Exclusive: Digging Horror & Metal with Rusty Eye

by Gregory Burkart, Today 10:58 AM PDT

Rusty Eye

One of the perks of this gig is meeting do-it-yourself artists whose love of all things dark, heavy and brutal is matched only by their innovative energy. There really aren’t as many of them out there as you’d imagine, so it’s a great day when you find a band that understands the connection of horror movies and heavy music down at the molecular level. The Hollywood-based trio known as Rusty Eye don’t just take the standard metal formula and graft horror lyrics and gore-drenched artwork onto it; they know exactly what the thrill of horror cinema feels like, and they’ve found a way to express it musically, capturing the exact same breathless feeling you got when you saw Suspiria, The Beyond or Evil Dead for the first time.

That ain't hype, either – the proof is burned right on the tracks of their latest full-length release, Possessor. You may think you know horror metal, but this band just might flip your perspective. If you doubt me (and you do so at your peril), check out their seriously high-tuned website, which just launched this week, and watch them in action... and I mean that literally, because their unique presentation lets you see them perform the tracks from Possessor in a three-panel interactive viewer.

If you’re into horror, giallo, grindhouse cinema or just straight-up heavy music – any of the above are probably a given, if you’re reading this – you owe it to yourself to check these guys out. Plus their new site is really amazing (I guarantee you’ve never seen a presentation quite like it before), and their sleazy, sick and sinister video for Mr. Cannibal (from previous album Stendhal Syndrome) is a wonder to behold. But before you go too far, settle in for a moment while the Rusty Eye crew – comprised of drummer/singer Miss Randall (who plays wicked double-kick... in high heels!), bassist/singer Mr. Rust (the band's founder and web designer) and axe-swinger extraordinaire Baron Murtland – share some thoughts about black-gloved killers, ultra-fast beats, and their enviable collaboration with Italian prog-rock legend (and founder of Goblin and Daemonia) Claudio Simonetti. Dig it!

FEARnet: What led you to start incorporating horror movie concepts into your music?

MISS RANDALL: Horror movies have always played an important role in our music, and they've always been as influential for us as music itself. Lyrically, every song has been written from an existentialist or metaphorical perspective, but this time with Possessor we explored darker places, the horror themes being much more evident. Metal is to music as Horror is to film. To us the horror thing is not a gimmick, it’s our lifestyle.

You're so well-versed within the different horror genres, I’ll bet you’ve got some pretty interesting films in your collections… what are some of your favorites?

MR. RUST: Phantasm, Friday the 13th (all of them), Scanners and Rosso Sangue, to name a few…

MISS RANDALL: Suspiria, The Beyond, Macabre, Deathdream, Hellraiser, Buio Omega, Shock, Demons, Happy Birthday to Me, Dellamorte Dellamore, Don’t Go in the House

BARON MURTLAND: Zombi 2, Evil Dead 2 and Fido.

Miss Randall, you told me you're also a big giallo fan... which Italian thrillers are on your short list?

MISS RANDALL: What Have you Done to Solange?, Amuck, Perversion Story, Spasmo, Stage Fright and Tenebrae.

Have you had a chance to see Dario Argento's Giallo yet? He's already caught a lot of heat on that one, but that’s nothing new.

MISS RANDALL: I haven’t heard positive things either… but still, I’ll go see it. You see, Argento is like Metallica: even if the latest stuff isn’t quite as you expected, it’s still Metallica, and you’ll still buy it. Same goes for Argento in this case.

Good point, I'll be seeing it too. Speaking of Argento... I'm excited to hear the contributions of Claudio Simonetti on Possessor – including my favorite cut, Mondo Cane. How did you manage to hook up with him, and how exactly was he involved?

MR. RUST: The Goblin influence has been stated on music reviews, and many times after shows people would come up and say: "I can tell you like Goblin!” so we knew that working with Claudio would be a good match. Miss Randall got in touch with him a couple of years back through common friends in metal bands and he was very pleased to hear about us. We believe he did a great job.

