I posted some of these before. Some of you are year round locals and some of you are summer locals. Some of you come down enough to relax that you are almost a local and some of you are tourists. But all of us share something in common. We all love .... Ocean City.. .. Maryland.... ! You know you are or were an Ocean City Local if: * Baseball's opening day is a little less important than Fish Tales and MR Duck's opening day.
* You've ever had a drink at the Harbor Inn
* You always look for your name and/or picture in the Coconut Times.
* You can stretch the season for wearing shorts to almost 10 months.
* You own a coat and tie, but you've only used it for weddings, funerals, and court appearances.
* You're a bit embarrassed about the very small amount of time you've actually spent laying on the beach.
* You ask bartenders to put on the Weather Channel.
* On most summer nights, a bike or motor scooter is your transportation of choice.
* You participate in at least one Bar Crawl each season.
* You've heard the ex-Mayor sing at a bar.
* Except for fundraisers, you've never even seen the new Mayor at a bar.
* You know at least 15 people that work at Seacrets.
* Before you bang it back, you tap your shot glass on the bar when having a "social" with friends.
* You just smile when a "summer local" talks about actually getting their seasonal condo rental security deposit back.
* You have 5 favorite bars... For 5 different reasons.
* You think that sitting on a stool on .. Wicomico Street.. , having an A-Stand cheeseburger & fries on a warm summer afternoon, is just as good an experience as dining in any four-star restaurant.
* You know what "The Pennsylvania Navy" is, and where the fleet is docked.
* You don't take for granted the quality of the local entertainment in town.
* The bartender asks you, "start a tab?", instead of "I need a credit card."
* You overtip servers.
* You've worked at a few, but have never been a spectator at a bikini contest.
* You go to at least five fundraisers and benefits every year.
* You have local friends from The Ukraine, .... Bulgaria.... , .... Lithuania.... , .... Russia.... , .... Nepal.... , and a few other countries that you can't even pronounce.
* You never wait in line, or pay cover charges.
* You have more "VIP Cards" to different clubs than credit cards.
* You've never been on the Boardwalk Tram, but plan on maybe doing it someday.
* The length of time you've been in OC is counted in "summers", not "years".
* You spend more time Bayside than .... Oceanside.... .
* You only sit at the original bar at Fish Tales, but you've heard rumors that there is a big, fancy, new one in the back.
* There's a WinterFest of Lights?
* You have a favorite place for crabs and crabcakes.
* A night on the 'Boards isn't complete without at least one drink at The Cork, The Clam, or The Moose.
* More people know your dog's name than your name.
* You've had at least 10 different jobs in town since you were a kid.
* You know which is the Raven's Bar, the Steeler's Bar, and the Redskins' bar in town.
* You know which bars not to drive home from - even if you've only had one drink.
* Classic Taxi is your local cab company of choice.
* You've only used it once or twice, but you still have a very old mug hanging from the ceiling at The Turtle.
* You can remember at least three other names of the bar at the location that is now called Buxy's Salty Dog.
* You love holidays. But just for the extra money they bring into town.
* When nothing brings back childhood memories of the Boardwalk more than the combined aroma of Coppertone, creosote, and Fisher's Popcorn. How many you can relate to??

MVA approves Ocean City organizational license plate, Applications for plate now being accepted at City Clerk’s Office
Ocean City, MD – Maryland citizens interested in obtaining an Ocean City, Maryland organizational license plate for their vehicle can now order one through the City Clerk’s Office.
The new license plate, which features the vintage Ocean City logo displaying the white marlin, has recently received approval from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
The cost to obtain the license plate is $35 per tag number. An application must be submitted with the fee. Applications are available at City Hall, 301 Baltimore Avenue, or through the town’s web site at www.town.ocean-city.md.us. Your vehicle must be registered in the State of Maryland. Plate numbers are assigned by the MVA.
The Town of Ocean City Department of Tourism last fall conducted a poll to pick a new license plate via its web site at www.ococean.com, where citizens overwhelmingly selected what has been referred to as the vintage Ocean City logo. Following approval from the Mayor and Council, the winning design was submitted to the Motor Vehicle Administration’s review committee. The town received word late last week that the committee had signed off on the town’s submission using the vintage logo.
For more information about the license plate program, call the City Clerk’s office at 410-289-8824.

Winter in Ocean City MD
..TR>
 |

Enjoy more Ocean City wintry pics posted in our picture section.

