scale of holiness is
apparent in his designation of the Temple territory as "Holy of
Holies" in comparison with the surrounding Levitical land (Ezek. xliii.
12, xlviii. 12). This notion pervades the Priestly Code and is determinative of
the later Jewish conception, which ascribes to the land of Israel, the city of
Jerusalem, the different courts and buildings of the Temple, in a fixed but
ascending scale, different degrees of sanctity (Sanh. 2a, 16a;

When I was 15 and worked at Sonny’s, Shane Todd, a UGA
student was a great, great guy. About a decade older, maybe half a decade, he

marriage. Then when they're having a bad day, my 1st blame is
marriage. Very, very likely it isn’t. marriage isn’t the only problem on earth.

When I established this nonprofit ministry in 1996, I called
it Feast of Fire Ministries Inc. I named the ministry after my first book by
the same name. I wanted the proceeds of my book to go back into the ministry
and not to me personally. I also started traveling to spread Revival any way I
can. God (God Almighty) has provided an opportunity of a lifetime to minister
to ministers, help spread Revival fire, and see abundant harvest of souls. In
January 1999 I began to feel that a name change in our ministry would better
serve our purpose and mission. Therefore Feast of Fire Ministries Inc. was then
changed to Partners In Revival Inc. Although, we have now fully developed into
the currently named John Kilpatrick Ministries, we still feel we are partnering
together to see Revival sweep our nation and our churches in all

The testimonies to its authenticity are-Origen [Homily 19, on Jeremiah, vol. 1., p. 185, Edition Huetius], cites it as the letter of Paul to Philemon concerning Onesimus; Tertullian [Against Marcion, 5.21]: "The brevity of this Epistle is the sole cause of its escaping the falsifying hands of Marcion." Eusebius [Ecclesiastical History, 3.25], mentions it among "the universally acknowledged Epistles of the canon"; Jerome [Commentary on Philemon, vol. iv., p. 442], argues for it against those who objected to its canonicity on the ground of its subject being beneath an apostle to write about. Ignatius [Epistle to the Ephesians, 2; Epistle to the Magnesians, 12], seems to allude to Phm 20. Compare Epistle to Polycarp [1 and 6]. Its brevity is the cause of its not being often quoted by the Fathers. Paley [Horæ Paulinæ], has shown striking proofs of its authenticity in the undesigned coincidences between it and the Epistle to the Colossians. Place and Time of Writing.-This Epistle is closely linked with the Epistle to the Colossians. Both were carried by the same bearer, Onesimus (with whom, however, Tychicus is joined in the Epistle to the Colossians), Col 4:9. The persons sending salutations are the same, except one, Jesus called Justus (Col 4:11). In both alike Archippus is addressed (Phm 2; Col 4:17). Paul and Timothy stand in the headings of both. And in both Paul appears as a prisoner (Phm 9; Col 4:18). Hence it follows, it was written at the same time and place as the Epistle to the Colossians (which was about the same time as the Epistle to the Ephesians), namely, at Rome, during Paul's first imprisonment, A.D. 61 or 62. Object.-Onesimus, of Colosse ("one of you," Col 4:9), slave of Philemon, had fled from his master to Rome, after having probably defrauded him (Phm 18). He there was converted to Christianity by Paul, and being induced by him to return to his master, he was furnished with this Epistle, recommending him to Philemon's favorable reception, as being now no longer a mere servant, but also a brother in Christ. Paul ends by requesting Philemon to prepare him a lodging, as he trusted soon to be set free and visit Colosse. This Epistle is addressed also to Apphia, supposed from its domestic subject to have been Philemon's wife, and Archippus (a minister of the Colossian Church, Col 4:17), for the same reason, supposed to be a near relative. Onesimus in the Apostolical Canons [73], is said to have been emancipated by his master. The Apostolical Constitutions [7.46] state that he was consecrated by Paul, bishop of Berea, in Macedonia, and that he was martyred at Rome. Ignatius [Epistle to the Ephesians, 1], speaks of him as bishop of the Ephesians. Style.-It has been happily termed, from its graceful and delicate urbanity, "the polite Epistle." Yet there is nothing of insincere compliment, miscalled politeness by the world. It is manly and straightforward, without misrepresentation or suppression of facts; at the same time it is most captivatingly persuasive. Alford quotes Luther's eloquent description, "This Epistle showeth a right, noble, lovely example of Christian love. Here we see how St. Paul layeth himself out for the poor Onesimus, and with all his means pleadeth his cause with his master, and so setteth himself as if he were Onesimus, and had himself done wrong to Philemon. Yet all this doeth he, not with force, as if he had right thereto, but he stripped himself of his right, and thus enforceth Philemon to forego his right also. Even as Christ did for us with the Sovereign God God Almighty the Father, thus also doth St. Paul for Onesimus with Philemon: for Christ also stripped Himself of His right, and by love and humility enforced [?] the Father to lay aside His wrath and power, and to take us to His grace for the sake of Christ, who lovingly pleadeth our cause, and with all His heart layeth Himself out for us; for we are all His Onesimi, to my thinking." Phm 1-25. Address. Thanksgiving for Philemon's Love and Faith. Intercession for Onesimus. Concluding Request and Salutations. This Epistle affords a specimen of the highest wisdom as to the manner in which Christians ought to manage social affairs on more exalted principles. 1. prisoner of Jesus Christ-one whom Christ's cause has made a prisoner (compare "in the bonds of the Gospel," (Phm 13). He does not call himself, as in other Epistles, "Paul an apostle," as he is writing familiarly, not authoritatively. our . fellow labourer-in building up the Church at Colosse, while we were at Ephesus. See my [2542]Introduction to Colossians. Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 1:1-7 Faith in Christ, and love to him, should unite saints more closely than any outward relation can unite the people of the world. Paul in his private prayers was particular in remembering his friends. We must remember Christian friends much and often, as their cases may need, bearing them in our thoughts, and upon our hearts, before our the Sovereign God God Almighty. Different sentiments and ways in what is not essential, must not make difference of affection, as to the truth. He inquired concerning his friends, as to the truth, growth, and fruitfulness of their graces, their faith in Christ, and love to him, and to all the saints. The good which Philemon did, was matter of joy and comfort to him and others, who therefore desired that he would continue and abound in good fruits, more and more, to the Sovereign God God Almighty's honour. Matthew Henry's Whole Bible Commentary An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of the Epistle of St. Paul to Philemon This epistle to Philemon is placed the last of those with the name of Paul to them, perhaps because the shortest, and of an argument peculiar and different from all the others; yet such as the Spirit of the Sovereign God God Almighty, who indited it, saw would, in its kind, be very instructive and useful in the churches. The occasion of it was this:-Philemon, one of note and probably a minister in the church of Colosse, a city of Phrygia, had a servant named Onesimus, who, having purloined his goods, ran away from him, and in his rambles came to Rome, where Paul was then a prisoner for the gospel, and, providentially coming under his preaching there, was, by the blessing of the Sovereign God God Almighty, converted by him, after which he ministered awhile to the apostle in bonds, and might have been further useful to him, but, understanding him to be another man's servant, Paul would not, without his consent, detain him, but sends him back with this letter-commendatory, wherein he earnestly sues for his pardon and kind reception. Before we enter on the exposition, such general things as follow may be taken notice of from the epistle and what relates to it; namely, I. The goodness and mercy of the Sovereign God God Almighty to a poor wandering sinner, bringing him by his gracious providence under the means, and making them effectual to his conversion. Thus came he to be sought of him that asked not for him, and to be found of him that sought him not, Isa. 65:1. II. The great and endeared affection between a true convert and him whom the Sovereign God God Almighty used to be the instrument of his conversion. Paul regards this poor fugitive now as his son in the faith, and terms him his own bowels; and Onesimus readily serves Paul in prison, and would gladly have continued to do so, would duty have permitted; but, being another's servant, he must return and submit himself to his master, and be at his disposal. III. The tender and good spirit of this blessed apostle Paul. With what earnestness does he concern himself for the poor slave! Being now, through his preaching, reconciled to the Sovereign God God Almighty, he labours for reconciliation between him and his master. How pathetic a letter does he here write in his behalf! Scarcely any argument is forgotten that could possible be used in the case; and all are pressed with such force that, had it been the greatest favour to himself that he was asking, he could not have used more. IV. The remarkable providence of the Sovereign God God Almighty in preserving such a short writing as this, that might be thought of little concern to the church, being not only a letter to a particular person (as those to Timothy, and Titus, and Gaius, and