Check out Kylie Brant's newest contest at: http://kyliebrant.com/contest.php and if you are looking for some great reading check out her latest series, Mindhunters: Waking Nightmare, Waking Evil and Waking the Dead from Berkeley Sensation. Kylie's own words say it all: Brilliant criminologists, unlimited resources, infinite time.....the bad guys can still run, but they cannot hide.  I've been a fan since she captured my attention with Last Warrior and each book has gotten better and better. Mindhunters is clearly the most explosive yet!

The woman who was stalking me last year and the reason I had to shut down so much of my writing related work, including making my blogs private died this morning.

I can finally stop worrying what she will do next.

She may try to haunt me as a ghost, but I can handle that. After all, I'm the one with the body, right?

WANTED:  A VIXEN

She's vivacious, a published writer whose romance curls your toes and has you
sighing for more. She weaves a sex scene that leaves you with
palpitations long after ('The End') appears on the last page, and she
has a day each week she'd love to blog with other vivacious vixens.

The Vivacious Vixens of Romance
(
http://vivaciousvix..ensofromance...blogspot...com/ )  are looking for a fifth
vixen to flesh out our week. We blog, we have contests, we chat and
most of all we write some of the best romance around. Sound like your
cup of tea?

Well we've got a contest for you:

Starting Monday October 26 through Monday December 28 a different Vixen candidate will blog with
us in our Monday slot. You can choose from one of the three subjects:

What makes a hot and totally memorable hero?

What makes a romance romantic?

What makes you a Vivacious Vixen for our Den?

First come, first served and we'll let you know which date you've got
so you can invite your friends and readers and they are key!

How will we choose our newest vixen?  By the number of comments your
blog receives (from different people so sorry, your Aunt Grace who
loves your published books can't post 57 messages about how great you
write). Once we have our winner you will have a weekly blog day and the
sky's the limit.
And yes, guys can be vixens too!

How to enter?  Send your name and topic (noted above) to the Vixens at
vivaciousvixensofro..mance@gmail...com

Any questions, please contact us at the same address.

This is another one of those author kind of benchmarks -- having a book available on pre-order. It's another of those points of feeling like you've arrived.  The Spell will be released on November 3 at Siren-Bookstrand but there's this really cool pre-order button on it now.

I love this story and that cover....whew!

Even if I wasn't allergic to cigarette smoke the smell would be enough to drive me away. Once I kissed a guy who smoked. The analogy of licking an ashtray is pretty close to what I felt. It tasted really bad and my stomach was unsettled for hours after. He was a good looking guy too -- like Tom Selleck when he was younger only with blue eyes.

I'll never understand how smokers can eat a fabulous meal and then inhale tobacco.  I know when they light up around me after a meal it totally ruins what I ate for me. I guess it's all about them, huh? Because I seldom hear anyone ask "do you mind?"

Aside from my own problems breathing around cigarette smoke I don't find the stench at all appealing. Generally I don't make friends with people who smoke because it's too uncomfortable, at least for me, and if they have any sensitivity, it's uncomfortable for them. What I've found though is most of them don't care how uncomfortable you are -- they ened their fix. That's what an addiction will do to you.  I know that's how I am with my morning coffee. You don't want to talk to me before I have my first cup. Not that I'm nasty, I just have no clue what you are talking about and I'm not very friendly. But smokers, well, the ones I know, out of their way, they are going to have their fix no matter what.

Yes, something that happened this week prompted this.

I have a friend that smokes.  She's a life long smoker. Her car smells of it, her clothes smell of it, her hair smells of it. Even when she wears perfume you can smell it, but what would be a nice cologne is messed up with the cigarette smoke.  It turns my stomach. Before she leaves for work in the morning she has a smoke. On the way to the car at night she has a smoke. I'd walk at a distance so I didn't have to smell it but once you're in the car, it's on her clothes, in her hair and you can smell it.

After meals she has to have a cigarette -- and when we do eat out together -- generally with a group - even though I keep moving out of range, rather than raise her voice -- I certainly wouldn't expect her to put the damn cigarette out -- that would mean someone else was coming first -- she moves closer. She has to know I'm moving away to get away from the smoke -- especially when I fan my hand in front of my face and say "I need to get away from the smoke." And because of how it ruins the taste of an otherwise great dinner in my mouth I can't imagine hers tastes even better. It pisses me off to spend money on a nice meal to have it ruined with the stench of cigarette smoke.

