Our music player is back on line, so feel free to add our music, send to your pals or just play them over and over trying to figure out the words.
Also, here is another review of the album, from the Event Guide. How Come everybody's downing on Blackberry Slow Jam? It's my favourite song on the album. :
Queen Kong / You’re Only Massive – Dot Dash. www.myspace.com/qk The pairing of Cork’s Queen Kong with Waterford’s You’re Only Massive is one that’s been on the cards for a while now – the two regional bands have played numerous gigs together, both been based in Berlin at different times, and are firm fixtures on the national DIY scene. However, although the two have much in common, there is a huge amount that differs too. You’re Only Massive trade in female-fronted/created electronic hip-hop - and rap with their natural accents intact, which lends a wonderfully authentic feel to their tracks. With lyrics like ‘You wanna touch my booty/You have to buy me money/If you wanna touch my booty’ (‘Booty’), it’s clear that You’re Only Massive trade in quirky, tongue-in-cheek lyrics – but they aren’t throwaway; they seem to be spurred not only by a sense of wanting to have fun, but wanting to make a social commentary too. However, there are times when the lyrics can feel a little childish, but given the young age of these two young women, there’s plenty of time for growth and maturity. Queen Kong are anything but hip hop – they could provide the soundtrack to a Berlin-based snuff movie. Dark, atmospheric, and influenced by everyone from GG Allin to Spiritualized, they could draw comparisons to the likes of Joy Division or even Ladytron. Lead singer Amy Stephenson possesses one of the most powerful voices on the Irish scene right now – strong, soulful and bewitching, her vocals on ‘The World is Yours’ are almost a reason in itself to get this album. There’s a huge amount of talent in the Queen Kong camp and they’ve been working extremely hard at evolving their sound over the past few years – and on this record, it shows. If anything, this also serves to show how You’re Only Massive are the less experienced band on this album – and it appears that the older band are certainly helping to foster You’re Only Massive’s work and giving them a platform as equals. The stand-out tracks on the album include ‘The World is Yours’, ‘DJ Pull Me Clear’, and ‘Lovers Do’ – but sadly, the one collaborative track on the album, ‘Blackberry Jam’, is one of the weaker tracks on the album. Some may find that the disparate feel of the tracks can be a little disconcerting, but it’s testament to both bands that in its own strange way, most of the time it works.

from today's Irish Times:
YOU'RE ONLY MASSIVE VS QUEEN KONG
Dot-Dash ****
Self-release
In the red corner, it's You're Only Massive, two lasses from Waterford who get their freak on with hip-hop and electro. In the blue corner, it's Queen Kong, Cork/Dublin musos with a grá for dark, tough sounds.
With such a line-up, the Dot-Dash collaboration might well have been a dog's dinner, but it all turns out rather smashing in the mix. What's remarkable is the sense of cohesion throughout. Instead of merely accentuating and amplifying each side's strengths, common currency is found in the smart melodies, top-drawer beats and relentless wash of strange, alluring sounds.
Both the collective's ambitious streak and a talent for hitting all the notes they're hearing in their heads are abundantly clear. From cheeky raps ( Do a Runner ) to perfectly realised sweeping grooves ( The World Is Yours ), Dot-Dash is light years ahead of what their peers are doing. www.myspace.com/youreonlymassive JIM CARROLL

