Wow, it has been a while since we have updated the old MySpace blog. If you are still here, let me give you a quick update:
Narangkar is starting her MFA program at UC Berkeley so we have restructured the gallery a bit to accommidate our new lives. Our new open hours are Friday and Saturday from 11am to 6pm. Or by appointment. We have also done a bit of redecorating. Come by and check out the our new style and tell us how much you love it. We removed the book island, added a desk, and now have a few shelves of books on the face wall. We also are now carrying items related directly to the exhibiting artist. Example: Carl Auge's band, Drain the Sky, has their records available during his show. Narangkar has also done a redesign and clean-up of our website. Not an extreme change, but the CSS should make things go a bit faster.
The latest edition of the Found Paper Journal is killing it. Available at better papergoods outlets across the nation, or, better yet, get your directly in the gallery or our online artists bookstore. They rule, if I do say so myself.
We also have an exclusive print edition coming out from Los Angeles art weirdo Travis Millard. The print is done and we just need to get him to sign them and they should be go to go by September 1st. Look for a new paper-bag print from Pete Glover coming in just a few days later! Exclusives, baby!
ArtQuest 2 is coming up next Saturday, August 22nd. Lots of great art events happening on the 40th St. Corridor. Check them all out and you just may win some valuable prizes.
Upcoming exhibitions in the gallery include Michelle Ramirez (opens Sept. 5th), Sunura Taylor, and the Double Exposure II group show.
And if we may promote ourselves, Narangkar huge solo exhibition It's Gonna Be Awesome is coming to Blankspace Gallery on September 12th. It is going to be, you guessed it, awesome! Pete is also doing stuff, too.
Check out our website for more frequent updates. See you around.

Some of our favorites from the current exhibition at Rowan Morrison: This Too Shall Pass: new paintings by Deth P. Sun "Walking Out of Crystal Caves" 36" x 36" This one is just classic Deth. It is a great variation on the image that was painted for the promotion of the show. At 3 feet square, it is one of the largest paintings I've seen from Deth. I also love that even though the painting is large, the characters are still about the same size as the smaller works... it is just the settings that are getting more grand in scale. "The Fight" 11" x 14" This one has the black cat squaring off against the hero cat. Deth says that he is not setting out to create a specific narrative with these works, but clearly he is illustrating a hero's journey. I interpret this painting as the cat's battle against his darker self, his shadow. It kind of reminds me of the movie Krull.
"Turtle in Triangle" 8" x 8" Deth used black mattes in some of the paintings for this exhibition and this one with the sea turtle is my current favorite. A few of these depict objects or characters with no scenic context, which is a change of pace for Deth and can make for some powerful images.
Deth assembled a wall of 168 small paintings. No photos can do justice of this thing. Come check it out while you can. Here are a few of our favorite small ones:
"Cat in the Forest" 7" x 5" Deth has gotten really good at drawing forests, mountains, and ocean landscapes. I've been pleased in the past year or so to see some paintings that are exclusively landscapes. I didn't even notice the shadowy cat in this painting at first, but it only makes it better for me. At first I thought that the cat was evil, but now I think that he is more afraid of me than I am of him.
"Giant Cat Among Rocks" 7" x 5" Rising from the sea like a goofy feline Kraken. This is just a great painting that reminds me a little of Stimpy. I also love the use of the word "Among" in the title, like these rocks are where you go to see the Giant Cat.
"Random Object 4" 5" x 5" Working with Deth on his upcoming book, "This Too Shall Pass" (releasing Feb 13th!!!), I got a great opportunity to see what a master of drawing Deth is. His paintings rarely show his ability and proclivity to draw everyday objects with charm and delight. There are several paintings that have this sketchbook quality too them in the show, and I like this one the best because it has a 12-sided dice, a pinball game "a "Murderhorn" pinball game if I'm not mistaken), and a little tree. Nice.
"Consoling the Lonely" 5" x 7" A lot of people connected with this painting and it was the first to sell. Very sad but comforting.
"Spaghetti Cat" 5" x 5" This is Narangkar's favorite. Very cute and I think that cat in this one is looking a lot like a real cat rather than anthropomorphized.
"Snowy Home" 7" x 5" This is one of my favorites. It just showcases Deth's skills at drawing architecture. The dull yellow really brings this piece to the front. Just a satisfying image to look at.
"Only You" 5" x 5" This painting also speaks to me personally because it seems like a tribute to my own cat, Toby, who passed away in the summer of 07. Toby was all black and we were very close. No matter how many cats I share my life with, there is only one Toby
"Mountain in Circle" 5" x 5" This is a great example of Deth's excellent recent us of landscape, stylized decoration (being the clouds above), and vignetting (the black circle) combined to make a great image that is a departure from the hero cat but still completely in line with all the other work.
"This Too Shall Pass" is up at Rowan Morrison Gallery until February 14th, with a closing reception and book release party on Friday the 13th. There are almost 200 paintings in the show and not a single one falls short. You can view most of the work online, with prices, here: http://www.rowanmorrison.com/dethshow.html. Come by (or check them out online) and let us know what your favorites are.

So, we just worked out a wonderful situation for our opening nights - with a generous donation of Trumer Pils beer from the brewey itself. If you haven't had Trumer, it's one of the area's best beers. I'm a huge fan of Pilsner beers. I also like ambers, lagers and IPAs, but I'm not a huge fan of the stouts. I really do like Pilsner the best - I think I figured that out in Prague with all the Pilsner Urqell that we drank.
So, stop by this saturday to check out Deth's show and enjoy yourself a nice cold Trumer Pils.
See you then, Narangkar

What’s up MySpace Friends? Rowan Morrison celebrated it’s two year anniversary back on the first day of spring. We also rocked out at SxSW with our pals from Okay Mountain, hosted killer exhibition from San Jose superstar Mitsy Ovalles and Oakland nature-boy Christopher Russell, and painted a 27’ wide mural in downtown Oakland: We released an exclusive serigraph edition from Mel Kadel, announced that we are publishing a limited edition book with John Casey, got an intern whom we boss around a lot, and are actually receiving free books to review on our art book blog. Now that we are all caught up, make sure you stop by the gallery this month to see the new watercolors and oil paintings of Berkeley artist Michelle Huber. Up until at least May 4th. We may be extending the show and extra week due to popular demand. We also have a lot of great stuff coming down the pipeline for you: The 2nd round of Found Paper Journals, a free Rowan Morrison zine, art exhibitions from Adam5100, Kris Chau, and Seth Armstrong, maybe a Rowan Morrison t-shirt or something, and lots of other tasty treats. Stick with me, kid, we’re going places.

So, just a quick update here since it's been a while since we've posted anything: First, our Found Paper Journals have been out for about three weeks, and the response has been phenomenal. They're selling fast, in fact so fast that we decided not to wholesale them out to any other shops (for now). Maybe in our next edition, we'll have enough to distribute all over. Second, Killer Cuts and Killing Shapes has just been unveiled - This is a little book with only the paper cuts of Japan's Finest, Ryohei Tanaka. It's fucking insane, incredible, mind-bending, brain-boggling. We're so thrilled that we were able to bring to print this amazing body of work. But don't just trust us, see for yourself! At a measly $8 bucks, anyone can afford it, and gee, hmm it would make a really neat-o stocking stuffer... Lastly, we are gearing up for our Holiday Bash, The RoMoLoCoGroupShow (that stands for Rowan Morrison Low Commission Group Show). 30 Artists have all agreed to participate, 85% of the sales price go to them. Join us as we toast to you, our dear well wishers and supporters, as it's you who have kept us involved in this business. See you then!
