Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

What's your age, where from, web site you want people to refer to, upcoming show or album?

I'm 24, and I was
raised in North Denver, the so called "highlands". I grew up in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood, and I was smaller than most of my peers, and pale with red hair so I stuck out like a sore thumb, and I was bullied pretty incessantly. I was raised by my mother. My father lived nearby but I didn't know him well and he was abusive and had substance abuse issues. He taught me quite a bit about being myself though. he showed me and the other kids around the neighborhood how to make wooded swords and things like that and there would be these epic medieval battles in the alleys behind the house.

as for a website www.myspace.com/oscify and www.sprucegooserecords.com are good ones
my next show will be with my band Magnificent Wingspan and is at Hodi's Halfnote on August 9th with Mr. Dibbs & One Be Lo.
This week I finished mastering an album called "Breathe Easy Soon" and it will be available for free at www.sprucegooserecords.com and in stores by the time this article presses. Its a very important album to me personally because its a farewell to the lenses through which I used to view life. It's a mix of pop-songs, introspective songs, funny songs and weird songs, and I think its also an expansion on what a hip hop album can be artistically and what it means to create so-called conscious hip-hop.

-Why "Dr. Oscify?" What does it mean, how did you come up with it?

when I was in high school I had the rap name, "the lyrical miracle" (horrible, I know), and one day when I was working the go kart track at this mini golf place, the idea of Doctor Oscify came to me... at the time I knew that ossified was 1920's slang for getting drunk, but i later learned that ossification is the process of cartilege hardening into bone. So the thing is, when we're first born, all of our bones are cartilege, and its only after we die that the cartilege deteriorates leaving nothing left but bone, so this ossification is a process that spans a human's entire physical existence. my personal philosophy on life goes something like that, you know, never being complete until after death... the Doctor prefix is partially a homage to Dr. Dre, and Dr. Octagon, and partially formed in the idea that an entertainer can also be shaman. lengthy explanation, but its the truth..

-I heard about you from David and I noticed that you have worked with other artists too- do you prefer solo work or collaborations? Why?

I would have to say that I enjoy both solo work and collaborative work equally. I love that in my solo material I have final say in every aspect of the music, but often I find that to truly realize my creative vision, I require the assistance of other artists. I can't for example, play the saxophone although I may write a piece of music with that instrument in mind. On the other hand, true creative collaboration can be amazing because of the way the energies of different perspectives play off of eachother. I am a rather prolific artist, and I'm grateful that I don't have to choose one over the other.

-Tell me about your come up- that is, how did you first get into music, why hip hop, are you doing what you want to be doing or do you have big dreams of Hollywood status?

some of my earliest memories are of myself with an ear up against a speaker larger than myself listening to KTCL and KBCO in the eighties. as a little kid, I was always formulating lymrics and short songs and when I was 12 or so I began jotting songs down in notebooks I had. they ranged from hard rock to ska to rap and punk and were all pretty awful. when I was 14 I picked up a guitar and never looked back. I was in punk and metal bands throughout high school, singing and playing guitar and bass, and at the same time I was recording these low tech songs on a four track tape recorder. all kinds of stuff, rap, industrial type stuff and I also did recordings of some of the bands I was in. After I graduated, the girl I was dating kept asking me to do more rap stuff and so I started to really focus on honing the craft. Over the next few years I made it my mission to learn everything there was to know about about making rap music, from rhyme structures and patterns to how to make the beats. My freshman year of college I ate some psychedelic mushrooms which completely reshifted my view of what kind of music I wanted to make, but for me, hip-hop fit into this new paradigm. I felt like I could do anything with hip hop from telling stories, to deconstructing reality to just blowing some steam off. during my junior year of college an indie label form detroit approched me about doing an album, and during the course of recording this album, I realized that my purpose was to create music, not get a history degree. I dropped out and the record didn't quite do what i'd expected. for a while I felt as though all was lost, but I kept recording and performing. Since then I've produced a plethora of material that I'm quite proud of.

As for the future, I do have some rather ambitious goals. In as 2009 rolls into 2010, I plan on expanding my audience tenfold through internet marketing, college radio, and word of mouth. In 2010, I plan on performing live around the country both as a touring act and at various festivals. Hollywood? Truthfully I do hope to act in movies and such in the future, and at the moment I am developing a reality show with my longtime collaborator Skimp Killah. (sort of a comedy documentary thing)

-Do you have a day job- what is it?