the elect lady, likewise were), but of a private personal matter, namely, the receiving of a poor fugitive servant into the favour and family of his injured master. What in this is there that concerns the common salvation? And yet over this has there been a special divine care, it being given (as the other scriptures were) by inspiration of the Sovereign God God Almighty, and in some sort, as they are, profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The Sovereign God God Almighty would have extant a proof and instance of his rich and free grace for the encouragement and comfort of the meanest and vilest of sinners, looking to him for mercy and forgiveness; and for instruction to ministers and others not to despise any, much less to judge them as to their final state, as if they were utter cast-aways, but rather to attempt their conversion, hoping they may be saved; likewise how to behave towards them. Joy must be on earth, as well as there is in heaven, over one sinner who repenteth. Such must now be loved, and helped, and confirmed in good, and furthered in it; and, in their outward concerns, their comfort and welfare must be consulted and promoted as much as possible. And, on their part, they must be humble and grateful, acknowledging the Sovereign God God Almighty and his instruments in what good they have received, ready to all suitable returns, making what reparation they can in case of injuries, and living a life of thankfulness and obedience. To such purposes may this epistle have been written and preserved. And perhaps, V. There may be something further in all this; at least, by way of allusion, it is applicable to the mediation and intercession of Christ for poor sinners. We, like Onesimus, were revolters from the Sovereign God God Almighty's service, and had injured him in his rights. Jesus Christ finds us, and by his grace works a change in us, and then intercedes for us with the Father, that we may be received into his favour and family again, and past offences may be forgiven; and we are sure that the Father heareth him always. There is no reason to doubt but Paul prevailed with Philemon to forgive and receive Onesimus: and more reason have we to be confident that the intercession of Christ with the Father is prevalent for the acceptance of all whose case he takes in hand and recommends to him. From these general observations we come to the epistle itself. In this epistle we have, I. The preface (v. 1-7). II. The substance and body of it (v. 8-21). And then the conclusion (v. 22 to the end.) Verses 1-7 I. In the first two verses of the preface we have the persons from and to whom it is written, with some annexed note or title, implying somewhat of argument to the purpose of the letter. 1. The persons writing: Paul, the principal, who calls himself a prisoner of Jesus Christ, that is, for Jesus Christ. To be a prisoner simply is no comfort nor honour; but such as Paul was, for the faith and preaching of the gospel, this was true glory, and proper to move Philemon upon the request made to him by such a one. A petition from one suffering for Christ and his gospel would surely be tenderly regarded by a believer and minister of Christ, especially when strengthened too with the concurrence of Timothy, one eminent in the church, sometimes called by Paul his son in the faith, but now, it is likely, grown more in years, he styles him his brother. What could be denied to two such petitioners? Paul is not slight in serving a poor convert; he gets all the additional help he can in it. 2. The persons written to are Philemon and Apphia, and with them Archippus, and the church in Philemon's house. Philemon, the master of Onesimus, was the principal, to whom the letter is inscribed, the head of the family, in whom were the authority and power of taking in or shutting out, and whose property Onesimus was: with him therefore chiefly lay the business. To Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellow-labourer; a good man he was, and probably a minister, and on both accounts dearly beloved by Paul. A lover of good men is one property of a good minister (Tit. 1:8), and especially must such love those who labor with them in the work of the gospel, and who are faithful therein. The general calling as Christians knits those together who are Christian; but, when conjunction in the special calling as ministers is added, this will be further endearing. Paul, in the highest degree of ministry, not only calls Timothy, an evangelist, his brother, but Philemon, an ordinary pastor, his dearly beloved fellow-labourer-an example of humility and condescension, and of all affectionate regards, even in those that are highest in the church, towards others that are labourers in the same special heavenly calling. With Philemon Apphia is joined, probably his yoke-fellow; and, having a concern in the domestic affairs, the apostle directs to her likewise. She was a party offended and injured by Onesimus, and therefore proper to be taken notice of in a letter for reconciliation and forgiveness. Justice and prudence would direct Paul to this express notice of her, who might be helpful in furthering the good ends of his writing. She is set before Archippus, as more concerned and having more interest. A kind conjunction there is in domestic matters between husband and wife, whose interests are one, and whose affections and actings must correspond. These are the principal parties written to. The less principal are, Archippus, and the church in Philemon's house. Archippus was a minister in the church of Colosse, Philemon's friend, and probably co-pastor with him; Paul might think him one whom Philemon would advise with, and who might be capable of furthering the good work of peace-making and forgiveness, and therefore might judge fit to put him in the inscription of the letter, with the adjunct of fellow-soldier. He had called Philemon his fellow-labourer. Ministers must look on themselves as labourers and soldiers, who must therefore take pains, and endure hardship; they must stand on their guard, and make good their post; must look on one another as fellow-labourers, and fellow-soldiers, who must stand together, and strengthen one another's hands and hearts in any work of their holy function and calling: they need see to it that they be provided with spiritual weapons, and skill to use them; as labourers they must minister the word, and sacraments, and discipline, and watch over souls, as those that must give an account of them; and, as soldiers, they must fight the Lord's battles, and not entangle themselves in the things of this life, but attend to the pleasing of him who hath chosen them to be soldiers, 2 Tim. 2:4. To those it is added, And to the church in thy house, his whole family, in which the worship of the Sovereign God God Almighty was kept up, so that he had, as it were, a church in his house. Observe, (1.) Families which generally may be most pious and orderly may yet have one or other in them impious and wicked. This was the aggravation of Onesimus's sin, that it was where he might and should have learned better; it is likely that he was secret in him misconduct, till his flight discovered him. Hearts are unknown but to the Sovereign God God Almighty, till overt acts discover them. (2.) This one evil servant did not hinder Philemon's house from being called and counted a church, for the religious worship and order that were kept up in it; and such should all families be-nurseries of religion, societies where the Sovereign God God Almighty is called on, his word is read, his sabbaths are observed, and the members are instructed in the knowledge of him and of their duty to him, neglect of which is followed with ignorance and all corruption. Wicked families are nurseries for hell, as good ones are for heaven. (3.) Masters and others of the family may not think it enough to be good, singly and severally in their personal capacities, but they must be socially so; as here Philemon's house was a church; and Paul, for some concern that all might have in this matter of Onesimus, directs to them all, that their affection as well as Philemon's might return to him, and that in their way and place they might further, and not hinder, the reconciliation wished and sought. Desirable it is that all in a family be well affected towards one another, for furthering their particular welfare and for the common good and benefit of all. On such accounts might it be that Paul inscribed his letter here so generally, that all might be the more ready to own and receive this poor convert, and to behave affectionately towards him. Next to this inscription is, II. The apostle's salutation of those named by him (v. 3): Grace to you and peace from the Sovereign God God Almighty our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the token in every epistle; so the apostle writes. He is a hearty well-wisher to all his friends, and wishes for them the best things; not gold, nor silver, nor any earthly good, in the first or chief place, but grace and peace from the Sovereign God God Almighty in Christ; he cannot give them himself, but he prays for them from him who can bestow them. Grace, the free favour and good-will of the Sovereign God God Almighty, the spring and fountain of all blessings; and peace, all good, as the fruit and effect of that grace. To you, that is, be bestowed on you, and continued to you, with the comfortable feeling and sense of it in yourselves. From the Sovereign God God Almighty our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit also is understood, though not named; for all acts towards the creatures of the whole Trinity: from the Father, who is our Father in Christ, the first in order of acting as of subsisting; and from Christ, his favour and good-will as the Sovereign God God Almighty, and the fruits of it through him as Mediator, the