(Ruby?) Moore's melodies are really 'classic'
Queen Kong V You're Only Massive
Dot-Dash (36:32)
Independent vinyl release
Here's a frighteningly exciting if strange prospect. Cork Berlinophiles Queen Kong, with their weird rock, and Waterford hip hop duo You're Only Massive (RIGHT), with their occasional party electro influence, have teamed up to make not a split album between bands, but a collaboration divided only by moods (one side "upbeat disco modern", the flip side "love songs and slow jams").
It takes a while to find a common thread between both acts, other than an endorsement of the avant-garde. Upon listening, that common thread reveals itself as an affection for beats, weirdness and, ultimately, melody. Dot-Dash' which could have been a disaster, delivers like no other Irish album has this year. It is just jammed with creativity, incredible vocal performances, smart raps, and inventive beats, sounds and rhythms, leaving you thankful that both groups came up with such a daring idea. Queen Kong's Amy Stephenson (LEFT) crowns the record with her irking and beautiful voice, most notably on 'The Rules' and 'Approximation', which also happens to be lyrically stunning, if peculiar ("The military lets you wear your own cosmetics / I wish I had a face like Samuel Beckett".) Every track is laden with surprises, from the urgent raps about shoplifting on 'Do A Runner' to the soaring Bond-like 'The World Is Yours'. Mixed continuously, Dot-Dash swerves around sounds expertly from hip hop to alt-rock, electro, indie and beyond, eventually becoming an eclectic and unusual entity of its own. One only wishes someone would throw a heap of cash at this record, to beef up the sound, and bulk up production values. With You're Only Massive's musical future hanging in the balance, Queen Kong should definitely maintain the direction in which they're going on Dot-Dash as it has yielded their best material ever. Recorded and produced in Dublin, Berlin, Waterford and Baltimore (US), Dot-Dash is a truly modern creation and one of the best Irish releases this year. It's hard to make the bizarre brilliant, but they've done it.

first review of the new record: sheena beaston said: Just received my copy in the mail yesterday direct from Queen Kong containing a whole slew of goodies, including their new project with You're Only Massive. The album, Dot Dash, is a collective mix of emotions, tempos and genres. Here's what Queen Kong has to say to clarify: - The record isn't a split between the bands, but between moods and tempos. The first side is upbeat disco moderne, the flip side is all love songs and slow jams. - Dot Dash is mixed continuously, so the party never dies. It will be released on 12-inch silver vinyl and as a download. I'd previously featured both artists before, and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this collaboration. It had me chomping at the bit, so much so, that I've been awake since 5:00am listening to it on repeat. So without further ado, track marks for Dot Dash. 1. Booty [2:10] As I was hoping and half expected, the album starts off with a bang, a total party player. And as you can imagine, booty is a synonym for your "back yard". Mixing the flows of You're Only Massive with Queen Kong's Amy Stephenson's haunting backing vocals and ambient "oh oh's", we think this is the perfect way to kick off the project. And even better. The continuous mix going straight into track 2 is something we like... Track Mark = B+ 2. The World is Yours [3:27] ...considering that the drums in The World is Yours have been a favorite of ours since we first got a listen of it. So the seamelss blending between the first 2 tracks is something we admire and enjoy equally. The fluctuating vocals and stressed guitar riffs are two highlights we just can't stop liking. Track Mark = A 3. The Rules [3:30] The Rules highlights Stephenson's vocals like no other track on this album. There's an incredibly likeable Shirley Manson quality to her tone and, in my book, that makes for a pleasurable listen. The arrangement on this track is simple and subtle, which is why it's one of my favorites on the disc. Lyrically pleasing and muscially intriguing, it's a must hear. Track Mark = A- 4. DJ Pull Me Clear [3:31] A constant trend I've noticed throughout listening to the whole album is the transfer of tempos, not only from track to track, but WITHIN each track as well. This goes for DJ Pull Me Clear as well. The middle section where it's nothing more than a heartbeat thump and whispers is impressive. Track Mark = B- 5. Do a Runner [3:27] Love the beginning of this song...it's like an epic national anthem. Lyrics that stick with me after only hearing them once are big for me. "Put the cheddar in the pocket / put the rest into the jacket / what do you do / do a runner". Track Mark = B- 6. Lovers Do [4:44] Around the 2:40 mark, the drums kick in with full force and at 2:55, a nifty quick drum beat got me excited. The song itself is decent. Can I absolutley love every track? I can try, but this one, as much as it pains me to say it, would be a little lower than the rest. Solid though. Track Mark = C+ 7. Here is Home [4:04] There's scratchy, crunchy, bending guitar riffs. A slick tempoed beat. Matching vocals on the chorus. Ambient sounds and just a whole lot going on. We kinda like the confusion we got going on here and it was an early favorite since we first heard it back on Track Mark = B- 8. Epidemic [3:44] "X X O / tic tac toe / home is just a place to go". There are so many good things I can say about this track. Between the lyrics of both the chorus and the verse, paired with an operatic backing vocal from Stephenson, we didn't think the track could get any better. And then towards the end, with all of about :20 seconds left, the track hit a key change that, quite honestly, gave me chills. Track Mark = A 9. Approximation [4:30] Oh, you know how to get to me. I don't know what it is about hand claps, but Approximation starts of strong with them. It starts off as a much slower tempoed song, with a stark verse section that is endearing, but then the chorus hits hard and it's a nice change of pace. And it's ready to rock. Track Mark = A- 10. Blackberry Slow Jam [3:30] Initially I wasn't sure what direction this was gonna take. But it's got a little bit of everything I love. Spoken word lyrics. Thumping drums. Horns. Harmonic vocals. A bit of the rapping over the singing towards the end. Provacative lyrics. If you throw out "Get up in my uterus" on a track, you've got me sold. Great way to end the album. Track Mark = A Overall, I can assure you that Dot Dash is an album that is both timely and relevant while being slightly ahead of it's time. In the same breath, I can say that there are many throwback qualities to it. Little intricacies scattered throughout are largely in part due to the production of QK's Dave Albarn and YOM's Maebh Cheasty. For more information on both artists, check out their sites here.

