Despite claims, Nigel is one of Valley's best power pop bandsBy Chris Hansen Orf, Get Out

With rock n roll being a playground for hyperbole and blustering braggadocio, it's refreshing to find a band with a sense of modesty. The headline on Valley pop/rock group Nigel's www.myspace.com/nigelmusic Web site states that the band is Probably the 8th best band in Arizona.
We have a pretty self-deprecating sense of humor, but we also think we're pretty good, explains singer/guitarist Patrick Sullivan. I think that anyone could name seven bands from Arizona that are better than us. But I'll bet they'd be hard-pressed to find more than that.
Bassist/vocalist Pete Blato De Souza is more succinct: I'm not into the whole low self-esteem thing I think were the best band in Arizona. Nigel will challenge any band to a Rock Off!
Joking aside, Nigel is certainly better than eighth on a list of Arizona's best bands a new self-titled EP contains six tunes brimming with catchy hooks and tight vocal harmonies surrounded by a booming rhythm section and heavy guitars and the group's songs (recorded and produced by Jamie Woolford of Valley alt-pop fave Let Go) are radio ready.
Together for just more than two years (We met at a Tupperware party, like all rock bands do, Patrick says), Nigel which also includes drummer Brad Mahoney and guitarist/singer Sean Gross took its name from Spinal Tap's rock guitar hero Nigel Tufnel.
I'd like to point out that we have armadillos in our trousers and our amps go to 11, says De Souza, referencing the film, and it's only appropriate as Spinal Tap was another band with not only the ability to rawk, but also a wicked sense of humor.
Nigel recorded its debut, Songs About Things, in 2004, but is more pleased with the new disc.
The new release is way better, mostly because I actually play on this one, laughs Gross, who wasn't with the band for the debut effort. Seriously, the presentation is so much better and we have come out of this a much better band.
And they have lofty goals.
How about being the seventh-best band in Arizona? says Sullivan.
I think we could even get back to being the sixth-best band, says Gross. If we tried really, really hard.