Sovereign God God Almighty-man. It is in the beloved that we are accepted, and through him we have peace and all good things, who is, with the Father and Spirit, to be looked to and blessed and praised for all, and to be owned, not only as Jesus and Christ, but as Lord also. In 2 Co. 13:14 the apostle's benediction is full: the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of the Sovereign God God Almighty, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all, Amen. Observe, Spiritual blessings are first and especially to be sought for ourselves and others. The favour of the Sovereign God God Almighty and peace with him, as in itself it is the best and most desirable good, so is it the cause of all other, and what puts sweetness into every mercy and can make happy even in the want of all earthly things. Though there be no herd in the stall, and the labor of the olive fail, yet may such rejoice in the Lord, and joy in the The Sovereign God God Almighty of their salvation, Hab. 3:17, 18. There are many that say, Who will show us any good? But, if the Sovereign God God Almighty lift up the light of his countenance, this will put more joy and gladness into the heart than all worldly increase, Ps. 4:6, 7. And Num. 6:26, the Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. In this is summarily all good, and from this one fountain, the Sovereign God God Almighty the Father, Son, and Spirit, all comes. After this salutation of the apostle to Philemon, and his friends and family, for better making way still for his suit to him, III. He expresses the singular and affection he had for him, by thanksgiving and prayer to the Sovereign God God Almighty in his behalf, and the great joy for the many good things he knew and heard to be in him, v. 4-7. The apostle's thanksgiving and prayer for Philemon are here set forth by the object, circumstance, and matter of them, with the way whereby much of the knowledge of Philemon's goodness came to him. 1. Here is the object of Paul's praises and prayers for Philemon: I thank my the Sovereign God God Almighty, making mention of thee in my prayers, v. 4. Observe, (1.) the Sovereign God God Almighty is the author of all the good that is in any, or that is done by them. From me is thy fruit found, Hos. 14:8. To him therefore is all the praise due. 1 Chr. 29:13, 14, But [or for] who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come of thee, both wherewith to offer, and the will and heart to do it. On this account (says he) we thank thee our the Sovereign God God Almighty, and praise thy glorious name. (2.) It is the privilege of good men that their praises and prayers they come to the Sovereign God God Almighty as their the Sovereign God God Almighty: Our the Sovereign God God Almighty, we thank thee, said David; and I thank my the Sovereign God God Almighty, said Paul. (3.) Our prayers and praises should be offered up to the Sovereign God God Almighty, not for ourselves only, but for others also. Private addresses should not be altogether with a private spirit, minding our own things only, but others must be remembered by us. We must be affected with joy and thankfulness for any good in them, or done by them, or bestowed on them, as far as is known to us, and seek for them what they need. In this lies no little part of the communion of saints. Paul, in his private thanksgivings and prayers, was often particular in remembering his friends: I thank my the Sovereign God God Almighty, making mention of thee in my prayers; sometimes it may be by name, or at least having them particularly in his thoughts; and the Sovereign God God Almighty knows who is meant, though not named. This is a means of exercising love, and obtaining good for others. Strive with me, by your prayers to the Sovereign God God Almighty for me, said the apostle: and what he desired for himself he surely practised on behalf of others; so should all. Pray one for another, says James, 5:16. 2. Here is the circumstance: Always making mention of thee. Always-usually, not once or twice only, but frequently. So must we remember Christian friends much and often, as their case may need, bearing them in our thoughts and upon our hearts before our the Sovereign God God Almighty. 3. Here is the matter both of his praises and prayers, in reference to Philemon. (1.) Of his praises. [1.] He thanks the Sovereign God God Almighty for the love which he heard Philemon had towards the Lord Jesus. He is to be loved as the Sovereign God God Almighty superlatively, as his divine perfections require; and as related to us, the Lord, and our Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Saviour, who loved us, and gave himself for us. Paul thanks the Sovereign God God Almighty for what he heard of this, the signal marks and expressions of it in Philemon. [2.] For his faith in Christ also. Love to Christ, and faith in him, are prime Christian graces, for which there is great ground of praise to the Sovereign God God Almighty, where he has blessed any with them, as Rom. 1:8, I thank my the Sovereign God God Almighty because your faith is published throughout the world; and, in reference to the Colossians (ch. 1:3, 4), We give thanks to the Sovereign God God Almighty since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus. This is a saving grace, and the very principle of Christian life and of all good works. [3.] He praises the Sovereign God God Almighty likewise for Philemon's love to all the saints. These two must go together; for he who loveth him that begat must and will love those also that are begotten of him. The apostle joins them in that (Col. 1:3, 4), We give thanks to the Sovereign God God Almighty since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have to all the saints. These bear the image of Christ, which will be loved by every Christian. Different sentiments and ways in what is not essential will not make a difference of affection as to the truth, though difference in the degrees of love will be according as more or less of that image is discerned. Mere external differences are nothing here. Paul calls a poor converted slave his bowels. We must love, as the Sovereign God God Almighty does, all saints. Paul thanked the Sovereign God God Almighty for the good that was not only in the churches, but in the particular persons he wrote to, and though this too was known to him merely by report: Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all saints. This was what he enquired after concerning his friends, the truth, and growth, and fruitfulness of their graces, their faith in Christ, and love to him and to all the saints. Love to saints, if it be sincere, will be catholic and universal love towards all saints; but faith and love, though in the heart they are hidden things, are known by the effects of them. Therefore, (2.) the apostle joins prayer with his praises, that the fruits of Philemon's faith and love might be more and more conspicuous, so as that the communication of them might constrain others to the acknowledgment of all the good things that were in him and in his house towards Christ Jesus; that their light might so shine before men that they, seeing their good works, might be stirred up to imitate them, and to glorify their Father who is in heaven. Good works must be done, not of vain-glory to be seen, yet such as may be seen to the Sovereign God God Almighty's glory and the good of men. 4. He adds a reason, both of his prayer and his praises (v. 7): For "we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. The good thou hast done and still doest is abundant matter of joy and comfort to me and others, who therefore desire you may continue and abound in such good fruits more and more, to the Sovereign God God Almighty's honour and the credit of religion. The administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto the Sovereign God God Almighty," 2 Co. 9:12. Bp58 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and withersoever thou turnest thyself; --I Kings 2:2, 3 Following Jesus means you do what He wants means you do things to feed your spirit means you do stuff to shun tw means you do whatever Jesus says. He doesn’t tell you to do things you'll regret. Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the Lord charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. --I Chronicles 22:13 Put value in the way Jesus feels when He looks what you are doing. I just saw football player Pike. I remembered Papa’s taking me snipe hunting. He sent me a hundred yards into the ballast pit at night. I ran to him. Psnipes were to run into the bucket he was holding. I thought he was real. He was laughing so hard. He said, after I made the run, it was a joke. That papa died October 4, 07 he died. Same day as my other Granny died. Separate causes. Separate towns. My body was already depressed. It just got more depressed. My living Papa needs your prayers. His legs have agent orange. Praise the Lord for another day to make eternal investments. Will anything pay off better? Seek first Jesus Christ then all things will be added unto you. be your best. “To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.” I didn't ask anybody out till I graduated high school. Now 177 women have rejected me. It was an answered prayer. I was turned off. That's what I wanted so badly when I went girl crazy. I even bought a book on holistic healing, hoping to find a cure. Failing. Now that 177 rejections have prevailed the last thing I want is to date. All because of an answered prayer. Very, very fervent, persistent I prayed it off. 176 rejections later I could care less! It blesses my ministry and enables my focusing on Jesus better! Yesterday, my back hurt all day. This morning, I read with a pillow under my lower back an hour earlier and my back feels completely different! Praise the Lord! Dad always bemoaned a pinched nerve my whole life in his back. Now my back hurts all of the time. Hurting reminds me of Cobaine’s stomach pains. Doctors couldn't find the cause for millions of dollars! Like dizziness stomach pain has thousands of causes. The most pain I've felt was a crystallized catheter and fluid build up in my brain. So I feel great empathy for people in pain. After I told my friend’s mom how much better he has it than me, I told the answering machine to get to church because there isn’t much time left. Please pray it planted effectual seeds. Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favor my righteous cause; and let them say continually, "Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant." (Psalm 35:27) I got my cell back. Mom dealt with the operator a long time and frowned when she handed the phone back to m3. I went to bed after putting it on charge. Then got up to call Ladonna to tell Bob to call me. I want to paint parking lot bumpers and don't have his number. She stopped answering my mail. I pray I planted seeds that made her rethink who she worships. Praise Jesus the Savior with your time and deeds. Be an example of Jesus Christ. Be patient, enduring, tolerant, unwearied, uncomplaining, long-suffering, serene, tranquil, calm, peaceful, quiet, still. Avoid pollution. Keep away from contamination. Stay away from toxic waste. Love the Lord with your whole heart. Pursue your dreams. Refrain from violence. Have 1 lover this life unless your spouse dies. Jesus is very, very best friend you'll ever have. (Deuteronomy 29:9) Having bad credit makes you appreciate good credit. Having a contaminated body makes you appreciate a clean body. Dad only laughed with drugs in him. I saw people there to tell me about his death. They met me at church after a convention a decade ago. They told me about Dad. But I saw it coming out of their mouth beforehand. Nonetheless if Lord Jesus is calling you to do something that you do not want to do, you better move or greater loss will make you do it. Proud and arrogant people here are uncomfortable. That means you are more comfortable season B if season A you are uncomfortable. Saving yourself for marriage is harder the more enticed you are. Narcotics drop your ego boundary. Do not do that. The progesterone hormone’s effect is to suppress ovulation, but after 2 years, there is a greater chance of break-through ovulation and fertilization. The hormone may prevent implantation of the embryo. Depo-Provera This Progesterone (hormone) derivative is injected every 3 months to prevent a woman from ovulating, but it also alters the uterine lining. Break-through ovulation and fertilization may occur, though less frequently than with Norplant. The hormone may prevent implantation of the embryo. Morning after pill Large doses of existing birth control pills (or another drug levonorgestrel, known as Plan B) are given up to 72 hours after intercourse to attempt to prevent the implantation of the embryo. A second dose is given 12 hours after the first one. The action of these large doses of hormones birth control pills work to prevent ovulation and/or fertilization. RU-486 When a woman is given RU-486 (also called Mifepristone), it kills her baby by interfering with progesterone, the hormone which keeps the baby implanted in the wall of the mother’s uterus. Two days later, the woman returns to the clinic to receive a prostaglandin drug which induces labor and expels the dead embryo (RU-486 is used until 7 weeks after the first day of her last menstrual period). If the baby hasn’t been expelled by the time the woman makes her third visit to the doctor, she will require a surgical abortion procedure (5-8% likelihood). Raymond, Klein & Dumble, the pro-abortion authors of RU486 Misconceptions, Myths and Morals, (IWT Pub, 1991) stress that RU-486 is not safe for women and list the following contraindications (reasons a person should not take RU-486): under age 18 or over 35; menstrual irregularities; history of fibroids, abnormal menstrual bleeding or endometriosis cervical incompetence, previous abortion, or abnormal pregnancies; pelvic inflammatory disease; recent use of IUD or the pill 3 months. Methotrexate & Misoprostol Two drugs that were developed for cancer (methotrexate) and ulcer (misoprostol) treatment are now being used in combination to kill babies. Methotrexate is used to poison the baby and then Misoprostol empties the uterus of the baby. Keep in mind that Methotrexate is a chemotherapy drug with the potential for serious toxicity, which can result in the death of the mother as well as the baby. The Bible tells us that in the last days, perilous times shall come. I say not only shall they come, but they are already here and therefore we are already living in the Last Days. After having reviewed Timothy’s list of the warning signs that will be prevalent in the world in the last days, I think that you would also have to agree. Each of the warning signs that we reviewed are connected and one leads to the other and is a byproduct of the previous. We are living in a time where the lines between good and evil has become so blurred that you can’t tell one from the other. No longer are the days where the good guys always wore white hats and the bad guys black hats, today they can wear either one or worse yet they wear a grey hat. We are living in a time where what used to be good is now called evil and what used to be considered evil is now called good and they are “proud” of it! We are living in a time where technology enables anyone to view and download any type of evil imaginable of course we don’t call it evil anymore we call it entertainment. It’s no wonder that the statistics for crime, pornography, child abuse, drug abuse, rape, teenage pregnancy, teen-suicide, domestic violence and divorce are all at their highest levels ever. One of the most devious characteristics about the “perilous times of these Last Days” is the spiritual and religious deception that will pervade the world. Doctrinal deception, lying spirits, great wonders, and miracle movements in the last days will be the calling card of the spirit of Satan’s Antichrist and the False Prophet. Many churches today not only deny the doctrinal truths of the Bible, but they also incorporate some of the most blasphemous ideals in the world into the very makeup of the church. Many churches today are seeker-friendly and teach a “feel good” gospel that never offends, leaving out basic truths like sin, and hell. We have to be careful of what we believe even when it comes from someone we may trust as a good teacher. We see in Acts 17:10-11 that Paul was declaring Jesus Christ to those in Berea and those in Berea were receiving what Paul had to say. However, they did not take what Paul taught as absolute truth, but examined what Paul taught by the Scriptures. Paul said, "To examine all things and hold fast to that which is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21 NASB) We are instructed through the inspiration of the Word to examine what we hear and to be careful of what we are being taught. Now that we have determined that we are truly living in the Last Days, we need find out what we can expect and what we need to do to survive. Bp8 Some people do not have insurance because they do not want it. They think healthy eating means healthy living. Trouble comes no matter how much you protect yourself or how many steps you take to prevent it. When the Lord needs to do something with you, the devil trembles and starts launching tests on you the devil needs to stop the plan of the Lord. Getting in the way is what it takes. Stand the test. Give Jesus time. You can wait for a delicious meal at restaurant. You can wait for something you really want. Therefore you can wait on the Sovereign God? It’s worth the wait when you wait on Jesus Christ. I want to cut the grass as Mom takes our visitors to a good fishing spot, to look at “where we can go later.” No room for me. Just Steve and Sara, Jacob and Chanse. And Mom. Opportunity. When Jimmy slugged me and I said come on, come on, come on, then he ran wo0 my chasing him, opportunity was lost. I called Mom to see if I can cut the grass. Saturday, today, not Sunday. But she isn’t returning my call. It’s not the timing I like. I have to be patient to avoid a lot of trouble. So if I wait against my will, I’ll wait better on the Lord. Consequently, waiting better on the Lord means more rewards for me. I hate this waiting on the call. I'm not happy right now. So I very, very speedily cut the grass. I was able to do so before they arrived! Praise the Lord! Then we went to a friend’s at old St. Pete with cobblestone roads. And then walked to the biggest fireworks display I've ever seen in my life! I overheard each firework cost 25 dollars. If that's the case, it was a 30 thousand dollar production! We were at a high wall on the ocean and a drunken man jumped off the side to swim out very, very far along the side. Cops on jet skis zoomed in to arrest him. He was right beside us! Cops came to where they were sitting and made them pour all their beer out! They were mad! 1 woman with 2 men. The other man went to the police station to get him. The cute blond woman apologized to us. I said that's ok, we were getting bored. They grew increasingly angry at being dragged into [or paying for] the wars of the Crown. The King had largely held a hands-off approach with the colonies, which largely learned the self-governance necessary to carve a new nation out of wilderness. As the colonies became more prosperous, though, the King saw potential. He saw the potential to tax them as Englishmen but without giving them the full rights and representation of those in the home country. He tried to impose English hands-on governance upon a people who had learned to exist without such meddling. And this meddling was NOT appreciated.
