BUILT ON GRAVES

I close my eyes to see what's real
But there's nothing, there's nothing there
Screamed at this world, both arms outstretched
It just laughed and I coughed blood
I've waged a war that I can't win
And all these walls are closing in
Could it be me, could it be so
That sour taste is letting go
I looked above, I searched the skies
For a silver lining, for a reason why
Every word I said, I fucking meant
I can't press rewind, I can't take it back
I've waged a war that I can't win
And all these walls are closing in
Could it be me, could it be so
That sour taste is letting go
I can't win
This life's a path built on graves
Of those who tried and died before
As they soared towards the sun
They burned their wings and they were gone
And they were gone

IN CIRCLES

Beaten senseless by the hands of time
I see their empty eyes as I pass them by
Tired of living a life that's just a lie
Devoid of hope, born only to die
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers
We all know what we are
There's no beauty in this part of town
There's no solace when the lights go out
I walk the same damn streets
It's the same air that I breathe
Just like them I'll live
Just like them I'll die
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers
We all know what we are
To open graves, to empty hands
To our bitter fate, swallow it down
Breathless now, as silence surrounds
Another restless soul that life passed by
I heard him say that only dust remains
I paid him no mind but he sure was right
There's no beauty in this part of town
There's no solace when the lights go out
To open graves, to empty hands
To our bitter fate, swallow it down

Rise And Fall Update Late September '08

Today is september 29th and it's crazy to realise that almost a year has passed since we originally booked studiotime at Godcity in november '07. All 4 of us thought it would be challenging and above all possible to write a record within a really narrow timeframe, starting the minute we ended our last US tour in august '07 'till we would hit the studio in november that same year, and that it would make for a record where all songs add up to one compact beast.

However we forgot to take in account that nothing is ever easy when it comes to Rise And Fall and even more so when it comes to writing. None of us wanted to write the same record we already wrote. While "Into Oblivion" came as a natural progression, the next step up from the previous record "Hellmouth", now we stepped away from the blueprint that determined our writing process. While working like that makes space for creative input from all angles it also takes away the very foundation of what you are used to when creating music.

As stated higher none of us wanted to make same same record we already did but whilst doing so we also kept in mind that we wanted to write and record a record that is 100% Rise And Fall. So taking that in account, also losing our rehearsal place 3 times, building our own rehearsal place together with our friends Arne & Wouter, to not have to deal with those problems anymore, encountering times where we would rather fight eachother than play music together and experiencing the disadvantages of a democracy within a band first hand...all of this brings us one year later.

As we speak we are recording demos for 8 tracks we are satisfied with at this point, we have scheduled another demo session early '09, we're stoked Kurt @ Godcity still wants to work with us after we flaked out on him last year and are looking forward to the experience of working with him. And above all, we will be more than stoked when a new Rise And Fall record is fact instead of some vision in our heads. Keep posted to be updated on how our writing is coming along and more Rise And Fall related news in general.

All yours and sincerely,

RISE AND FALL

Welcome to the second update of our US West Coast Trip.
We played SOUND & FURY and shit was wild, it's fucking crazy to travel to the other side of the world and have kids appreciate what you're doing. It's not everyday that as a band you stop and think about the sheer insanity of that fact. S&F is probably the coolest hardcore fest ever. Great bands, kids going insane, good vibes,...You need to experience it to know what i'm talking about. Anyway, without further ado here's a couple of pix we took.

TO CUT TO THE CHASE, THIS IS THE GAYEST PICTURE IN THE HISTORY OF R&F

James Nightblind on the left alomost crashed his van 4 times after he picked us up from the airport, dude on the right is Daniel, he gave our jetlagged bodies a bed to crash on which was well appreciated.

SHOWS WE'VE PLAYED, SIGHTS WE'VE SEEN, WHAT'S UP TOMMY!

