We're going to do what we do best give you a little bit of news, some analysis, opinion, and a some laughs along the way as we cover the New York City high school sports scene on the Award Winning "On the Sidelines" with Vinny Aceto, Friday, February 5, 2010 at 1:00 PM.
With Super Bowl XLIV to be played this weekend, we’ll take the time to commemorate the 2009 PSAL High School football season. We will revisit the annual affair from New Utrecht H.S. where the city’s finest High School football players gathered for their award ceremonies. The 2009 PSAL Football Coaches Association All-City selections will be revealed on the show as we herald the top PSAL football players for 2009. Not to be outdone we will also declare the 2009 ALL-ACETO High School Football Team.
In addition, we’ll celebrate Media Day with Rich Ackerman (MSG Varsity) as we discuss their entry into the high school sports panorama. Then, John Morriello (President of the NY State Sports Writers Association) visits with us to converse about Glens Falls no longer hosting the State Federation Basketball Tournament after next month.

While the football games are done for the year, it’s always football season ‘On the Sidelines.’ This week is no exception as we relive South Bronx’ run to the PSAL Football Cup on a special Holiday Football Friday edition of the award winning "On the Sidelines" with Vinny Aceto, Friday, December 18, 2009 at 1 PM.
For the full hour this week we’ll analyze the New York City Public High School Football Cup title game with all the noteworthy players. 91.5 FM Public High School Player of the WeekPost Season Week 3 Championship Game Andy McCoy (WR, Curtis) hauled in 78 yard catch and run to the house with 5 seconds remaining in the first quarter to put Curtis on the board. He finished the day with 3 receptions for 119 yards and a touch. McCoy put the icing on the Championship cake with a fourth and eleven, 20 yard reverse with 1:19 remaining in the game to secure the Warriors 16-10 triumph over borough rival Tottenville. Curtis wins their fifth City Championship in the past 13 years.
Post Season Week 3 Championship Division Jevon Gardner (QB, Curtis) engineered last minute drive that propelled the Warriors to the championship game with a 20-19 come from behind victory over top seeded Fort Hamilton. After scoring the touchdown that brought Curtis within one with 31 seconds left in the season, he found Jevon Gardner in the endzone café for the game clinching two point conversion.
Marvin Staten (RB, Tottenville) tallied three times as the Pirates advanced to the title game with a 33-18 win over Erasmus. The senior finished with 176 yards on 21 carries.
Bowl Division Kadeem Bailey (RB, Jefferson) helped the Orange Wave to their first football crown, since the days of Moe Finkelstein in 1975, when he rushed 26 times and collected 200 yards and a pair of touches.
Cup Division Joseph Garcia (K, South Bronx) booted the game winning 26 yard field goal with 8:36 remaining in the contest to as the Phoenix rose and captured the Cup with a 15-14 victory over previously undefeated Automotive.
Post Season Week 2 Jevon Gardner (RB, Curtis) filling in for the injured Shaquan Coles propelled the Warriors to the Championship Division semi-finals when he galloped for 195 yards on 34 carries with a pair of second half touchdowns as Curtis impeached Clinton, 20-8.
Post Season Week 1 Naquan Alexander (RB, Sheepshead Bay) tallied thrice on his way to a 169 yard day on 16 carries as the Sharks came from behind and surfed past Susan Wagner, 34-28, in a Championship Division first round playoff game. Alexander scored on runs from 15 and 85 yards in the final 6:11 of the first half to give Sheepshead Bay a 20-16 halftime lead. He added a 4 yard third quarter touch to extend the Sharks advantage to 26-16, and final two point conversion to seal the deal with 1:40 remaining in the contest.
Week 9 Shaquan Coles (RB, Curtis) the PSAL’s leading rusher (1,598) garnered 366 yards on 38 carries while recording a quadruple of touchdowns, on runs of 5, 30, 66, and 2 yards, as Curtis conquered Port Richmond, 32-19.
Week 8 Naquan Alexander (RB, Sheepshead Bay) opened the scoring on the first play from scrimmage with a 59 yard dash to the house enroute to a four touchdown and 174 yard day on 11 carries as the Sharks submerged Brooklyn Tech 34-13. The other scores came from 21, 18, and 39 yards out.
Week 7 Davon Collins (RB, New Utrecht) galloped for 203 yards on 14 carries while recording four touchdowns as the Utes defeated Grady, 40-6.
Week 6 Troy Greaves (K, WR, LB, Lafayette) booted the game winning field goal as time ran out for a 9-7 victory over Stuyvesant ending the Patriots 32 game losing streak. Coincidently their last win came on September 16, 2006 also against the Peglegs. Greaves contributed on both sides of ball by registering 10 tackles with a sack and also catching 3 passes for 43 yards.
Week 5 Andrae Simpson (HB/LB, South Bronx) recorded 11 tackles and a sack, while also delivering a rushing touchdown (4-93 yards) as the Phoenix rose over Petrides, 38-0, delivering their first loss of the season in the Cup Division.
Week 4 Curtis Defensive Unit overwhelmed and overpowered the Madison Offense (which totaled negative 19 yards for the day) in their 54-0 shutout. Limited the Knights ‘O’ to a solitary first down (which came on their first possession). Penn State bound Dominique Easley had six tackles and tallied on an 18 yard pick six, Taykwan Lynch recorded a safety; Kassim Forbes recovered a fumble, while Jevon Gardner (six tackles) and Kirk Dudley each registered sacks. Andy McCoy had a reservation for 6 with a 57 yard punt return.
Week 3 Matt Popovic (QB, New Dorp) had a hand in six of the Central Cougars seven touchdowns in their 49-14 conquest of Bayside. He had touchdown runs of 1, 35, 14 and 34 (8 carries for 115 yards) while throwing for two more from 24 and 39 yards out (6-11,106 yards).
Week 2 Andrew Vital (QB, Abraham Lincoln) the Railsplitters signal caller had a spectacular day, completing 9 of 12 passes for 137 yards and a touch while galloping for 192 yards on 23 carries totaling 3 touchdowns and the decisive two point conversion in the thrilling, 34-32, overtime victory over Canarsie.