We focus, and rightly so, a lot of energy and time on the Declaration of Independence and July 4, 1776. It is the watershed moment in our rise from loosely-joined colonies into a nation. But there’s more to the story.
For those who view today’s America as the culmination of the vision of the founders, it is right to view Independence Day as a day of remembrance of things past. For those of us who consider our current government (being the establishment since the New Deal and only accelerated by GWB and BHO) to be antithetical to the ideals that founded this nation and still rest latent within its people, it’s instructive to look at this from a far wider perspective.
July 4, 1776, and the Declaration of Independence, was one of the most important steps in the American Revolution. But it was only a step, and that step was squarely in the middle of the game, not the beginning. In fact, it occurred over a year after armed hostilities erupted at Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill took place the prior month. In terms of our nation, the Declaration of Independence is important because it marks the point at which our hostilities against the British became a struggle for independence, rather than a struggle for reparation. But in terms of the history of the struggle, the stage was truly set over the course of the prior decade.
There is not enough space to delve deeply into the history here. For reference, I heartily recommend A Leap In The Dark by John Ferling , and The Ideological Origins of The American Revolution by Bernard Bailyn. To summarize, one of the watershed moments of the lead-up was the Stamp Act of 1765. This was a tax on most paper products in use at the time, and it was a very visible and direct tax. It hit many colonists close to home, and was a new tax to these shores. The tax ignited protests a decade in advance of actual hostilities. For many, these protests were some of their first concrete actions in opposition to policies of their government.
But it was just a tax. Americans at the time considered it a piece of bad policy foisted upon them by the King, and when the King rescinded the tax, things simmered down. There had not yet developed an adversarial relationship between the colonists and the Crown. Over the next decade, though, a King who wanted to claim control over the colonies engaged in consistent escalation of his taxation and attempts to rein in what he considered improper actions of “his subjects”.
Throughout this decade, independence was never a foregone conclusion. Many in the colonies were not opposed to British rule, they simply wanted a hand in direction of that rule. Most people in the colonies viewed themselves as Englishmen first, citizens of their colony second, and Americans third. There was a very strong emotional connection to the Crown and to the people — many of them family — of the home country. The path to Independence was a jerking motion as the Crown bullied the populace, the populace resented the Crown, and all through that time voices towards independence helped frame the debate.
Samuel Adams was one of those key voices early on. In 1765, he was already advocating against Britain and — although difficult to speak out publicly for Independence — it is clear that he saw an American rift with Britain coming in the future. During the ensuing decade, Samuel Adams was a key instigator and key voice in framing the debate for Independence. He was instrumental during the “quiet period” of 1770-73, when the British somewhat reduced their acts of encroachment on the colonies. During this time, as anti-British sentiment waned, Samuel Adams was the key voice keeping the narrative of colonies vs. Crown in the minds of the people. It was never ONLY what the Crown did that led to independence; it was the voices of the rabble-rousers who saw the end game of subjugation to the crown who brought it to bear.
How did they bring it to bear? They changed the perception of the people. Prior to the Stamp Act, most colonists thought of themselves as Englishmen and saw the Crown as their legitimate government. Over that decade leading to July 4, 1776, that perception changed. The colonists increasingly saw the Crown as an arbitrary government willing to completely abrogate their rights in order to achieve its own ends. It saw the Crown treating the colonists in ways they believed it would never treat a true Englishman. They, as a people, ceased to give the government their consent.
This was a decade-long (and possibly extending farther back) effort. Few at the days of the first Stamp Act protests were likely envisioning a war of Independence brewing. Few are today.
In 2005, the Supreme Court found in Kelo that Americans could have their homes seized, at will, for nearly anything a local government claimed a “public use”, including handing it to developers who will build private-use structures. This hits every American in their homes. It makes every American understand that the whim of the government can take their highest-value, most cherished possession and give it to someone they think will make better use of it.
Since 2005, the United States Government has engaged in domestic wiretapping programs without judicial oversight, proving that the United States Government can listen in on your phone calls at the discretion of any civil-service bureaucrat who deems it necessary. It has created a terrorist watch-list of over 1,000,000 names, without any clear discussion of who is on that list, why, or how to have your name removed. If you’re on that list, you can expect to be hassled endlessly if you choose to engage in mundane civil activities such as air travel. During that time, it was learned that the United States Government has been engaged in “enhanced interrogation techniques” that — whether they’re technically defined torture or not — curl your hair to think about. Waterboarding is one that likely doesn’t sound as bad as it feels, but I defy anyone to support a government who engages in crucifixion.
In late 2008, in the midst of a financial crisis unlike any we’ve seen since the Depression, the United States Government decided that it could take $700B and simply hand it out to banks — more accurately, force banks to take it — and don’t have any real duty to the public regarding oversight of those funds. In the same time, the Federal Reserve and United States Treasury have either used or promised guarantees to over $14T in assets — larger than the GDP of the nation.
Since the election of Barack Obama, the United States Government passed a $787B stimulus bill not supported by a majority of Americans. The United States Government has de facto nationalized and illegally bankrupted two domestic automakers, rewriting the rules of bankruptcy in order to give out sweetheart deals to unions and the government. Most recently, the House Of Representatives has passed an enormous 1200-page Cap and Trade proposal (hidden tax) that included a 300-page amendment added only hours before the final vote. To believe that our “representatives” actually read this bill or its amendment is laughable. It is likely that over the next several months, the United States Government will pass a bill speeding us down the road to the nationalization of the healthcare industry, and to pay for it, enact a VAT to give them yet another revenue stream to extract the fruits of our labor.
Throughout all this time, the United States Government pays lip service to the Constitution, but routinely acts contrary to both its letter and its spirit at every turn. It is therefore defying even its own supreme blueprint.
If the United States Government is willing to act against the will of Americans, and if our “representatives” are willing to pass bills that they cannot and have not read — bills often giving law-making ability to unelected bureaucracies like the EPA, how can we really believe that we are a representative democracy? If the United States Government engages in barbaric acts such as crucifixion, how can we support it? If we have truly reached, as I believe, a point where our government views us not as citizens but as subjects, we must denounce the United States Government as illegitimate.
On this anniversary of the date of American Independence, it is right to celebrate. It is right to remember the valiant and principled action of the Founding Fathers to take on the world’s great superpower and assert their rights — many lost their lives in the effort. We have a nation worth celebrating.
But in remembrance of those who we are celebrating, it is important to understand their significance in a historic context (again, see the books recommended above). It is important to remember that the principles they are fighting for are again in peril. And it important to realize that in order for those principles to be recovered, we must tirelessly call the United States Government for what it is — illegitimate.
The time between the Stamp Act and the Treaty of Paris was 18 years. Between the Stamp Act and the Declaration of Independence, it was only the efforts of those who were willing to call the actions of their government deplorable that ensured that the yoke of that government would be lifted. It is now time for those of us who love our country and despise the United States Government to stand up and do the same. The American people are an industrious people, and often have little time to devote to paying attention to the actions of our government. They have a media more focused on the daily lives of TV celebrities than the outcome of legislation that will affect everyone’s daily life. They have been educated quite literally by the state to see the United States Government as a trusted friend and helpful assistant. This must change, and it is the work of those of us who believe in liberty to keep the fires stoked and educate them to the truth. This is not going to be a small job, and won’t happen quickly. But if we do not continually work towards this goal, we are resigning ourselves to a future led by a government by the power brokers, of the power brokers, and for the power brokers.
