We the old ones remember a world that was once defined in black and white and yet through life's indifference we have let it fall to grey. And so we hand our children an abstract world of grey and all the while we still describe it as a world of black and white. We complain that they have muddled all the lines and cannot choose which side they're on, and yet to them we are the reason there is no clear line to see. They are crying out for someone to return a sense of real among the thorns of what is not so real surrounding and engulfing them, while we stand here on the shore just waving words and idle hands, telling them how to survive without a sign of true involvement in the river of the damned. They are watching us for colors that exume the graves of truth and pour once again from all our hearts and lives into them. We are standing on the edge of what could be a new revival of the love and peace that once we held so high and too so close. Will we stand here idly by? Or will we jump into the river, losing all we once believed so we can finally truly see; see ourselves and those we've loved, those we've lost, and still may lose if we don't put away our foolish things and become real. Restore color to the gray bringing sunlight to the day. Bleed with love and hope and joy. Wash away the pain.

inspired by two songs I heard and watched on mtv.com this morning "Up The River" (on Good Morning Revival) by Good Charlotte and "Welcome To The Black Parade" (on The Black Parade) by My Chemical Romance.

Bill and I have felt this turning of the tide coming to Christianity's concepts of purpose, evangelism and outreach. We are beginning to see a long overdue meshing of cultures this year.  The result is a portrait of God like none of us has ever seen. :-)

Bill & I are both artists, web developers and innovators in the digital age. We have built an online community of over 600 musicians and writers considered positive impact artist. We have a heart for creative people anxious to work in collaboration towards a common good. So we look forward to meeting others here who are interested in the same!

If you are an indie artist interested in working with us, please please please go to http://rebourne.net/joinrebourne.asp first and register your profile. We have learned over time that if an artist can't take 5 minutes to complete an online profile for us to work with, there is no reason for us to give our time to helping them connect with others.  So consider it a test of commitment to your goals and start off the new year with a new connection that will grow all year for you! We are a heavily visited website with good search engine ranking. So the link you make from our site to yours will help you instantly!

Take care and Happy New Year!

Some of you have asked how this all got started so here's some background mixed with recent revelation about purpose & timing...

I'm in a band that ran into dead ends back in 2002 trying to get out and play in the community, and searching blindly for real info on recording, publishing, distribution, radio play, royalties, copyrights, etc. etc. etc. Then it occured to me (a nudge from God) that it is ridiculous for "Christians" [read:family] to start from scratch finding all this stuff out for ourselves every time a new band forms or a songwriting branches out. Even if you persevere it takes two years to learn, make mistakes, and finally have a break-through. But what if someone just shared everything they learned along the way with others in a public forum, offered freely so that anyone can benefit from it whether they have money or not.

So I asked God to open doors, even the windows of heaven, so we might take our music into every crevice we could find - outside the church walls, beyond city gates, and past the industry hurdles of "you can't this this until you have that" (which takes you in a circle) -- AND I committed to God that whatever doors He opened to us I would take everyone I knew with me! Well God has a sense of humor and took me up on that - then introduced me to several hundred new friends!

For the most part its true... it all about who you know. SO GET OUT AND MEET SOME PEOPLE!  But seriously, you know God and He knows everybody else so who can top that? Ask God to start introducing you to the people He would have you work with, play for, jam with and write with.  And ask Him to protect you from the wolves so you won't waste time and give His provision away to the wrong people out of ignorance or impatience.  Ask for blessings that accomplish and protect His work and He will guide and cover you. I didn't say He'd make you rich and those who interpret the Bible to always be about money are wrong.

{soapbox} If money is the root of all evil why would He choose that as a blessing for us? Prosperity is more about a man's soul, joy, wisdom, and enlarging our territories is more about how many lives we touch for the kingdom of God. He may also wrap us in a blanket of material wealth, but we should not be crying out for that or swallowed up by it. He calls us to lives of sacrifice and humilty, lifting up the unbeliever in love so that He may see God in our eyes, not judgment and profit, and come home.

So I found out in just a few weeks that when I did what God told me, even though it took me away from what I started out doing, WHILE I WAS TAKING CARE OF GOD'S BUSINESS, HE WAS TAKING CARE OF MINE! Many times the people I met while trying to help someone else, wound up being a person who could help our band in some way too, or they had a friend with a venue, a store, a sound system, stage, lighting, ran a print shop, did CD duplication, was a radio DJ, or worked at a packing/shipping company, etc. and the list goes on...

