This person will be working behind a bar demonstrating how to make a mojito. The Spanish version of this copy will NOT be ready in time for the audition tomorrow. I would encourage the talent to create the translation and to NOT "wing it" tomorrow. Everyone should take the time to become as familiar with the copy as possible. There will be no teleprompter so being off book is essential The ideal candidate for this job is bi-lingual (Spanish and English). His English version must be very easy to understand (less accent than the guy in the sample link below) http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=-U5N2P9Cweo Hello, my name is your name here â€" V.I.P. bartender and master of the BACARDI Mojito cocktail. Everyone knows that the BACARDI Mojito is one of today’s hottest cocktails. But have you ever tried a BACARDI LIMÃ"NTM Mojito? Infused with the essences of real lemons and limes, BACARDI LIMÃ"NTM brings a crisp citrus flavor to this popular cocktail â€" and people everywhere are calling for it. This bold fusion of flavors may sound complicated, but in fact, it’s just as easy to make as the original BACARDI® Mojito cocktail â€" and I’ve got the recipe distilled down to four simple steps. We’ll start with a combination of mint and lime. You’ll need twelve fresh mint leaves and one half of a lime, sliced into quarters. The key to making the perfect BACARDI LIMÃ"NTM Mojito cocktail is using quality ingredients â€" which is why it is always important to use fresh mint and lime. To get the most flavor out of the mint and lime, we’re going to use a technique called “muddling.†Using a muddling tool, or the blunt end of a spoon, lightly mash the ingredients until their inner essences are released. Next, add two tablespoons of simple syrup, or four teaspoons of sugar, and top with ice. To make your own simple syrup, mix together equal parts of sugar and hot water ahead of time, and allow them to cool. Email mark@mullencasting. com for an appointment time. "How do I get an agent, casting director or a manager's attention? It seems almost impossible. Very lost and extremely frustrated, - Victoria"
Poor Victoria! She's suffering from a common problem in this business -- frustration. And I wish I could tell her otherwise, but there is no easy solution. In addition to enormous determination, talent, and luck, there are a few things she can do to increase her chances of one day getting an agent. Four of our experts reveals these secrets below, in this week's article.
Best wishes in your acting career!
- Chad Gracia President, ActorTips.com
---------------------------------------------------------- 1. How to Get an Agent
Victoria: Unless you graduated from a major college with a degree in acting, right now you do not need an agent/manager. What you need is experience. There are very few agents/managers who could get you seen by casting directors, unless you have the major school, or MAJOR huge talent, or are major drop dead gorgeous.
If one of these is true, then send your P/R into the agents. Put a clear label on the outside of the envelope saying, "Juilliard grad" or "Winner nat'l singing competition" or "Young Cary Grant" or whatever. But I truly believe the way to go is the showcase, indie films, grad school films. For information on making a perfect P/R, see here:
http://www.actortips.com/products/acting_resume_template.html
Get experience, work up the Off Off ladder. Network. Somewhere in there you will be seen, or meet someone who will give you a boost. If you get a review in The New York Times, TV network casting people will call you in for an interview.
So go to Off Off open calls (see my article on auditioning) or submit yourself using the format I have described in past articles (all are available in "Becoming A Successful Actor"). Your experience and work will get you the agent/manager.
- Janus
PS: Learn to cope with frustration. It and rejection are the major experiences for several years when you are beginning in this business.
==============
Be prepared, be practiced, be inquisitive. If you have no experience, you may not be ready to "catch their attention." You need to join workshops, take classes and get some real feedback as to where you stand. Are you good enough (yet) to audition for a large role? Can you hold a "supporting" role on film? Do you understand how to deliver lines in a commercial?
When you are convinced that you are ready, practice. When you are going for an audition, get the sides in advance and practice. Rehearse as if you were opening tomorrow! Know the dialogue; know the "moments before and after." Know your character. Nothing fails faster than not knowing.
Finally, ask questions. When you get your sides, you have only a few pages that do not tell you much about your role. Do we like or dislike this character? What is this person all about? Never be afraid to ask as many pertinent questions as you must. If your choices are too far off base and you never ask, you might never be told!