Today is a remembrance of America’s Independence Day. It is also a day to remember that committed citizens, in the cause of freedom, can break the chains of the greatest superpower seen on earth and claim their rightful liberty. It is a day to remember and celebrate those who did it before, but it’s also a day to steel yourself — there’s work to be done again. "'Give me Liberty, or give me Death'!" is a famous quotation attributed to Patrick Henry from a speech he made to the Virginia Convention. It was given March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia, and is credited with having swung the balance in convincing the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution delivering the Virginia troops to the Revolutionary War. Among the delegates to the convention were future US Presidents Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Reportedly, those in attendance, upon hearing the speech, shouted, "To arms! To arms!"[1]
The text of this speech first appeared in print in Life and Character of Patrick Henry by William Wirt which was first published in 1816, seventeen years after Patrick Henry's death. In 1815, Wirt wrote to a friend, "from 1763 to 1789... not one of his speeches lives in print, writing or memory. All that is told me is, that on such and such an occasion, he made a distinguished speech"[2] Wirt corresponded with men who had heard the speech and others who were acquainted with people who were there at the time. Wirt wrote to Judge St. George Tucker, who had been present for the speech, that "I have taken almost entirely Mr. Henry's speech in the Convention of '75 from you, as well as your description of its effect on you verbatim."[3]
Tucker's account was based upon recollections and not notes. Tucker attempted a reconstruction of only the first two paragraphs of the speech. Tucker wrote, "In vain should I attempt to give any idea of his speech".[4] While this implies a degree of uncertainty over the content of the speech, the amount of research done by Wirt in the process of creating his text strongly argues that he was able to accurately reconstruct the key points, especially the famous quote itself. It is generally agreed that it ended with, "It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace — but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
Ear-witnesses to Henry's hypnotic orations remarked that while they always seemed to be convincing in the moment, they had a difficult time remembering exactly what he had said immediately afterwards: according to Thomas Jefferson, "Although it was difficult, when [Henry] had spoken, to tell what he had said, yet, while speaking, it always seemed directly to the point. When he had spoken in opposition to my opinion, had produced a great effect, and I myself had been highly delighted and moved, I have asked myself, when he ceased, 'What the devil has he said?' and could never answer the inquiry."[5]
A more contemporary account is found in a letter of James Parker of Norfolk, written to his friend Charles Steuart on April 6, 1775: "You never heard anything more famously insolent than P Henrys speech. He called the King a Tyrant, a fool, a puppet & tool to the Ministry, Said there was now no Englishmen, no Scots no Britons, but a Set of Wretches Sunk in luxury..." [6]
The text of the speech as presented by Wirt contains many biblical allusions and radical pronouncements, and ends by asserting that war has already begun, the only question being whether or not to fight. In Henry's delivery of the speech, Wirt compared Henry with the Roman statesman Cato. Cato was a famous orator and a leading proponent of the Stoicism philosophy in which it is believed that death was a guarantee of personal freedom. Cato was a proponent of Republicanism in opposition to the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. Cato chose suicide over living in a tyranny. Some scholars believe that this line was inspired by Cato.[7] The play Cato, a Tragedy contains the line, "It is not now time to talk of aught/But chains or conquest, liberty or death" (Act II, Scene 4). This play was popular in the colonies and was well-known by the Founding Fathers, who used quotes from the play. George Washington had this play performed for the Continental Army at Valley Forge.[8] The phrase "Liberty or Death" Take a step forward and fight for those who have gone on before us. Pilgrims, or Pilgrim Fathers, is a name commonly applied to the early settlers of the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. Their leadership came from a religious congregation who had fled a volatile political environment in the East Midlands. The colony, established in 1620, became the second successful English settlement (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607) in what was to become the United States of America. The Pilgrims' story has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States.

[edit] Separatists in Scrooby The core of the group that would come to be known as the Pilgrims (known as the Pilgrim Fathers in the United States) were brought together by a common belief in the ideas promoted by Richard Clyfton, parson at All Saints' Parish Church in Babworth, West Retford, Nottinghamshire, between 1586 and 1605. This congregation held Separatist beliefs comparable to nonconforming movements (i.e., groups not in communion with the Church of England) led by Henry Barrowe, John Greenwood and Robert Browne. Unlike conforming Puritan groups who maintained their membership in and allegiance to the Church of England, Separatists held that their differences with the Church of England were irreconcilable and that their worship should be organized independently of the trappings, traditions and organization of a central state church.[1] William Brewster, a former diplomatic assistant to the Netherlands, was living in the Scrooby manor house, serving as postmaster for the village and bailiff to the Archbishop of York. Having been favorably impressed by Clyfton's services, he had begun participating in Separatist services led by John Smyth in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.[2] The Separatists had long been controversial. Under the 1559 Act of Uniformity, it was illegal not to attend official Church of England services, with a fine of 12d (£0.05; 2005 equivalent: about £5)[3] for each missed Sunday and holy day. The penalties for conducting unofficial services included imprisonment and larger fines. Under the policy of this time, Barrowe and Greenwood were executed for sedition in 1593.
During much of Brewster's tenure (1595-1606), the Archbishop was Matthew Hutton. He displayed some sympathy to the Puritan (but not to the Separatist) cause, writing to Robert Cecil, Secretary of State to James I in 1604:
The Puritans (whose phantasticall zeal I dislike) though they differ in Ceremonies & accidents, yet they agree with us in substance of religion, & I thinke all or the moste p[ar]te of them love his Ma[jes]tie, & the p[re]sente state, & I hope will yield to conformitie. But the Papistes are opposite & contrarie in very many substantiall pointes of religion, & cannot but wishe the Popes authoritie & popish religion to be established.[4]
It had been hoped that when James came to power, a reconciliation allowing independence would be possible, but the Hampton Court Conference of 1604 denied substantially all the concessions requested by Puritans, save for an English translation of the Bible. Following the Conference, in 1605, Clyfton was declared a nonconformist and stripped of his position at Babworth. Brewster invited Clyfton to live at his home.
Upon Hutton's 1606 death, Tobias Matthew was elected as his replacement. Matthew, one of James' chief supporters at the 1604 conference,[5] promptly began a campaign to purge the archdiocese of nonconforming influences, both separatists and papists. Disobedient clergy were replaced, and prominent Separatists were confronted, fined, and imprisoned. He is credited with driving recusants out of the country.[6][7]
At about the same time, Brewster arranged for a congregation to meet privately at the Scrooby manor house. Beginning in 1606, services were held with Clyfton as pastor, John Robinson as teacher and Brewster as the presiding elder. Shortly thereafter, Smyth and members of the Gainsborough group moved on to Amsterdam.[8] Brewster is known to have been fined £20 (2005 equivalent: about £2000) in absentia for his non-compliance with the church.[9] This followed his September 1607 resignation from the postmaster position,[10] about the time that the congregation had decided to follow the Smyth party to Amsterdam.[1][11]
Scrooby member William Bradford, of Austerfield, kept a journal of the congregation's events that would later be published as Of Plymouth Plantation. Of this time, he wrote:
But after these things they could not long continue in any peaceable condition, but were hunted & persecuted on every side, so as their former afflictions were but as flea-bitings in comparison of these which now came upon them. For some were taken & clapt up in prison, others had their houses besett & watcht night and day, & hardly escaped their hands; and ye most were faine to flie & leave their howses & habitations, and the means of their livelehood.[1]
In the Columbia Encyclopedia, it is stated that "Although not actively persecuted, the group was subjected to ecclesiastical investigation and to the mockery, criticism, and disfavor of their neighbors.".[12]
[edit] Migration to Amsterdam Unable to obtain the papers necessary to leave England, members of the congregation agreed to leave surreptitiously, resorting to bribery to obtain passage. One documented attempt was in 1607, following Brewster's resignation, when members of the congregation chartered a boat in Boston, Lincolnshire. This turned out to be a sting operation, with all arrested upon boarding. The entire party was jailed for one month awaiting arraignment, at which time all but seven were released. Missing from the record is for how long the remainder were held, but it is known that the leaders made it to Amsterdam about a year later.