So HERE WE ARE! Three years later and over 300 strong (100 on MySpace that have not Joined Rebourne officially yet!!  This network that ALL of you have been compelled or drawn to connect with at some point has God's fingerprints all over it! And situations like hurricane Katrina in the Gulf and 9/11 when we first got started, all bear witness that God provides the way and the means through - before He ever brings the storms or calls you to be part restoring others or your community.

I believe Rebourne was born for 'such a time as this' to bring worship into city streets. And suddenly we have 20,000 new residents who came to memphis in a matter of days, basically in the streets looking for things to do and somewhere to eat and sleep. Our churches have opened more doors than the government and I am excited to be witness to it and part of the plan. God was not surprised by this recent momentus disaster. He has been raising us up and preparing us for this very time - right here in Memphis and wherever you are - even connecting us with YOU so that you too can come and be part of things here.

There are suddenly more doors opening to positive music that ever because we have the medicine these people need more than food. We bring hope, joy, celebration, and fresh 'water for the soul' new for the day, and we will take music (and the Presence of God) wherever they are in mass, setting up all day festivals without cost because God has taught us to do a new thing and sponsors are realizing it is the right thing at the right time.

{soapbox} If money is all that holds you back then break free. Stop thinking about what you deserve and have a right to and think about what you have been given and where He may be trying to send you to use those gifts to build up the kingdom. He has promised to supply all of your needs. You either believe He is God and will keep His word, or you don't. This is where the sword of truth makes contact with the body. That sword of truth will either break your chains or severe your head from your body because of arrogance.

God's work is not a glorified business so it will NEVER look like the businesses we run in the world every day. Parts of it will always be patterned after that because much like a doctor, we learn our skills and prepare our way. But we must always leave room for a miracle and a chance to move in complete faith towards what we feel compelled to do in the Kingdom, without limits, without fearing God will be broke tomorrow and unable to feed you the next day. If God be God then Let Him!  He will show Himself strong through your weakness and reckless abandon for Him in every facet of your life.

If you can't do it for long, just try it for one month, even one week. Go everywhere you are invited without concern for food, gas, or a place to sleep, and see where He meets you. What do you have to loose when you can always run home to your bed when it is over? At least you can look back and say "I DID THAT!" instead of always wondering what would have happened if... {/soapbox}

It is an incredible time to be alive and plugged into God, his evolving church, its compelling need to reach out again to sister churches and become one Bride again like He designed us to be, and with eyes wide open that we may truly see the signs of the times as clearly as we see the weather, ears that we may hear His voice, and unbound feet that we may go where He sends us one day or moment at a time because we aren't too busy to attend the wedding feast, and most of all, open arms that we may hold those who are in disrepair and welcome those who have come home.

We agree your music does NOT have to be about God, but your life should be. Your love, your insight, your music, and God's Presence above all, should not require a price - the one thing those in need do not have to give. I say the enemy has used that to bind up the church long enough! It is time to be illogical and do exactly what the enemy would never expect - and the one thing that will cause the world to truly see the Bride of Christ, whom I believe God calls "Unity", fully matured in love for the world in its imperfection, and finally caring as a mother for His lost lambs, those who do not yet even know Him but whom He cares and plans for, and the returning prodigals whom He runs to even while they are still a long way off.

I didn't know you when Rebourne came into being, but He has led you to me now so I will fulfill that commitment and calling to help.  There is so much more that God wants to do through His people -and I believe He has chosen to begin with the Artistic Arm of the Body of Christ! Just as the musicians went out before the army in the Biblical age, we now also go forth before the new day of restoration and reclaiming the land and the lost for God. We are the innovators and artists of the new day of God's move, the new church, the new and possibly final generation - and we are raising up in mass like never before - not by coincidence, but my divine appointment - because He is setting the stage for a new outpouring of love and restoration through worship and fellowship - the lighter side of life where burdens are lifted by the very Presence of God among us.

Be wise and true to your purpose; find it and hold on for life! Be an encourager and remember the Joy of the Lord is your strength!