I don't have a day job. My last job was at walmart in the produce department but I was fired for talking too much on the phone... to my spruce goose records compatriats. Oh well, one door closes... for a few months now I've been working fulltime for Spruce Goose Records. Its a somewhat new company so everyone's kind of doing what they can in whatever capacity they can, but my role is largely artist development and production. sort of an A&R on steroids but the idea is to ensure that our product is going through a set of filters so that when it comes out on the other side its the best thing it can possibly be. We started as a hip hop label, but the long term goal is to form something like a new Motown, where artists are nurtured into maturity and we use all production available to create a phenomenal product fun stuff, indeed

-I saw a lot of your artwork on Myspace- how does that tie into your music or your hustle in general?

when I was in grade school, I was somewhat of a prodigy with visual art. I'm talking about a skill far beyond my years. But the only thing I ever heard from adults in my life was to focus on math and shit, and that artists can't make any money in the real world, and that I should give it up. By the time I got into music as a teenager, visual art had become secondary, and I was putting less and less effort into it because of what adults in my life had told me. I rarely do any visual art now and I don't particularly miss it, probably because I have music as a creative outlet. It's funny how so many told me I couldn't be an artist, and... I'm still an artist. I can't help it, and without art I have no doubt I wouldn't be alive today.

-Where will you be in 10 years, realistically?

well, that's a good question, could be anyone's guess.. my best answer is, see the answer below.

-Where will you be in 10 years if everything you want to happen does?

I will be a household name. I will nurture young artists to their full potential, and when I perform, it won't be mid level clubs and bars, but large venues and stadiums. I will have contributing to expanding our existential paradigm, and I will be a trailblazer in creating new forms of entertainment. I will appear in films, produce records, paint, ski, sing and write and play guitars basses, pianos, etc, and have a great time. I will have a big enormous house with a pool and a hot tub and a whole bunch of other ameneties that I will throw some killer parties at for all my friends. I will travel the world, go on vacation when I want to where I want to, and I'm hoping the luxury wont cause me to start making bland sucky art.

-What did you want to be as a kid?

When I was a kid I wanted to be a football player, a running back. but when I went to tryouts in high school I was by far the smallest kid there... so no go on that. I also wanted to design cars, become the president, vastly improve national infrastructure, and have a super hero alter ego that was like spider man but with all the cool gadgets batman has. I also wanted to write a comic strip.

-Tell me what you think/how you feel about hip hop in a couple sentences.

Hip hop is a genre in a world that has far too many genres. I might continue to make what some would call hip-hop, but I have just as much affection for  folk music and reggea and rock  and country and jazz and on and on. I love rhythm and poetry (R.A.P.), but all music contains at least a little bit of that. Hip Hop is beautiful, but to me it is very small. I feel like music is very hemmed in right now and is looking for a way to escape out of the box. I am including the independents and the giants. Folks need to get a bit more creative.

-Anything else you would like to add...

Thank you very much for interviewing me and maybe it would be cool to do a Spruce Goose Records piece at some point... cause I love those folks...

Current mood:  handsome
Hey guys I know its been a while since I checked in, and I thought I'd let you know what I've been up to lately. As some of you know last year was a crazy time for me and I wasn't able to get much of anything done, but with the help of friends and family, things are looking better than ever for this year and we've got much good news in the near future.

First of all my old ass computer is on the fast track to the grave and if I don't finish the music on it in a timely matter it will all be lost forever. So here's what I'm finishing up this month:

Doctor Oscify - Breathe Easy Soon LP

This is my newest project and early reviews are semi-ecstatic. It is an introspective piece with some club pretensions leaning towards a new generation of psychedelic popular music. It is for the lovers and dreamers and navel gazers among us, and its also a departure from the boom bap and rhythm and blues based delivery which launched my career. The guest artists on this album are the finest collection of singers, writers, producers, and instrumentalists I have ever had the pleasure working with and unlike some of my past work, the sound quality is stellar. I just finished mixing the single and I can't wait to share it with you.

