The Fourth Kind

Today I sit here with a big smile on my face. I have that smile because I am doing some research and laughing at what many are now doing regarding the legitimacy of the film The Fourth Kind. I find it humorous because while some applaud certain films like The Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity, some are upset who thinks the makers of The Fourth Kind are trying to get one over on the movie going audience. Here is all I know; I felt Paranormal Activity was highly overrated, obviously false while following a tired formula, I come home interested enough in The Fourth Kind to do some research and see what is true and what isn’t. This first person account does something many other first person account movies have forgotten about, it uses some originality that causes some of the audience to believe the story they see on screen.

The premise of The Fourth Kind is we are seeing footage of a study and research regarding Alien Abductions and tragedies that have occurred in Nome Alaska. The filmmakers reportedly mix in real footage with dramatized scenes. The style of the film, whether legitimate or not, is unique, fresh and even with the subject matter, entertaining. Without speculating on whether the events or some of the footage in the film is legitimate or not does not change the interest I had when leaving the theater as to the reality of the film, or the desire to do some research, neither does it change the intriguing questions the movie raises about not just aliens, but evil and the likelihood of the existence of God, and ultimately what type of God is God.

As mentioned earlier, The Fourth Kind is a first person, supposed real account of events in Nome Alaska. One of the things that makes this different, and leaves some room for speculation is the reported style of mixing in supposed real footage alongside dramatized footage via split and sometimes quad screen views. It draws us into the story, and the directorial style of following the split screens keeps our eyes moving in such a way that at least my brain was working constantly trying to figure out the difference between reality and entertainment, searching for truth and reality or fake footage with the sole intent to entertain. First time director, Olatunde Osunsanmi does a credible job of mixing in footage while at the same time following the supposed real psychologist, Abbey Tyler, played nicely by Milla Jovovich. We also have brief appearances of Sheriff August played by Will Paton. Both do a credible job, and the supporting cast also play nicely to the story and questions raised by the film.

One of the concepts presented in the film is the visitation to earth some 5,000 years prior to Christ of apparent aliens. Many have seen the footage of concepts of this nature but one of the things the film does is it raises the question of God in relation to the alien visitations. We see this by the usage from the aliens of ancient, dead languages, where when interpreted speak specifically of a savior and of God. In one interesting scene in the movie, Dr. Tyler is asked if she thought the beings were in fact God. She states no because she felt they were void of hope. An interesting concept, if God exists, then hope has to be present and a part of his personality. This is consistent with the aspects of hope presented by Jesus and some of the writers of the New Testament.

An interesting question of faith is also addressed in The Fourth Kind. How receptive are individuals in accepting the stories of devoutly religious people when those stories are outside the realm of faith? We see Dr. Tyler for example praying around the table in Jesus name, yet she is ultimately challenged to tackle concepts outside of her faith, and her experiences lead her to conclusions that are not only outside the norm of her faith, but outside the norm of many within society. The challenge of accepting those who are different is presented in a challenging way that at least caused me to think. I even noticed the questions on national message boards like IMDB that has people asking the question of can Aliens coexist with Christianity? This is an interesting question that seems to be a part of the movies intent, but also shown is the challenge to foundational beliefs and ones ability or desire to hold onto those beliefs when they are challenged.

While the challenge to belief regarding aliens may be outside the norm or possibility of reality for many people of faith, at one time, so was the concept of the ability of the earth being round, the earth revolving around the sun, or even the possibility of a person of non Anglo decent having a soul. Many things once held as truths have changed with time. There seems to be ample evidence of the reality of UFO’s, Aliens, or even Demons as presented by some. The Fourth Kind while not adequately answering those questions did at least have me and others in the theater, entertained and questioning the possibility.

I liked this film, much more than Paranormal Activity. As I spoke to some people as we were leaving the theater, they felt the same way. There are some aspects I would have liked to have seen addressed, but I suspect that to address some of those areas in the movie would have answered the questions many are asking. Personally I doubt the story has much legitimacy to it, but that doesn’t devalue the questions it raises. There could have been better character development and while the editing was choppy, it fit the style. Overall I was rather pleased and think that most that enjoy these types of film will be as well.

