It's Thanksgiving week. Have you ever thought about the turkey?
It's an awkwardly constructed thing, a bird too big to fly much, a double chin that people call a "beard," a long neck at the end of which is a head way too small for its body. It shares its foot style with and has feathers like a chicken, but it sort of gobbles instead of clucking. It likes to travel in a family or a gang or something.
It's downfall is that because of all this, it's pretty defenseless. Even the Pilgrims, not known as a particularly ruthless bunch, could kill one easily with a big old kind of blunderbuss that scattered whatever was poured down it all over the place.
Worst of all for the poor thing, it's delicious AND low fat!

What does this rant have to do with the Friday Friggin' Fling? Well...I read this book once that was titled "Don't Let The Turkeys Get You Down." Turkey Day reminded me about that symbolism of the comparison of the turkey with goofy, misguided people. Lady Seda's Monday challenge this week was to write in metaphors. "Don't let The Turkeys Get You Down" might be considered an excellent metaphorical statement.
So...since the Fling likes to be contemporary and go with the flow of life, I thought this week we would try writing about turkeys you have known. Could be in poem form, could be a short short story.
If a poem, it could be any format or no format, your choice. If you want to use a set format, I could recommend the Clerihew, which are usually about people. The Clerihew, according to ShadowPoetry.com, is
a comic verse consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme, aabb invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) at the age of 16. The poem is about/deals with a person/character within the first rhyme. In most cases, the first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person.
One of the most remembered Clerihew from Bentley's collection is:
Sir Humphrey Davy Abominated gravy. He lived in the odium Of having discovered sodium.
Here's a couple of more recent Clerihews:
Garfield the cat On his rear he sat. Eating lasagna galore All about the decor.

The Road Runner always almost a goner; when attacked in manner dread, Wile E. suffers intended fate instead ....

The Clerihew format is just a suggestion. The important thing is to take advantage of this unique opportunity to vent about one or more of the turkeys in your life. Perhaps ponder when one of your friends turned into a turkey and got you down - what would you like to say to them? Or describe qualities or behaviors that you find silly, dangerous, obnoxious or in some other way turkeylike.
This week the Friday Fling goes Turk and feasts on Fowl Balls!
"Mamma says, if you can't say somethin' nice about somebody, don't say nothin' at all." - Thumper, in Bambi. This week, to that we say: pffft!
Be sure to comment consonently on your fellow Pals perorations. And then fly out to a decidedly unfoul well-done weekend!
Here are the Fickle Finger of Fate Awards for October 9, 16, 23 and 30. Yes I finally am getting caught up!

Much Love,
Lady Cheryl

Dream Dancer
In my restlessness I daydreamed Walking into a dark deserted corridor A showdow of my lost self Looked down on me And mocked my movements While-- Breathing every thought I had I came upon a giant clock I pulled myself up to the base And peered over the edge There on an opal floor I lay Cool and reflective of my soul The shiny surface gave me calm The iron hands came towards me Welcoming me a place to sit Perched and statuesque I stayed Feeling much lighter than air Floating slowy and softly Balancing -- I rose Now I could measure my existence Minutes beneath my body Gave me the most needed time spent With every tick I felt a jerk Getting closer to the final hour I did not have need of steps These hands would carry me Tick By Tock
Minute By Minute
I danced on the hands of time My shadow lingered on the opalescent field Now I was nearing the last of the journey Going Up Ward to the 12 th number Shiney and golden A tresure the colour of Heaven Each hourly symbol before Had created a comfort zone This escape I chose Would conclude my sleepless dance Floating On Time A gift much sweeter than a night of dreams So calming to be carried by strong hands This floatation gave a reason to be aware Of enjoying the compatability of time well spent Especially when sleep betrayed me The minutes becoming my friends I no longer despised this insomnia My shadow joining me We smiled And climbed down into daylight "Tomorrows" would come again

Hello poets, artisans, and pals. Welcome to another Magic Monday here at the CPCCC. So much going on this time of year it is hard to stop and catch a breath sometimes… but here we can take a moment to reflect, be inspired, and create. I look forward to our time together today as we dip into something a bit different….
METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING
Have you heard that FRUIT… is GOD’s CANDY???? And if it is FORBIDDEN, it is tempting beyond belief???
Have you heard that METAMORPHISIS Implies change within… even though the butterfly changes its outer skin?
We all recall that ACHILLES HEEL was not exclusively describing his body part…
We all use this in our creative mind… flipping words off the tongue when we speak and not realizing we are doing it. Today I would like us to focus on the METAPHOR.
Stretch your mind and pick anything you wish to describe. As you write about the action, the topic, the scene… discover the correlation to other things.
Below are some links that may be useful if you find yourself struggling to find a subject today, but I hope you will give this topic a try. Think of it as an exercise in description and let your imagination take over. When you open your imagination you will find this quite easy to do… I promise.
Thank you for taking some time to play today. Please remember to share your encouragement by leaving comments for your fellow poets and clicking the ever important kudos. I would also like to invite you back near the end of the day for a surprise assignment for next week. I will post it Later in the day. I hope you find something to capture your imagination. Now dip into your ink, tickle your imagination and let’s make some MAGIC!!!
Blessings everyone ~Lady Seda~ http://grammar.about.com/od/mo/g/metaphorterm.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor#Common_types http://www.saidwhat.co.uk/spoon/metaphors.php