In a second departure attempt in the spring of 1608, arrangements were made with a Dutch merchant to pick up church members along the Humber estuary at Immingham near Grimsby, Lincolnshire. The men had boarded the ship, at which time the sailors spotted an armed contingent approaching. The ship quickly departed before the women and children could board; the stranded members were rounded up but then released without charges.
Ultimately, at least 150 of the congregation did make their way to Amsterdam, meeting up with the Smyth party, who had joined with the Exiled English Church led by Francis Johnson (1562-1617), Barrowe's successor. The Scrooby party remained there for about one year, citing growing tensions between Smyth and Johnson.[11] Smyth had embraced the idea of believer's baptism, which Clyfton and Johnson opposed.
Robinson decided that it would be best to remove his congregation from the fray, and permission to settle in Leiden was secured in 1609. With the congregation reconstituted as the English Exiled Church in Leyden, Robinson now became pastor; Clyfton, advanced in age, chose to stay behind in Amsterdam.[13]

Leiden was a thriving industrial center,[14] and many members were well able to support themselves working at Leiden University or in the textile, printing and brewing trades. Others were less able to bring in sufficient income, hampered by their rural backgrounds and the language barrier; for those, accommodations were made on an estate bought by Robinson and three partners.[15]
Of their years in Leiden, Bradford wrote:
"For these & other reasons they removed to Leyden, a fair & bewtifull citie, and of a sweete situation, but made more famous by ye universitie wherwith it is adorned, in which of late had been so many learned man. But wanting that traffike by sea which Amerstdam injoyes, it was not so beneficiall for their outward means of living & estats. But being now hear pitchet they fell to such trads & imployments as they best could; valewing peace & their spirituall comforte above any other riches whatsoever. And at length they came to raise a competente & comforteable living, but with hard and continuall labor.[16]
Brewster had been teaching English at the university, and in 1615, Robinson enrolled to pursue his doctorate. There, he participated in a series of debates, particularly regarding the contentious issue of Calvinism versus Arminianism (siding with the Calvinists against the Remonstrants). See the Synod of Dort. Brewster, in a venture financed by Thomas Brewer, acquired typesetting equipment about 1616 and began publishing the debates through a local press.[17]
The Netherlands was, however, a land whose culture and language were strange and difficult for the English congregation to understand or learn. Their children were becoming more and more Dutch as the years passed by. The congregation came to believe that they faced eventual extinction if they remained there.

This gap between the generosity and good intentions of Americans and the actual impact of their giving on those in need is the central concern of the National Commission on Philanthropy and Civic Renewal. When government stands for young and old, charity is represented. Socialism tramples God given inalienable rights. Immoral. Intelligent design is the assertion that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection."[1][2] It is a modern form of the traditional teleological argument for the existence of God, but one which avoids specifying the nature or identity of the designer.[3] The idea was developed by a group of American creationists who reformulated their argument in the creation-evolution controversy to circumvent court rulings that prohibit the teaching of creationism as science.[4][5][6] Intelligent design's leading proponents, all of whom are associated with the Discovery Institute, a politically conservative think tank,[7][8] believe the designer to be the God of Christianity. II Early Forms of Communism Communist ideas can be traced back to ancient times. In his 4th-century bc work The Republic, Greek philosopher Plato maintained that minimizing social inequality would promote civil peace and good government. In 1777 the Continentals captured a British army, leading to France entering the war on the side of the Americans in early 1778, and evening the military strength with Britain. Frances Wright (September 6, 1795 – December 131852) also widely known as Fanny Wright, was a Scottish-born lecturer, writer, freethinker, feminist, abolitionist, and social reformer, who became a U. S. citizen in 1825. She lived with her uncle, a wealthy merchant in Dundee, Scotland. Her father was the designer of Dundee trade tokens. When James Wright and his wife died, they left three children. Fanny was orphaned at the age of three, but was left with a substantial inheritance. Fanny was taken to England and raised in the guardianship of her maternal aunt. Upon her coming of age, she returned to Scotland and spent her winters in study and writing, and her summers visiting the Scottish Highlands. By the age of 18, she had written her first book. She immigrated to the United States in 1818, and with her sister toured from 1818 to 1820. She believed in universal equality in education, and feminism. She also attacked organized religion, greed, and capitalism. Along with Robert Owen, Wright demanded that the government offer free boarding schools. In the American vocabulary, "welfare" has often had a limited meaning, most commonly associated in public discourse with public assistance to mothers with dependent children. Yet government welfare can also be given a broader definition, as a general social safety net designed to support citizens in need. Under this definition, "welfare" refers to government protections for workers' incomes, which are often threatened by structural economic change under the free market system. Human nature is the concept that there are a set of characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling and acting, that all 'normal' human beings have in common.[1] The branches of science associated with the study of human nature include sociology, sociobiology and psychology, particularly evolutionary psychology and developmental psychology. Philosophers and theologians have also carried out research on human nature. If men were angels, we wouldn't need government. We delegate to our government. Developing the theme further, governments by their very nature, will always abuse the power with which they are entrusted. That is an inalienable fact of life. To that extent, governments are not our friends. They are our enemies, more so our own, which has the capability to do infinite damage. If we could do without governments, the world would be a better place. Since we cannot, we tolerate them, simply because the alternative – of not having a government - is worse. But we the people must recognize that governments are not our friends. We must constrain them, control them, limit their ability to act and ensure that the power they hold is exercised for us, on our terms, not theirs. The government should fear the people, not the other way around. In an effective system, we delegate the powers of supervision and constraint to specialists – just as we delegate growing our food to specialists. The latter are called farmers, the former politicians or, more specifically, parliamentarians. They, the parliamentarians are not – or should not be - the "government". Actually, the better word is "executive", a word not used often enough in this country. The problem we have at the moment – one of many, although this one is important – is that the executive and the parliament are too close. The one draws its members from the other, to the extent that the role of the one is submerged by the other. The roles must be separated, if parliament - our parliament is properly to do its job. This is for us to demand – we are the people and the power is us. When we hear politicians offer their ideas for "reform”, by all means we can and should listen politely. But no politician should be awarded approval uncritically, unthinkingly. It is for us to decide, not them, where the constraints lie. Thus, with "reform" suddenly on the agenda, we cannot and should not allow the politicians to make the running. Inescapably, because their world view is different from ours, they will fashion the constraints and the controls in a way that suits them, not us. If, on the other hand, we choose to lie back and allow them to dictate the agenda, we will not get what we and the generations that follow us deserve. But we will deserve what we get. Give me liberty or give me death. No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. Government is doing what It’s supposed to do. We didn't get here overnight. A republic is a form of government in which the head of state is not a hereditary monarch[1] and the people (or at least a part of its people)[2] have an impact on its government.[3][4] The word 'republic' is derived from the Latin phrase res publica which can be translated as "public affairs". Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology and composition. The most common definition of a republic is a state without a monarch,[5] In republics such as the US and France the executive is legitimated both by a constitution and by popular suffrage. In the United States Founding Fathers like James Madison defined republic in terms of representative democracy as opposed to only having direct democracy[6], and this usage is still employed by many viewing themselves as "republicans".[7] In modern political science, republicanism refers to a specific ideology that is based on civic virtue and is considered distinct from ideologies such as liberalism.