So it’s been a minute since I’ve been here... writing that is. Articles, newsletters, my book... everything! So when I say it’s been a minute - I really do mean it’s been a minute! Why? Well life comes at you fast and unlike the nationwide commercials, in real life things do not just suddenly just fall into place when the 30 second commercial ends.

I don’t know if you’re like me but it seems that 2008 (even thought it was supposed to be great) got off to a really rocky start.  Professionally, I had some break throughs and personally, I had some break downs. When the world is going at 100 miles per hour, and your life is going at 200 miles per hour what do you do? You catch up and move forward...

I spoke to my friend Les Brown recently and he told me I sounded ill. I’ll refrain from the words he used, it wasn’t any profanity or anything like that but it was personal. We talked very briefly about the situation and he told me to "grow" through it and learn from the process. WOW...

I consider Les Brown "the great motivator", and while I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him outside of hearing one of the many speeches and presentations that he does, I am still always in awe at how he can just say one thing to you, in a certain way that lets you know he cares, makes you feel special and lets you know that someone understands. I also took from that conversation that this too, what I was going through, was part of the learning process and that it was an opportunity for me to grow as a person. And trust me... I have and still am growing as a person and will continue to grow from this experience. If you’re reading this, I’m not sure if you’re going through something today but if you are guess what? You too can learn from it and move on.

So when life comes at you fast, like the great motivator Les Brown says, "don’t try to get through it, grow through it." And when it’s all said and done you’ll notice that you are wiser, smarter and stronger from the experience!

Remember: Tomorrow is not promised so live each day with purpose & passion!

"The more you seek security, the less of it you will have. And the more you pursue opportunity, the more security you will achieve." Brian Tracy

I talk to people all the time who tell me that want to start a business or leave their job because they either hate what they do, are just plain ole' miserable or both. Even though they despise where they work and what they do, for some reason they are still too afraid to leave! Their reasoning as to why is they believe, somehow, that they have security. Well, if you think you've got job security just ask some of these folks who, after working at major corporations for 15-20 years and were suddenly laid off, if there's any such thing as job security. You'll quickly find that the answer is no.

When you really think about it, nothing in life comes with out a risk… after all when you wake up in the morning and walk out your door you are taking a risk. Everything you do comes with some level of "risk" but I guess in the end you have to decide if the "risk" is worth the "reward".

This week I was presented with an awesome opportunity. One that seemed… well too good to be true honestly! It was everything I have wanted and wished for and without looking for it… it found me. Because we are still in negotiations I can't go into many details but I can tell you this… I almost passed it up. Why? There's a lot… no, make that a ton of risk involved but the reward… well let's just say it's priceless.

While contemplating this opportunity, I had a really good friend tell me that "I needed to decide if this was what I really wanted for myself and if so then I needed to take action and move forward with confidence." I coach people on how to live successful lives and how to have anything they want by just going after it and this friend had to put me in my place by telling me "don't preach what you don't practice".

Wow! The nerve of him! Who does he think he is! But guess what… he was right.

See, sometimes we are so hell-bent on "not rocking the boat" or preserving what we have because we feel "secure". If you do this enough times you will get to a point that you are no longer willing to gamble on yourself and what you believe and know in your heart is your calling, and ultimately your true destiny…

This opportunity will literally change my life and ultimately the life of my family. So if it all works out… well then it's the best decision I've ever made and if not… well I guess it just doesn't. But there's one thing I do know for certain and that is I will know, without any doubt that I moved forward with conviction and that I have lived my life with no regrets…

I guess when you really look at it the same thing applies to everything you do in life. Like in business, I mean sometimes your risks are calculated but in most cases they are not. Even when you have the best laid out business plan that details out the who, what, when and why… you can still fail because nothing in life is guaranteed.

For all of the business ventures I have started, some have done well while others have failed miserably. Sometimes things sound great on paper but do not work in the real world. There are also times that you start something that works for a while and then suddenly, it slows down or even worse – it stops altogether. Unfortunately, that's one of the joys of being a business owner and it's also part of life! Just like in life, with a business you will have ups and downs but the important thing to do is to keep going and not give up.

When I think back to when I first started out, I wasn't necessarily seeking security…. I was seeking an opportunity to control my own destiny. As I get older, I now find myself seeking security however; I still don't want to miss out on opportunity.