MISS RANDALL: Claudio is a great person, a super cool guy. We've been in touch for over three years and he was kind enough to do this as a friend, didn't even charge me. I'm also huge into Prog Rock and I consider him like the Italian Keith Emerson. I feel more than honored, and could die a happy gal now… well not just yet. Kidding, but ya know what I mean.

The album art for Possessor is so perfectly metal... how did you hook up with artist Joe Petagno?

MR. RUST: We initially tried to hire a “hip” contemporary artist that paints and plays in a contemporary semi-known band, but he turned us down because we didn’t match his trendy music taste. That disappointing event made us change our minds and turn to someone who related to our musical roots, a more seasoned illustrator from the older school of art – that is Joe Petagno. We got in touch with him and told him about the concept we were looking for, and he delivered the Possessor cover.

Rusty Eye

You've got videos in the works for Serial Kind and Mondo Cane. What can we expect to see in those?

MISS RANDALL: We will start getting some footage this year, but we still need an extra hand to film them. Mondo Cane will depict footage from Mexico City’s most gruesome parts, and Serial Kind – in contrast to Mr. Cannibal – will have Miss Randall as the leather-gloved killer.

You've reworked your official site in some innovative ways to coincide with the album release…

MR. RUST: We have years of making music with a DIY approach, benefiting from the powers of the Internet since its early stages (we were one of the first bands to ever have a band site). Nowadays, the internet has become more of the same... if you make your songs MP3s and put them up on a music jukebox type of player, you’re not offering anything to your audience, and it's going to be very hard to get their attention while they’re sitting in front of the computer staring at images or just text at a Facebook site.

Describe your new approach...

MR. RUST: We found a solution to add value to the experience: it's basically a video player that controls three movies simultaneously (one for each band member), and we play the whole album entirely, but you can make your song selection as well.

MISS RANDALL: We performed all of the songs, each of us, with like 10 different angles, so in fact we edited 39 music videos in all… crazy!

MR. RUST: This whole technology shift has never been about converting songs to MP3s – it’s about converting the CD to the Internet itself. So we developed an interactive multimedia gateway to introduce new listeners to our musical world… that sure beats a CD booklet or a MySpace. We’re also very positive that as soon as our website comes out, every signed band is going to rip off the idea, specially the ones supported by labels. This will be our written testimonial that we did it first, and that we did it without the help of a new media department.

I’m glad you chose us to get the truth out there! So how did you bring the band’s whole visual concept to what we see today? I particularly dig the grindhouse feel to a lot of your imagery.

MR. RUST: Rusty Eye's art has been ever-evolving over the years, so it's become an entity of its own. When I do artwork for Rusty Eye, it all comes naturally. There's a lot of Grindhouse influence indeed, since I've always been a fan of that type of poster art.

I also noticed a comic-book style to a lot of your images…

MR. RUST: I wouldn't consider myself a comic type of guy, but I always like doing tracing with vectors and that gives you a comic book feel.

What’s your background in visual arts?

MR. RUST: I started doing art for Rusty Eye at the exact time the band was formed and eventually went to art school. During that time I did art exhibits and sold digital art and photography… later on I decided just to focus my art on the music.

Miss Randall, you've got the distinction of being one of the world's fastest drummers. What's your secret?

MISS RANDALL: Oh it’s funny, ever since I started playing I got myself a double pedal and that was my main focus. I took some drumming classes, after a year of starting out, and that created a discipline of warming up – as if running – prior to playing. The competition I entered a couple of years back was just for fun. It’s nice to be considered “Mrs. Fast feet” and all that, but what counts is what you do to follow the music, arms and feet, independently.

Is it true that you pretty much mastered the skins in about six months?

MISS RANDALL: It’s true, I’m not kidding when I say that I literally learned to keep a steady beat in 6 months – which eventually got me the gig with Rusty Eye, after I learned all their songs. That early stiffness of the beginner is what left throughout the years, and now I just have loads of fun. Drums are fun!

