Important!
This blog is intended primarily for buyers of Neonbeam Magazine, however it is strongly recommended that ANYONE who uses Lulu reads this.
It has come to my attention, from two different contributors of NB7, that print copies of the issue they bought from Lulu.com had the pages ordered incorrectly. I have checked all "print-ready" documents that were uploaded to Lulu (and the PDF edition which is taken directly from the print version) and the pages were (and are) in the correct order prior to publication. Therefore, this is Lulu's printing error - I assume they printed a batch and binded them incorrectly, as the copy I received was accurate.
The first contributor to contact me with this problem also contacted Lulu Support, who are sending another copy to her, free of charge. For anyone else who has experienced this issue with print copies, in the first instance please also contact Lulu (they will need your order number). If Lulu won't send replacement copies, or you have any further problems after contacting them, please let me know and I'll do what I can (email: sammi@neonbeam.org).
I'm extremely sorry about this inconvenience. I am furious with Lulu for this error, especially since their prices have recently increased, and no longer intend to use them to publish Neonbeam. I am not yet sure of an alternative, or whether the magazine will have to be suspended, but I would suggest to anyone who uses Lulu to publish material to be VERY wary of their seemingly decreasing service standards!
Apologies again, and do please get in touch if you have had this problem and Lulu have failed to rectify it.

If there are any artists out there who can produce or provide something very colourful and vibrant for the cover of Neonbeam 6, I would love to hear from you. E-Mail me at sammi@neonbeam.org. The dimensions of the cover are about 9x9 inches, but, like the cover of Issue 5, we can accomodate other sizes too. All images need to be at least 300 pixels per inch.
If there are no responses, I will happily move on to plan B!

Neonbeam Issue Five is now available to download at the website as a free PDF. It will also be released as a print magazine later in the week - I am just waiting to receive the proof copy before I make it public.
Issue Five features fiction and poetry by Gregory L. Hall, George O'Gorman, Richard James, Pablo Vision, Paul Weinberg, Sam Leng, Peter A. Balaskas, William de Rham, Felino Soriano, Rob Plath, Robert S. King, William Doreski, Colin James, David McLean, Aaron A. Polson, Bruce Harris, Darryl Salach and Alan King. Plus, there are interviews with Jeremy C. Shipp and David McLean. The cover art is by Scott Springer.
Submission guidelines for Issue Six are now available at the website and on the NB MySpace page. A few changes to the submission process: NB no longer accepts simultaneous submissions and the word count for fiction has now increased to 5000. This is because NB will no longer serialise stories.
Enjoy the issue! I will post another blog when the print edition is available.

The following blog is for information, and a point of reference for the website announcement. It is not a huge change, but a change nonetheless...
As of March 2008, future issues of Neonbeam will not offer a "Best of Issue" prize. This is due to the following reasons:
1 - It is becoming progressively more difficult for me to choose my favourite story and poem from the accepted submissions, which are all of excellent quality. I fret about making the other contributions seem inferior, and that has never been my intention. Probably this is unjustified paranoia on my part, but still, picking Best of Issues are not decisions I particularly enjoy making anymore.
2 - The books I'm choosing for the prizes are not guaranteed to be to everyone's taste. For example, if I selected a hardcore splatterpunk story as my favourite, and then sent the author a prize book about fairies, it may spend its life gathering dust on a shelf. On the other hand, it may not. Again, I have become increasingly fearful of this, probably unnecessarily.
And 3 - Cost. Sadly, this does play a part in the decision. I'm not making any money from NB (in fact, I'm spending more than I intended), and the cost of purchasing prize books and paying for internal and cross-country postage does add up. Besides, I will soon be living in my very own flat, and will be lucky if I can afford to eat, let alone buy people prizes! Sorry!
So, apologies, but I'm afraid, as of now, we are 100% non-paying. There may be times when I set a competition of some sort, but that will be sporadic, rather than the norm. Issue Four's prizes have been sent out already, so this change applies to Issue Five and beyond.
And since I mentioned Issue Four, everything is on track for it to be released as a free PDF and a print magazine on March 15; this Saturday! I have been remarkably organised this time around. It looks set to be a fine issue!