I guess that being said – that's the true makings of an entrepreneur. The only difference is I now know that when it's all said and done you can get the security that you so desire. Perhaps not financial security but you'll be free from care, anxiety, or doubt because you'll know that you took a gamble and played the game… knowing that you only live once. And most of all you can feel confident in your mind that your fear did not cause you to miss out on the "opportunity" of a lifetime.

"Never Let The Fear Of Striking Out Keep You From Playing The Game." Unknown

January 30, 2008 - Wednesday

With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, we often find ourselves yearning for a quieter, more balanced life. If your life has come to resemble an endless race to the finish line, take a look at the suggestions below to bring a greater sense of peace, calm and even simplicity back into your life.

Tip 1: Manage Your Time Better

Having effective time management skills will allow you to spend more time with your family and friends. Not great with time management? Then here are a few steps to help you improve your skills:

- Prioritize your time by rating tasks in the order of importance and urgency

then direct additional time to activities that are most meaningful to you.

- Deal with procrastination by using a day planner, breaking large projects

into smaller ones, and setting short-term deadlines.

- Keep a record of how you spend your time, including work, family, and

leisure and make adjustments accordingly.

-  Save time by focusing, concentrating, and realizing when it's time to

delegate responsibilities to others.

- Don't over or under commit yourself or commit to anything that's not

important to you.

Tip 2: Learn Healthy Coping Strategies

Living a balanced life means that it's important to learn healthy coping strategies. We all get overwhelmed from time to time so we need to know how to deal with stress and issues as they arise. One way to do this is by recording stressful events, your reaction to it, and how you could have reacted in a journal.

Using this information, you can change unhealthy coping strategies into healthy ones. This will help you focus on the positive and what you can change or control in your life.

Tip 3: Evaluate Your Lifestyle

You may not realize this but in most instances our behavior and lifestyle choices greatly affect whether or not our life is balanced. To get things into perspective examine your beliefs to reduce conflict between the life you believe you live and the life you really live.

This does not bring balance directly to your life, but it can interfere with the way your body deals with stress in edition to other issues. If your perception is different from your reality try to:

- Balance your personal, work, and family needs according with your other

obligations.

- Get to know yourself by spending some quality time with 'you'. This will

help you to find your sense of purpose in life.

- Don't drink or smoke and make sure you get enough sleep.  These are

major stressors to your body and cause you to feel "out of balance".

- Yes your doctor was right - You need moderate exercise several times a

week and a balanced diet for a physical and mental strength. Think about

it… how do you feel after you eat a big mac? Enough said!

- Do something for someone else and expect nothing in return. This will help

boost your "feel good" endorphins!

Tip 4: Have A Support System In Place

Sometimes we need someone to talk to and having a support system in place keeps you balanced because you know you have someone to turn to. Having a positive support system in place is like having "mental security." You know that you are cared for, loved, esteemed, and valued by those you care for the most. If you don't have a support system in place the best place to start is to look within your family, friends, church and the community. Research indicates that having social support leads to having better mental and physical health and a better overall quality of life.

Tip 5: Change Your Thinking

When an event triggers negative thoughts, this may cause you to feel out of balance.  Usually when this happens you experience fear, insecurity, anxiety, depression, rage, guilt, and a sense of worthlessness or powerlessness. These are all emotions that trigger your mind and body to disconnect and cause you to react instead of act.

When issues such as these come up the best way to get your self back into a safe zone, where you feel you are in control is change your way of thinking and act (not react) on the problem. To change your way of thinking start by:

- Ridding your mind of any irrational thoughts. This will help you avoid

exaggerating the negative thought, anticipating the worst, interpreting an

event incorrectly, and will eliminate unnecessary stress.

- Learning to solve your problems by identifying all aspects of the issue.

Then instead of putting it off find ways to deal with it immediately.

- Changing your communication style so that you communicate in a way that

makes your views known without making others feel put down, hostile, or

intimidated. Poor communication causes a lot of issues that otherwise would

never have surfaced.

By implementing a few of these tips you may also increase your performance and productivity which in the end will help reduce your stress and allow you to focus on what matters most to you: Living.

Living a simpler life is all about learning how to slow down and connect more deeply with your inner self.  Whether you do that by simplifying your surroundings, calming your schedule or enjoying a quiet respite each day, the result is the same – a happier, balanced, and more peaceful you!

If only self improvement advice were free and scattered around everywhere, then there will be no problem regarding life, happiness and success. But then again, this is life and it simply does not work that way.

What would you do if you were trapped in an environment that you did not want to be in?

What if you were sick and tired of your job?