Magnificent WIngspan - The Prophecy of the Condor & the Eagle LP

Two years in the making, this album is your basic guide to hedonism in the era of apocalypse. Using a form of musical method acting, AllPointsBeyond and I drank ourselves into semi insanity during the months we recorded to create the unbalanced perspectives on life, art, philosophy and the universe that you will hear on this album. With Dj Deadbeat Dominic using two turntables to his mind bending advantage, and production from myself, Skimp Killah, Es-K, and Ulliversal, plus vocal appearances from Skimp Killah, Diebolic, & David Ochoa, "The Prophecy of the Condor & the Eagle" is what people will be calling, "a certified hip-hop classic".

The Purple Elks - Present the Heartbreak Kids

Limbo: The grittiest most intelligent funniest rapper who can sing pure sweet soul, and me, whatever the heck I am, have spent the last four months on an album to make your mouth water: pure lyrical hip-hop about everything from true love to heartbreak and betrayal and all the little things in between with the kind of beats that will make you wet yourself and the kind of hooks that make ladies and gentlemen want to dirty dance with one another whenever they play.

So thats what I'm up to this month and I'll bringing more updates very soon, but for now I need to get to work on some music. So I'll talk to you all in a few days.

Love ya

Sunday, December 14, 2008

A lot of you have been asking when I'm coming out with my next album even though "Self Portrait in Progress" just dropped in May. The answer is "Breathe Easy Soon Mixtape" coming soon. Please give me a chance to tell you a little more about it.

"Breathe Easy Soon" is essentially an audio documentary I have made about my transition from existence as an unknown unpaid  artist to a dude who takes his business a little more seriously. This album covers some of the harder moments in my last year and a half, and also focuses on the brighter and better days as well as the beautiful times ahead. Ultimately, this is an album about triumph. It is about triumph over adversities, worst fears, and maybe even a few personal traits within my power to change. This is an album about forgiveness and also an album about being forgiven. It has been influenced by all of my previous work as well as a few amazing artists who have forced me work harder and more carefully for this record to be what it was truly intended to be. Anyway, I don't want to give to much away, but I hope you all are looking forward to its release as much as I am

Cheers!

Why John Mccain is on the Wrong Side Of History

by Leo Fairbanks

Who does John Mccain think he is? Seriously. He has no plan for the future and Rome is burning, yet he refuses to cede this ground and admit his wrongheadedness. There may have been a time in the distant past when John Mccain was a man of honor but that man is horrifically non-existent these days. After his half-hazard summer of irrelevant attack ad's, endless policy flip flops, and choice of Sarah Palin for vice president all became horrible embarassments, plus three debates handily lost, I'd have thought he was ready to give up his pathetic campaign and halfhearted limp to the finish after early voting gives Barack Obama a solid majority and unsurmountable electoral victory.

Unfortunately, in the face of these obstacles, John Mccain has decided to go the fear route. A day before the third debate, John Mccains stomach turning VP pick, Sarah Palin, decided to raise a new and increasingly ugly line of attack. She suggested that Barack Obama pals around with terrorists and mentioned the long known connection to William Ayers a former member of the revolutionary students group, The Weathermen, who attempted some now well known attempts to disrupt things during the 1960's and 70's which we all know was a period of great social upheaval.

In spite of this, great gains were made in the 1960's. The Civil Rights act and Voting Rights act were passed as well as the Federal Anti-Discrimination act. Oh, and here's another 1960's program: Affirmative Action. I'm not trying to distract you from what I'm saying with all this, but I'm saying that John Mccain grew up with a different perspective. He was a conservative, and he didn't support any of the things mentioned above. The only thing he would do for the Democratic President Lyndon Johnson was in the Vietnam War, a failed conflict that ended with the death of 100,000 United States Servicemen. It was also a complete strategic failure.

Mccain had been left in a dingy horribly uncomfortable jail cell during this time. His arms and hands were badly broken and he also spent some time in solitary confinement. An unimaginable experience for most of us. During a conflict which was by all measures a complete flop. Mccain seemed to justify this by saying the conflict was somehow winnable. Which you might notice is what he's saying about Iraq. Iraq isn't winnable, and we haven't achieved any meaningful objectives there except to enrich a few contractors with company ties to the White House.

To make things worse, Iraq's instability tilted the once non-threatening Iran into a position of disturbing power. Iraq, sharing a border with Iran had kept some of the threats Iran might have posed well at bay. Now Iranian soldiers are arming Iraqis hoping to create an Iran friendly government and essentially double the size of Iran.

