Dear Ms. Lee,
Below are my synopsis on this summer YDC programme. I would love to hear and/or get feedback on from other facilitors of this project. I think the dialog created with these synopsis is invaluable to our work as mentors/teachers and to our community as a whole.
Many thanks for the experience.

Maui's YDC programme Synopsis:
In replying to UNESCO email in asking for my experience in running this International multimedia project locally in your hometowns (MAUI), difficulties you have encountered and overcome, lessons learnt... my reply would be:
I am "SHAME" (a local term often used by Maui's youth) to give any reply about Maui, as a technologically and culturally supportive community. But since Mauis youths was selected as one of the Top Ten Finalists of ZeroOne| UNESCO "Scenes and Sounds of My City" multimedia presentation, I am more hopeful to the possibility of this community now has in their youths. For me, the lesson learnt is still revealing it self. The importance of this project, from a communal perspective, has only showcased handful syntonic beings that have helped us made this project possible.
As to the technological challenges, there was very little challenge in practicing a digital multimedia project like YDC's Scenes and Sounds of My City. With the current advent of new media tools and applications, our litmus study of applying 23 of Maui youths (ages 9-14) and their creative expressions via the digital suite of applications was of great success. Based on the youths final multimedia presentations and limited timeline, has showcased their use of the medium and its applications; combined with their curiosity for play, created an array of digital expressions as if they were using different color crayons. This study truly gives me hope in crossing the digital divide, as far as, digital art is concern; since the tools needs to be as simple as crayons to equalize the playing field. Of course, using "FUN" as the motivation and intention never hurts the learning and creative process.
From a creative process and development of our ZeroOne | Unesco project, it has been a PURE JOY to reveal the essence of our home city, MAUI. In igniting our youth's sense of awareness via their creativity and imagination, I have truly seen the many blessings of Maui through our children's eyes.
In hindsight, there are many processes that I wished I could have had the time to include in their creative developments. With hopes to better understanding them through their multiple intelligences and via multimedia. The goals are to have more awareness of our environment and the community via "the perspective of our youths; through their creativity, imagination and curiosity. I think with the right sensitivity we can help evolve our city; its cultural awareness and the social welfare of a community; not to mention a more holistic processes that can empower the youth's acute sense of being, their natural reflection of their surroundings and nature. This can be very powerful tool for a healthy community, to nurture the youths multiple intelligences and to better understand the awareness from this "love generation"; the real messages of ones community future.
I chose the song "love generation" in our final presentation DVD, not be contrive as to state that these pre-teens of 2006 are the "love generation"; but to rather to reveal my epiphany from this project that there is a love generation in every generation. Its in the love generation in our youths, their natural essences and untainted views; combined with their unconditional love towards the moment's passion, reveals their messages through the multiple intelligences of multimedia and the metaphors of art. This can be very powerful! With the advent of currently digital technology, simplifying usability to this age group and lowering the bars, so they can access their creative potential and reflect their sense of identity is of great value.

Dearest teachers, mentors and educators,
First thank you so much for the enormous support you have given to the UNESCO Young Digital Creators programme. We are so excited to have your students come to San Jose and to be able to further demonstrate their creative potential within a professional media arts community. As you can see in the programme agenda included in the Handbook that Adrian has sent to you, there will be a UNESCO screening event on 13 August (11:00-13:00, Sunday) with the participation of, of course, our global youth ambassadors and teachers, educators coming different parts of the world. I believe it would be a great opportunity to raise the voices of the young participants through this occasion, who unfortunately will not be able to join us in San Jose. If you could give me some general feedback on your experience in running this project locally in your hometowns, difficulties you have encountered and overcome, lessons learnt, the major challenges of practising a digital multimedia project like this, why the creative aspect in the project is so important. Have you really sensed the global community behind the project? I would also highly appreciate some frank and straightforward comments from your side, including your opinion on how we should improve in the future, points that were critically lacking in the process, what kind of support is most crucial, etc. Those comments and recommendations will surely be shared with the global community in San Jose! In addition if you have any photo shots of your group working on the project, either going on field trips or brainstorming in groups, it would be featured during the festival as well. Thank you in advance for sending your valuable feedback at your earliest convenience.
Warmest regards, Doyun

Dear Participants
Good news: your presentation has been selected as one of the 10 finest works of this Young Digital Creators, Scenes and Sounds of my City session. Consequently, you will select one of the students from your group. This student will be officially invited by ISEA 2006, to go to the International Symposium on Electronic Arts in San Jose, California (USA), from 6 to 13 of August 2006. Here are some indications for you to follow. Keep in mind that there isn't much time ! 1. We highly recommand that the selected student is a senior student. The flight and the accomodation in San Jose will be totally covered by ISEA 2006, but the student will have to fly alone. Once in California, from the airport, someone will accompany the students all the time; they'll never be alone. This journey will consequently be at your own risk. Atatched to this email, you will found some important documents. Please, read them and send them back, duely filled, as soon as possible. Most important, the document to be filled by the parents. As we said, the student will travel alone from his or home country to USA. If someone from the family wants to come to acompany, this is possible. But it will be at their own cost. 2. Please, as soon as the group selected the one who'll travel to California, send us full datas about him or her. Full name, age (senior if possible), so that ISEA 2006 can send immediately an invitation letter. The student MUST have a passport. if none of them have one, make sure they can obtain one quickly. You will have to ask for a Tourist Visa at the American embassy or consulate of your country. Send us also full data and contact of this american embassy or consulate. Again, please reply as quickly as possible. Congratulations ! Kindly yours Adrian CALVO-VALDERRAMA, UNESCO Moderator

Today has been a hell of a day for us, because of the last things to do for the presentations, and helping you with yours took us a lot of our time. We felt tha tit would be a pity for your group not to have the chance to be included, yet we had trouble with all your registration. This is the best we can do for you. We have been working 2 hours on it with the intern, Ananda. But I really don't think you should worry about that. I've been looking at your pictures and hearing your sound file, and I must confess it is great, maybe one of the greatest work we got, because of all the efforts you did. your presentation is now on the Art Gallery of the Scenes and Sounds of my City server (unesco.sjsu.edu), so that everyone can see it. Have a look at the other groups's work also. I'll present your work tomorrow in the morning to the rest of the team. Again, don't worry about it not being perfect as you wanted it to be! It's not perfect, but kinda close! Kindly yours Adrian CV