If this is you, then what can you do to solve this dilemma?

It is possible to take inspired and motivated action to survive your present situation and live the life you always dreamed of.

It's not going to be easy though... you'll  have to come out of your comfort zone to discover your potential and opportunities that are awaiting you.  You'll have to conquer your fear and take both calculated and uncalculated risks. You have to stay focused and persevere despite the difficulties you will encounter...

Success does not come easy.  It takes heart, passion, time and oh yeah, don't forget  - experience is also a factor. The learning you get from everyday life becomes your foundation. These are the things we do not need to pay for - just work for.

You'll have to work harder, dig deeper, and sacrifice more to attain your ambitions. But in the process you do not have to hate the world and feel bad when you encounter difficult situation.  Just remember the Law of Attraction. If you hate the world, the world will hate you back. If you love the world, the world will love you right back!

So getting back to the question...

What can you do? Below is some free advice to help you face the difficult situations in your life. They will also serve as your guide to improve yourself.

1. Learn to love your current situation, see all the positive sides of life and be enthusiastic.  Love your boss, your coworkers, your family, your friends, and even strangers that you meet on the streets.

It may not be easy, but nothing is impossible with a strong will power. Just do not fall in love so much in love with your current situation that you totally forget about your dreams. Love, but try to hold on to reality.

2. Balance is the key.  Dream and take some positive action to move you toward your goals and take it one step at a time.

While you are slowly starting on the long journey to success, be patient and be as enthusiastic as possible.  Do not hurry up too much that you totally forget how to enjoy life. Appreciate the beautiful things you will encounter on the journey.

One day, you will finally attain what you have always longed for.  And when that day comes, do not look down on those who belittled you. Forgive, forget, move on.

3. Stay humble.  Do not criticize others when you see that you are becoming more successful than they are. Try to help them.  Inject your positive aura into their personalities.  When you give, you will yield back equal or greater rewards.

4. Are you ready to begin the journey?  Start it with the courage and desire to improve your life. Survive and go through it with persistence, enthusiasm, and positive thinking.  Finish it with a resounding bang of accomplishment and with the desire to help others succeed as well.

I can give you tons of advice on things you can implement into your life that will help you improve yourself and change your life. The important thing to remember is that whatever is going on in your life, you are not alone. There are others in much more difficult situations so even thought it may seem like it's easier to complain when you really think about it it's much more easy to just be grateful.

Become Your Own Personal

CFO Budgets and personal finances are not most people's favorite topics, and certainly not one of mine. Most bank executives even have problems in this area, and if you're an entrepreneur then more than likely you probably do too! It's not that you don't care or anything. It's just that you're probably concentrating so much on your business that your personal checkbook takes a back seat. Then one day you are met with the startling fact that you're not saving enough for lean times and you panic. Then what?

Well, just apply your professional talents to the situation and become your own persona l CFO! By focusing your 'CFO' eyes on the situation, it somehow tempers the pain of dealing with your own money. Marketing Your Business Online

If you're not already marketing your business online, then it's time to start! Although there are a few exceptions, just about every business can benefit from online marketing. There are just so many advantages to this type of marketing that I'm not really sure where to begin. I'll just start by jumping right in...

Let me start by first saying that it's extremely affordable to market your business online, I guess that's the main benefit. Other advantages to marketing your business online include the ability to reach a large target audience, the ability to reach potential customers all over the world and the ability to customize the marketing for different sectors of the target audience.

Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Investing

One of the questions that I get asked more than any other by investors who are just getting started is "if I had the chance to start over again, knowing what I know now, what would I do differently"?

Since it's come up so often and it's such a great question I decided that I would sum up some of the things I wish I knew back in 1995 when I first got started in real estate investing. Hopefully it will save you some time and shave your learning curve too! Here's my in-dept response to this question:

January 15, 2008 - Tuesday

Current mood:  tired
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

It's 5:30 am in the morning and I haven't had any sleep. My mind kept racing, thinking, planning and then I realized... I was basically working. At 4:30 am I decided that I may as well get some of these "things" in my head put on paper because sometimes this is when some of my greatest thoughts or articles emerge.

The reason why I could not sleep is because I have ten million things I am working on and I just recently got over the flu ad really still do not feel all that great. I'm running behind, not on schedule and chances are I will not be able to keep several appointments this week. I'm tired, sleepy, frustrated and basically exhusted. And all I could think about was could I have done anything while I was sick that would have helped me not get so far behind. Did I really need the rest? Was I really that sick? What could I have done just a little bit differently...