Then, go get any work you can. Small parts, five and under, extra work, anything. Put it all on your resume and start to build. When you have something to bite into, start mailings to find an agent. Be professional at a casting and the casting directors will remember you.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and most careers take between six to ten years to really take off. You can do it, just work at it. Break a leg,
- Reed Kalisher
==============
Dear Victoria, "Patience, Grasshopper." You ARE just a beginner, and you can't fake experience you don't have. No amount of flashy graphic design is going to make up for the ten professional productions you haven't been in yet.
My guess is that you're also operating on unrealistic expectations regarding how long you think it should take you to get your career off the ground. Were you thinking maybe a matter of months? A year? If you really want to be an actor, then you're in this for the long haul. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Give yourself AT LEAST five years before you even think about considering the possibility of even starting to entertain the idea of [being frustrated].
In the meantime, since you can't control whether or not industry folks pay attention to you, do what you can to increase the amount of experience you have: take classes, audition for showcases, produce your own stuff, go to meet-and-greets. If what you want to do is act and dance, then find any way you can to act and dance, and rest lightly with the big picture for a while. Good luck!
- Kathryn Blume
==============
...actors with years and years of professional experience have the same frustration in trying to find representation. There are two hot spots on a resume that an agent will look at: where you received your education and where you have performed.
If you didn't graduate from a leading drama department and you have never performed at an important venue, you're going to have to beef up your resume to get attention. Consider taking classes from a reputable studio.
I give this recommendation cautiously, as there are plenty of acting studios that promise showcases for agents when in fact the agents in question have no relationship with the schools and really, the only assurance you have is that they will be invited. Ask around. Call the studio and see if they can name specific agents who regularly attend showcases. Observe a class or two at different studios.
It is also not impossible to be cast without an agent, and you should also focus on getting some experience outside of academia.
Identify a reputable, small/mid-size theatre company you'd like to work with. See their work consistently. Speak briefly to the actors/director after each show, show real enthusiasm for their work, and ask if you can submit a headshot for future casting consideration.
Developing these relationships will take time, but getting out there and meeting people will help you a lot more than answering ads in Backstage. If your resume isn't strong, try making your impression in person. And even if your credentials won't get you an agent right now, it's not too early to start building a case for yourself with them.
Send a headshot and resume explaining that you're new to the business and look forward to the possibility of representation in the future. Then follow up with notes and postcards whenever you are performing. After you take your class or get cast, send another headshot with an updated resume, with a letter describing your progress. You should really never call the agency, but sending regular mailings is perfectly acceptable.
And lastly, come to accept your frustration and channel it into some productive energy that you can use to be aggressive about your career. Be diligent, try to keep working and learning, and give it time. Good luck.

How to Perform a Perfect Audition, Part II by Ruth Kulerman
Our last article focused on Preparation of Material and Preparation of Self for an audition. Did you notice that the "Self" section was twice as long as the "Material"? Do you remember that "Presence and Poise" will win you more roles than talent alone? Review the article on preparation. Then head for...
PRESENTATION To separate Presentation of MATERIAL from Presentation of SELF would require major surgery. So let's treat them as one subject, not two.
Your preparation of material (monologue / sides) is done: Your acting choices imaginative, daring, exciting. The delivery appropriate to the medium (film, TV, stage). The research on the company, the director, the material, etc., is thorough. You have written down and examined your weaknesses. You have rehearsed entering the audition room. You've dressed appropriately. No leather skin-fitting pants or ripped dirty jeans. No Playboy bunny outfit if the season is Coward, Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams and Inge.
You've neither drowned in perfume / shaving lotion nor, tumbled out of bed, skipping shower, razor, toothbrush and comb. No grunge. (These descriptions are not mine. They have come from people behind the casting table which you are now approaching.) Now what?
Before you open the door to the audition room, take half a second and unite every part of you. Gather your confidence, charm, smile, energy, your love of performance, your self-introduction, your audition material, wrap yourself in a gauze of generosity and humanity and then walk in feeling you are the best they will see. (Actually, you should have been doing all this the entire time you were waiting to go in.)
Think of this as a performance, not an audition. You have just entered to take down stage center or the camera is rolling. Remember a great part of their impression is formed as you walk in--before you open your mouth and long before you present your material. Step into the audition arena armed with all your preparation. Every thought, every action, everything you are and have been--all these walk in with you.