NEWHALL, CA
Hardly anyone at the show due to the post-Sound & Fury syndrome. These shows are character building or atleast that's what you like to tell yourself when your playing a shows to 20 kids. 20 kids or not, we had a great time playing and everything went a lot easier compared to S&F where we were still jetlagged as fuck. It's nice not to be exhausted 3 songs into the set. We hung out in the street, catched up with JD Shipwreck and Corey Affairs provided the needed entertainment.

ORANGEVALE, CA
Today there's loads of kids, our show gets cut in two, due to Cedrics amp bailing out on him. It sucks when your set suffers from technical difficulties. Usually we try to calculate all the risks and act on those to try and prevent them, but sometimes shit just happens. One can only do so much. Even though we needed a 5 minute break midset for Cedric to rewire his shit kids didn't seem to mind much and we blasted thru the rest of the set and it was cool. Cedric played with Blacklisted tonight coz Foster couldn't make it to the show. He learned their songs on the way to the show and with some help from the almighty BeanHead. Shipwreck Ruled. Last day for Grandpa on the WestCoast. We spent the night at Mike from HOODS his house, now that is one wild dude. He was a Pro Soccer player in Belgium and Germany in the 90's so he was stoked to have some euros in his house.

PORTLAND, OR
Tragedy is from Portland. Unfortunately Tragedy is not on the bill and unfortunately there's also no one at the show. Haha. Luckily we are all in a good mood so I didn't hear anyone complain about the poor attendance. I'm over rating the show by how many kids show up or how many kids dance or how much merch you sell. And I'm especially over it on nights with really poor attendance. It's a mind trick but it works.
As usual with poor attended shows all bands played real good sets and the kids that were there were into it. Both Alpha & Omega and Black Breath rule tonight and our set was fucking loud if anything.

TACOMA, WA
Short drive today, so we all went out to spend $$$. Did some shopping, went to Starbucks, bought strings for half the price of what we would pay in Europe. On the way to the show the weather changes from awesome to shitty which sucks so I guess in some weird way it's cool that we have an overnight drive so we can leave the rain and pretend it never happened. An alright turnout for tonights show and all bands sets go down well. After the show ended and all the kids went home some band started to rehearse, they sounded like Jimmy Eat World meets Converge meets Bulldoze meets Bold. When silence is all you want this is the last thing you need. After the show we get in the van for a 15 hour drive to Oakland. I passed out 30 minutes into the drive and woke up once we got back to California. Best Overnight Drive Ever.

OAKLAND, CA
We get to Oakland around 4 in the afternoon and go for a walk around the city. It had the vibe I figured and would have. Me and Cedric went to American Apparel and got milkshakes coz we're fucking nerds. Good turnout tonight and kids seemed to be into it. Rob from 108 came out, so did Nicole, Kimpossible, dudes from Lights Out and Allegiance and last but not least our friend Karolien who's chilling in San Francisco for the summer. It was great seeing all these people there, after the show all of us went for pizza nextdoor. We drove overnight again and passing out right after dinner was a bad idea coz it always gives me acid reflux. I'm getting OLD.

Check out these pictures, we also got 2 more shows coming up. Tonight we're playing San Diego and tomorrow Riverside.

SAN DIEGO , CA
This show was cool because it was at a legendary venue, besides the venue being legendary there was not much legendary about the show. Todd Jones came down, that was awesome. After the show we were driving when all of a sudden the driver next to us tells us to stop coz our trailer is open and we're losing all our shit. My bag and Cedric's were the ones that fell out. I decided not to lose my mind until we officially lost them, because stressfree is how I roll these days. So after walking back for a 1/4 mile we found them in the middle of the road. 18 wheels were almost rolling, rolling over our bags.