On a scale of 1–10, while not perfect, The Fourth Kind was better than Paranormal Activity, so if I added a 2 to the score for Paranormal activity, The Fourth Kind would have a deserving 8.

Is It Time To Renounce Christianity?

I have been thinking a lot lately, about a lot of things. Do I hold my hurt in? Do I confront those whose words and actions seem so dishonest? Don’t make assumptions here, this isn’t my thoughts about just people of faith but towards people in general, however, it is those who say they are Christians, (followers of Jesus) who really have me dumbfounded.

Some people don’t like the fact that I wear my emotions on my sleeve, to those who would deny me, or anyone of that right, you have no idea how selfish your wishes are and how much potential harm it does to the person who is trying to be emotionally healthy! One of the best books in the last few years I have read is The Emotionally Health Church by Peter Scazzero. This book is a wonderful study on the person of Jesus and the fact that while he was fully divine, he was also fully human, complete with human emotions and mannerisms. If the Son of God could be hurt, joyful, happy, sad and the whole gambit of emotional feelings, then why do we assume we as humans can’t or shouldn’t?

I have to tell you, I love the bride of Christ, commonly known of as the church. I love her to the point I have studied her a great deal, and while the church isn’t per say a building, she is a people who are wholly devoted followers of Jesus. She is much more than that though, unfortunately she isn’t much different than the whore we see illustrated in the book of Hosea in the Bible. I love the quote that Anthony Campolo uses of St. Augustine in the movie, Lord Save Us From Your Followers. “Are you talking about unfaithfulness? You're talking about the church," Campolo says in the film. "... It's a whore. But she's also my mother. I wouldn't be a Christian today ... if it wasn't for this thing called `the church."' I firmly believe, the love that is demanded for Christ, for the church, can only be fully understood with a complete study of the book of Hosea in the Old Testament.

In Hosea we see the story of a prophet of God who is called to marry a whore. We see Hosea’s wife isn’t someone who was simply converted but even after marriage, remains a whore, yet God has an expectation that Hosea stay with his wife, and that he remain faithful to her, despite her whoredom. I could go on here, but I would encourage a good read of the book, it is rather insightful and thought provoking.

What does any of this have to do with my current state of emotions? It actually has a lot to do with them, despite my writing on this subject for years now; it seems as if many in the church, many individuals who say they are followers of Jesus simply keep on whoring. I am not talking about those they keep in contact with, I am not talking about the company the keep, or the habits they have, I am talking about not taking seriously the call of Jesus to be honest, people of integrity, loving, and of their word. I am especially talking to people who present themselves as leaders in the faith perspective commonly known of as Christianity. Yes I know I can point fingers back at myself, but I have tried to maintain integrity and my willingness to point this out also indicates I am willing for people to hold me accountable, the cause of Jesus is more important than the image of Mike Furches. Some people who say they are followers of Jesus treat people like property, garbage, and of little or no value, yet these are often times the very people Jesus came and died for, he offered his full love to, yet, we make excuses to be so unlike Jesus. It has me so bothered, it is such a cancer on society, that I have literally, no exaggeration, contemplated the need to renounce Christianity. As followers of Jesus we are to lead people to the ways of Jesus, instead, we lie, cheat, make excuses and find ways to not love, be honest, and be people of integrity.

Now a quick note here, also understand, the word, the concept of Christian is something we were called by others early on in the history of the Church. In the First Century the concepts of being a Christian implied being like Jesus. Unfortunately, in the same way the word gay don’t mean what it did 20 years ago, when a word like fag may mean something different in England than it does in the United States or even when a Toboggan is totally different in East Tennessee than it is in Kansas, we have to take seriously the contemporary definitions of certain words. We have to take seriously how others hear us and how we in return hear them. When doing that, I challenge, is Christianity seen in a positive light? Instead of making excuses, instead of blaming others for their problem, why don’t we who say we follow Jesus see those individuals who see Christianity as a problem of more importance than the perspective they take? We have to understand, the problem many have with Christianity isn’t because of the people who have the negative view they do, it is because many of us who call ourselves Christian have given them good reason to have the views they do. Why don’t we address that problem instead of throwing blame back in the face of those who disagree with us?

Now the key word in all of my concern is love. I simply see so little of it, it bothers me. I can tell you of Christians in regards to my real friends who are gay, (as opposed to the token friends so many Christians refer to, when in reality they don’t really have gay friends in the definition of what a real friend is,) judgments are made yet no love is ever offered, no effort to understand is ever given. An example of this is quickly viewed when talking to my Christian friends about the movie Brokeback Mountain, they refuse to see it under any conditions, yet totally ignoring the human desire to have real friendships, and to have real companionship, the real struggle that many who are not only gay but straight go through. Instead of seeing that need, which we can help with, they see the need of something they see as being taboo, and then in reality, ignoring the needs of a people Christ loves with a passion. I see this attitude of exclusion and dishonesty so much I often wonder if we have read, and actually tried to apply the concepts as presented in the book of James, and other passages of Scripture to our lives. Gandhi was so right when he said, “I love your Jesus, but I don’t love your Christians, your Christians are so unlike your Jesus.” His observations were so right on the money, but unfortunately, the concepts for many who call themselves Christian have become little more than a cliché. I can’t help but believe the whore John writes about in the book of Revelation is the whore many of us have become.

Now I write this with some caution and trepidation. I realize there are many who love Jesus and have offered him exactly what he demands, their all. They love unconditionally, they serve willingly, they seek out integrity and honesty with all of their hearts. This doesn’t mean they never fail, we all do, but the attitude, the struggle that occurs when failure occurs is what determines a person’s heart, not the fact they fail. I realize there are those who will take this as a judgment; those are those who, likely have me as a friend at facebook, myspace or some other social networking organization that has allowed those definitions to determine a definition of friend different than what a real friend is. Here is the shocking truth, I have over 5,000 people who subscribe to my writings, I have millions that read them via various forums, but you know what, I think I can count my real friends on 10 fingers, maybe a few more than that, but not many. I have had people I have requested real friendship with, some work for large ministry organizations and some have spoken about the need for real friendship, I have visited non Christian businesses and the friends there are more real than friends at businesses ran and operated by Christians. I wish it were different, I desire, I seek, I value, I covet friendship and love, I think it is a part of the way God created us all. It hurts though; it hurts when people say they offer that and then take it away quicker than it takes to turn the channel on a television remote. It is why so many who are hurting are so reluctant to trust, and develop real friendship, then some wonder why this is they way it is.

Now here is the reason I write this today. I am blessed, honored, and pleased that many of my real friends are not Christian. They are real people who I have the honor to serve. I want to serve them, I want to love them, I want to share all that Jesus offers those individuals, more. As much as I desire these things, it becomes increasingly difficult because those who do call themselves Christians seem to have more and more reasons as to why they can’t do the things Jesus called them to do and be. If I feel this way, how much more do those seeking love, companionship, friendship see and feel this?

I am using the black and white prophetic and evangelistic tendencies God has created me with more today than normal, I use them with caution, but I want those who call themselves Christians, please do more, please love more! Be as much like Jesus as possible more! Display love more! Be people of integrity more! Be people of your word more! Be real more! You may not realize it, but when you do more of these things, it is easier for people to accept the message you say you believe in because they see what is real, not fake. It is here that Gandhi’s quote will no longer be a cliché, it will become a falsehood. It is then the Christians who seem so unlike their Jesus, will in reality display to the world around them that Jesus lives. He does for me, I have never regretted turning my life over to him, he has been faithful, he has been real, I want what he has for me for those he has called me to love. I want him for my real friends; I want him for those I desire to have friendship with. I can only pray and hope that we all have that same desire. I have learned that my faith in Jesus has never let me down, his friendship has always been there, and his reality is the one constant in my life. It is because of my knowledge of this that I want to share with hurting, lonely people, yet it is also why I want those of us who represent him to do what we are supposed to do.

Now as to accountability, I am sorry if I have offended, that wasn’t my intent, but I want more than ever those who don’t know; don’t accept the person of Jesus to please get to know about Jesus. Don’t judge him by me or the actions of those who say they follow him. I ask you to judge Jesus by the actions of Jesus, his words, his life, his love. To those I have let down in the past, I am sorry; hold me accountable, I don’t want to be one of those who pretend they care. I want to be real; I want to be to you what I need, a friend, someone who cares, and someone who loves you for who you are and where you are at.

