No Torso is no longer a band.

Lars, Chris and Kristian left the band after the US tour, yet we tried to continue. Soon we realized that No Torso should be put to rest and remain a memory of a really good time of our lives we all can be proud of. There's no drama to this descision at all.

Thank you all so much for supporting us throughout the years! Thanks for writing us, encouraging us, inspiring us, buying our records, letting us sleep on your floor and caring about the music No Torso created. We're all grateful and we still talk about all the great people we've met through these years. You will be remembered!

Thank you.

P.S This site will stay.

"Despite existing in Europe for the past six years, the No Torso's distinctive ska beats did not formally reached the North American shores until 2006.  I have to admit, I fall into that category of people unfamiliar with No Torso and am just finding introduction to the group with their six song 2008 Ready Already EP.  Truthfully I'm appalled at my lack of familiarity because No Torso might just be one of the only ska bands to genuinely advance the stagnant genre past 90's third wave nostalgia.  Critics applauded Big D and the Kids Table's Strictly Rude album as the most important ska album of the decade - but I didn't really buy into that, it simply drew too heavily on past influences instead of looking ahead.  On the other hand, No Torso have crafted a sound that subtly draws upon almost every ska influence imaginable, while sounding incredibly fresh and relevant to todays music.

They accomplish this by having a lead vocalist, Lars Oskarssen, with an incredibly smooth voice, and a slight but evident "indie" orientation that produces a very soulful flow to most tracks - quite a mouthful for something that feels so natural.  The band also consists of a massive eight members, including a sizable and incredibly tight brass section.  Thankfully nothing is overused since the band draws upon trumpets, horns and their jazzy sax for specific purposes.  Instrumentally, many track intros, with their short and bouncy trumpet blows, draw initial comparisons to bands like Boston's Mighty Mighty Bosstones.  But while they retain the Bosstones' "big" feel, the tracks subtly morph into their own entities.  For example, after a very reggae inspired introduction, a portion of "You Tell Me's" chorus actually had me making comparisons to New York Punk Cabaret The World/Inferno Friendship Society.  Meanwhile, other tracks like "Oh Brother" take on a "swing" inspired feel.  To say the least, finding this many influences in six tracks is a rarity.

Lyrically, No Torso preaches an incredibly sunny outlook on life not uncommon to ska groups.  Even tracks about loss an disapointment, like "Suffering in Stereo," emit a sense of optimism. Thankfully though, the soundscape overshadows the lyrics, allowing for overlooking their cliched nature.

In six songs and 17 minutes No Torso demonstrates a refreshing interpretation of ska.  Their sparing use of their immense horn section and integration of various influences make them accessible to practically anyone.  Because of such wide appeal, I anticipate finding Ready Already on various year end lists. No Torso - Ready Already
I'd like to go on record and say that, after probably close to 100 listens, I'm certain that No Torso's "Ready Already" EP is the most inspiring ska release I've heard in my own lifetime. A bold and obviously biased statement, I know, but I've just never been so moved by a ska release in the admittedly short 20 years I've been alive.

The timing couldn't be better, either. It's pretty safe, I think, to say that ska music in general has been stagnant on a creative level for quite some time. I'm of the opinion that just about every band, save for the masters, has relied on a sound rehashed from any one of the major eras of ska music. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's impossible to deny that it's made for an incredible amount of horrible bands and records. In playing devil's advocate, there's a good chance that any outside observer would probably view the modern global ska scene as a murky cesspool of uninspired, unmotivated acts punctuated by a few gems. Effort has taken a back seat to hundreds of lazy attempts by half-assed bands.

No Torso, as I see it, is one of the very, very few bands to have actually gone back to the drawing board, and the result is something magnificent. It's a result similar to that of any of the aforementioned few bands that have taken the time and effort to rethink and re-imagine ska music and turned it into something wonderful. I'm reluctant as hell to name drop, but I can't resist drawing a parallel between No Torso and legends The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Much in the same way that the unquestionably revolutionary Bostonians were able to craft a completely fresh sound built on the foundation laid by the true pioneer's of ska music, No Torso is setting a new creative standard for our generation.

Unlike a vast (and I mean vast) majority of young ska bands, No Torso presents themselves in a way that suggests an apparent knowledge for authentic, traditional ska and rocksteady. Combined with top-notch musicianship (especially for their age, some of them can't even drink in the US), this is what makes for an unforgettable record.

So, this is a lot of incredible hype, I know, but it's hard to hold back with these guys.

This was the first thing we officially recorded and released. All songs recorded in a local studio in Dec 2003 and February 2004 and actually never ment to be more than a demo for ourselves. Then Fucking Northpole Records wanted to release it and we said:"Ok. Cool!" Fun times. Young, energetic and enthustiastic. Some people told me they like some of the tracks so why not?

Here it is: http://www.badongo.com/file/9606780

And I think Asian Man Records also have a cople left in their Garage. Check out: www.asianmanrecords.com

Hey folks!

