CIRCUS DEVILS
- GRINGO (HAPPY JACK ROCK RECORDS 22)

PRE ORDER HERE

RELEASE DATE APRIL 14 2009

CIRCUS DEVILS proves that accessibility and experimentation can go hand in hand on GRINGO, an acoustic song cycle with a 1970's Morricone-esque Southwestern flavor. You can almost smell the sage brush and gasoline on every track. Robert Pollard and the Tobias brothers bring us the story of the Gringo with moods ranging from jubilant to melancholy to mean, all wrapped in the trademark Circus Devils palette of exotic sounds. As always, this is not last year’s Circus Devils record, but with GRINGO, this has never been more true.

BOSTON SPACESHIPS
- THE PLANETS ARE BLASTED (GUIDED BY VOICES INC
5)

PRE - ORDER HERE

RELEASE DATE FEBRUARY 27 2009

Guests include
a string trio, Greg Demos (GBV 1990-99), Gary
Jarman (The Cribs) and Chris Funk (The Decemberists).

Following a 4-star review in Mojo and a successful
whirlwind U.S. tour, Boston Spaceships return
to Earth with their sophomore album just 5 months
later!
The nuanced and transcendent
rock album culminates in an extraordinary side
2 with four of Pollard's best yet:
- the majestic and metaphorical
"Queen of Stormy Weather" who threatens
to "pee on my parade."
- "The Town That's
After Me" combines acoustic, electric guitar
and strings to stunning effect.
- "Sight On Sight,"
a 4-minute mini-epic, detours to otherworldly
chants, echoes and drones, sitars, handrums and
tambourines, but rocks like heck.
- the verse of "Heavy
Crown" is melodically reminiscent of the
Guided By Voices hit "Everywhere With Helicopter",
but Pollard ups the ante with an even better chorus
and then goes over the top with a still catchier
refrain.

Another Pollard classic

ROBERT POLLARD - THE CRAWLING DISTANCE (GUIDED BY VOICES INC 4)

PRE - ORDER
RELEASE DATE JANUARY 20 2009 - WILL START SHIPPING RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS!!

From the stately Kraut-rock chug of the album opener, "Faking My Harlequin", to the schizo-frenetic closing track "Too Much Fun," with structural u-turns piled on top of tempo shifts, The Crawling Distance is unlike any Pollard album you've heard before. With 10 tracks, most clocking in at 3 and 4+ minutes, highlights include the gorgeous "It's Easy", a rare Pollard ballad (albeit a ballad with creepy oddball imagery) and "The Butler Stands For All Of Us", a subtle, melancholy song that ranks among Pollard's best ever.

Carbon Whales - South EP CD/7" - July 15th release

WEB ONLY EXCLUSIVE
This is a Bob SPONSORED release. The Carbon Whales are an obscure band from the late 70s that actor Paddy Considine turned Bob on to. The 4 songs on this EP are apparently the only things they ever recorded. It was never released. Bob really loved it so we tracked the band down and asked if we could release it. The singer sounds EXACTLY like Bob. Check out the song writing team of Bob Evans and Joustin Clark.

It's been two weeks since the release of Robert Pollard's last album, Robert Pollard Is Off to Business, which means it's time for the announcement of a new one. The prolific Dayton songwriter's next album is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a collaborative effort: the full-length debut from half the band on the "Little Green Onion Man" EP.

This new band calls itself Boston Spaceships, and in addition to Pollard, it features Decemberists drummer/Perhapst main man John Moen and frequent Pollard collaborator Chris Slusarenko (Guided by Voices, the Takeovers). The group's first album is called Brown Submarine, and it comes out September 9 via Guided by Voices, Inc. Check out the closing track "Go for the Exit", available for download below.

Boston Spaceships will make their live debut at Cincinnati's Midpoint Music Festival on September 25, after which they will embark on a U.S. tour with the High Strung.

On August 6, Fantagraphics will finally publish Pollard's coffee table art book, Town of Mirrors: The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard. There will be a release party/art exhibit to celebrate on August 15 at the Merge Records Art Gallery in Durham, North Carolina.

Since the dissolution of Guided by Voices, to say that Robert Pollard has kept extremely busy would be an understatement. Pollard turned out two solo albums for Merge Records in 2007 alone, just released a new album, titled 'Robert Pollard Is Off to Business' and launched his own label called GBV Inc.

"I have pretty much been able to accurately target my audience," Pollard tells Spinner. "So it makes more sense to keep [my music] in house. Also, it's easier to keep up with my torrid pace of releases. I'm always up to something and I can't stop it. I've just got a lot of different avenues now. Various music projects, art projects, merchandising, etc. I also have some good people in my corner and I have very dependable fans."

Those fans will be delighted to know that Pollard will have another album out with his new band, Boston Spaceships, in September, and will hit the road alongside members Chris Slusarenko (a Guided By Voices vet) and the Decemberists' John Moen. Fans pining for a GBV reunion may be out of luck, but the piss bucket will come out of storage.

"Oh, we still have a piss bucket and a puke bucket too," Pollard says. "I've got a new band to use them."

Robert Pollard Returns To Serious 'Business'

May 07, 2008, 6:15 PM ET
Greg Prato, N.Y.
The ever-prolific ex-Guided By Voices leader Robert Pollard is taking on new artistic challenges this year as he prepares to launch his own record label -- Guided By Voices Inc. -- and release his latest solo outing, "Robert Pollard Is Off to Business," on June 3.

"I made the album purposely into more of a classic rock-styled record, where I was a little more disciplined with my songwriting approach," Pollard tells Billboard.com. "Almost a semi-prog rock record, although it's a pop record too. Kind of in the vein of Peter Gabriel's first solo album. It's a starting point."

Interestingly, Pollard almost dusted off the Guided by Voices name for the project.

"I was at one point toying with using the name again.... But then I thought it might be construed as I'm trying to capitalize on the name to sell more records -- and I didn't want it to appear that way. My manager decided, 'Why don't we call that the label -- Guided By Voices Inc.?'"

For now, the label will solely handle Pollard's own records, but this may change in the future to include other acts.

Also on the horizon will be a tour to support "Robert Pollard Is Off to Business."

"I think I'm going to out in the fall -- after I have this album and a couple of more things finished, and I have a lot of material to work with. My goal is I don't want to play anything I've played live before live. I know a lot of people expect ... 'Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory' and 'Cut-Out Witch' and things like that. I've been doing things like that for so long that I'm sick of doing that.... I want to play not necessarily mostly new stuff, but the older songs, I want them to be obscure -- like songs from 'Suitcase.'"

Also coming this summer will be a coffee table book, 'Town of Mirrors,' via Fantagraphics Books.

"I did an art show with my collages just recently. In the last couple of years, I've had people come to me and say, 'You've got to do an art show with your collages.' So I did one about six months ago. I've been talking to a couple of people from Fantagraphics for the last few years -- they were interested in doing a coffee table book. And I thought, 'I don't know if I have enough stuff ... they've got people like R. Crumb and Charles Schultz. I thought, 'That's pretty serious company.' But they were interested and with the success of this New York art show, I thought, 'Let's do it then.'"

Lastly, expect further musical projects from Pollard, including a brand new band.

"I continue to work with Todd Tobias, and we do the Circus Devils thing -- we have a Circus Devils record finished, and we've got another one we're going to work on soon. And I've got another project that I'm not really going to go into, because I want there to be a little bit of mystery about it – a new band I'm forming called Boston Spaceships. I'm not quite sure who's going to be involved, but I plan on that being my new band."