Has that ever happened to you? Do you ever stop and think to yourself if you had done something different that you would have had a different outcome? Well of course you do. Everyone does. I did last night and it cost me a night's sleep. I think it's normal to contemplate and play the 'what if' game and even thought I sometimes wonder what would have happen had I done some things differently, under normal circumstances I don't ponder on it much because I truly believe that everything happens for a reason.

As I sat in bed this information came flooding to my head so I wanted to share with you, my friends so here we go...

Everything that you have done up until now has happened for a specific reason. Where you were born.  What school you went to. All of the decisions that you have made. It all happened for a reason. Think for a moment had you done something differently in your life what the outcome would have been. Everyone always thinks of the positive things that could have happened. For example, perhaps if you had went to graduate school you would be earning more money. Perhaps if you had not taken the first job you were offered when you graduated from college you would be further along in your career. Perhaps if you had only put in a few more hours, you would have gotten the promotion that was given to someone else. Well, perhaps this is all true but do you ever stop to think what would not have happened had your life taken those turns?

If you went to graduate school perhaps you would be making more money but it would have been in a field that you didn't like. If you didn't take that first job you would have never met your spouse who worked down the hall and gotten married. If you would have put in a few more hours to get the promotion you may have missed the birth of your first child. The 'what if' game can go on forever but the reality is everything and I do mean everything happens for a reason.

I think it's best to use each situation as a learning block. If you make a mistake, try hard not to make that same mistake again. If you do something in life that you regret, if you're still alive you have the opportunity to right your wrong. If you have failed to accomplish a goal by a certain date then change the date and keep pushing forward. At the end of the day when it's all said and done, no one can go back and change time. No one can undo something that has been done. The only thing that you can do is create a future for yourself that is better than your past. It's important to remember that something you did in your past laid out the stepping stones and foundation for your future. Be it good or bad it in your best interest to make the best of it. No one can control what happened in their past but everyone can control what happens in their future!

Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

How many times have you made it up in your mind that it was finally time to pursue your dreams or to accomplish something that you have wanted to do for a very long time only to come up against mounds of discouragement from friends and family? Perhaps you finally had it made up in your mind that it was time to start your own business and quit your job, only to have your friends and family tell you "you'd better not!"

And even though you knew you'd be walking away form a nice salary, and all the major perks and benefits, you felt in your heart that it was the right thing to do… but in the end you didn't.  Why? You allowed negative people to get a hold to you and allowed them to hold you back from pursuing your dreams. How do you correct problems like this? You must purge these individuals from your life!

Purging negative people in your life is a must if you plan to really live your best life. You have to learn how to listen to your own inner voice, step out on faith and move in the direction that you want to head in. In addition to getting rid of negative people, it's also important to put your plan in writing.

"Thoughts in your head are only wishes. Thoughts written down on paper are goals and eventually become reality! " Pam Lawhorne

Once you have your goals and dreams in writing, you will need to ask yourself several difficult questions.

Why do I feel the need to accomplish these goals?

What do I need to do to make them come true?

Are my goals reasonable and attainable?

Do I have a definite, set time frame in which I want to accomplish them?

How will my life be better if I am successful in reaching these goals?

Will I have more money?

More time?

A new house?

A new car?

In the end, will my life be what I want and expect it to be?

You'll find that by writing out and evaluating your goals and dreams that they suddenly seem more tangible. This is the beginning of developing your plan of action. Take each goal individually, along with an estimated time that you believe it will take you to complete it and put it in chronological order. Start by typing up or neatly writing out a checklist. Make sure to put a box next to each items so that once they are complete you can check it off of your list.

Next set up what I call a "dream board" (this is a picture of mine below). On your dream board put pictures of all of the things that you desire to accomplish or take possession of. Gather up pictures, travel brochures, magazine articles or whatever you can find to symbolize the things you will have accomplished upon completion of your goals. Arrange these items on a large sheet of construction paper or poster board and you can use your plan of action as the center. As you can see mine is on a cork board, nothing fancy. But I need a larger one because my dreams have grown quite a bit!

Hang your dream board above your desk or in any other highly visible place where you will have to see it often (I have mine in my office so I can see it when I work). Refer to this board frequently to help keep you on track.

Before you officially start your day, look at your dream board and remind yourself of why you're doing what you do. Close your eyes and picture yourself enjoying the items pictured in your board. You should do this as many times as possible throughout the day but at least once in the morning for five to ten minutes.