So this week I needed help with something and as a last resort, I called the smoker. She smoked on the way over to my house -- I could tell because the stink was pretty fresh. And yes, it was in her clothes, in her hair. Molly, the 21 year old kitty started to meow in her "I'm not happy tone"....she doesn't like bad smells either.

It was late and I needed to get to bed...I didn't say "hey, have a seat, let's talk..." I stood at the front door, waiting for her to get the hint to leave. She doesn't get hints and even when you say outright "I need to go" there's always an "oh I forgot to tell you". It's never, "okay, talk to you later."

SHE suggested moving further into the house because Molly was getting pretty strident. SHE sat, I busied myself getting ready to close up the house so I could get up in the morning. I finally told her that the smell of the cigarette smoke was bothering me.  Her response?

Not -- oh man, I'm sorry.

Not -- I should have remembered.

It was, "Gee, I didn't smoke that much today."

IT'S IN YOUR CLOTHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  IT'S EMBEDDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We stepped outside.....I hoped for the hint to be taken where she'd say "listen, it's late, we'll talk later" and go on her way. Oh no, she was going to continue the story that I had no clue what it was about until she was good and ready to leave. And even outside the smell of the cigarette smoke overwhelmed me. It made me dizzy and sick to my stomach.

As I walked back in the house I realized I can't continue the friendship. She's never going to not smoke around me and I'll never be okay around it. If we were to consider going on a day trip, she'd never, on her own, not smoke for an hour or so before and then NOT smoke all day. And if I asked her  not to there would be martyr drama and comments about what she's done for me.

The sad part is, she's an interesting person. She's been there when I needed someone go hold my hand at the emergency vet at 2 in the morning. But physically I can't handle the smell of the cigarette smoke.

I do agree smokers have a right to smoke. I just wish they didn't feel the need to "share" it with us non-smokers, especially after a meal.

I LOVE Fleet Week!  I wish we had Fleet Month but only if the Blue Angels would fly every day.

When I was a kid my dad used to drag us out to Jones Beach to watch the air shows. The planes were cool but nothing like the F/A-18 that the Blue Angels fly today. My dad would be impressed with them and nothing ever impressed him.

I still remember the first time they flew over San Francisco Bay when Diane Feinstein was the mayor. They showed up, unannounced and it did scare people. She was livid. To make it up to her they took her up. Things were cool after that. Things moved from one airshow on Saturday afternoon to Saturday and Sunday shows plus 2-3 days of practice -- all to the thrill of most San Franciscans.

I love the roar of the jets, it's a huge adrenaline rush. I love how close they fly, the precision. They zip through the buildings like they're nothing and the view over the bay is amazing. I used to work in a building where we could go up to the roof on the 32nd floor -- you'd swear you could reach up and touch the planes while they flew overhead. Safety always comes first.

When my Marine was still in the Corps and NAS Alameda was still open I got to not only go out on their flight line, but to sit in the two-seater. No, I didn't get to fly, but sitting in the cockpit was awesome. In private the pilots were average, every day guys who were fun and interesting to talk to.

After Fleet Week comes what I think of as the "better" time of year -- rain, cold, dark -- purrrrrrrrrrrfect for writing. And lots and lots of days off. They seem to signal the start of the holiday season which even if you aren't into the celebrations the days off are great. Lots of time for reading and writing....Nano is 27 days away!

It took some prodding by my publisher but Fictiionwise finally listed Michael's Flight! And the universe seemed to decide this book deserved a fair shot and after debuting at 105 it moved quickly to 74 for my publisher, eXtasy. Given all the talented authors at eXtasy that's pretty darn good!

