Ah, the power of compound interest...

Einstein called it mankind's most ingenious invention.  The funny thing is though... this phenomenon doesn't limit itself to just money.

It also works with any self-help type scenario as well.

Think about this for a second... doing one small thing everyday to better yourself is much better than doing one BIG thing once per month.

Truth

Also, have you ever experienced compound interest in reverse?

That's what happens when you let negative people in your life... they suck you dry without you even knowing it.

What are your experiences...

Okay, so it's Labor Day and I'm still hard at work...

(I told you I was a workaholic)

Anyway, I'm not going to post on this blog that much.  If you want to see my daily contribution to life, go to the Mind Over Body Matter Letter.

It's free and has cartoons, videos, articles and motivational quotes to help get you going in the right direction.

So, we've seen a little how the "after burn" effect comes around and if you read the last MOBM letter then you get a little about how EPOC effects the metabolism.

Unless you are raising your metabolism, you are wasting your time trying to lose weight.  Do I need to repeat that?

Most people try to starve themselves, even though they know that it's not the right way to do things.  Do they see results?

Look, any moron can lose water weight.  Now fat loss - that's the ticket.

Get your interval training going and watch the fat start peeling off.

More on the energy flux principle tomorrow.

Instead of posting today, I figured I'd put the link to the new MOBM letter here.  It's about Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption and it applies to weight loss like you wouldn't believe.

Go here to check it out.

Okay, so we were talking about the "After Burn" effect and how it can effect your fat loss...

Pure and simple, here's how interval training really helps.  There was a study done not too long ago that compared two different groups of people:  an "aerobic" group and an "anaerobic" (High Intensity Interval Training) group.

You can see for yourself the results here:

Trembblay A, Simoneau JA, Bouchard C. (1994). Impact of Exercise Intensity on Body Fatness and Skeletal Muscle Metabolism. 43(7): 814-818.
Do a Google Search with the terms: interval training studies fat loss

Needless to say, the anaerobic group lost more fat than the aerobic group even though the anaerobic group burned LESS calories overall.

Hmmm...

I told you this energy flux phenomena was pretty cool.

So, we are going to jump ship a little bit and talk about another related subject:

The "After Burn" Effect

If you could perform certain exercises or do certain things and guaranteed that you'd continue to burn calories at a high level up to 4 hours after you've worked out, would you do them?

Of course you would...

The exercises I am talking about are both weight training and interval training.   Interval training is very intriguing and we'll discuss it first.

At it's purest level, interval training basically means going fast for a small period of time... then slow for a period of time... fast... slow.

I'll talk about why tomorrow but I will leave you with this... interval training is one of the most effective fat burning activities you can do.

Okay, so today I'm going to drop a little hint (okay... a big hint) on what I was talking about yesterday.

When we talk over which macronutrients we are consuming, we are talking about fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.  Here is an example of how eating less of one type of macronutrient can change your body composition.

Let's say you decide to go on a "low carb" diet (because, of course, everyone says that it's the best way to lose weight).  Well, the glycogen in your muscles, (that comes from the carbs you eat) pull 2.4oz of water into your cells for every gram of glycogen present.  Therefore, when you restrict your carbs, you lose weight... water weight.

Now, of course, there are a few other mechanisms in place when you decide that you want to manipulate carbs (like not violating Rule #1 in the last post).  And... I'll talk about them in a later post.

Just don't go into a carb depletion mode until I tell you to

Now, that's not to say that carb depletion doesn't work well for short term fat loss... no not at all...

I'll tell you what... since I've thrown out a big of a curve ball... let me jump topics and talk about the "after burn" effect and how you can power your way through your fat loss... with a few simple tweaks to you workout.

Don't worry, I'll tie it all back together later on.