Many years ago, Ocean City was a summer resort destination that started on Memorial Day weekend and ended on Labor Day weekend. When the crowds slowed, the stoplights would go in winter mode and you could travel from the inlet to the Delaware line and only see yellow blinking stop lights. Most businesses would shut down and Ocean City was a virtual ghost town. Now things are different. Many restaurants are open, especially on weekends. For those who needed a second mortgage on their home to vacation here in the summer only need a few dollars in the winter. Most hotels offer rates below $100 a night and some have rates below $50 a night. Many hotels offer specials that offer meals, hotel, and activities for one low price. The Fenwick Inn for example has rates under $60 a night with an indoor pool + current happy hour specials that include dollar drafts and a half pound of steamed Shrimp under $4. Hotel rooms are in abundance and you can watch the weather channel and know in advance if the weather will be decent and make reservations for a weekend on Friday. If you are coming from the Bay Bridge, the traffic is minimal and enjoyable. Besides great food, you can swim in the indoor pool if your hotel offers it. Dine next to a warm fire, ice skate at the Carousel, shop at the local stores and outlets, play games at the arcade, play indoor miniature golf on 68th St at Old Pro, walking the boardwalk, go to the movies, + much much more. If you like beach combing, the shells are plentiful in the winter. And there is nothing like seeing snow in Ocean City.
Also besides the Winterfest lights, parades and activities, there's plenty of fun on St Patricks day also. In February, we have The Collectors Auto Show and Seaside Boat Show to enjoy.
Batman's friend; Carol Sottili of the Washington Post wrote a article on what to do in the wintertime in OC: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/15/AR2008011502947.html?referrer=emailarticle
Thanks, Batman for sharing it.
Last year we did a poll of favorite winter activities in OC. Below are the results of several beach lovers: You may post yours below in the comment section.
Beth:
I love OC anytime of year, but the winter has a certain peace about it. Walking on the beach and watching the surfers in the frigid ocean...seeing their true love for the ocean!!! Riding bikes on the boards with my kids. And last but not least... throwing starfish back into the ocean to give them a second chance....everyone can make a difference even if it's a little one :) Favorite places to eat: BJ's, Bull on the Beach, and Harborside in WEST OC. Can't wait for the Shark to reopen :) Ocean City is my way of life!!!! My family goes to the ST. Patty's day celebration in O.C. every year in March and I would like to say that my fav hotel in the winter is the Fenwick inn..I love the imdoor pool and hot-tub and it is reasonably priced...My other favorite which im sure is no secret is my favorite nightspot..which is of course secrets..by the indoor atmosphere you would never know its 30 degrees outside..I love me some O.C. in the summer but I love the St. Patty's day celebration just as much!!!!!

I love the Festival of Lights, letting my dogs run on the beach, the ice skating rink at the Carousel, indoor putt-putt, and the inside stuff the Best Western has! :)
Mandi
I just wanted to add that being in OC during the winter has a terrific feel to it. It has a homey feeling that it loses sometimes in the summer of the hustle and bustle of all the people. I love of being able to go the to year round places and hang out and feel like you are truly hanging out with friends.
Sheri
Hi Ocean City.....Oh how I love it there ANY time of the Season!!!!! I have been visiting OCcMD for the past 9years. My son I have just started going in the off season as well. There's lots to do no matter time of the year :O)~ However during the winter months my favorite thing to do is: My son and I still enjoy the visit to Assateague Island. WE always stay on 25th street and we get a Ocean front room with private balcony. We leave the screen door open and just admire the beach no matter what the temp is outside! My son's favorite thing in winter probably woul dbe getting all the seashells. You wouldn't believe the seashells you find. Can't forget Winterfest: It's so awesome to see the town all decorated for the Holidays. I can't visit OCMD With out having breakfast at DoughRoller's ~~~>yum. And pizza at Tony's. Green turtle is deff a favorite. during the winter we come to visit atleast 3 days every month however in the summer we are there for 3 weeks. i'd have it no other way! Ocean City Md is the BEST beach EVER!!!!!!!!!
Tara
Let's see. My favorite things about OC in the winter time? 1. No lines at Thrashers on a Sunday afternoon. 2. Beach combing with the dog. 3. Sunday football - best specials are at Seacrets and Ponzetti's. 4. Green Turtle West for College hoops. 5. Driving from the inlet to the 90 bridge in 10 minutes. 6. Indoor Putt Putt at Old Pro Golf. 7. Winter Fest Lights at North Side Park 8. Friends calling you when they are coming to town and they already have a place to stay! (lol) 9. Surfing alone 10. Driving to work without traffic.
ZachyG
Restaurant...Dumser's :) Activity...walking the cold sand :) I miss you OC :(
Krista Renee
When its so quiet on Coastal Highway you can hear the waves...even on bayside! Half price bottle of wine night at Marlin Moon Grill!
Patty
I have been to Ocean City in all 4 seasons! Winter we usually get a package deal at one of the hotels. Depending on the weather we walk on the beach, hang out at the indoor pool and jacuzzi and go shopping at the outlets. In the evenings we try different restaurants that may be too crowded in the summer then maybe go out for a nightcap at one of the bars. Basically we just go to relax, have a good time and forget about the "real world" for a while.
Tara
hmm its been about 12 years since I have lived in OC but what I loved about the winter was... NO TRAFFIC!!! That was also the time all the locals got to know each other... It was wonderful!!
Joey
Washing clothes, getting your unemplyment check, and getting drunk all on the same day, AND on the same block!! God Bless 8th st Laudromat, the Unemplyment office, and Pickles Pub!! WOOO HOOOO!!!!(Editor's Note: Some businesses in OC close for the winter and the businesses lay off in the fall and rehire in the spring and some locals get to play all winter)
Jessi
I really just like the down time to relax. I've lived here my entire life, and all of the hustle and bustle gets old after a little while. So it's really nice to just RELAX. And the winter specials for locals at restaurants and bars are really nice. One more thing, it is cool when it snows at the beach. :-)