A few years ago when I started The Virtual Pew, I established as a part of our vision the need to reach one person a day. Not because we didn’t see value in far more than one person, but because we believe God really does see each person, loves each person individually. Each individual that is important to God should also be important to us. I hope, pray, and seek after God and those who follow him to remind me of that each day. It isn’t the followers of Jesus which get me down and discouraged, it is more often than not, those who say they follow Jesus, who say they are Christians and in reality find every reason in the world to not act like him. For the times I have done that, I am sorry, please hold me accountable. My faith and my God have done far too much for me to not take that responsibility seriously. I hope you understand.

They Like Jesus but Not the Church: Responding to Culture's Objections to Christianity

Tallgrass, A Beautiful Fall In The Heartland

On the Plains of Kansas, every October during the Fall Harvest, there is an event that brings attention to the fair city of Wichita. It is known as Tallgrass, but despite what some may think, Tallgrass isn’t some form of vegetation, it isn’t the bastard brother of Shortgrass, it is none of those things. It is something that is garnishing more and more attention from the Independent film world and this year, I was honored to cover this up and coming Film Festival for Hollywood Jesus and The Virtual Pew. The film festival places an emphasis on Independent Film and this year, the seventh for the festival, was as good as ever, and it continues to grow despite what some past supporters may believe. Tallgrass is at a point where it has the chance to take off to become one of the premiere film festivals in the country.

This year was a rather interesting year as a number of events placed some challenges on the festival, among those was a large theater chain in the community who pulled out most of their support. Their reasoning according to one insider is because they essentially believe, “Tallgrass has gone as far as it will go and there is nothing else for us to gain.” If this is true, some need to understand, sometimes one participates not so much because there is something to gain, but because of the support of the fans which have largely contributed to the success of a business that involves going to the movies.

It is a shame this occurred as the people of Wichita are largely dependent upon this one theater chain as they operate a number of theaters in the community, including a complex in the downtown area that had received a multi-million dollar grant in the last year. In fact, this theater chain virtually has a monopoly on the movie going industry in this city. Many in the community believe this theater chain should be obligated to support the arts in the community, including of course, film. The chain, Warren Theaters has been a large supporter over the years, but this year, their withdrawal of hosting films for the festival put the organizers in turmoil to find appropriate hosts for the events. This festival that has a chance to take off and become more, was in fact hurt and the reputation of the festival lessened due to the actions in part of the Warren Theaters. The reality is that depending on who you talk to, Warren has plans on being back in the future. Only the actions of future support will indicate who to believe regarding this concern. The fact that the events that occurred did in fact occur, is a shame, but leave it to the ferocious independent spirit of Wichitans, and those involved in The Tallgrass Film Festival to work to make more with less. As a result, while many a movie going audience has a sour taste in their mouth towards a theater chain they have supported over the years, they have a refreshed and exciting attitude towards the efforts of the Tallgrass organizers to move forward with this event. Many noticed the festival this year didn’t worry about featuring a theater complex but instead highlighted and featured the city of Wichita.

With over 400 submissions this year prior to selections, Tallgrass organizers had their hands full, but thankfully they found 5 venues in the downtown area plus Wichita State University to host the various events and screenings. There were other locations which provided services, and attendees this year was able to attend most everything within a 3 block radius. It would have still been nice to see this event take place in one of the cities premiere locations, the downtown square in the Old Towne District that is the home of the Old Town Warren. Especially since recent renovations to that location would have provided a wonderful atmosphere in a unique location. My personal hope for the future is to see the possibility of combining the efforts of this year, while at the same time using the downtown Old Town Warren Complex. Unfortunately, while The Warren Theaters did make available the use of some projection units, (at a reduced fee), there has been obvious discord between many individuals related to both sides as has been seen on bulletin boards and in private conversations with some of the individuals involved.

