I just saw a commercial for American Express Open.  It took me a minute to identify the song they used.  Spinal Tap.  They used "Give Me Some Money."  A joke song by a fake band.  Being used by a financial institution.  Either some Amex people have very good senses of humor, and assume the same about the audience, or they have none, and again assume the same.  No matter what, Christopher Guest is laughing harder than anyone.  Twenty years after they made the film, he's doing VW commercials and Tap songs are in credit card ads.  I want to make an iconic mock-rockumentary and whore myself out across the decades.  Oh, and also be successful and rich.  That would be another perk.

I can't really even express how great this video is.  The song is mediocre at best, but the video…I'll post both the video and the link where I found it.  It explains that it's really those guys.  Good to see they're willing to laugh at themselves.  Or they're all out-of-work actors with no self esteem.  It's the same for me either way.

First of all, here is a short video featuring Michael Cera of Arrested Development fame (with a cameo by Martin Starr).  I have no idea where it's from, or if it's just a fun little short.  Cera, by the way, will star in a Judd Apatow-Seth Rogen movie this summer.  And he kind of looks like Beck now.
Also, Kausfiles links to a nice little story about John McCain.  This is just one more reason I would prefer Rudy Giuliani to McCain if Republicans would like to take the less conservative route with the 2008 Presidential nomination.  Giuliani wouldn't be my choice, of course; my ideal candidates would be Gingrich and Brownback, but that ticket would be hard to get elected, even against a campaign nightmare like Hillary Clinton or the all-sizzle-and-no-steak Obama.  I like McCain as a person, but I do not want to see him get the GOP nom.

Thirdly...this is just funny.

Finally, I would have been more upset about how crappy the Chiefs looked last night if I hadn't expected it.  I mean, this is what Herm Edwards does: he is a poor man's Marty Schottenheimer.  That characterization may be a little less insulting in a month or so, since the Chargers are clearly the team to beat.  Heck, if Tony la Rusa can win a World Series (scoring eight unearned runs in the process), Marty can win a Super Bowl.

So who should play Ohio State in the BCS championship game?  USC played their way out of it, and thankfully so.  They never deserved that number two position anyway.  Lots of people are down on the idea of a Ohio St-Michigan rematch, but I don't think that's fair.  UM has the least damaging loss of anyone.  Wisconsin is a one-loss team, too, but lacks a signature victory.  The same applies to undefeated Boise State.  In fact, the only team that was ranked at the end of the season that Wisconsin played beat them.  Florida played a heck of a schedule, and the Auburn game was closer than the 10-point differential.  Louisville won a better-than-expected Big East, but I don't think they have a claim against the big boys.  I think I'm rooting for Florida to get the nod, just because I assume Michigan would then go to the Rose Bowl and pound on USC.  I don't know if Florida would get a different BCS bowl bid if it's not in the national championship.  Anyway, here's how it breaks down (with all rankings based on the BCS):

BCS Rank

Loss

Key Wins

Ohio St

1

None

#3 Michigan, at #19 Texas

Michigan

3

At #1 Ohio St

At #10 Notre Dame, #7 Wisconsin

Florida

4

At #11 Auburn

At #16 Tenn, #5 LSU, #9 Arkansas

Louisville

6

At #13 Rutgers

#15 W Virginia

Wisconsin

7

At #3 Michigan

Penn St.

Boise State

8

None

#25Hawaii, #24 Oregon St

Frankly, I think Michigan should get their shot on a neutral site.  They played a tough schedule and had the best loss.  The "they already had their shot" argument doesn't hold water for me because I really want to know how that game would have gone if it hadn't been at the Horseshoe.  Of course, if they get the rematch, we'll hear another month of "the SEC is punished for being too good!"  Whatever.  Of course there needs to be a playoff, but that's not happening any time soon.

Watching the Dark Crystal could pretty well do both, actually.  Here is a couple of web finds for you: first, the 50 greatest 80's commercials.  Sure, I believe you when you say you'll only watch the first five.  See you in half an hour.
An always entertaining (and disturbing) conversation to have is who the most attractive Disney character is.  I always go with Belle, for a couple of reasons.  First, she has that hair fall down in her face all the time.  I can't explain why I like that, but it does something for me.  She also seems equally comfortable when she's a simple country girl and when she's the "belle" of the ball.  Additionally, I'm not sure if the con listed here is really a negative for me.

First, the Microsoft Zune comes out, and the ipod has some real competition.  Then I see BG on Charlie Rose, and he comes off looking like the kind of guy who could build himself into the $46.5 billion man.  And now, I see this on MSN: the first five episodes of Arrested Development, with the rest of the series on the way.  Rock, rock on.

One note: it only works with IE, which is crappy, but also made by MS.  So we'll just deal with it.

So I'm pretty sure that Pam Beesly is the only fictional character I've ever had a crush on.  Which is kind of odd, really, because there are lots of good female characters out there.  But I don't think I've ever actually had a crush on any of them.  Not Lindsay Weir, not Lenina Crowne, not even Elaine Benes.  Probably because none of them called "This is Spinal Tap" their all-time favorite movie.
The real appeal of Jenna is that she is both cute and hot, which is quite uncommon, and therefore quite appealing.  She has a quality of wholesome innocence about her that matches her girl next door-pretty face and the dressed-down, plain-Jane attainability of her character.  And then you see her in Jane magazine and, like she says in "A Girl's Guide to Summer," her butt is like pow!  Also, she is from Missouri, and I am from Missouri.  She went to Truman State, which I have forgiven lots of other people for doing, so why not her?  Heck, she even played for Catholic Charities on Celebrity Poker Showdown, which I like, even though I'm a Protestant, because Catholic Charities probably does more good worldwide than any other organization.  So in summation, I like Jenna Fischer.
You know who I don't like?  James Gunn.  That guy is a...child molester.  Yeah.  I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows this kid, and the kid said he touched him in his bathing suit area*.  Probably a bunch of times.  If I were married to that sicko, I would call the police and divorce him immediately.  And then I would come running into my arms for comfort and support.  Remember, Jenna, I'm here for you.

*These accusations have not been confirmed.  But screw him.

Hi.  I have a myspace page and, therefore, a blog.  And you are going to read it, and you are going to like it.  So there.
Perhaps you are asking yourself, "Self, why did he name his myspace 'popconservative?'  And why do I refer to myself as 'self,' and not my name?"  Well, I think I can sum it up best with a dialogue from the popular television series "South Park" (*putting hands under armpits*):

Gerald:[Kyle arrives] Well? What do you think, Kyle?
Kyle:Dad? Don't you think our last new house is big enough?
Gerald:Well, this one is BIGGER!
Kyle:Tomorrow's trial, Everyone vs. Everyone, is gonna make things a lot worse! We have to stop it!
Gerald:[kneels] Kyle, let me explain something to you.
Kyle:[annoyed, looks askance] Hoh God, here we go.
Gerald:You see, Kyle, we live in a liberal, democratic society. And Democrats make sexual harassment laws. These laws tell us what we can and can't say in the workplace. And what we can and can't do in the workplace.
Kyle:Isn't that fascism?
Gerald:No, because we don't call it fascism. Do you understand?
Kyle:Do you?
Gerald:[rises] Just look at how big this house is, Kyle. Just look at it.

So there you go.  I like pop culture.  I find pop art to be just as relevant as "true" art.  And I am a conservative.  So you might say that I'm a, that's right, you guessed it, "pop conservative."  (Nodding head with smarmy grin)  Of course, I'm not sure that the term pop conservative actually means anything.  But it will once I'm done having my way with this here internet....