You embrace frightening and gruesome concepts in your music and visuals, but we'd like to know what really scares you. What's your greatest fear?

MISS RANDALL: Perhaps we fear the oppressive burden of time. We have so many projects and ideas, and the thought of never being able to fully fulfill them, or being acknowledged about what we’ve done in our lifetime, is rather scary.

Now, I’m not one for exaggeration so you can take this as gospel truth; this emission by a three-piece out of Hollywood, California will be by some considerable margin the most unique sound you’ll hear anytime soon.

Mixed by Jeremy Blair (Guns N’ Roses, Fear Factory) and produced by Miss Randall; the band’s drummer and singer, it also benefits from the work of legendary Italian composer Claudio Simonetti whose impressive film canon stretches to seminal work like George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

Not content with that, the band have also called in a guest appearance from Circus of Power’s Alex Mitchell and have appropriately grisly album artwork carved out by Joe Petagno of Motorhead renown.

rusty eye possessor album artwork thrash hits new romero

The result is a technically bewildering array of tracks, each one akin to a short horror movie with the kind of macabre and baroque overtones you’d find in the darkest recess of Tim Burton’s mind. Take opener ‘At the house by the cemetery’ for example, where we’re instantly reminded how good Iron Maiden’s debut was and that ear for the progressive is present elsewhere too underpinned by a rock-solid tightness which belies their three-piece status.

Poles apart is ‘Mondo Cane’ which owes more of a debt to thrash with a wild combination of black metal rasps mixed with Miss Randall’s tuneful but extremely scary harmonies – insanely unusual. It ends with the howl of a Police siren and that, given what’s just transpired, is not the only emergency service that’s needed. ‘Poisoned Letter’ is of more restrained tempo but carries no less menace with Miss Randall again trading vocal duties with what sounds like Satan himself in a disturbing tale of revenge; violent one would assume.

Elsewhere you’ll find other gems like ‘11.02 Day of The Dead’ which powers along with an infectious riff en-route to a killer mid–section and the utterly bewildering ‘Somnambulist Possession’, which, apart from recalling early Rush, offers a short, killer guitar solo which more than makes up for the somewhat confusing song title.

Attempts to jam all of this into any kind of pigeon-hole will only lead to disappointment, and that in itself is only one of the many pluses that this unique record has to offer. Focusing on themes of lost perception and drawing hugely from the classic horror movie genre; Rusty Eye have come up with something completely new while maintaining a healthy grip on some of the best of metal’s past.
Dial in the considerable weight of individual enthusiasm and technical expertise that they bring to the table and there’s surely much more to come; a fact not lost on the LA Music awards who voted their 2006 video ‘Mr Cannibal’ Best Metal single.

4.5/6

Sounds like: early Maiden, early Rush and a host of NWOBHM others…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Claudio Simonetti, Waldemar Sorychta, Alex Mitchell To Guest On New RUSTY EYE Album 'Possessor' - Mar. 11, 2009

Hollywood, CA-based Progressive Metal trio RUSTY EYE is putting the finishing touches on its eagerly awaited new album 'Possessor'. Recorded at Temple Studios in Chatsworth, CA, the album will feature 13 brand new songs, mixed by seasoned engineer Jeremy Blair (GUNS N' ROSES, FEAR FACTORY) and produced by Miss Randall, Rusty Eye’s imaginative drummer and vocalist.

The album features the work of  acclaimed Italian horror film composer Claudio Simonetti (GOBLIN, DAEMONIA), best known for creating the score to George Romero’s legendary film “Dawn of The Dead”; former Grip Inc. guitarist and Tiamat/Lacuna Coil producer Waldemar Sorychta; and Alex Mitchell, vocalist from famed NY sleaze-rockers Circus Of Power. The cover art will feature the gruesome art of Joe Petagno, best known for his work with metal legends Motörhead.

