MOOSSA with Stump Hole Water at Highwater Restaurant at Toad’s Place Sat Jan 24

MOOSSA brings its eclectic roots rock mix back to the Richmond area on Sat Jan 24 with a 9pm show at Highwater at Toad’s Place. The 6 piece group features strong song driven rock laced with reggae, funk and blues. A mainstay in the Richmond area over the last 7 years, the band is known for great live performances as well as a catalog of 4 CDs recorded locally at Sound of Music and Minimum Wage Studios.  Moossa’s most recent release “Route 17” is a “…new  A+ album that’s got all the elements to get your smoky jazz club party into a funky dance fix, then turn it back around into a mellow jam infused with some reggae overtones…stylistically breaking the boundaries of what you may hear from your traditional rock album.”
Kicking things off is Stump Hole Water featuring the dark folk down to earth acoustic blues of Mr. Clark Lovelady .  "Stump Hole Water channels vintage Americana with great instrumentation and spirited vocals. Swapping instruments and vocal duties, the brothers Lovelady and Mr. Andy Malik weave an entertaining blend of lively tunes that evoke props to many styles and genres, but remains refreshingly original and new. The songs never take back seat, as Stump Hole Water sells each one with such enthusiasm and celebration. In an age of labels and carefully prepared descriptions, it's a pleasure to"not" be able to pidgeon-hole this band of young talent, paying homage to musical inspirations of days gone by."

Get the New Moossa CD ROUTE 17 at Plan 9 or online at cdbaby.com. Catch the band and opener Stump Hole Water Sat Jan 24 at Highwater at Toad’s Place. 9pm. 140 Virginia St.  RVA NO Cover!

FOODSTOCK a benefit for hunger relief in Haiti will be held at Toad's Place on Sunday August 17th from 4-9pm. Music will be provided by Sin Sity, The Big Guys, Moossa and Throwin Knivez and on the deck acoustic sounds featuring Bill Hill.
After a trip to Haiti in April, where he witnessed first hand the miserable plight of malnourished Haitian children Commercial Taphouse owner James Talley organized the Haitian Hunger Project with a goal to provide a minimum of 5 meals a week to over 600 students at the Union Chretienne des Haitiens School.
Revenue from FOODSTOCK will go towards not only the meals themselves but to construction of a secure facility from which to serve them. "Feed the Poor" has promised more regular food shipments if a storage building is protected by a hurricane roof and the windows are secured with bars enabling it to serve as warehouse, cafeteria, kitchen and clinic plus they need to keep the pumps for the wells under lock and key so they don't get stolen. Yeah that's right this place is so rough they've got to put bars on the windows to protect the kids' food! These children are the hope for Haiti in the coming generations.
PLEASE COME TO TOAD"s PLACE OR MAKE A DONATION

RISE UP RISE UP

Rise Up, rise up, all you fighters rise up, fighters for the peace man
Wise up, wise up, all you people wise up and take it to the streets and
Deliver them a message loud and strong we have stood too silent for way too long
Rise up, wise up, people and peace fighters rise up

Take control of your life, live it but don't leave it, the thinking that is
To those who would upheave it, the rock of the one love people
Brother you better believe it, stands strong now
In the middle of the night I wake up crying so many tears for so many dying
But away from our task we will not be shying because we stand strong now

Rise Up, rise up, all you fighters rise up, fighters for the peace man
Wise up, wise up, all you people wise up and take it to the streets and
Deliver them a message loud and strong we have stood too silent for way too long
Rise up, wise up people and peace fighters rise up

Turmoil over oil tell me true if I am a tax payer
Am I a murderer too? Uncle Sam used to stand for something but its now we who stand strong now
So don't wake up in the night with eyes wet from crying do you what you can do to keep the man from prying and depriving many people of their life and their rights
Stand stong now

Rise Up, rise up, all you fighters rise up, fighters for the peace man
Wise up, wise up, all you people wise up and take it to the streets and
Deliver them a message loud and strong we have stood too silent for way too long
Rise up, wise up, people and peace fighters rise up
Rise up, wise up, people and peace fighters rise up

This was truly a euphoric experience for everyone in the band as well as our friends who shared the night with us in the audience. I was thinking that 38 was a lot of songs to have played and then I realized that we took a 15 or 20 minute break after the first set and when we returned at 10:30pm we played without break until 1:05am New Year's Day. Some of the covers were whipped out impromptu and completely unrehearsed but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could tell the difference. There is a lot of powerful emotions being poured into the tunes. Nancy not only delivers diva type lead vocals but gives strong anchor to the band's 3 and 4 part vocal lines. Harmonies increasingly cross the line into "I am getting chills" territory. I'd put Jim and Trey up against any other guitar slinging duo around but when it comes to finshing the night strong those two would be the ones left standing.Ryan and Scott drove the bus all night long locking up like never before. HI all MOOSSA friends.
Wanted you to know about the following awareness drive as it effects both my sister and her daughter. Peace John MOOSSA

Dear Friends and Family ..

Hope this finds all of you doing well!

As many of you know, I have been doing a bit more running than usual this summer. What most of you don..t know is that the ..extra miles.. have been part of a six month marathon training program. On November 11th, I will be running the Richmond Marathon with hopes of raising awareness for Leigh..s disease, a mitochondrial disorder affecting one in 77,000 births worldwide. Mitochondrial disease results from failures of ..specialized.. compartments in cells in our body. When these compartments fail, less energy is produced and major organ systems become compromised. The disease primarily affects children, but adult onset is becoming more common.

Mitochondrial disease occurs in 1 out of every 2000 births. And while it affects each person differently, there is very little treatment .. and no cure.