Be proud of having reached this moment in your life. Performing, to me, is the most exciting thing I can or ever will do. If you too feel that elation, take it with you. Walk in with joy. With pride. If you feel it, so will they. If you don't feel it, cultivate it. If this sounds un-cool, so be it. IT WORKS.
The people behind an audition table may seem like blocks of ice. Nevertheless even the toughest casting person responds subliminally to your presence. It may not seem so, but you, the actor, not the audition committee, greatly sets the tone for an audition. If life has just dumped on you, leave that pile outside the audition door. It will wait for you. But during those few minutes you audition, you are a star--unique, imaginative, fascinating as a person and a performer.
Just in passing: If you are reading sides for your audition, chances are there will be another reader or another person who is auditioning a scene with you. If the reader is marvelous, ah, an actor's dream. But a reader can be deadly, boring, dull, unimaginative. Do NOT let that change your choices. You don't have enough time to raise your "partner" to your level (if that were possible).
Yes, I know this defies all scene study classes, but this audition is about you, not your reader. Be exactly what you prepared unless the reader is so imaginative and giving that s/he opens up possible responses that you had not even thought about. Again, be in control (PS: Whether you loved them or loathed them, remember to thank your reader or your musical accompanist. You can even just mouth a silent "thank you." First, it is professional courtesy. Second, the auditioning table will notice. Professional courtesy is always a win-win situation.)
It doesn't matter what the casting people are doing: drinking coffee, reading your resume, yawning bored out of their heads. At one of my most unpleasant auditions, the artistic director turned his back to me and spoke to someone behind him throughout my entire reading. I later discovered he had already cast the role and of course was not interested in anyone else. So why did he call me in to read? And why the rudeness? Ah, that's a totally different article!
But to repeat, you have a job to do. Don't let any behavior behind the table--whether gracious or discourteous--interfere with your presentation of yourself and your audition material. If you are someone who picks up vibes, who senses moods in others--in other words, if you are a person with sensitive antennae--ignore whatever information is pouring in from the audition table. STICK TO YOUR PREPARATION PLAN--regardless of what you are sensing from them.
Your job is not to analyze them or their behavior. They may have the power to cast you, but they do NOT have the power to control your audition. That lies in your hands. This is not about them. It is about you. YOU. Stop trying to please them or trying to figure out "what they want." Stop paying attention to them. It divides your focus. Instead, discipline every cell inside you into doing precisely and exactly what you planned to do--on being exactly the person and performer you practiced being.
Performance of the sides / monologue varies from piece to piece, sides to sides. My strong suggestion is to work on about 12 monologues with a very good coach or teacher. You might even want to work on your sides with a coach. Let them teach you how to stretch your imagination and see new possibilities. Work with them until you yourself learn more than merely how to read for meaning but also learn how to read for the implications and subtleties that are inherent in written language.
Grab the casting directors' interest by selecting a monologue that is spectacular, one that shows several facets of your ability. Then discipline yourself to the point that you can do exactly what you planned to do at the audition. Dare to allow yourself to be your best. Insist that no scrim comes between you and your prepared material. Have the guts to be totally open, totally THERE, regardless of "them." How? Guidance, work, discipline, intelligence, imagination, energy, focus, courage, a drive to excel and a dedication to excellence.
Yes, this may all sound pie-in-the-sky. Well, I think we actors should reach for the sky. It is my belief that we should reach for and achieve total performance at every audition. That inner flame to excel will be perceived by anyone in casting. It may not get you the role but it will get their attention and you will be remembered.
What determines casting? That's a whole library, not a couple of articles! The reasons for casting someone change from role to role to role.
Which leads right back to that heart-breaking question in our last article: "I never heard from them. What happened?" After they exploded with praise, why weren't you cast? Or called back?
Well, most of the time you'll never know. Occasionally you can tell when you see the film or play and discover who was cast in "your" role. If you are up for a major role, the casting decision is often based on who they think will bring in the most money, because this is show business and the goal of business is to make money. But there are countless other reasons. A few times I've discovered why I did and why I didn't get cast. Each reason was unique, some were weird, some were logical. The director of a national TV show apparently thought so much of my acting choices that he used them in the show. He even commented on them at the call-back. Then why not cast me? My guess is this: the role was a dying patient in a hospital room shared by one of the stars of the show and I don't look like I'm wasting away with a terminal illness. I wouldn't cast me in that role. Wrong type. Then why the call-back? Ah, the casting mentality is a mysterious landscape.