'Possessor' is set for independent release in Spring 2009 on Epoché Records. The album showcases the band’s unique blend of differing metal styles and sounds — influenced by horror films — combined with observant compositions underpinned with messages about the continuing “corrosion of perception” as implied by the band’s name.

Rusty Eye was formed by Mr. Rust Mexico City in 1995. Miss Randall joined in 2003, and in 2004 the band relocated to their current Hollywood home. Current Line up: Mr. Rüst (bass & vocals), Miss Randall (drums & vocals), and Baron Murtland (guitars).

RUSTY EYE
From Mexico, with Metal
Story: Charlie Steffens

Some people's fascination with Hollywood has nothing to do movie stars
or bogus reality TV. The motivation for Rusty Eye bassist/vocalist Mr.
Rust and drummer/vocalist Ms. Randall to leave Mexico City and move to
Hollywood is a more inspiring story. While the metaphorical meaning of
Rusty Eye is something about the corrosion of perception, these two
musicians' ambition has been clear-eyed. Both became U.S. citizens and
graduated from Musicians Institute, and while working day jobs,
continuously wrote and recorded new music, playing gigs on the fabled
Sunset Strip and in the other sordid clubs of Los Angeles. Along with
the guitarist Tony "The Baron" Murtland, this thrash/progressive power
trio is gaining recognition as a serious act, not just some band with a
hot-looking chick drummer.

Mr. Rust, who was born in Tucson, AZ, formed Rusty Eye in Mexico City in
1995. Back to his early days, Rust, a guy who expressed himself freely,
was destined for greatness, or infamy. He'd been kicked out of Catholic
School as a pre-teen because they thought he was a Satanist. A
well-read, humorous, and soft-spoken dude off stage, the Eye's front man
is a maniac onstage.

"It's very radical to sing in English." Rust explains about the Mexican
scene. "It's culturally disrespectful, Mexican bands have to sing in
Spanish. There are underground bands who sing in English, but that's
attached to a certain niche, like traditional death metal, black metal.
We weren't part of the underground metal thing, we weren't part of the
mainstream rock thing. We were in between."

Ms. Randall's story is inspiring for any aspiring musician. For the last
two years the annual NAMM Convention in Anaheim, she has amazed the
attendees (many of whom are veteran drummers), and in 2007, Randall was
a finalist in the "World's Fastest Drummer" contest. To see and hear her
behind the kit during one of the band's lacerating shows makes you
wonder how she became so good so quickly. And the girl can sing, whether
as a lead melodic vocal, or a guttural death growler complementing Mr.
Rust. Randall's extraordinarily talented, and she's consequently been
sought out by self-serving A&R people who'd like her to put down the
drumsticks and front an all-girl band.

"I've been a prog head since I was 14," explains Randall, who cites Rush
drummer Neil Peart as being the one who made her want to pick up the
sticks. "I was always inclined to the percussion thing. In 2002 I met
the Rusty Eye guys and they needed a drummer, and I was like "Well, I'm
going to learn." They believed in me, I got he drum set and started
playing, and after six months I learned all the songs and I finally
joined the band."

Tony Murtland, aka "The Baron" is a Virginia transplant and the
unalloyed American of the trio. Oddly, Murtland admits to being a jazz
nerd, while he claims the late, great guitarist Chuck Schuldiner [Death]
was most influential to him growing up.

Currently, Rusty Eye is working on new material for their forthcoming
independent album - a follow-up to their 2006 release Stendhal
Syndrome - which is due to come out this summer.

RUSTY EYE Release Fulci-esque Macabre Music Video For Award Winning Single "Mr. Cannibal"

DATELINE: OCTOBER 29, 2007 | Daniel Metcalf Public Relations

LOS ANGELES, CA / TACOMA, WA - (NOVEMBER 5TH, 2007 DMPR) - Rusty Eye is certainly a rare breed in today's Metal scene. With 12 years of creating an auditory establishment under their own independent belts (a fifth album in the works), LA-based Rusty Eye has been rising slowly, but strategically upward, in today's anemic and monochromatic musical landscape.