Our new record with You're Only Massive ,Dot Dash ,will be out soon ,so here's the rubdown:
*The record isn't a split between the bands, but between moods and tempos .
The first side is upbeat disco moderne ,the flip side is all love songs and Slow Jams.
*We started production in Berlin ,recorded more parts in Dublin ,then down to Waterford to track Megan's vocals ,then Claude Reigns mixed it all in Baltimore.
*Maebh 'n' Dave produced the record ,sort of like midwives,to continue this fertile analogy.
*Andrew Bushe from stooge-rockers Estel played drums on several tracks.
*Dot Dash is mixed continuously ,so the party never dies .It will be released on 12 Inch silver vinyl and as a download.
*Amy's vocals on this record have to be heard to be believed ,this record will confirm her as one of the top vocalists currently in the game .
*Hot Press cover girl Leanne Harte's guitar playing on the record is nothing short of electrifying.
*The horns featured throughout the record were arranged by Claude Reigns.
You can hear "The World is Yours" on our profile page,
and go to You're Only Massive's page to try out "Here is Home".

1) Other names considered for Queen Kong when the band was being formed: KGB, Gay Best Friend, Carry On Camping,Camp David,Party Blaster, Golden Hell, Best Friends, Barrier Method, the Dick Van Dykes, Broken English, Mint, the Lovelies, Gash, That's How They Caught Gary, Best Friends For Ever(This could have been viable,as BFFE gets graffitied a lot.). Now you know how much worse things could have turned out.
2) Number of Queen Kong songs where the title isn't mentioned in the lyrics:five(Bourgeois, Bloody Mama,David Bowie,Boot,7 Foot Giant)
3) Woman's World Top Tip :Never do a gig when the promoter's logo is bigger than any of the bands'. You won't come out of it happy. Apply this also to anything using the words "showcase" or "underground".
4) Number of Threads mentioning "Queen Kong" on Freakscene.com/forum:
5) Some of the bands Watchwords from it's original manifesto, published in 2002, include: No member is to ever be seen or photographed playing or even near a musical instrument. Never acknowledge the presence or existence of the audience. Only ever used electronic percussion. Snippets of Dialogue from films are the only words to be heard "spoken" on stage. No Chicks allowed in the band.
This manifesto has been revoked and reinstated several times over the years. We like manifestos.
6) The nearest thing we have to a real honest to god rock n roll story is when we were sitting around with We Should Be Dead after a gig, just chewing the cud talking about life in general, things were winding down when suddenly the TV no-one was watching filled up with their logo. Their video for "Forget Romance,Let's Dance" came on at 2 in the morning right after they had finished their set! everyone forgot about going to bed and scenes broke out kind of like pictures you see of footballers from the 70's celebrating in the jacuzzi after the FA Cup final. Not exactly Led Zepplin with the shark, but a lovely moment all the same.