Now, can anyone think of a reason why invading Iraq was such a terrible idea?

Such is the legacy of John Mccain. He may in his heart truly believe he's putting country first but he's always been on the wrong side of history. Unfortunately for him Jim Crow can't last forever, and the things most of us value, things like good schools, safe and well kept infrastructure, Social Security aren't things he believes in. I can't say I blame him. He's led a very sheltered life, and for most of his adulthood he's lived the life of a Billionare. He can't understand you if you're not on that level. Especially if you're not his age and not on that level. His entire presence on the stage is a disgusting anachronism, a relic from times gone by when Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, and George Wallace were considered acceptable by the public.

This is a history we shouldn't repeat. And honestly I don't think we will. Everything is going the way of political upstart, Barack Obama as he proved right again and again, on issue after issue. To top it off, most of America find him to be a likable competent candidate, which has become such a rarity its impossible to ignore especially when the other ticket is a complete atrocity.

To attempt to comeback from its continuous series of misses, John Mccain has decided to play the game in a very dirty, disturbing, unforgivable way. To John Mccain, a fake controversy over a widely respected intellectual who happens to have a radical past and happens to be acquainted with the Democratic candidate for president, is now an acceptable line of attack.

This while the economy is in a historic free fall stasis, and much of the middle class is feeling the bottom dropout. If things continue, foodbanks might become as inadequate as the the deregulated investment banks John Mccain has financial ties to. His answers on questions of the economy are laughable at best, and dangerous to the point of our government collapsing at worst. And I don't think most of you want your government collapsing.

Mccain has never even seen the middle class. Both he and his runningmate own personal airplanes, multiple houses and more than 20 cars combined. This is a life most of us have ever lived, and we are not insulated from crisis the way they are. That is why we have utterly repudiate these disgusting attacks. Soon after Sarah Palin began her disgusting rant about Obama's ties to "terrorists" (1960's liberal radicals), the crowd turned more violent.

One crowd member yelled that Obama was a terrorist. Another called for him to be killed. Today a crowd member was heard to shout, "Off with his head!" as Mccain discussed Obama's tax plan. John Mccain has been feeding a ugly viral flame that began with some of the actions of Senator Hillary Clinton. I think it would be fair that she shared the blame should such unpleasantness cause Obama to lose the election.

People, listen.

There is a very bad side of America coming on display right now that I am honestly scared by. There are people who think they can turn this into a race war or a holy war, and they are willing to spill blood. This genie was brought out even further today as a Mccain surrogate brought up Barack Obama's past drug use and called him "a man from the street". This is some of the worst innuendo we've seen, certainly the worst since Bush VS. Dukakis in 1988.

We can not let this side of America prevail. It's won quite a lot in the last few years and if John Mccain becomes president it will win a lot more. It's not just that I disagree with his viewpoint. It's that he's always been on the wrong side of history his entire life. He's failed as a public servant, and no longer appears to have a moral compass. We can't afford that.

I'm sorry for focusing so much on the bad in here, but I think its time we said goodbye to that phase in our history. We really do have the capacity to change and grow both as individuals and as a society. So let's take this opportunity and grow. It will be good for all of us and we'll feel better too. I guaruntee it.

Hip-hop futurists Phunny Pharm (AllPointsBeyond on vocals and 12 string guitar, Sono on vocals and production, & Ghish also of Acies Mine providing visual art) have just released a brand new album called Stolen Symphony and as expected, its a definite classic.

The album includes feature appearances by Moss of Livest Vibe and Doctor Oscify. To make things even better, they've decided to make this album completely free to download for the moment. Magnificent Wingspan would never have existed without the trailblazing of Phunny Pharm, and to honor one of the great groups of the last few years, we'll give you the download link right here:

By Leo Fairbanks

When it comes down to it, I think guilt is really just as destructive as denial. The truth is, although we are citizens, many of whom vote, we are not individually responsible for the actions of our government. Of course, in a collective sense we as a society have allowed these things to happen, but I think to equate that with a sense of guilt is inherently unfair to one's self. It is similar to claiming all Germans in the 1930's who did not actively resist were implicitly endorsing the actions of their government. Of course, as you and I know, it is very difficult to find the courage much less the means to truly take an effective stand against a structure that is systemically totalitarian, as I would argue much of our governing body is.

