Last week I got an email informing me that I was nominated & selected to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy Taster in Atlanta next week. For those that aren't familar with the Academy, click here: Red Bull Music Academy - What is the Academy?

The Taster is basically a mini version of the world traveling RBMA that's held yearly, where you get to network with & share creativity with fellow music lovers & music professionals. This session we will have workshops & studio sessions with The Mizell BrothersMaestroBryan-Michael CoxBrandon Thomas, and Joi. And will be on site at Doppler Studios The School of Audio Engineering (SAE). This will all lead to a collaborative effort to create an original Red Bull Music Academy production.

Needless to say, I'm honored & kinda excited

If any of you are in the ATL area Tuesday 6/2, RBMA is kicking things off with "A Tribute to The Mizell Brothers / The Return of the Tuesday Jam Session" @ The Loft. Come through & say wassup

Frankie Bones (Clarksville) 08 08 2009

Biography:

Frankie Bones, often termed the "Godfather" of the rave scene, has spent more than two-thirds of his life devoted to electronic music. He got a start earlier than most; at only eleven years of age Bones had what he deems his first true experience in ‘clubbing.’ Every Saturday from that fateful day in May 1978 until 1982, Bones went to Roll-A-Palace, a rollerskating rink in Brooklyn with a dancefloor and "forward thinking" DJs, as he puts it. "There he learned the basic concepts of how to format music from being a regular patron on a weekly basis."

By the summer of 1979, at the age of twelve, Bones had already wired two turntables to the same stereo to enable him to start the next record while the one playing faded out. "My father found a box called a 1-4 Audio splitter which was a mixer with four slides marked Audio 1-4 and that was it. The art of mixing came by accident when I took two 45s of "Good Times" and extended the chorus. My BSR turntables had no pitch control so matching the beat of the same song was easy."

His legendary STORMraves in Brooklyn in the ‘90s have earned him the reputation as a pioneer of rave culture. "Frankie Bones introduced raves…to the east coast by throwing a series of big underground parties.

They were known as the STORMraves. Many promoters give Bones credit as the founding father of raves in America. It was at one of these Storm Raves that Bones gave a very important speech after one of his very powerful sets. He explained what the scene was about and why he had brought it to NY: peace, love, unity, and respect. When he finished everybody in the warehouse waved their hands in the air in complete unity. For many it was the most beautiful speech anyone has ever heard," says one attendee. From Prodigy to LTJ Bukem to Carl Cox, some of the best talent to emerge in the global scene has attributed Bones as an inspiration.

Playing cutting edge music without gimmicks or limitations, Bones does not follow trends or try to create them. "I do not go for a look or a style," he says. "Fashion goes in and out of style; passion and dedication never go out of style. I cannot scratch like DJ Craze, cut like Bad Boy Bill, have major backing like Paul Oakenfold or rap like Run DMC, yet every time I start where they finish the crowd response equals or surpasses… How? Why? It is quite simple: "I love what I do and I have loved what I have been doing."

Ultimo & Disco presents….

DAVE DRESDEN
www.myspace.com/davedresden

Multiplicity can be a curse or a godsend. In the case of Dave Dresden, the constant jump between DJ and Producer, Journalist and A&R man became a blessing. At a very young age, Dresden developed his passion for music growing up in Connecticut. He frequented local dance clubs and became friendly with a DJ named Moby, a local hero at the time, who would later also serve as his mentor. His popularity grew quickly and demand for Dresden’s sets led to multiple performances weekly. But Dresden knew he wanted more than to be behind the decks.

When opportunity knocked in 1996, Dresden changed his focus to radio. He began his highly rated show "Electro Circus", which aired on Hartford, Connecticut's modern rock station, WMRQ until 2000. His radio career continued as music director and on-air personality for Groove Radio, an internet radio station, and music supervision for Pete Tong's highly influential Essential Selection show on the BBC Radio 1.

Always seeking new endeavors, Dresden became a dance music journalist and began writing reviews and features for national magazines such as DMA, DJ Times, and Mixer. Dresden was named a reporter to the highly regarded Billboard Club Play chart. Dresden profiled Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Masters at Work, Puff Daddy, Sasha & Digweed, BT, The Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, and Deep Dish, to name a few. Many of these artists’ first American press came through his journalistic efforts.

In 2001, everything changed when Dave Dresden partnered with Josh Gabriel to form the internationally successful DJ/production duo, Gabriel & Dresden. Soon after the group formed, they gained recognition through their numerous remixes for dance tracks such as Tiesto's "In My Memory" Way Out West's "Mindcircus" and Above and Beyond's "No One On Earth", as well as pop titles such as "Don't Leave Home" by Dido and "Intuition" and "Serve the Ego" by Jewel. Their first single, "Lament", was released in 2002 on Satoshi Tommie's Saw Recordings, received much critical acclaim. Since then they have released 3 full compilation albums and, in 2006, their self titled debut studio album, which was named as the "2006 Album of the Year" by M8 magazine.

Dresden's contribution to the duo led to 18 #1 positioned singles and remixes (and two others with both Chris Cox and Attention Deficit) on Billboard's Club Play Chart. The worldwide smash hit which Dresden released with Josh and vocalist Jes under the alias Motorcycle, "As the Rush Comes", hit the #1 spot on the US's Dance Radio Airplay chart for the year 2004 and peaked at #11 in the UK national singles chart. As DJs, the two reached #20 on the prestigious DJ Magazine Poll for 2006 and, more recently, Gabriel and Dresden won Best American DJ in 2007 and 2008 at the Annual Winter Music Conference International Dance Music Awards. After the awards, in March 2008, Gabriel & Dresden decided to part ways.

Dresden's solo career continues to accelerate with the same drive, determination that he began his career. His various successes have allowed him to remix artists such as The Killers, Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan, Duncan Sheik, Britney Spears & Madonna, Paul Oakenfold, and many more. His new single "Whole Wide World " which he co-produced with Chris Cox is currently being played on Tong's Essential Selection, and his newest remix of Radiohead's "Nude" can be heard on Dresden’s Myspace.

With Dresden's extensive touring schedule, as well as several solo releases and remixes, there is no doubt that Dresden's star power is shining brighter than ever before.

So...I just completed my 50th Bikram (hot) yoga class tonight @ Hot Yoga Nashville.  I can't believe that it was just over 4 months ago that I walked into the Hot Yoga Nashville studio out of curiosity...& desperation. I had just about hit bottom & was suffering on all fronts: physically, emotionally, mentally, & spiritually. I was your typical American...running myself into the ground, giving in to constant distractions & was a classic corporate burnout...who had lost Self along the way.

So...glad to say that I'm making progress & moving forward. I still have lots to learn & explore, but @ least I've started the journey.  And so far, I'm pleased with the results:

¤ I'm 20 lbs lighter...whew! LOL
¤ I've stopped taking/using all meds for allergies, asthma, sleep, digestion,  eczema, etc.
¤ Eating habits are improving...slow change, but getting there. And my water intake as definitely improved.
¤ Sleep is regulating.
¤ Complexion & posture has improved.
¤ Less stressed, improved disposition & mood....learning to slow down a bit.

So, needless to say....I'm going to stick with it, I haven't been this pleased with a fitness routine in years (& I'm a former athlete).

I'll keep everyone updated, & feel free to ask me questions.  I'll do another post about another fun topic: acupuncture LOL

I send much love & gratitude to Cassie & the crew @ HYN

Hey everyone!  Well...I'm in the midst of celebrating my birthday week.  This Friday (May 23rd) I'll be happy to say that I've gotten to see another year.  And some of you know that when I turned 30, I had decided to do something fun & different every year to celebrate my birthday.  I've thrown a party & was the 1st to bring DJ Jamad to Nashville...relaxed in Nassau, Bahamas...had Lasik eye surgery...& bought DJ gear to name a few.  So I have to say...I think I do treat mysef well from time to time

Well...this year I'm flipping the script a bit..& doing both something fun & something healthy:

    Hot Yoga Nashville

¤  Earlier this month, I finally gave in to my curiousity & need to get my health under control.  So I decided to try out hot (Bikram) yoga...and all I got to say is that it's definitely no joke.  Being a former athlete, I can say that I've never had a workout like this.  Probably because it thoroughly works the full body & isn't as stressful on the body. And the heat does help with relaxing the muscles & of course get you that lovely sweat so many of us shoot for.   Besides the health benefits, it's teaching me patience & concentration. I've enjoyed it so much that I've signed up for a year of classes...so will be reporting back on my progress as a new yogi soon.

¤  So you know that I play hard when I do...& 1st off, I will be playing host for The Red Sessions @ The Place tonight (May 22nd)...covering for Devine...I'm not spinning...but I get to act like I'm runnin' things for a night

Also, peep the article from the City Paper earlier this week:

The Music Biz: Jump-starting dance music here gets some Devine intervention

¤  Then it's off to Atlanta....and here's the game plan for Saturday:

(1) The Atlanta Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 24th...making sure to catch Heather Johnson's performance (one of the vocalists for Ananda Project)

(2) Next will swing by U*Space Gallery for ArtLab to check out The Wayne Fishell Experiment.  Also doing so because I'm slated to do an "experiment" there some time this summer...so stay tuned for more on that

(3) And lastly on Saturday...I get to experience Soul Funktion finally...so get to hang with DJ Offbeat & Mike Zarin...& see what this Boddhi Satva guy's all about   And for those in the Memphis area...be on the look out for Soul Funktion Memphis on June 28th...more info to follow

Whew...& it's not over

¤  Sunday I'll be spinning with J-Finesse during an in store DJ set @ one of my favorite music shops, Moods Music in Little Five Points (1131 Euclid, 30307).  Darryl's going to let us spin a few tunes from 2ish to 7ish...& I think it's fitting for me to spin in ATL for the 1st time in a store that has significantly shaped my listening habits over the years.  So...you want to know where I shop...come on out & hang for a bit.  And oh yeah...just got word today that J Rawls will be in town & he'll be stopping through around 3 pm.  So should be a wonderful afternoon of music & good vibes

¤ And to wrap it up on Monday, will be back in Nashville to spin @ Mama's House @ Mad Donna's in East Nashville (1313 Woodland St., 37206).  So will join Mama Jude, Jane Dupree, & Sam-Me for a night of house music, from 10 pm until close. Ah yeah...   Definitely check out this new restaurant & bar.

So...think that's it...if anything catches your attention, definitely check it out...& if you need furthery info, please let me know.

Well, time for me to rest...I've got a lot ahead of me in the coming days.  Hope to see some of you out & about.

Until next time...y'all be easy...