This is a sad statement to the potential future success for The Tallgrass Film Festival. I have been one that has been a supporter of Warren Theaters, will again in the future, but as a local owner, who has started chains in other locations outside of Wichita, and Kansas, I had hoped for more ongoing community support of especially Independent Film. If having other options in Wichita, many a fan of movies would now choose to attend those theaters. This has a potentially negative consequence for the festival, but if this year’s actions and efforts are any indication of the committees desires to see this festival continue and expand, there is also clear indication that hope exists. This isn’t a slam against either the festival or Warren Theater’s whose withdrawal also cost a reported minimum of $20,000 in cash and more in support (a number provided by inside sources), then not only the festival looses, but the fans of movies, which support the theaters in this community also suffer.

While there were many good things about Tallgrass, while talking to various individuals associated with the festival, as well as the Warren Theaters, along with fans the above background needed to be mentioned as it seemed to at the very least be a dominant point of discussion in various locations around Wichita during this years events. That is a shame because unfortunately, those things could easily have outshined the reality of what this festival represents.

In order to understand the significance of a festival like this, one has to look at those submitting film, as well as those in attendance and the awards it has handed out in the past. The premiere award handed out each year at Tallgrass is known as The Ad Astra Award. This award is named after the Kansas state motto, “Ad Astra Per Aspera” (To The Stars Through Difficulties.) The award is presented to an individual chosen by The Wichita Association for the Motion Picture Arts (WAMPA) who has made significant contributions to the art and process of filmmaking or the film industry. Past recipients of the award include, in 2004, Cloris Leachman, in 2005, late Film Festival Founder Timothy Gruver, 2006, Laura Lee Bahr, 2007, Don LaFontaine, 2008, Dan Glickman, and this years recipient, Seymour Cassel. Each of these individuals has significantly contributed to the world of Independent Film and each has had unique and wonderful contributions to the world of film in general.

This year the festival, as mentioned earlier had over 400 submissions. Those included eventual award winners, Sweet Crude, an Independent Documentary which looks at the 25 year non violent resistance to the oil companies’ damage to the people of Niger which has an average oil spill of more than one per day in their Delta region over the course of a year. It is a documentary which looks at the plight of the people to stand up for their future, and their children. Sweet Crude won the Audience Award for Choice Feature Film. Winning the award for Audience Award Winning Short Film was Lost Paradise from France and Israel. This film is billed as a modern day Adam and Eve story.

Tallgrass also included various other great films, among my favorites were the feature films Saving Luna, and Kabul24. Also featured were such films as Fish out of Water, Gogol Bordello Non Stop, The Only Good Indian which also had in attendance for the duration of the festival, star Wes Studi, Reach for Me with Seymour Cassel, also in attendance, Underbelly with star Pleasant Gehman in attendance, Mommy Is At The Hairdressers, Tony Mannero, The Worlds Greatest Dad with numerous other features, documentaries, and shorts. Over 3 days my schedule had me seeing 10 features, and 26 shorts. I will be featuring reviews on my favorites but this festival is so ambitious, and so successful in what it is attempting to do, that I was in film making heaven for 3 days as were many others. There is simply no way to see everything, and any attendee will be greatly pleased. In fact, I would hope in the future that even more people would come out. My two favorite films were actually sparse in attendance, and both deserving of much higher numbers of people in the seats. I can’t help but believe the locations of these films had some reasoning as to the low numbers in the seats. A general location, like a movie theater with multiple screens, would be ideal, of course I have already written as to why that didn’t take place.

The above is not to say that there can’t be, or shouldn’t be improvements to Tallgrass. I believe an expansion of views on the selection committees may also be appropriate. While the selection committee has done a wonderful job I was amazed at speaking to several members which had not seen some of the films submitted. I also believe it would be appropriate to look outside of traditional genres. I would personally love to see the inclusion of horror, and of course, while there is a ton of junk related to faith based movies, (not just Christian, but all forms of faith based movies), there is also quality avant-garde films that are exceptionally well done within the independent spectrum that include feature, horror, documentary, and short. I am not speaking of lessening the quality of film, but including more of the independent work within these genres of all faith spectrums. While there are some that would claim Tallgrass has done this, I would assure you, at least over the course of the last several years, with the exception of Kabul24 this year, I haven’t personally seen it. A larger view on the selection committee would help with this; of course this may mean that some like me would have to be willing to help out. That is a fair expectation. I love all film, including quality horror, and quality faith based film, despite the religious worldview being presented. One of the beautiful things about film, is its ability to educate, in a world filled with spiritual individuals, various spiritual views should be welcomed, including the views of people we may not agree with.