I'm a huge Clark Gable fan. I have been ever since I first saw Gone With the Wind and that is a story in itself. In 1976 I was in a pretty serious car accident and when I came home from the hospital I could sit and watch TV. That was it. I couldn't read because of how I needed to hold my head and back then we didn't have audio books. For an avid reader who snuck off to read every chance she got and who read about a book a day while commuting on the train to New York, not being able to read was a personal hell. So my parents got what was where they lived a "new" thing -- it was called HBO. Back then there were one or maybe two movies a month and in May of 1976 it was Gone With the Wind, twice a day, every day for a month. As a four hour movie that was 8 hours a day of Clark Gable and I was in love. He became my hero since I couldn't read my regulars. At one point my mother groused she felt like she was living with Rhett Butler.

Didn't I wish!

Don't I still wish! Rhett that is, not necessariliy Clark Gable although if you read about the love story between he and Carol Lombard it is the stuff of a romance novel.

But I was hooked on the actor and character even though the one was long dead.

Fast foward to 1989 and the Loma Prieta earthquake. I was working in San Francisco on the 29th Floor of one of the last buildings on bedrock. We rocked, we rolled and then after 45 seconds the lights went out and so did the phones. When we were allowed back in the building our admin guy came up to me and told me they had found 27 pairs of shoes around my desk. Hey! if you are into shoes you know you need a pair in each color and in each height - flat, mid and high, right?

My co-workers used to laugh at me because of the things I carry in my purse like a small first aid kid and a flashlight. That night I was part of the group that left the 29th floor and as we moved down those 29 flights I had a LOT of new friends. I was the one with the flashlight  I found a friend who rode my bus and we made our way to the bus stop and finally got on one heading home. We were mid-way across the Golden Gate Bridge and one of our fellow riders who had a transistor radio (remember those) yelled out the bridge had fallen. Of course we panicked until we found out it wasn't OUR bridge. Just the same, it could happen and we sure wanted our bus driver to get us off tha bridge fast.

I finally got home close to 10 that night -- it was a long, weary drive up 101 on that bus with all the cars, trucks and other vehicles that couldn't go across the bay bridge. Yes, the one that was shut down last weekend. When I finally got in I called my parents who had moved to southern California from New York to let them know I was okay, home safe and so was my house. My mother complained I woke her for no good reason. Such a lovely woman. She told me they have earthquakes all the time and she'd call me the next day.

Three days later I heard from her and got an earful about paying my bills and being irresponsible and at least I could have turned on the answering machine.

Yes, well we had an earthquake. Once again she reminded me they have them routinely. Just get my act together. I was stunned. Nevertheless in November a friend of mine and I went down to southern California. We were both dating Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton and wanted to see our guys. When we arrived my friend, Heather, told my mom about what a drag BART had become because of all the extra people. My mother dutifully asked where they came from -- Bay Bridge drivers.

Mom asked why.

Heather explained the bridge fell down.

My mother asked why don't they just put it back up?

Sure, why not?

Mom got it after that. Sort of

A few weeks later mom called me all in a panic -- the Bay Bridge was down again, San Francisco was on fire, was I all right. I assured her I was fine and she told me not to lie to her, was I sure.

Um, yeah, I felt fine.

She continued to ramble on about this big earthquake and how the city was in shambles and why didn't I know. When she finally came up for air I asked her what she was watching.

The news.

Was she sure?

Hey, don't ever question my mother's reality, okay?

I asked again.

She very patiently explained to me that she was watching it live and people were singing and praying.

Uh huh.

Yes, singing and praying and Clark Gable was leading them.

Um, mom, Clark Gable is dead.

There was silence on the phone. I'd say she was confused because you couldn't make something like this up.

She asked "so it's a movie?"

Uh huh.

She assured me all she wanted to do was let me know she cared about me.

Awwwwwww.

So this weekend, in addition bringing Hugh Jackman home with me (don't I wish -- it's the Prestige I also borrowed from the library) I brought home San Francisco with Clark Gable. It is about the 1906 earthquake. The really bad one. And yes, there is singing and Spencer Tracy plays a priest (of course). It's a pretty good movie and I'd recommend it.

We do these periodically on my yahoo group and we've found they're a great way to get in gear writing. We range from someone starting their very first book to multi-published best sellers like Jennifer Cloud and Sherry Derr-Wille participate.

We're starting our newest round on September 13 for two weeks. 1,000 words a day for two weeks. We check in at least 10 out of the 14 days, encourage each other and get in gear. Looking for a writing challenge? come join us:
