PHILADELPHIA -- Elton Brand's long-awaited return to the Philadelphia 76ers will be on hold until at least Saturday.

Brand dislocated his right shoulder Dec. 17 and worked out on the court before Monday's game against Dallas. He was placed on the inactive list for the 16th consecutive game. Coach Tony DiLeo said Brand most likely will play Saturday against the New York Knicks.

The76ers are 9-6 without Brand and have won a season-best seven straight games entering Monday. They were 11-14 when the 6-foot-8 forward was sidelined.

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand will be sidelined for a month because of a dislocated shoulder.

Team officials say the Sixers' leading scorer has a fracture and tear in his right shoulder but will not need surgery. Brand was hurt Wednesday night in a 93-88 win against Milwaukee.

"It's unfortunate that this happened, but we're starting rehab right away and I'm going to do everything I can to get back as soon as possible," Brand said in a statement released by the team Thursday.

"While I'm disappointed that I can't be on the court, during this time I'm going to continue to support my teammates and the coaches in any way they need me."

Brand is averaging 15.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season.

A playoff team last season, the 76ers struggled to a 9-14 start before firing coach Maurice Cheeks last week. They are 2-0 under interim coach Tony DiLeo.

Brand signed a five-year, $80 million contract on July 9 after two seasons with the Chicago Bulls, followed by seven seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers. He was limited to only eight games last season with the Clippers because of a left Achilles tendon injury.

Elton Brand made his long-awaited season debut and scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, Al Thornton had 21 points and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Seattle SuperSonics 102-84 on Wednesday night.

Brand had missed the entire season while recovering from a surgically repaired left Achilles’ tendon, after being injured during an offseason workout on Aug. 3.

Brand finished with 19 points and five rebounds, hitting seven of 15 shots and making all five of his free throws. The former All-Star didn’t just make an appearance either, coming up with key baskets throughout the fourth quarter.

Elton Brand this week took the next step in his recovery from surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon. Brand went for a checkup in Delaware, where he had his surgery, and he was cleared to begin dribbling and taking stationary shots.

"We are pretty much still with the original plan," said Dr. Craig Morgan, who performed the surgery at Christiana Care's Wilmington Hospital. "The rest of his rehabilitation is going to be getting his strength back."

Brand, who suffered the injury during a regular offseason workout in August in Southern California, is set to begin the new activities Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first had the report.

A normal timetable for recovery from Achilles tendon injuries is about a year, but Brand is targeting February 2008 for his return.

Morgan said Brand would need to have about 90 percent of his overall strength in his left Achilles tendon before he would be cleared to practice. Right now, he's at about 75 percent. "He looks good," Morgan said. "He is right on schedule."

The Orange County Register

EL SEGUNDO -- Clippers star forward Elton Brand will travel to Delaware a week from today for a medical re-evaluation on his left Achilles' tendon. Brand will be examined by Dr. Craig Morgan, who performed the surgery to repair Brand's ruptured Achilles' tendon last August.

Brand has been on a progressive rehabilitation program since his protective boot was removed in October. In addition to weight training, he also does cardiovascular training and has been doing limited courtwork that includes ball handling, passing and form shooting.

The Clippers have purchased a new, state-of-the art treadmill machine that Brand hopes he will be medically cleared to begin training next week.

Brand said the toughest thing for him now is not being able to contribute to a team that is mired in a five-game losing streak and a skid in which the Clippers have dropped nine of the past 11 games.

"It's very difficult being hurt and watching, and not being able to help,'' Brand said after Monday's practice at Spectrum South Bay. "When we were 4-0 and doing well, it was kind of easy to watch. All I had to do was root and be happy. Now, it's definitely tough.''
Although he will not travel with the team, until he is cleared for more extensive basketball activity, Brand is at every practice, in the locker room before home games, and on the team bench for home games.

"I try to keep morale as high as possible,'' he said, "and work on my stuff, so that when I am able to come back, I can join the process as soon as possible.''
Brand said he has gained at least 10 pounds of muscle from the program that Clippers strength and conditioning coach Rich Williams designed for him. But Brand said he does not want the weight gain to take away any of his quickness.
He continues to point toward February for his return to action.

"I'm not trying to target any particular date,'' Brand said. "But (February) would be the six-month time table and this is a 6-8 month injury, so I was trying to target the closest date.''

The Clippers certainly miss the scoring, the rebounding and the blocked shots that Brand's game has produced on a consistent basis, throughout his eight-year career.
"I definitely miss playing, of course,'' Brand said, "but also the (comradeship), being on the road with the team, competition, bonding with your teammates and trying to win games. I definitely miss that, a lot.''

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Clippers' forward Elton Brand had his surgically repaired left Achilles tendon re-examined today by Dr. Craig Morgan at Christiana Care's Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. During the examination Brand was advised by Dr. Morgan that he no longer needed to remain in the walking boot he has worn since September 18th.

Brand has been cleared to take part in advanced cardiovascular work which includes elliptical and treadmill cardiovascular conditioning in addition to aqua-therapy. Brand will also continue his upper body strength program and localized rehabilitation of the injury. He will be re-evaluated by Dr. Morgan in six weeks to determine further progress and treatment protocols.

Brand originally sustained the injury during his daily workout on Friday, August 3rd at the Spectrum Club South Bay in El Segundo, California. Dr. Morgan performed the surgery to repair the injury on Tuesday, August 7th.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Clippers cornerstone forward Elton Brand ruptured his left Achilles tendon on Friday during his usual daily workout.

Brand, 28, is expected to undergo surgery next week and joins teammate Shaun Livingston on the list of long-term injury victims for the Clippers.

The Clippers have received a preliminary medical indication that Brand will be sidelined only six months. If so, Brand would be in line for a comeback in February.

"It's unfortunate that this had to happen," Clippers vice president of basketball operations Elgin Baylor said in a statement. "But knowing Elton and how dedicated he is to his profession and how hard he works, I believe he'll be back 100 percent as good as ever."
