March is SMILE MONTH--help us reach our goal of 20 new smiles! The cost
of one child's surgery is just $240.

What can you do to
reach a goal of $240? How about giving up Starbucks, having a yard
sale, baking goodies for a Bake Sale or Hosting a Party With A Purpose?
All month long we'll feature tips on fun and easy ways you can help
raise money to provide a life-changing surgery to a child born with a
correctable facial deformity!

We'll give you a special web address where you can find donation forms and a Volunteer Toolkit later this week!

Once you get rolling, Post your progress and share your results on our MySpace Page so others can help reach their goal!

Together, we can heal children's smiles around the world!

Who is excited about the Academy Awards??? I LOVE watching them and even have friends over for a party (sometimes we dress up and perform fake acceptance speeches)

We are so excited that Slumdog Millionaire is nominated for ten Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture! This critically-acclaimed film tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who uses a television game show to reach the girl he loved and lost.

Operation Smile will be conducting a medical mission LIVE during the Academy Awards. Operation Smile’s volunteer teams will be performing free, life-transforming surgeries to children suffering from facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. You can follow the progress of this mission on Twitter by following @operationsmile for daily updates and statistics.

Click here for more info and to donate to children around the world-ANY amount can help--If your having an Oscar Party-why don't you ask your friends to bring a couple of bucks along to send in and Party with a Purpose!

Current mood:  hopeful
We are seeking new smiles by way of MySpace Friends--This week we will select one of our new friends and the person who referred them to us a mission t-shirt. Just like the ones our volunteer teams and Celebrity Smile Ambassadors wear on our medical missions.

All you have to do is send out a bulletin, blog about us, send direct messages or post messages on your friends page encouraging them to friend us!

Then at the end of the week, we'll randomly select one of our new friends, ask how they heard about us and you two could get an official t-shirt.

PLUS---we'll have new friends to help us spread the word about children around the world born with correctable facial deformities. The more friends we have the more smiles we can provide to truly change lives one smile at a time!

Thanks for being awesome and keep smiling!
<3

Tendral Meytok Gurung, from Nepal, was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate in April 2008.  Not being able to care for her and fearing her deformities were a curse, her family left her in a basket in a woodshed to die, in the same building where her brother – born with the same defect – had been left to die

In the summer while trekking through the Upper Dolpo region in northern Nepal, Buddhist monk Lama Tenzin Choegyal learned about Tendral and rescued the little girl.  Tendral’s family has three other healthy children and agreed to let Lama Tenzin care for Tendral.

He took her on a 30-day journey across mountains to an orphanage he established in northern India for orphans and underprivileged children in the region.  Lama Tenzin and his family founded an organization called the Children’s Education Development (CED) Society. The children receive an education and are returned back to the villages so that they can share what they’ve learned; helping to elevate/educate the other villagers. Lama Tenzin became concerned about the survival of Tendral because of the difficulty she had drinking from a bottle.
....

Seven-month-old Tendral arrived in Norfolk, Virginia, with guardians Lama Tenzin and his sister Samchue Negi on December 8.  Operation Smile, in partnership with Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD), provided Tendral with free reconstructive surgery on December 18.  Operation Smile CEO and Co-founder Dr. Bill Magee performed the four-hour surgery to repair Tendral’s cleft lip and cleft palate and said, “By helping a child, what we do is send a message about humanity to the world.”

Released from CHKD on December 20, Tendral is recovering well.  Tendral joins more than 200 other patients treated through Operation Smile’s World Care Program.  She will now be able to eat, drink and speak normally.  “This little baby, she will be back some day, one of the most beautiful and educated,” Lama Tenzin said.  “It’s not changing the life of one child.  It’s changing the entire history of Upper Dolpo.”

In Nepal, Tendral’s name means “harmony flower,” and everyone involved in helping this baby hopes she blossoms into a happy and healthy girl.  Tendral will leave Norfolk on January 17 and return to Lama Tenzin’s orphanage.  For more information, visit   www.himalayankids.org