But what about the heart-breaking example where they raved and raved and never called the actor back? We seldom know all the facts that go into a casting choice. There is a grocery list of possibilities in the "rave and rave" situation: they meant it, but found someone with better credit. They praised everyone who auditioned, not just you, because they wanted everyone to feel good. Or you were too tall, too short, you would have outshone the lead. Or the old bromide: They went another direction--whatever that means. I probably know 50 true stories why one actor was rejected and another one was cast. There is no common theme. You will probably never know. Rejection hurts. Period. But it is part of our acting world. A large part.
Examine your audition, grade it truthfully, polish it, learn from it, and then (my favorite acting word) NEXT. On to the next one.

Do You Believe In Magic? by Bob Fraser
(Originally published in Actors Ink)
There are basically two types of actors who read my stuff, study my computer-based course and come to my seminars: Working pros who are looking for ways to improve their acting income, and newer performers who are anxious to start making money at this. I think I attract those types of actors because they know that my entire focus is on the money-making part of being an actor. The success part. The show BUSINESS part. As my pal, Charlie Holliday, loves to say, "They don't call it show art!" And I do my best to provide good information for actors who want to make money in show business. But the fact of the matter is, I know the truth – and the truth is that the only actors who are really going to succeed in our business, are the ones who understand (probably before I begin one of my rants) that they must take effective action in order to see the fruition of their dreams. In other words, not to put too fine a point on things ... YOU HAVE TO WORK AT IT! I'm sorry for yelling, but that is a good piece of information. What brought on the yelling? Well, as you have probably gathered, I am a well-known recluse. I like being at home with my family, my bird (Boyd), my books, and my computers. But in the last month or so, I've been going out to see a few plays and participate in a couple of 'panels' – at various actors' gatherings. I don't know why I get invited to these things, as I am clearly anti-social and pretty much the working definition of a hermit – but I do get invited and I go, with my adorable wife, who comes along to gently remind me to be nice. Anyway, as a result of my recent forays into the real world, I have run into quite a few actors. Now, while it is sorta nice to be recognized (if you could call it that) – "Oh you're that guy who writes on Now Casting. What's his name?" – the problem is that I meet far too many actors who sadden me. There are a lot of actors out there who seem to be fully invested in the belief that there is a one-step method to show business success. "Can you introduce me to an agent who can help me? I'll thank you when I get my Oscar," is the most common conversational gambit. I try to point out that there is no golden ticket to get "in" – and that it's a waste of time to keep looking for one. But people don't listen. Frankly, it's frustrating to see our school system turning out so many educated people who still to believe in magic, wizards, lucky charms... and, just possibly, enchanted beans. This adult belief in a magical solution is probably the main stumbling block for those actors who are having a hard time of things. Especially those who continue to insist that their careers will 'happen' – somehow – as long as they believe it will and continue to intone that plaintive (but clearly magical) incantation ... "I want to be a working actor, I want to be a working actor." Not to mention those poor unfortunates who go to endless parties and spew out the all too common – "I'm an actor ... do you know any casting directors who will give me work? I know I can be a star, if someone would just give me a chance" – elevator speech. Don't they know that while they are in that 'mode,' they are just about as interesting as an Amway salesman at an orgy? The part that saddens is that I am certain that these actors – the sort who believe that there must be a secret passageway that leads directly to the red carpet ... and all they have to do is find someone to give them the key – are going to suffer a lot of frustration and disappointment, for a very long time. AND they are leaving themselves wide-open to the early onset of bitterness – which is a kind of mental cancer. Take my word for it – eventually bitterness metastasizes into regret, grief, anger and depression. My prescription? Throw away your magic beans! JUST. WORK. HARDER. It's not a good plan to lollygag around Hollywood, acting for free in Equity Waiver and student films – for years on end – hoping that the Wonderful Director of Oz will appear one day, in a sparkle of pixie dust, and discover you. Spend a lot more time looking for a paycheck for your performing and a lot less time schmoozing with adults who believe in magical chants, secret handshakes, bewitching potions, enchanted headshots or Staples' Magic Button. Please, oh please – do not continue to believe in fairy tales – because if you do … you will not live happily ever after. Which brings us to talent. Oh, that word! Shakespeare said, "Talent will out!" But what he did not add was "Talent will be well paid, respected and successful." (Because Willie was a sharp cookie and knew better.) Talent is a gift – and if you put it to use, it may pay the bills. The critical phrase is ... "IF you put it to use." Jennifer Hudson is on everyone's mind these days. Meteoric is a word they use. Has she got talent? Yes, by the truckload. But everyone is turning her bio into a Cinderella story, a fairy tale ... "first she lost on American Idol and all looked hopeless … but then she got a lucky break and went on to win the Oscar." The erroneous conclusion being drawn from Jennifer's story (and others like hers) is that her talent was 'discovered' and well rewarded … and that ours will be discovered and rewarded too. But did you know that about three years ago Jennifer was working on a Disney cruise ship – in a big heavy costume with five-inch heels and tons of make-up – belting out Disney ditties for a paycheck? The point is this: If a tremendously talented future Oscar winner can 'go on the road,' working on a cruise ship to earn money with her talent ... oh, never mind – I'm sure you get the point. Listen, after you throw away your magic beans, your next move is to stop wasting your time looking for a one step solution – and start looking for acting work that pays. ANY acting work that pays. That's the first step. That's putting your talent to use. Go on the road if you have to. GO. GO. TO. WORK. FOR. MONEY. And please don't invite me to anything – I'm staying home this month.

BY BREUSE HICKMAN FLORIDA TODAY For more than 10 years, Ted Chaski has been a part of the film industry -- and he's been able to call Brevard his home.
He might not be a household name. His most recent acting stints have found him behind the wheel driving a limousine or some sort of other vehicle. But that's not the point, he'll tell you.
Like many actors with a resume, Chaski will remind you of his big breaks -- like when he played an extra in "Armageddon" and in the television series "The Cape."
But he's just as proud of the times cinematographers have allowed him to look through their cameras.
The experience has lead him to direct, produce and complete his own film projects, discovering avenues he thought he never would.
His advice to anyone who wants to get into the business echoes that of many longtime Central Florida residents who have kept busy behind and in front of the camera: Network, and educate yourself.
Almost 30 years ago, Jim Lewis began Communications Concepts, which produces industrial training videos for local and national companies, along with entertainment features.
Lewis has had opportunities to go elsewhere but has chosen to stay in Brevard, which he calls "a tropical paradise."
Who wouldn't want to use Brevard as a scenic backdrop?
He's also up on growing film needs of businesses in Brevard.
"I think a lot of people, especially young filmmakers close their eyes to production interests in their own backyard," Lewis said. "Look at the fact that several of the hospitals have their own video departments. There's a lot of video production going on in places you might not expect."
Chaski has kept himself busy by learning where the needs are.
He may not have the means to fork over the tuition required to attend film school at Full Sail in Orlando. But he did take a few stunt classes because "lots of films require stunts."
Lo and behold he landed a stunt job on "National Lampoon's RoboCop," produced by Brevard filmmaker Doug Gordon and scheduled for a summer release.
"I've done so many things, but I always go for it," he said. "Anyone who wants to make it in the business, whether an actor or producer or director, has got to get on every movie set they can. You see how people work and how the business works."
His latest product is directing the full-length feature film "Canes," a fictional story about hurricanes engulfing Florida. In his effort to "keep it local," he enlisted the help of other local filmmakers and businesses, including Tightline Productions in Melbourne.
Connections
Space Coast Film Commission president Bonnie King -- who finds and secures locations for Hollywood and locally produced film projects -- said independent filmmakers have found more outlets, such as YouTube and Google. But independent films also have become larger in scale.
"Just look at some of the independent films that have done very well without a big studio name," King said. "Films like (Oscar-nominated) 'Little Miss Sunshine' made for very little money but then do quite well at the box office."
While no one would dare call Central Florida "Hollywood East" without risking guffaws and snickers, the industry here does have one thing in common with Hollywood: It's all about who you know.
Those who work behind the scenes say connections are a must if you want to get anywhere in the film business.