In a time when finance and personal difficulties seem to be so prevalent in society, it is nice to have a venue to find escape. For many individuals that escape, which provides so many things that are needed in society, such as hope, inspiration and more, are found in film. While I am grateful for an industry that provides that on a large scale, I have found that Independent Film maintains a spirit that is largely lost to so many people. It maintains a spirit of adventure, hope, and inspiration though for a very simple reason. I think that reason is largely centered on the reality that those people, those organizations making those independent films are individuals that are making them out of an almost pure love, if not a pure love of the forum they are involved in. They are making film about subjects they love, subjects they have experienced and in fact live. These are films that often if ever, have the budgets to advertise and promote. They are largely dependent on word of mouth and film festival success in order to get the word out about the quality of their product. I can’t speak for all films at Tallgrass, but I can speak for what I saw. I saw some of the best films I have seen all year, and in the case of Saving Luna, quite possibly the most moving inspirational movie of the year. To the people who organize and put on The Tallgrass Film Festival, I say thank you, I say thank you for bringing one a premiere event to the plains of our country, to the center of our country, Mid America where we can indeed find out, the people of the Heartland can love good, quality, exceptional film, with an Independent Spirit and attitude that should be envied across the country. Hopefully that spirit continues, it continues with or without the support of the powers that be, especially the powers that have made their fortunes from the movie going audience that loves film, are a part of the future or not. For some reason I believe it will continue, and will continue to grow in quality. Why? Quite simple, that same spirit that drives independent film, I believes drives Tallgrass, for that, this one regular guy who is blessed to write about movies, her stars, and her attributes, also believes in the spirit of those movies, and of course, the spirit of Tallgrass.

The following are a few film clips that I can recommend which are related to the festival. Just click on the video, if the video don't appear, click on the direct link

Paranormal Activity

Sometimes personal experiences add to the effect of a film. Why certain things happen the way they do, when they do, is beyond reason at times, it is almost as if destiny is involved. So were my own experiences in seeing Paranormal Activity. This Independent Film has taken the industry by storm. This little film, with an ingenious marketing campaign, and a very small budget, even by independent standards, has blasted into theaters, taking number one in the box office last week. This Blair Witch type of film, not only in marketing but style has other things that had at least this one viewer in wonder today.

Two things had recently happened to cause me to reflect more than usual after seeing this film, the first is coming right of the tails of my attendance to the Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita where Independent Film was celebrated. Fresh on the heals of hearing how Independent Film Makers have desires and wishes that are demonstrated in the success of films like Paranormal Activity. I couldn’t help but wonder, in the success of a film like this, how much is hard work, or destiny, and how much is a combination of both.

The second thing that caused me to think today was my own desire, my own search this morning for a quality video camera to do some video work, playing with the idea of doing some of my own documentary and film work. You have to see Paranormal Activity to understand the irony of this event.

Paranormal Activity is at the very least, a strange film that will suck some audience members in, while at the same time, have some techniques that will have students of film learning. While many will see two primary characters lives portrayed over the period of a few weeks, we should never loose sight of the fact that in many ways, the camera the couple is using to document their own paranormal experiences is also one of the characters of the film.

The premise of the film is simple, Micah, played by Micah Sloat is the live in boyfriend of Katie, played by Katie Featherston. Katie has had some paranormal activities bother her through a series of events through her life. The activity has resurfaced and Micah, a day trader decides to spend some bucks and purchase an elaborate video camera and set up to follow the events. Paranormal Activity follows the events of these two around the house as recorded on the video camera. As events unfold, Micah decides to try and control and ultimately challenge the entity tormenting Katie. While there are benefits to having largely unknown actors play their respective parts, the real compliment we see on screen fall under the direction of the film, the camera has a way of drawing the viewer into the story, and the intensity develops until the conclusion of the film that has as a semblance the closing scene in Quarantine.