Whether you know it or not, many of us have been touched by mitochondrial disease not once, but twice. Our cousin, Emmy Jurek was diagnosed with Leigh..s disease when she was just a toddler. Emmy is now 11 years old and has already surpassed her life expectancy. In recent years, Mary Moossa Jurek (Emma..s mother) has been diagnosed with an adult onset of a nonspecific mitochondrial disease. Mary..s condition, similar to Emma..s, results in muscle weakness, pain, gastro-intestinal disorders and swallowing difficulties. Prognosis is poor in both cases.

My goal is simple folks. I want to raise money and awareness for a group of diseases that I believe are grossly under funded, poorly understood and virtually overlooked when compared to others. We are a large family with an extended group of friends, coworkers and associates. We have connections to hospitals, schools, insurance companies and law firms. I believe we have potential to educate many people regarding not only Leigh..s disease but mitochondrial disease in general.

I ask that you go to Emmy to learn more about research that is being done to help diagnose, treat and hopefully someday cure mitochondrial disease. Please consider making a pledge in any dollar amount you wish. 100% of your donation will go to research to find a cure.

Although I don..t see them often, Emma and Mary constantly remind me of what life is really about. I am proud and honored to be running on their behalf.

Thank you in advance for your support.

With love and gratitude,
Monica Erin

With their impressive second studio album, "Step Right Up," Richmond's Moossa continues to break down musical barriers. The 16-track disc takes the listener on a journey through several fin de siecle musical genres, including funk, ska, reggae and roots-rock. What for most bands would constitute over-reaching, Moossa manages to weld all these styles together into a rich, vibrant musical fabric. And some of their songs give the listener an idea of what the Red Hot Chili Peppers would sound like if they were from Virginia - and better songwriters. Richmond.com

Moossa - Step Right Up
504 North

The second CD from Richmond band Moossa finds the jam/reggae rock foursome with plenty of juice in the songwriting tank. Moossa delivers a one-two punch with the toe tapping rocker ..Slack Like Me.. and the sunsplashed laid back reggae of ..Little Bit Lighter... ..Tollbooth.. toys with back alley funk, ..It..s True.. has a subtle punk soul, and ..Rambling Oklahoma Blues.. is grittier then a July evening in Tulsa. Brimming with wicked guitar licks, soulful vocals and thoughtful lyrics, Moossa once again delivers a disc that is entertaining and musically intriguing .. Music Morsels Mark Waterbury

Moossa ..Step Right Up.. (504 North Records)

Goes well with front-porch keg parties and Jeep Wranglers.

Front man John Moossa..s eponymous four-piece moves casually between genres on its second release. It..s a talent these roots-rockers honed while paying their dues, playing covers in clubs and on college campuses. Though the band is still maturing toward its own signature sound, ..Step Right Up.. is more than a chaotic hodgepodge, thanks to credible musicianship and competent production at Lance Koehler..s Minimum Wage Recording in Oregon Hill. Of these 16 tracks, all are originals, save Bob Marley..s ..Rebel Music,.. although the lighthearted ..Little Bit Higher.. also sways to a reggae beat. ..Rock Down Steady.. might be a Southern rock anthem but for the harmonica, while the vocal harmonies of ..Dream.. evoke the Eagles despite the song..s psychedelic lyrics. As the album progresses, driving guitars .. electric and acoustic .. stitch together pop-punk, honky-tonk and gritty R&B. The frat folk of ..Stephanie Seemed Like a Good Idea.. has John Moossa playing the serious songwriter, but he and fellow songwriter bassist Ryan Davis are clearly more at home in a bar than a coffee shop; and a relentless touring schedule will keep them in bars around town all summer. *** .. MOOSSA STEP RIGHT UP (504 North Music)
This Richmond-based quartet..s latest is more of the stylistically varied, well-played and well-written tunes we..ve come to expect from the band. Tight and good natured in vibe, these guys cover a lot of ground in this 16-track recording. There..s an eye for the serious and sober here as well as a party vibe that lightens the load throughout.

Songwriting duties are mostly handled by singer-acoustic guitarist John Moossa and bass player Ryan Davis and, except for a couple of quibbles what come through to these ears, UP goes down oh, so, smoothly. ..Slack Like Me.. is that light-hearted tune about the lives most of us have lived or, for that matter, are still living. It gets things off in fine fashion. ..Little Bit Higher.. is a stroll though self-examination that includes the nifty lines ..I..ve tried my hand at justice and I..ve tried my hand at sin/but the only shoes I..ve walked in are the ones I..m still in... The Robin Hood/hipster ..11 & 5/8.. looks wordy and dangerous on paper but the vocal arrangement works really well and it..s one of my favorites. Jim Fabricatore..s effective slide highlights the Beatlesque ..Dreams.. while ..Shut Down.. takes a determined stance to rise above the ho-hum. ..Stephanie Seemed Like a Good Idea.. is a wistful little tune that boasts some truly out-of-the-blue rhymes as well as notions of that ..bad need for bad women...

But possibly my favorite tune is John Moossa..s solo acoustic set closer ..Mistake of Chance.. which he sings in his best ..70s Dylan voice. That..s not a knock on the band as a whole. It..s just that this song rings with such a thoughtful resolution to despair and delusion that it..s a winning and fitting song to wrap with. Overall, these guys can rock, they can triple it up or slow it down with the groove heavy drumming of Scott Lewis or they can catch your ear with a serious and well-crafted lyric. But lest we get too serious here, it..s clear these guys are having a great time making good time, positive music that deserves its niche. Check it out and bring your dancing shoes. -Ames Arnold 9 x Magazine