RIVERSIDE, CA
One of the best shows, if not the best one, we've played on this trip. a lot of kids, a lot of enthusiastic kids, a nice venue with a nice stage makes for a nice show. It's always good to end the tour on a high note. After the show we took some classic group pictures and we went to In & Out. JP bought one of their retarded T-shirts and Bjorn inhaled his 8th double double burger in 10 days. After that we went to Phillip, A&O drummer's house to pack our shit and Bryan and Luis took us to the airport. Bjorn, Cedric and JP were not so stoked on the 24 hour trip back home. I'm staying in LA for another week and last night I went by Danzig's house and to a free Today Is The Day show in LA. There we're 30 people there so I guess bad turnouts is not only reserved for raging shitheads from Belgium.

So we just had a pretty nice and intense weekend worth to write a few lines about.

We first played in Mol, Belgium and were excited to catch up with our good friends in MELTDOWN and BITTER END who kicked off their euro tour a few days ago. Needless to say that a "Pauly Edge hang out" is always worth any other hang out in the world.

A lot of people showed up for this nice bill including bands such as Ruins, Dirty Money, 50 Lions and State of Mind and it seemed everyone was having a good time. The Rise and Fall set was insane and we enjoyed every second of it. The massive dutch delegation took care of business and turned the whole place into a riot field. Bjorn almost broke his back with yet another full body slam on stage but he's getting used to it and doesnt seem to mind anymore. I still fear the day he wont get back on his feet anymore but hey, remember we're talking about the man who walked around the entire summer last year with a 1 inch hole in his arm.

Paco Weekenstroo was on the spot to catch a few hot moments of action and as always, the native south american red head didnt disappoint with another set of awesome pictures. Check out his work at www.pacoweekenstroo.com

Next in line was THE controversial Guns Up! show in Leeds. After a 3 hours night we drove to Calais to catch our train and head to the UK. Leeds is pretty far and it took us a few hours to get there. After so much stories and dramas in the past week, the show was still scheduled to happen but apparently quite a few people thought it wasnt worth going anymore since GU! pulled off. We're not here to give lessons but the only thing I can say is that UK has a lot of good bands and they also deserve your support. Dont judge a show by its amount of US bands or else. Keep supporting your local bands and your local scene in general. Props up to the people who showed up and supported the bands playing sunday night. We played a very tight and heavy set to a very enthusiatic crowd that made us feel welcome and forget about the hours spent in the car. Thank you all for the good times.

Current mood:  working

Dear Rise and Fall friends and supporters around the world,

Even though things seem pretty silent around us lately, this band is going through a hard and violent pregnancy that will eventually give birth to a new sonic era of ear destruction and riff explosions.

We've locked ourselves up in our new surreal practice room and have been relentlessly working on new material since January. We thought it'd be an easy thing to start riffing and blend it all together but we were wrong. Our admiration for greater heaviness and extreme chaos make it all harder for us to be satisfied as we truly want to bring you the sharpest translation of what boils inside this band.

Besides practicing, we've lined up a couple of shows for 2008 in order to keep up with things. The first 3 of the series have been nothing but amazing and we cant tell you how good it felt to play to such packed up venues and over-enthusiastic kids. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the show promoters and people who've been trying to book us in the past few months. Our mailbox is literally submerged with show requests and you have to understand that we just cant play everywhere at any time. The writing process of the new record takes time and patience and we want to make sure that we dont rush things. We really appreciate the support and the fact that you think about Rise and Fall to play in your city and we promise, we'll be back playing and touring on a more consistent basis in 2009, with a new record under the belt.

About our upcoming touring plans: keep checking back for eventual new shows additions. Right now we can already give you some hints: one exclusive show in Portugal, one exclusive Guns Up! reunion show in the UK, German shows with Converge and last but not least: we will be back to the US for an appearance at the mighty SOUND AND FURY 2008 followed up by a week on the west coast. We hope to see as many of you during the summer.

What you can expect from us in the forthcoming weeks: a blog kind of site where you'll be able to follow what's cooking in the practice room (including pictures and videos), a revamped myspace page, a new exclusive US based webstore for all our american friends and a new merch line that will be made available for the next shows.

Until then, keep checking back for updates and changes.

-Rise and Fall