There are challenges to Paranormal Activity. Following the traditions of films like The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, Quarantine and others, we see the camera here largely on stable platforms such as tables and tripods. While we still have some hand held footage, it is not as likely to cause as much physical sickness due to the style as other films like this. There are enough sequences that those impacted by footage like this may get physically sick. The story flows nicely, and outside of a few scenes, the characters stay in character. There are times the actors seem out of character but they largely play their roles quite nicely, a credit to the direction provided by Orin Peli who also wrote the screenplay. It does appear as if much of the screenplay was actually ad-libbed.

There are unique questions raised in the film, the primary one being the difference between ghosts and demons and the effects they have. While we see the appearance of a psychic who warns about the differences, there is never really any clarity and one finds themselves talking out loud to the screen at the often times seemingly apparent stupidity displayed by Micah. This type of conflict can at times make a movie work, an example here is in a movie like Halloween, but here, in a film we are supposed to believe or at least perceive as actual events, we only find ourselves thinking how stupid the characters are. Where character development takes place, this isn’t that big of a deal, but here, it hinders from what appears to be the purpose of the movie. The truth is, we know, and discover very little about any of the characters we see on screen.

There are other questions asked, questions related to love and commitment, as opposed to selfish desire. While these are worthy subjects, I felt Paranormal Activity to be somewhat lacking in the perspectives it gave. Maybe it was from coming off the heels of some impressive Independent work at the Tallgrass Film Festival. Even without this recent experience though, I just think there are many movies that do a much better job than what we experienced here.

I was expecting more from Paranormal Activity. I have heard many say it was one of the scariest movies they have ever seen. The marketing has certainly added to that mystique, but I found myself thinking, if people thought this was the scariest movie they had ever seen, they simply needed to get out and see more movies. I found myself laughing at various scenes where I was supposed to be scared. The anticipation of what was to be expected in some ways was scarier than what actually happened. I guess here, there is a valid point that often times, the things we think are bad, just aren’t that bad. The things we worry about just aren’t that serious. Of course the film makers of Paranormal Activity would have us see things differently; I just didn’t see it that way.

Many will assume that I didn’t Paranormal Activity was that great. That would be a fair assumption, but don’t get me wrong, it isn’t a bad movie; I enjoyed it and am glad I saw it. Just don’t think it is going to be as great as some have said, and if you like scary stories this one will be one to see, if for no other reason, the uniqueness of the story. From a technical perspective, I enjoyed the film, from a story perspective; I have seen many that are far better. I applaud the film, in some ways I am thrilled at the success, not for the content though but for the reality that a small independent film can still find success. While I would have liked a better story, it is no Blair Witch, and I have seen many films that have a better story, but the success of Paranormal Activity provides hope, it provides hope to all of those film makers out there who want more. In that regard, hopefully not only the fans, film makers, and theaters learn from this movie, but a industry that seems to be in dire need of inspiration for original stories. There are multitudes of Independent Films that are original, it would be nice to see some of those garnish even a small amount of success this film has gained.

On a scale of 1 – 10 for an okay movie, that I just didn’t think was all that great, a lackluster but positive 6

Night of the Living Dead, 40th Anniversary Edition

I have to admit, I have an admiration and appreciation for the George A. Romero film classic Night of the Living Dead. I actually shared my story about it some time ago in 2007, and am honored to say that a popular fan page has listed and ran that story on the front page of their web site for sometime now. In a word, movies often are a reflection of the time they were shown, but they are also known for the lasting memories they provide. Let me be clear from the start, likely no movie has ever had a more lasting impact on me, and my past, in both a pleasant, and scary as hell way as has Night of the Living Dead. Some of the most wonderful and scary memories of a horrible youth are centered in part due to this movie. There is no doubt, not even close, I have seen no movie more in my life than Night of the Living Dead.

The story goes that George A. Romero and some of his friends in the Pittsburgh area had been working on various television commercials with a company they had. They decided to make a movie, and thus a significant contribution to the world of Independent Film was made with the contribution of Night of the Living Dead, still considered by many as one of the scariest movies of all time.

