Current mood: sore
I do occasionally get away from the computer. Not very often but it does happen. This week has seen me working on getting my body into better shape (ugh) and getting back to something I adore...martial arts.
I've studied consistently with two teachers in my life and have had chances to study with others.
My first teacher was Sabonim Robert Clairday, of Clairday's Karate Studio in Hartselle, AL. I studied Tong Soo Do for a little over a year. I did choose to leave his studio. I felt that I was being promoted faster than I was actually ready for...and there was a lot of drama that was spilling over from other people in the studio.
From there I drifted for a bit. I thought about getting involved with another studio, but I allowed other parts of my life to become forefront.
Several years later things fell into place...as circumstances sometimes do. A coworker and I (working at Sears then) talked about martial arts, the different types, compare-contrast, and our mutual interest in learning. He made a deal with me. If he found a studio, would I go with him? Of course!!!
That led to my second teacher, Sifu Roger Hagood....the more influential of the two. My coworker and I were given the opportunity to .... "try out" for lack of better wording... and see if we would suit. We had one-on-one intro classes. After a couple of these Sifu would make a descision. If we met his requirements/standards we would be offered the opportunity to join the school and train in Southern Praying Mantis Kungfu. Both of us did. I wound up staying with the school longer as he went off to follow the military. That was my life for 3yrs or more. I would work during the day 5 to 6 days a week, then attend class 2 to 4 nights a week. I was luck as the school, the job, and my home were all in the same town (eventually). While I had the drive and opportunity I would attend classes Monday thru Thrusday for eventually 2hrs or more. (I was younger then) The school became an important part of my life and the guys became my "brothers". I left there on good terms. I became engaged and moved to Colorado to deal with a family emergency. My teacher went on to move to China and work on researching and publishing a book on chinese kungfu systems.
Again I drifted....
I came to a point were I joined a school under the leadership of Sigung J.T. Runes. I had only been going a couple of weeks when the world re-asserted itself. My father passed away....found by his neighbors day(s) after the fact. I was called home. As I was his only child I had to be there to plan and arrange the funeral, to attempt to pack up a house, and pay my last respects. After being Alabama for two weeks I returned to Colorado...with a lack of drive for anything. I let kungfu drift away.
Now, here I am again...3...4yrs later. I found a school that teaches Nothern Mantis. I'm trying it out. They offer a 30-day free trial. I'm seriously considering joining. It is a drive from home (almost 100 miles round trip). I have not done any serious working out in 7+ yrs. It's a bit painful to push. I'm not 19 or even 22 anymore. I've lost flexibility. I've damaged both shoulders in that period of time and still deal with it. I've gained 15 pounds in the past year (and gone up a size in pants...which s'cks). But it's an opportunity. I did love kungfu when I was in it before. In Alabama I would go late at night (when I couldn't sleep) and practice in the dark and empty studio. I would finally learn to handle my collection...instead of it collecting dust.
So..we shall see

Well, here we are. January 2009. All that's stopping the store now is the final thumbs-up from the credit card processor. As soon as Monday afternoon we could be accepting our first paying customer. It's been a blessing...and a headache...but it's worth it. We've gone through a complete overhaul of the store, reprogramming the shopping cart (3800 items at last count), setting up a working Yahoo group for the newsletter ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cauldron_keep_newsletter), discovering new vendors is unexpected places (like the woman selling handmade jewelry in her home's kitchen), and just a lot of learning experiences. We expanded from the original plan of 8 areas to 11 (with a couple more planned down the road). I'm working on adding more image files every time I turn around. I've been putting in 8 to 12 hrs a day on the computer (hence, the lack of appearences anywhere else). I'm keeping my fingers crossed and knees bent. Been lighting incense everyday..Hotie, Bast, Morrigan & Ganesh. Not always in that order. My cat has been guarding me, and occasionally distracting me. The dogs have begun to take naps in the two additional chairs down here in the office, while the newest addition (a halfway blind, partial deaf, seal point Siamese kitten) naps on one bookcase as Lexxy (my guardian cat) naps on the antique bookcase (her's being the privlege of age, size, and the only window). http://www.keeperofthecauldron.comhttp://www.keeperofthecauldron.com/drops_of_awen/index.php

This is to let you know that Senior peaefully journeyed onward at 6:13am on April 9th. He was supported in his finally moment by the FireGod. It was as quietly gentle as one could have wanted. He asked to but turned onto his right side so he could look out the window to the west toward the mountains and sky. He settled, quietly closed his eyes, drew 3 or 4 breaths more in this world, then mved on to his next.
His shell was farwelled by family and friends on April 12th.

Current mood: anxious
Guys and gals,
This is to let you all know that or the next couple of months (quite possibly less) I’ll be a bit off the radar. Between the Fire-god and I we’re taking turns sitting with his father. Senior is dying. Its just a matter of what and when. He went in for a second biopsy on the lung. While in recovery he had a short heart attack. His chances of having another are good. The biopsy has diagnosed him with Stage 4 lung cancer. The doctors feel he wouldn’t survive chemo and radiation may or may not help. If it did it would only add on 8wks to his survival. They predict 3 to 6 months, but we’re quite sure it will be less. He has minimum to no appetite (2 cookies one day, 3" of a sub another, absolutely none on another). He’s on oxygen full time. He needs help standing up and getting out of bed. He spends most of the daytime sleeping with a brief hour here and there of awake. Couple of nights he stayed up to almost 4am before wanting to go to bed. (Fire-god is the ony one of the two of us that can help him get into and out of bed) A couple members of his family has been here to visit over the weekend, but its us that’s staying here (circustances and everything). I fear for the Fire-god sometimes. This is physically hard on him...along with the emotional drain of being seen as the "strong one". I hope that he simply goes to sleep and doesn’t wake up. That would be easier than watchin him slowly suffocate from the cancer. I’ve heard that it’s one of the more insidious forms of cancers, with a bad tendency to migrate. My own father had lung cancer years ago from his smoking habits and work, and had 3/4 of a lung removed. That is also part of what some of my own family feels may have finally killed him. That it had come back for a second time.
But-any-way, we just stay here for now and between us and the hospice (never say that word around Senior) that pops in, try to makehis time comfortable.

Last night Denver Tarot Meetup met for our monthly meeting at Gypsy House Cafe. As our group organizer Scott, was feeling a bit under the weather, I played "organizer" last night. The original plan had been to review, discuss, and practice a 12 card layout. It's 4 variations of the Astrology spread found in Complete Book of Tarot Spreads by Evelin Burger & Johannes Fiebig. As there were several new tarot readers last night, we chose to do something different. We practiced and discussed the Bright Shadow spread by Geraldine Amaral and Lola Lucas. One member graciously agreed to be the test subject. We discussed how the layout is done, some interpretations, and also possible variations on the layout. Everybody had a chance to practice the spread on themselves, with a couple of people speaking out about what appeared for them and asking the groups' opinion. I enjoyed it and hope everyone else did as well. I do miss our weekly meetings but am glad that the group didn't totally fall apart with the change of timing and meeting place. I've done presentations for the group two...three other times. Everytime I've had fun...even when we ran more than two hours. I hope everyone made it home safe and sound and look foward to what comes up next month.