We're finally back home after an enjoyable, but also painful US tour. We started out at the east coast and played some cool shows there. Especially in Syracuse NJ at Funk N Waffles and at the Jerican rooftop in Brooklyn where we met the great guys in Detonate. We already miss hanging out with you guys. We also played in Huntington, Boston, Knoxville, Malvern (Josh's house), Clark to name a few. Our van broke down after the New Orleans show in the middle of the night in Natchatotches, Louisiana. It was night to July 5th so all the motels and hotels were taken of course. We were hoping that the van would be fixed by Monday (we got there Saturday) but they didn't fix it before Tuesday. We spent alot of money on this auto repair and were pretty optimistic. After six hours of driving the van stopped again. Same problem. We got a tow truck and then brought it to auto repair again. The next day it broke down after 3 hours. This time we didn't even think about trying to get it fixed since we already had used 1000 dollars on auto repair. Therefore we had somone from some nice girls working at Subway in Cisco driving us to the nearest auto rental place. They only got a seven seat dodge mini-van. That meant that three people had to get to the west-coast in some different way. Lars, Chris and I entered the Greyhound bus the same night in Big Springs, Texas. The first bus didn't show up because it was involved in an accident, the second bus had space for us but not the luggage and then we finally got onboard in the third bus after eight hours. We had to change bus in El Paso and when we got there the next bus was already full so we had to wait for the next one. After waiting a couple of hours we entered the bus at 4:30 am. The bus stopped in San Jose the next day at 6:30 am. We had been in and out of buses and waiting for about 40 hours so we were pretty exhausted. Luckily Skylar at Asian Man came and picked up us and drove us to his grandma's house where the other guys were sleeping. Thanks alot man! We played the two last shows at Nickel City and Gilman street. Two great shows with great crowds that gave us some joy in all the misery and cancelled shows.

This tour was all that I think a tour can be and this is only one little piece of the whole story. We were especially amazed by all you americans who helped us when everything failed and we are forever thankful for what you did to us in a tricky situation. We could have written a longer list of all the accidents and bad luck. We could have been bitter and sad, but thanks to all the great people we met we can't and won't. I think you guys were worth the whole experience.

Big thanks to the following people:

The pilot who picked us up in the middle of the night in Cisco, Jordan and her family, Jhonny and his girlfriend, the police in Louisiana who picked us up and found a place for us to stay, Skylar and Joa of course (we miss you), Mike (thanks for supporting us all the way and the barbeque and drive to the airport and the van we borrowed), Detonate (great guys), Half Past Two (sorry for all the shows we missed, thanks alot for all the gear), Ray at Greyhound (thanks for the supportive chat), the girls at Subway in Cisco, The Duppies (thanks for all the sofas and great music), Monkeys (thanks for understanding and for the great show you put on), Josh and his family (thanks for all the support and floors!), the girl at the Liquor store in Natchatothes (sorry for keeping you busy), Fast Bob and Yumi, Tom and Angry Banana (New Orleans was great), Keith the keyboardplayer in Huntington, Mikes van (you sure did your thing), all the people who showed up at shows and bought merch and all the bands we played with on this tour. I bet I forgot someone which I'm really sorry for.

At the same time we want to say sorry to all the people and promoters at the shows we missed. We really tried.. We hope to see you guys sometime soon!

A very special thanks to Sean Morris for booking and supporting us all the way. Thanks alot for everything!

Pictures will soon come!

And oh.. Preorder our new EP Ready Already from www.asianmanrecords.com

The question is: Were we ready already after all? Noone knows.

hey

As we speak we're sitting in a house in the suburbs of Philadelphia. We've played four shows on the north east coast of the USA; New Jersey, New York City (a Brooklyn rooftop), Syracuse and Boston. The shows have been great and thanks to everyone who has showed up and skanked their feet off. Also a big up to the people who has provided us with beds and shelter. Also a lot of thanks to the bands we've played with so far.

Tomorrow we're leaving for Huntington, West Virginia and this is where our US tour starts for real. We can't wait and are lookng forward to play with other bands and meet new cool people ( if someone has a floor where we could sleep, shout out your name and we will totally dig).

A very special thanks to our hero, Sean Morris, who has made this possible for us. Sean's dog, Mable (the unstable), is awesome. Also thanks to Sean's friend Josh who have been so nice to give us a place to stay for two days.

Hope to see you all on the forthcoming shows.

Peace and Love from NO TORSO

Current mood:  focused
Category: Music

Hello!

Alot of studio work has been done this month. We went to Grand Sport studio past week and recorded four tracks. Bass, guitars and drums recorded live the first day. The second day Eivind, Hans and Bendik came and recorded some brass.

Some neat Royer mics and a VOX amp, Fender Deluxe Reverb amp and an old Ampeg borrowed from the studio did the job this time. We recorded everything on tape. The whole studio is an alog studio so we have to transfer the audio to digital before recording rest of the horns and vocals in other studios.

In this session we recorded mostly rock tracks and I think it'll be pretty awesome in the end. Now we have to sit down and listen and discuss how to move further in the process. Big up to Cato from Madrugada who did a great job in the studio. Thanks man!

In the meantime Lars was in Chris Lee's studio recording vocals on the first to tracks we recorded in Living Room. A bird flew across and told me that it sounds great!

Now we have six tracks for an upcoming EP. Hopefully we'll put it out this summer and maybe before the US tour. We have to find someone to release it, but hopefully the pieces will fall together pretty quick.

Ahead:

1) Recording horns on two tracks

2) Recording vocals on the four remaining tracks

3) Listen and add some extra spice

All I can say is that this will be the best music recorded by this band so far...

Thanks for the attention!