The story of Night of the Living Dead starts with a brother and sister going to visit the graves of their parents on their annual excursion. From the opening haunting scenes of the movie, the soundtrack starts to scare the viewer; it isn’t long into the movie that we start on a horror fest that has the dead coming to life and desiring to eat the flesh of the living. Much has been said on the contributions of this film, the scary nature of it, much of it folklore, some true, and other things not. From the very opening moments of the film, until the shocking conclusion, we are taken on a ride where Romero states, “It was a movie we made with the intent to scare people. I haven’t really tried to scare anyone in a movie since Night of the Living Dead.” If that was his intent, he succeeded with flying colors.

One of the issues related to the movie Night of the Living Dead is centered on the fact that there is no copyright that goes with the film as a result of the master being destroyed in a flood a number of years ago. As a result the residuals have been long gone, and the cheap replications have made for a horrible movie going experience. Thankfully we finally have a wonderful reprint of the movie and a quality set of special features on the DVD that makes this a worthwhile purchase. I currently have 4 various copies of this movie; this is without a doubt, the best visual and audio copy of the bunch. Not only are there the quality black and white version of the movie, the special features are among the best ever included with the film, in fact, I believe the special features alone; make the movie a worthwhile purchase.

Included in the special features are ample interviews with Romero and many of the cast. Historical aspects of the film are discussed and there is a wonderful tribute in various features to the lead actor of the film, Duane Jones, who plays the part of Ben. Many have spoken of the historical nature of the film, but Romero and others are quick to point out that Duane Jones was one of the primary reasons for the films success. Jones, in another special feature, in his last speech and discussion about the film prior to his death, also quickly points out that the editing process of the film is among the best ever made. Virtually none of the actors in the film ever thought this movie would amount to anything, but the exocentric nature of Romero, along with editing process provided a movie that still holds up in this era of special effects and CGI. While many would have had their zombie characters eating CGI or specially made intestines. Romero had his cast eating real intestines from a butchers shop. It looks gross and disgusting because it is.

Several aspects about Night of the Living Dead still stand out. First is the originality of the film. The Zombie Genera was established as a result of this movie. There is no doubt of the significant contribution to film because of Romero and those involved. There are other contributions that many may not be aware of. Few know for example that Jones was the first Black actor ever cast in the lead of a horror film and he was also the first black actor to garnish the lead in a role that was not specifically written for an African American. Jones who later on went on to become a college professor never saw another George Romero film, and neither did he watch Night of the Living Dead again after his first viewing. It was clear that Jones also realized the significance of his role, especially during the era it was written. It is remarkable to see George Romero state that he wishes he would have listened to Duane Jones in this area. If the social commentary and background that Jones had wanted in the film had been included, Night of the Living Dead would not only be quite possibly the greatest horror movie made, it would have been one of the most significant films ever made. Despite that though, many like myself would state, it is already among the greats, but to know it could have been even greater is a tremendous thing to think about.

In an age where we have remake, after remake, we have sequel upon sequel, it is nice to go back to the original. Night of the Living Dead is a film that many people look back at and compare many a contemporary horror film to. They do so because they realize the significance of this movie. Romero has continued to show his brilliance in the Zombie Genera, but it all started with Night of the Living Dead. In the past, we the fans unfortunately didn’t have a quality visual version to watch. Now stations are rerunning marathons with the new print, and we have a quality product that will open the eyes of many a new viewer. I can’t help but be pleased. I am so looking forward to my midnight showings, my late night gatherings and other times when I fall back to the original scare fest with Night of the Living Dead.

I normally don’t do the review thing on DVD’s like this one, but with the nice gift and contribution of this 40th Anniversary Edition, in memory of the late Duane Jones, and the memories and joy this movie has brought me over the years; on a scale of 1 – 10, a wonderful, well deserved 10.

Please note, read the reviews when purchasing this video online. There is a bootleg, very poor edition of this film being sold on Amazon. Don’t support that type of garbage; get the restored version endorsed by George Romero as it appears in this article.

The following is a wonderful bit from Bravo. Just click on the video, if the video don't appear, just click on the following link: Watch enjoy, and make sure to leave the lights on.