In my opinion, if the war were in our homeland, public opinion would be definitively opposed to the war while simultaneously supporting efforts to escalate it as much as possible. Certainly the Iraqi's, and not our own government, would be blamed for the conflict regardless of the root cause or the righteousness of our government's actions.

The bottom line is, unless we can collectively re-imagine what means to live in a global society, wars will definitely continue until we extinguish ourselves. Not a future I personally want, but something in human nature is certainly hungry for some sort of conflict. I think our man Obama is on the right track with proposals for improving education and economic circumstance, but it will be a difficult task since much of our country celebrates stupidity and business interests are categorically opposed to anything that improves the lot of the working public (basically any reform at all towards a more equitable system). What these business interests don't seem to realize is that the very survival of society is dependent on an at least marginally supportive safety net for those most vulnerable.

of course, only 79 years after the Great Depression and the ensuing New Deal, much of this safety net has been rudely eroded, we are now in a similar situation to the business caused tragedy that we swore would not happen again.

The other problem which could possibly further excaberate our current downturn is the fact that the dispensing of propaganda has been widely advanced in its methods in the years since The Great Depression. At that time union membership among workers was rising, and pamphlets and worker funded news sources allowed for a much greater awareness of the need for an effective safety net for workers and those without work. Propaganda was, of course, still a powerful tool then, with radio broadcasting and large newspapers at work, but with the widespread advent of television in the 1950's, the government and business funded network for propaganda was immensely expanded (often they are the same people anyway).

Obviously, this propaganda function is the primary purpose of FOX News, but none of the of the other networks are innocent either. Intentionally or not (I say intentionally), our television news media is there to serve the interests of government and large business. Like I said before, its all really one disgusting entity.

This propaganda function is of course why our news media report heavily on trivial issues such as how a candidate dresses, the music played at his or her events and other seemingly unimportant facts while happily ignoring developments in Iraq or actual policies put forward by candidates. Its not just a matter of reporting what sells. Its a matter of intentionally discarding important facts to create a newer, less analyzed, and less infuriating reality. This may be a bold statement but it seems to me that the primary function of the majority of news media in our country is to prevent uprising over policies and actions which are markedly unfair to the public.

Of course, with the advent of the internet, information is being democratized in many circles. Public discussion can suddenly occur between private parties all over the world. The internet contains a bevy of shocking misinformation, some of which even finds its way to the mainstream news media, but such are the perils of unfettered free speech.

There are, as it stands, a few problems with the internet. One is that computers are an expensive tool. This leaves many who are unable to afford them out of the discussions which take place there. Although many libraries and other public institutions provide free internet access, time limits are often imposed and many who access the internet through said institutions are not going to make accessing accurate current events information their primary priority.

Another issue with the internet is that access itself is limited in most locales to those pay private providers for service. Although there are a few cities where free internet access is becoming more common, much of it is still provided by private entities which adds yet another economic hurdle to those at the lower end of the financial scale.

These 2 issues alone are likely to limit a true dialogue on the internet, although as its been said the internet is one of the greatest tools for democratization created thus far.

I may have digressed. Let me back up a bit. First some disclosure on my personal beliefs: I don't believe that representative government works. Personally, I believe the most effective way to create a functional democracy is direct democracy. Not just electing officials. Actually voting on bills and initiatives, locally and nationally as it were. Yes, I believe certain freedoms (like the one's in our constitution) should be protected no matter what. I also believe no one should be incarcerated for any non-violent crime (with certain pathologically motivated crimes exempt perhaps). Certainly anything that doesn't fall under the realm of being a public safety issue should not be punished with jail. Beyond that I believe we as a populace should be able to make any decision we want regarding our own destiny. It is, after all, our country.

Majority rule has, of course been shown in the past to contain flaws. With that said, true direct democracy has never been tried before in any sort of broad based modern society. So why do I think it would work?

When the populace has a say in how the things around them are actually run, there is far more of an incentive to actually know the pros and cons related to an issue and to honestly vote based on such rational considerations. Let's not pretend for a second that such empowerment is a means to a utopia or any other foolish pipe dream as that. What it would really be is an opportunity to run our (that's right OUR) institutions in a way which is truly beneficial to the general public.