Ocean City Football Poll
We took a poll looking for the biggest fanbase in Ocean City. Any visitor in OC off season and especially during football season can tell you that there are some big football fans watching the games at area restaurants and bars.
As of November 17th, the following results are in:
Coming in strong in 1st place:
The Ravens. I guess there is no surprise here. They are a Maryland team. It wasn't even close. They were far ahead from the beginning. They are also my team!
Number 2:
The Redskins: If you go to BJs during a Skins football game, you will see why they came in the top two. They are a loud crowd!
Number 3: The Steelers. 3rd place surprised me given the number of PA plates and Steeler shirts & hats all around.
Number 4: The Eagles. Only time I see Eagles shirts is during the football games at Smitty McGees.
scoring at least one vote:
Titans - Cowboys - Browns - Jets - Bengals

Christmas in Ocean City Maryland
If you are not an OC Local or never visited OC between Thanksgiving and New Years, it might be hard to imagine Ocean City as a Coastal Winter Wonderland. Hotels, Coastal Highway, Baltimore Ave, Restaurants, Malls, Shops, the Inlet, Northside Park, homes, the Boardwalk, and many others all celebrate the Christmas season with Style.
Ocean City's Fabulous Winterfest of Lights
The Town of Ocean City has assembled an awesome array of holiday light displays for its annual Winterfest of Lights.

Now with more than 750,000 lights and hundreds of displays, the 2 1/2-month celebration draws thousands of visitors to Northside Park at 125th Street and bayside and the Ocean City Inlet.
From mid-November through January, visitors will see unique light setups befitting a seaside resort, with Surfing Santas, animated Sharks, Santa hooking a Marlin from a charter boat, jumping Marlin, and Santa playing softball.
At Northside Park, the centerpiece of the celebration, you're welcomed by a magnificent sand sculpture and the city's 60-foot Christmas tree.
You'll also see Santa Claus at his workshop there in the weeks before Christmas. New for 1996-97 were a wedge of Swans, six Geese laying eggs, and a Skull Mountain display to accompany the Peter Pan and Captain Hook figurines from previous years.
One of Ocean City's boardwalk trains will carry you down the paths of displays at Northside Park for $4 for adults and free for children 12 years of age and younger.
Nautical decorations are the theme at the Ocean City Inlet, where you can see an animated "Jaws" swim in animation as the fins slowly cross the water until the giant shark thrusts its head and sharp teeth out of the water.
You can see all of the displays at the Inlet, including the new Christmas Tree Forest, from the comfort of your car.
You can drive right through the middle of the forest, and drive along the beach edge of the parking lot to get an up-close view of the other displays.
Along the way, you'll see King Neptune being hauled by three Seahorses, a family of whales playing in the water, and a fisherman hooking a marlin from his boat.
Other Inlet displays include a mermaid with a chest full of buried treasure, Surfing Santa, a Lighthouse, and a display celebrating the birth of Baby Jesus.
From the Inlet to 15th Street, light poles are wrapped like candy canes and all up and down Coastal Highway are numerous, smaller decorations. As you can imagine, a great deal of planning and work goes into the making of such an extravaganza.
It takes Ocean City workers 42 days to set up all of the displays.
Work begins in October as workers hang the brackets necessary to hold the Boardwalk banners and begin electrical work and construction of the support structures for the light displays, some of which contain 5,000 bulbs.
Fourteen employees from the Ocean City Department of Recreation and Parks and another nine employees from the Town of Ocean City combine to light the town up.

Public Works employees use aerial trucks to install decorations on the light poles from 15th to 33rd streets and another truck is needed to erect the 60-foot Christmas tree at Northside Park.
The majority of the displays must be assembled on-site and it takes three men and their equipment more than 40 hours to install the mammoth light display.
Then there is the 30-foot lighthouse scene at the Inlet, which requires the assistance of 10 men to lift.
Sixteen miles of wire criss-crossing the 10-mile long beach power the lights, which cost the city more than $25,000 in electric bills.
After all of the lights are turned on to start the celebration, they are tested again each morning to make sure they are still working. from Beach Net