"You have to be willing to go where the jobs are," King said. "As with anything you love, your passion will take you there. It doesn't matter how much education or previous experience you have. You can never sit back and expect the work to come to you."
King also suggests joining networking groups such as the Florida Motion Picture and Television Association.
Not only are you likely to make connections locally, you might find yourself working on films with fellow members. "You quickly find it's a small world in the industry," she said.
"In Brevard, the film industry is about helping other people, because when you love what you do, you have fun along the way," King said. "Eventually, you'll find that people are opening doors for you and you may be opening doors for other people without knowing it."
Having made "little movies" since he was 11, Brevard filmmaker Anthony Azar has learned a thing or two about team work. Even gung-ho indie filmmakers who have "worked in every facet of movie making" such as himself need to enlist the help of others to see projects through.
Since moving to Brevard, he has had several films appear in the Melbourne Independent Film Festival.
He's finally gotten a steady crew together that he can trust to put together his dream movie: a full-length feature called "The Cops Did It."
You might call him a guerilla filmmaker.
He's been known to post flyers around coffeehouses and eateries inviting others who share his dream to join him on his movie sets.
Sometimes his sets are in his backyard. The Lazy Dog Saloon, with its landmark pillars on the corner of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Highland Avenue sufficed for the outside of a courthouse.
"Sometimes I do a lot of tight shots to compensate, but it works," Azar said. "Sometimes, the movies are so low budget that I barely have enough money left to get tape. But we work with what we've got. And we are happy with the quality we get."
Know your goals
As the saying goes, one thing leads to another. But some filmmakers say it helps if you are specific about where you want to go.
Scott duPont discovered that while opportunities for actors to work in corporate training videos were plentiful in Central Florida, "I knew if I really wanted to take control of my acting career I needed to make my own movies."
A short list of training videos he's produced and appeared in over the years include "Women on Men," a dating video" and "The ABCs of acting." Lions Gate films recently released "The Bros." which duPont produced.
Projects get done, he says, by finding investors willing to take risks. Filming on his latest project "Ticket Trouble" which he describes as a modern day, low budget "Deliverance" starts in April.
Indian Harbour Beach resident Chip Rohlke's is serving as executive producer of the project, but Rohlke's role isn't limited to forking over wads of cash.
Like many people in the Central Florida movie industry, Rohlke has donned many hats where he's gotten experience behind and in front of the camera.
He hopes all of his experience eventually will lead him to achieve a very specific goal.
"I want to create my own Christian film company," he said. "I've always wanted to make a film based on (the classic) 'Pilgrim's Progress.' "
As Hollywood has embraced similar religious allegories such as "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," Rohlke can hear opportunity knocking.
"No one has done a screen adaptation of 'Pilgrim's Progress,' and it's perfect for the screen. It's waiting to be made. And I want to be the one to do it."

What to do When an Agent Asks for Money
"My name is Rachael and I am a senior in high school. Recently, I heard about the Wilhelmina Scouting Network. This is an online site where agents, producers, directors and other industry people can search for models and actors. I had an interview with one of their representatives and I was called back because they wanted to work with me. The only thing is, it costs $995. What should I do?"
Rachel: Put away your checkbook and run like mad.
"Never," acting instructor Reed Kalisher wrote, "ever pay an agent any money, under any circumstances, for representation, screening, photographic services or even a class. The only thing an agent is entitled to is a percentage of your pay as a commission for work procured with the assistance of that agent." Memorize this advice.
Coach Robert Keniston agreed. "Agents and casting directors barely have enough time to read their own mail. Do you think they have time to look online when getting hundreds of submissions a day via snail mail? Market yourself to the agents that interest you."
So if you want an agent, get some training and a great headshot, take classes, network, audition, book roles, and work continuously. There are no shortcuts.