[8]Democracy is a form of government in which the right to govern is vested in the citizens of a country or a state and exercised through a majority rule. It is derived from the Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía (info)), "popular government",[1] which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos), "people" and κράτος (krátos), "rule, strength" in the middle of the fifth-fourth century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC.[2] A democracy can denote either direct or indirect rule by the people.[3] In political theory, democracy describes a small number of related forms of government and also a political philosophy. Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of 'democracy',[4] there are two principles that any definition of democracy includes. The first principle is that all citizens, not invested with the power to govern, have equal access to power and the second that all citizens enjoy legitimized freedoms and liberties. The Constitution The Federal Convention convened in the State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would draft an entirely new frame of government. All through the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated, and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among the chief points at issue were how much power to allow the central government, how many representatives in Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected--directly by the people or by the state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of cooperative statesmanship and the art of compromise. Becoming Men: Feats of our Forefathers by Alex and Brett Harris We're all familiar with names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams and John Hancock. These men, along with others, were our forefathers and the founders of our nation. They signed the Declaration of Independence and wrote the Constitution. They won the Revolutionary War. Not only that, but their incredible accomplishments weren't limited to their adult lives. John Hancock entered Harvard University when he was 13 years old. Samuel Adams completed his master's degree before he turned 21. Thomas Jefferson frequently studied 15 hours a day during his time at the College of William and Mary. Of course, at this point it's easy for all of us normal people to place these guys in the "superhuman" or "so-smart-it's-disgusting" category and move on. However, there's a danger in thinking that God simply blessed America with a generation chock-full of patriotic super-nerds just in time to write the Constitution. You see, once we label people as a "geniuses" we usually cease to feel the need to learn from them or to be challenged by their example. The truth is that our forefathers weren't nerds and their early college entrances were not unusual for their time. Rather, what stood these young men apart from their peers was (1) a seemingly corporate sense that age could not keep them from accomplishing great things, and (2) an extraordinary drive that we like to call the "do hard things" mentality. As we explore the different ways these traits played out in the early years of some of our most famous forefathers, our hope is that we will all gain a greater vision of our own God-given potential and calling. George Washington: "He Didn't Mark Time" We all know George Washington as the first President of the United States, the Commander of the Revolutionary Army and the Father of our Country. These are impressive titles and the jobs that went with them couldn't be more difficult. But a quick glance at Washington's teenage and young adult years indicates that these weren't his first big titles or even his first weighty responsibilities. Rather, what comes through is a man who, from his childhood, chose to do hard things, and then did those things to the best of his ability. According to the George Washington Bicentennial Committee (WBC), Washington was born into a "middling rank" family, lost his father when he was 11, and was never considered particularly bright or educated by his peers. Nevertheless, he developed a "passion for education [that] caused him to concentrate on hard study" and he mastered geometry, trigonometry, and surveying by the time he was 16 years old. At the age of 17, Washington received his first big job when Lord Thomas Fairfax, one of the largest landowners in Virginia (we're talking 5.3 million acres here), named him official surveyor for Culpepper County, Virginia. At the time surveyors were some of the highest paid workers in the country, second only to trial lawyers. This means that Washington, at age 17, was earning today's equivalent of over $100,000 a year. Don't get this wrong. Washington wasn't an ornament who sat in an office while adult men did the real work. His journals reflect the rigor of frontier life and the WBC describes the appointment as "the fitting of a man's tasks to the square young shoulder of a boy without cutting those tasks to a boy's measure." One of Franklin's famous characteristics was his respect, tolerance and promotion of all churches. Referring to his experience in Philadelphia, he wrote in his autobiography, "new Places of worship were continually wanted, and generally erected by voluntary Contribution, my Mite for such purpose, find your purpose. There is seemingly no area of living that is safe from attack against the traditional authorities of the family, church, and government. By some it is viewed a virtue to question authority, and, if not a vice, then a character weakness to submit to authority. The new cool in many congregations, and a driving force in many Christian fads is to appear irreverent and borderline defiant. Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Tolerance in the face of tyranny is no virtue. The evils of tyranny are rarely seen but by him who resists it. An official is someone who holds an office (function or mandate, regardless whether it carries an actual working space with it) in an organization or government and participates in the exercise of authority (either his own or that of his superior and/or employer, public or legally private). A government official or functionary is an official who is involved in public administration or government, through either election, appointment, or employment. A bureaucrat is a member of the bureaucracy. An elected official is a person who is an official by virtue of an election. Officials may also be appointed ex officio (by virtue of another office, often in a specified capacity, such as presiding, advisory, secretary). Some official positions may be inherited. The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible." In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marque explains, “There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution." onckton, who was the science advisor to Britain's Thatcher administration, says natural variability is the cause of most of the Earth's recent warming. As to fundamentals that state was excellent (1.3-8), but in a subtle way two forms of error were at work: The first was legality in its Alexandrian form of asceticism, "touch not, taste not," with a trace of the Judaic observance of "days"; the object of which was the mortification of the body (cf Rom 8.13). The second form of error was false mysticism, "intruding into those things which he hath not seen"--the result of philosophic speculation. Theophilus of ....Antioch.... [To Autolychus, 2, p. 100]. Irenæus [Against Heresies, 3.14.1], quotes expressly from this "Epistle to the Colossians" (....Col.... 4:14). Clement of ....Alexandria.... [Miscellanies, 1. P. 325], quotes Col 1:28; also elsewhere he quotes Col 1:9-11, 28; 2:2, &c.; Col 2:8; 3:12, 14; 4:2, 3, &c. Tertullian [The Prescription against Heretics, 7], quotes Col 2:8; [On the Resurrection of the Flesh, 23], and quotes Col 2:12, 20; 3:1, 2. Origen [Against Celsus, 5.8], quotes ....Col.... 2:18, 19. .. .. Colosse (or, as it is spelt in the best manuscripts, "Colassæ") was a city of ....Phrygia...., on the river Lycus, a branch of the Meander. The Church there was mainly composed of Gentiles (compare ....Col.... 2:13). Alford infers from ..Col.. 2:1 (see on [2392]....Col.... 2:1), that Paul had not seen its members, and therefore could not have been its founder, as Theodoret thought. ....Col.... 1:7, 8 suggests the probability that Epaphras was the first founder of the Church there. The date of its foundation must have been subsequent to Paul's visitation, "strengthening in order" all the churches of ..Galatia.. and Phrygia (Ac 18:24); for otherwise we must have visited the Colossians, which ....Col.... 2:1 implies he had not. Had Paul been their father in the faith, he would doubtless have alluded to the fact, as in 1Co 3:6, 10; 4:15; 1Th 1:5; 2:1. It is only in the Epistles, Romans and Ephesians, and this Epistle, such allusions are wanting; in that to the Romans, because, as in this ....Church.. of ..Colosse...., he had not been the instrument of their conversion; in that to the Ephesians, owing to the general nature of the Epistle. Probably during the "two years" of Paul's stay at Ephesus, when "all which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus" (Ac 19:10, 26), Epaphras, Philemon, Archippus, Apphia and the other natives of Colosse, becoming converted at Ephesus, were subsequently the first sowers of the Gospel seed in their own city. This will account for their personal acquaintance with, and attachment to, Paul and his fellow ministers, and for his loving language as to them, and their counter salutations to him. So also with respect to "them at ..Laodicea..," (....Col.... 2:1). .. .. The OBJECT of the Epistle is to counteract Jewish false teaching, by setting before the Colossians their true standing in Christ alone (exclusive of all other heavenly beings), the majesty of His person, and the completeness of the redemption wrought by Him; hence they ought to be conformed to their risen Lord, and to exhibit that conformity in all the relations of ordinary life Col 2:16, "new moon, sabbath days," shows that the false teaching opposed in this Epistle is that of Judaizing Christians.
