My, oh my. Where did the year go? Last year around this time, I was preparing for a wedding, or a shower, or an annual report for work. Well, I did go to that shower, married Mr. Bainbridge, went to Hollywood, Mexico, Orlando, Chicago, received a promotion, bought a house, and enjoyed the holidays with the folks. In the meantime, four of my friends are pregnant and I will begin a new trend. Gone are the days I will average 5 weddings a year, now I reached the age for baby season.
But I digress, the Golden Globes are here once again to kick off the movie award season and I forgot to go to the movies this year. I did watch plenty of television to last many lifetimes thanks to our good ole DVR. Movies are my favorite pastime besides fashion and I feel that I have betrayed such a genre this year. Is it the economy or have I found ways to avoid spending money? (Please note that I saw signs of the impending economy back in July.See blog. It just took Congress a few more months to admit it. Jerks!)
I'm curious how 2009 will fare during the recession. This Christmas my lovely mother bought me two books: a biography on Judy Garland and autobiography by Katherine Hepburn. I've been facinated with old Hollywood, all of my life, and to see the similarities of the movie business then and now are interesting. I was reading a chapter of, Get Happy, and it was referring to the economy and ticket sales. MGM was preparing for a sales slump due to the war. So they were looking for movies that might bring the audience to a happier time and place.
So my predictions to bring people out to the movies more often this year and forget about this miserable economy are comedy, fantasy, and feel good movies. Lately, movies like the Bucket List with big name stars are not going to cut it. BTW: I started but couldn't finish this movie this weekend. I was over it an hour into the movie. And here's a movie enthusiast telling you that Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson better make some comedies!

In my humble, humble beginnings, I used to work as a morning manager at a local fast food join here in Pittsburg in the three years I took a hiatus from college. The smell of breakfast always reminds me of those times. I did meet my best friend, Emily, whom I love and cherish as much as I love and cherish the mocha coffee beverages we used to make together.  I learned about customer service and I was competitive about the morning sales. I saw a correlation between customer service and sales. It was simple. Making people feel welcomed and valued when they walked through those doors will create repeat customers. I worked those mornings for so long that I would know what those repeat customer would order before they stepped foot out of their cars. Even though it has been close to 10 years since I worked at that joint, I still see those old customers every now and think "biscuit and coffee" or "pancakes with strawberries no whip cream." I can't help it, but those little things stick in my brain.

One such customer, I remember, would come in with his wife or by himself, or meet up with some buds of his. We always talked every time he came in the place. He didn't come as often as other customers, sometimes once a week sometimes twice a month, but I always remember him. He was an educator and he always asked me why I wasn't in school. And I'm sure I gave him the same line. I told him that it wasn't that I didn't want to, but my circumstances were not right financially to go back. He would tell me every time that I was so intelligent and that there was something there that he just knew that I could do more. And again, I told him my circumstances were just a means to an end and that this was only temporary. Again, he would do his best to persuade me and I would do my best to persuade him. He would leave with a smile and a wave sometimes a hug and tell me he always wishes me the best. And he meant it.

Several years later while working on my final semester in my Master's program, I took a job in the field I'm still in today. After a week or two at my new, exciting job, I'm sitting in my little office and in walks this man that I used to serve coffee to at that ole fast food joint. He introduces himself to me and starts talking about being an educator and how this institution is a wonderful place to work. I immediately start grinning from ear to ear, because I find it highly amusing that this man doesn't recognize me at all. I politely let him go on and on until he finished what he had to say. I stand up out of my chair and said, "Jerry. You don't recognize me do you? We've met before." He squinted his eyes and though pretty hard before he gave up shaking his head and apologizing. "You look so familiar, but I'm sorry. I can't place you." "Jerry, I used to serve you coffee at Braum's."

Apparently, Jerry didn't recognize me without an apron, and with my hair down. I remember how excited he became and I soon filled him in on my education endeavors. It was a pure joy to see him so proud of me and, yes, I felt accomplished after his approval of my success. In these last five years we always catch up with one another at every Christmas luncheon that our institution had and he always stated how proud he was of me. Sometimes he would brag about me to others that would be standing with us. I always felt that I had to share at least one accomplishment in my career since the last time I saw him. And I would always thank him for believing in me and giving me the boost to go back to school.

That wonderful and supportive man was Jerry Vickers. He died on Sunday and I couldn't be sadder than I am right now. I didn't work with him side by side nor did I see him more than twice a year. But I always looked forward in seeing him at our Christmas luncheon. I'm glad that every time I did see him that I did thank him and tell him what he meant to me. Big hugs to you Jerry! We're going to miss you!

I watch way too many cartoons that is allowed by someone my age. I'm aware of this.

Since the moment I have heard Governor Sarah Palin's voice I couldn't help but think of the cartoon King of the Hill episode, "Revenge of the Lutefisk," where Reverand Karen Stroup, from Minnesota, made her debut as the new pastor at the Hills' church.

Palin sounds just like Karen Stroup. I wish I could find a pictue or some audio clip of her. I can't stop picturing this character everytime I hear a sound bite or watch Palin on TV.

I've googled and searched and I can't find a picture or an audio video clip. Please post if you can find one!

Sorry mom. I don't mean to disrespect anyone from Minnesota like that. BTW: Mary Tyler Moore is credited for Stroup's voice.