If you are just starting out, you should read up on the business and learn how to avoid mistakes such as this and how to turn a love of acting into a career on the stage or in film. A great place to start is by reading my book, How to Become a Successful Actor:

TOP TEN TIPS FOR SUCCEEDING AS AN ACTOR 1. Understand the Industry
Before you enter it, become an expert on the acting and entertainment industry. Read twenty books on the business of acting, talk to dozens of actors and meet with as many people in the industry as possible (directors, producers, agents, editors, grips, stage managers, etc.). Pick their brains. Take notes. Send thank you cards. Interview a working actor with a career you'd like to one day have. Ask them to share their roadmap with you. Study it. With this knowledge you'll have fewer surprises and disappointments down the road. 2. Manage Your Expectations
Remember that your chances of becoming a star are extremely small. You may be able to make a living after years of training and hard work, but 99.99% of all actors are unknown and unburdened with paparazzi and plenitude. If your goal is to win an Oscar, you will most likely find disappointment. However, if your goal is simply to act, fascinating audiences with your ability to bring characters to life, working among a community of fellow artists, then there is little to stop you. All you need is a bit of talent, and a huge helping of persistence, flexibility, and hard work. 3. Get TrainingStudy at a university with a good drama program. In addition to acting, take courses in literature, psychology, history and philosophy. A broad liberal arts background will provide you with more tools and a broader palette from which to paint your portraits. Never stop training. Take a few classes every year to address your weaknesses (auditioning, camera work, stage combat) or to improve skills that will increase your strength, awareness, or psychological well-being (yoga, aikido, dance are all good bets). 4. Get Awesome Headshots
Headshots are your primary means of getting work - don't rush or skimp on them. That doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune; it's more important to find a photographer who can bring out your best qualities. Great headshot photographers will take time to get to know you, identify your type, and give you lots of options. Job-winning headshots are bursting with personality. 5. Get Practice
Don't wait for the perfect role or the big gig: get out and act. The most successful actors I know are continuously searching for and working on various projects. In addition to improving your abilities, working consistently keeps you on directors' and agents' radar and increases the number of people you'll meet. And work leads to more work. Finally, don't be afraid to take on projects that aren't perfectly interesting or which don't pay well (or at all). Especially in the beginning of your career, you're better off acting than not. Remember that you can learn something from every acting experience, no matter how dismal. 6. Network
As in all industries, personal connections play an important role in progress. Agents and directors work with those actors that they know, like, and trust. So make sure people know you, and earn their respect. You can accomplish this by always being professional and positive. Many people don't like the idea of "networking" because it feels impersonal and false. Think of it as building a community of people who can support you in your aspirations. And you can support them. The more advocates you have out there, they more work you'll be offered. 7. Be Positive
People like to be around those with a positive outlook. So don't be grumpy, especially on set or backstage. Don't bring personal problems to your job. Not only will the project be more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved, but you'll almost certainly do better work. And nothing helps get recommendations down the road than being remembered as a person who was a joy to work with. 8. Never Stop Learning
Great actors are insatiably curious. They are full of wonder at the world and the people who inhabit it. They ask questions, they listen, they read, they watch plays and films and great television. And even more important, they watch themselves. In all these activities, they take notes and reflect, constantly honing their craft. 9. Know Your TypeIt's natural to want to try new characters and normal to fear being typecast. However, especially in the beginning of your career, it is important to know your type. It will determine the feel of your headshot and the roles you initially aim for. It's best to get advice from an experienced actor or casting agent as to what your type could be. I've heard of actors who asked strangers on the street: "What job do you think I do?" That can give you an objective idea of what your look is (heartthrob, funny guy, young dad). Of course, this doesn't mean that you can't break free from your type, just that you understand your place in the market. You should also realize that while most stars are quite attractive, there are actually many more acting jobs for average or even quirky looking people. 10. Know Success When You Have It
If you work for five years at becoming an actor, one day you may wake up to find that you're consistently acting. A student film here, a "downtown" play there. A commercial every now and then (you were called in at the last moment because someone remembered you from that student film), and maybe a one-woman show at your corner club. You're doing work that you love, you're doing what you do best, and you're part of a community. You're a successful actor. Don't fall into the trap of feeling like a failure because you don't make millions or aren't in constant demand for big city tours. Appreciate the fact that you are doing what you love. Very few people can claim that. BONUS TIP: Take the Next Step
Many actors never become successful because they never take the first step. They are afraid or too busy, so they only dream. Others stagnate in their careers because they don't know how to get to the next level. ---------------------------------------------------------- "Actor Tips" is copyright 2005 by Chad Gracia and ActorTips.com, Inc.