So do I believe in private property? Well, I believe in private property as far as belongings in one's home, and of course I believe a person should have a right to pursue any career he or she so chooses. When it comes to natural resources, such as water, land holdings, and oil, I feel that technically those can't really be owned as they are already held by the earth, but while we are here, we should be able to "lease" them, so to speak, but not as individuals; as a society as a whole. Necessities for societal living such as food, water, shelter, and electricity are used by all, and therefore should be held by the public, not private profit seeking entities. Less vital interests, such as communications networks might still be effectively privately held, but even with such entities as these, I think the public, a specialized work force, would be able to effectively handle the job.

Let's be clear: I am not talking about communism, certainly not in the Leninist sense, although I feel Marx may have agreed with many of these points.

Moreover, what I'm referring to is direct democracy and any conceivable policy decision beyond that would be a by-product of said principles. Personally, I would guess many private entities, especially those which concern basic necessities, would be nationalized within a few years, due to a better informed public acting in interest of the common good. And as Noam Chomsky has mentioned, any corporate charter can be legally revoked, so its not inconceivable that a well informed empowered public would do this.

So is direct democracy possible in America? Strong public support would be a positive first step, which could come with a greater knowledge of how such a system might function. Again, I'm not a proponent of doing away with private property that doesn't involve our basic human needs, and I suspect the majority of the populace would agree with this contention. When we think of the recent debates over offshore oil drilling, for instance, its easy to see that this proposal is widely supported because of the perception that this would be OUR oil.  And from a national soveirgnty standpoint, that is true it is OUR oil. Not Exxon's. Not Chevron's. OURS. Even in our highly convoluted society this should not be in dispute. If the debate was termed as being over giving oil companies more money instead of being over drilling here in America, public opinion would in no way support the action. Such is beauty of what a true direct democracy could be capable of.

It does get confusing in that private companies have built much of our infrastructure on fronts such as these, and the infrastructure itself could still be reasonably argued to be within the sphere of influence of the private entity. Fine. As for the natural resource itself? That belongs to us. Most of the oil being drilled in the United States is drilled on public land (again I think all land is technically public, but I'm not going to press the issue) which means in the most basic sense, this resource is ours anyway. I think its fair to pay a company back for the effort involved in resource extraction, but for the resource itself? HELL NO. The resource was ours to begin with.

Another digression. Back to direct democracy. With popular public support of such an idea would come limited political support. And I am referring to popular support, not just a good standing in polls, but an energized and motivated public willing to promote such an idea. Since this doesn't technically fall under the category of revolution so much as it does reform, its an easier pill to get folks to swallow, especially once the facts and arguments are presented. Its basically a variation of getting rid of the electoral college and then one upping the whole idea. With exception of infrastructure arguments, there's not too many ways that representative government is a better or more effective system. Those who call for increased civic engagement, here is your chance. Time to engage.

Once the public as a whole begins to loudly demand what we should have had in the first place government will have to listen. Especially if the demands aren't taking place in the form of any sort of violence. If a million people go to Washington to peacefully demand the right to vote on his or her destiny, any violent response by our government will look cowardly and disgusting. In addition, there are a lot more plain clothes citizens in our country than there are enforcers. And most enforcers if presented the facts would probably agree with our position.

Political power is a twisted and poisonous force. It cause those who have to believe they are superior decision makers. This is not the case. Many of them, regardless of original intentions are simply ambitious to accrue some sort of status in this society. Others are misguided and ill informed about their own "righteousness". It is for this reason that to truly create a more equitable nation, we need to work towards a true direct democracy. This project may be many years in the making, but it has a potential to happen very quickly if we let it.

To again reference the internet: remember the people who said Wikipedia would be full of misinformation because of the fact ANYONE is allowed to edit the volume? As it turns out, Wikipedia is now widely regarded as being equally as accurate as any published encyclopedia. To top it off, Wikipedia has a heck of a lot more information and is updated quite a bit more frequently. It might seem silly compare this to a system of government, but i really don't think it is.

In conclusion, thanks for reading this and if you agree please pass it on. Also if you have any editing suggestions, please let me know (Ala Wikipedia). This isn't a joke. I'm dead serious. Let's get some direct democracy in our lives.