Love in Christ,
Holly Simmers

A special advisory panel of the Memphis Music Commission recently invited input from several of us regarding the Memphis Music Landscape, its current state, needs, and opinions on how to set and attain good goals. This was my reply. It is a private board that you wouldn't be able to read and comment on it there so I welcome any responses here.
-------------------------------------------------------

I think its possible that the Commission has tried to hard to duplicate or bring back something that happened here a long time ago and they may have missed the point of WHY it happened at all, and so many times, so many people suddenly back to back, and is various areas from music to television. Like a snowball effect, each built on eachother's successes and the foundation they laid. But no one saw it coming, they were just more ready to embrace and get excited about something new and raw and risky, than we have been since.

Most of the incredible things that have taken place in Memphis and reached the world, making this city a legend, were ORIGINAL or the first of its kind in TN or in the south or in the nation.  That includes business and television firsts as well as music.  So its not about a sound, a person, or a legacy, but about getting behind the people who make things new and fresh and being ready to take risks and try something different. And that means being realistic about how poor most creative people are in this area.  We have great gifts that could bring wealth and health to the city, but no money to see those dreams through and no real idea where to go for consideration for assistance.

And the city hasn't openly shown iinterest in finding people like that before they make it big on their own, or give up and fall into crime or joblessness, or take their ideas to a city that will help them cultivate it and invest in it.  Now, I have seen some little seminars here and there at times about how to write a grant or get a small business loan to get something new off the ground. But those seminars do not tend to aim their marketing towards musicians, artists, music promoters, entertainers, indie film producers, writers, etc. - the creative sect of Memphis. But I believe this city is intended and primed to be restored from the inside out and inspired to greatness again by its creative community, because we still dream and reach beyond our borders. It would be especially helpful to consider those who are devoted to positive uses of their talents and skills and would even offer them freely sometimes to assist in fundraisers, awareness info fairs, revitalization plans, and in general public performances rebuilding healthy community relationships.

I think we have become a city (or maybe even a society or generation) of people who want proven methods, 5 year plans, and tried and true concepts. And that doesn't generally come from the creative person or group. They need reinforcement for those who can provide such stablity and intellectual consulting but can't on the other hand create these new ideas and resources because they are not able to reach outside their proven walls for other possibilities.  This applies to the way we use entertainment in our community as much as how the artist or playwright begins to think, write or perform outside the norm.

To the best of my knowledge, there are few businesses, organizations, and grant programs ready to promote entrepreneurism, or take a risk on a new sound, new type of venue, new method of disseminating information or using talent in public relations, or fund new up and coming artists -- or a group of industry people who would help facilitate their development, recording, and promotion for a time.  We keep trying to do what other cities are doing only better, or what so and so did back in the 50's because that seemed to work great.  But what we really need is to put a few financial, consulting, and promotional support systems together to listen and watch for that next 'new' thing or band, promotional tool or media concept, that may just be an unsure thing. But we have to take risks on the potential break throughs and be willing to ride out the statistical storm of the money and time we WILL loose on the way to finding the real gem -- that will be exactly what the world is prepared for, suddenly, and has nothing like it to fill some new void.

Those discoveries are like Magic!  And we seldom see them coming in time to build a development and promotional machine around them to reinforce what's started and help ensure its success.  Those processes probably already need to be in place just waiting for the right one to hit.  Kind of like all the work and money we've put into making this city earthquake proof.  We take those risks because if/when one finally hits we won't have a chance to prepare then.  And the lives we'll save will be worth all the risks and waiting we endured. That can be true for the next new 'magic' out of Memphis too, if we plan ahead and realize its all about whether or not we truly love the "Indie Spirit" we say we want to be the capital of.

If you love to see new things birthed you have to plan for them before their arrival, much like a child...  you don't know what it will look like, need, or be talented in, but you have to be ready for its arrival and prepared to go any direction needed to be sure it gets what it needs to mature into something that makes a positive impact on the world and not a negative one.  I believe most negative people in this world came through a parental or similar situation where someone wanted them to be something they were not meant to be and it left them feeling short changed and unwanted, out there finning for itself. Those are the musical children this city has raised up lately and that's why they are all so full of anger and resentment - but they still can't lay down their craft, and they are still looking for signs of hope, if we will just turn around and start seeing who they really are, what they're about, what their real potential is for future glory to this city, and start finding out what they need that we didn't make available when we should have -- and make sure we don't mess up on the future generations too.

take care and know that i am ready to be a help and not a complainer. I have great hope for what is just around the corner for this city and I sacrifice daily to see it come about!  I've been here my whole life and I look forward to Memphis coming into its best season of greatness yet!