You will find that your mind will start to embrace your dreams and it will move you into action. You'll then begin to speak the dream, and live the dream. And ultimately you will have accomplished all of your dreams!

"Dream big and think big because there's no dream too big that you can't grow into!" Pam Lawhorne

If you've ever been stuck in a tedious rut before, you probably know the sense of helpless futility that takes over your life.  You want your life to change, but you feel powerless to do anything about it yourself. You may find yourself constantly making plans to improve your life, but never quite get around to taking action because it seems so intimidating. Does this sound like someone you know or is this someone you?

I know that taking action may intimidate and frighten you but guess what? It can also empower you!  If you learn to use it effectively, it can provide the fuel you need to keep moving forward toward your goals, hopes and dreams.  When you do this, you'll realize that there was never anything to fear in the first place, and you'll never get stuck again!

Below are three simple steps that show you how to get started:

1) You must first understand that your life is the way it is right now because of your hesitation in taking action!  This is very important, because once you get this you'll understand the importance of moving forward no matter how anxious it may make you feel in the beginning.

Then, decide on one action to take to get the ball rolling.  Think about your life right now, and ask yourself which situations you want to change first.  You might choose your career, relationships, health, financial situation, or anything else that makes you feel powerless and stuck.  Then think about one simple action you can take to inspire some positive change.  It doesn't have to be a huge action, just SOMETHING to start building momentum.

2) Once you've decided on your action step, you must then push yourself to take it no matter what!  This may seem incredibly difficult or even scary, but remember that most often the things you fear are not going to happen.  In fact, you may not even have a clear reason for feeling scared, you're simply afraid of the "unknown".  Give yourself a pep talk and push yourself in any way you have to in order to move forward at least a little bit.  After you take that first step, be sure to let go of any expectations of what will happen because of it. And make sure you allow yourself to feel great simply because you did something about it!

3) Repeat with the same step, and/or others over and over again.  Once you've taken one step forward, you'll need to keep pushing yourself to take others.  Consider this:  Even if you take a hundred small steps in a month, you'll be putting forth positive effort to make changes in your life, which cannot help but bring about better circumstances!

The great news is that taking action quickly begins to build momentum.  Just as chronic non-action can create a cycle of negativity and stagnation over time, being proactive can create a positive cycle that continues to grow!  And trust me, it gets easier the more you do it. Eventually it will seem almost effortless and once it does you can continue to empower and strengthen yourself with every step you take. Got it? Then get going!

To Your Success!

At some point in all of our lives, we all dream of being someone big... someone special, right? When you were in high school did you fantasize about being the one who made the game-winning touch down? Or perhaps maybe your dream was to become the homecoming queen? And how many times have you dreamed of being rich, powerful, and successful? Or maybe you just want to find the perfect spouse or find happiness within your relationship. Well guess what? You're not alone!

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that - dreams! And our aspirations... now that's an even bigger problem because they just collect dust in the attic of our minds.

This of course turns out to be a sad turn of events in our life because instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing! If anyone understand what I mean then can I please get an AMEN?

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher. That's right I said it! Perhaps the problem is not the goal you're set but instead it's your determination to achieve it.

The most common problem people have when setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking "I can't do this. I can't do that. It's too hard. It's impossible..."

Well guess what? That's simply not true. If everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment. As a matter of fact, you would not be reading this right now!

Remember when scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee? Theoretically, they "said", it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. You know big body, and small wings that would not support its weight. Fortunately for the bumble bee no one told him he could not fly so guess what? He flies!

You see if you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible.

Now on the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you'll find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header write down things 'you know you can do'. Under another header, write the things 'you might be able to do.' And under one more, list the things that that are 'impossible for you to do.'

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things 'you know you can do'. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header starting with the one that reads 'you might be able to do.'

Now, since you have accomplished all of the items you wrote under things 'you know you can do', you can move the goals that are under things that are 'impossible for you to do' to the list of things 'you might be able to do' and move the items from that list to the 'you know you can do list'. Follow me?

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all. You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little.

For example, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would have laughed at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities!

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer! For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But please note that the 1% has to be a think big dream, and not something that can be easily accomplished.

Ask any fitness expert and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, "No pain, no gain"? That's as true as it can be.

So dream big my friend! Don't get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

"Dream big and think big because there's no dream too big that you can't grow into!" Pam Lawhorne