Defending champion Port Richmond HS head coach Lou Vesce drops by to break down the Championship Division semi-finals, having lined up against all of the final four schools.
Meanwhile, top seeded Automotive HS and second seeded South Bronx HS will vie for the PSAL Cup on Sunday. Haseeb Kwawaja (Automotive) and Jose Cosme (South Bronx) both pay us a visit prior to their title tilt.

Post Season Week 1 Naquan Alexander (RB, Sheepshead Bay) tallied thrice on his way to a 169 yard day on 16 carries as the Sharks came from behind and surfed past Susan Wagner, 34-28, in a Championship Division first round playoff game. Alexander scored on runs from 15 and 85 yards in the final 6:11 of the first half to give Sheepshead Bay a 20-16 halftime lead. He added a 4 yard third quarter touch to extend the Sharks advantage to 26-16, and final two point conversion to seal the deal with 1:40 remaining in the contest. Week 9 Shaquan Coles (RB, Curtis) the PSAL’s leading rusher (1,598) garnered 366 yards on 38 carries while recording a quadruple of touchdowns, on runs of 5, 30, 66, and 2 yards, as Curtis conquered Port Richmond, 32-19. Week 6 Troy Greaves (K, WR, LB, Lafayette) booted the game winning field goal as time ran out for a 9-7 victory over Stuyvesant ending the Patriots 32 game losing streak. Coincidently their last win came on September 16, 2006 also against the Peglegs. Greaves contributed on both sides of ball by registering 10 tackles with a sack and also catching 3 passes for 43 yards. Week 5 Andrae Simpson (HB/LB, South Bronx) recorded 11 tackles and a sack, while also delivering a rushing touchdown (4-93 yards) as the Phoenix rose over Petrides, 38-0, delivering their first loss of the season in the Cup Division. Week 4 Curtis Defensive Unit overwhelmed and overpowered the Madison Offense (which totaled negative 19 yards for the day) in their 54-0 shutout. Week 1 Jimmy Hasson (K, Petrides) kicked the game winning 18 yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining to beat Stevenson 23-20.

Sheepshead Bay had a dramatic, late come from behind victory over Susan Wagner to advance to the Championship Division ‘Great Eight’ this weekend. This week we’ll take another ferry ride to Staten Island to converse with Pete Gambardella following Curtis’ first round playoff triumph over Lehman and his first at the helm of his alma mater.