Their latest career accomplishment is a controversial, Lucio Fulci-esque music video for the NWOBHM-influenced single "Mr. Cannibal", winner of the LA Music Awards: "Best Metal Single 2006". The high-budget video (filmed on 16 mm.) was directed, co-produced, and financed by Alejandro Ordoñez. Some of the established names that worked in this high-budget production are: cinematographer/director of photography Eric Leach (Otis E., Living Hell, Cabin Fever), editor Johnny Bachelier at King Cut Editorial (Fronterz), colorist/co-producer Bryan Robbins (Something's Wrong in Kansas), and Production Designer Chante Pradella.

Having shared stages with bands such as DORO, VIXEN, VEINS OF JENNA, KATATONIA, and MOONSPELL, Rusty Eye delivers an eclectic sui generis brand of music which attracts a diverse audience - mostly listeners of Heavy Rock, Punk, Progressive, and Thrash Metal – along with horror movie enthusiasts as well.

Rusty Eye's music is available on Apple iTunes, Century Media Distro, and Super D One-Stop Int. Distributors (Cdbaby.com).

Pick up a copy of Highwire Daze Issue #107 for a kick ass review on the Rusty Eye show at Club Vodka with the legendary Vixen.

Text Version:

Vixen/Rusty Eye
Knitting Factory Hollywood
April 28, 2007

Review and Photos by Kenneth Morton

Club Vodka is well known for bringing in the legendary 80's metal bands that many have a secret affinity for. On this particular Saturday night, venerable Los Angeles locals Vixen were in the headlining slot, and it was their first hometown show in quite some time.

There were many other bands that performed all day long prior to Vixen taking the stage. All three rooms of the Knitting Factory had various forms of metal and hard rock entertainment, including a rather trippy Alice Cooper cover band. The highlight of all the bands surely had to be Rusty Eye, whose innovative take on thrash metal is certainly "eye opening". Originating from Mexico City in 1995, the Los Angeles power trio was in the main room performing tracks from their recently released Stendhal Syndrome CD. Opening the set with the dynamic Birds Of Prey, the audience was instantly attentive to the thrashing sounds this three piece had to offer. Meshing in all sorts of musical styles ranging from death metal, punk rock, and beyond. Rusty Eye has created a distinct sound that fascinates as well as keeps their audiences guessing. Mr. Rust on bass and vocals and Dr. Deth on guitars and backing vocals are the forefront of the stage, intriguing the audience with their virtuoso musicianship and wildly unpredictable playing.

Miss Randall is in the back performing on drums at a frenetic, yet dazzling pace, and supplying many of the lead vocals. Alternating between clear singing and Angela Gossow-like growling, Miss Randall is a definitive force to be reckoned with. One of the most exciting bands to emerge out of the local extreme metal scene, you'll be hearing a lot more from Rusty Eye in the future. Be sure to check the show with metal legend Doro at the Whisky on June 20th...

MetalRaw.COM Review of "Stendhal Syndrome" in Venezuela

Few bands lack a definition as far as style goes when trying to label them because they go for original signature sounds. Such is the case of Rusty Eye, part Punk-Metal, part Extreme Metal, and other ingredients that make them unique and incomparable if you try to fit them on to a specific style. Rusty Eye's career started in Mexico (founded by bassist/singer Mr Rust) and it's been a couple years since they been in Los Angeles where they have been developing an impressive local buzz playing non-stop in the Angeleno circuit in venues such as The Key Club (with Metal Skool), Knitting Factory (with The Big Ball Stars) and the world famous Whisky A Go Go (with Moonspell and Katatonia).
"Stendhal Syndrome" is the latest release cut by these talented young artists, and a shortly before it's release they put out a live album "Live at The Joint MMVI". "Stendhal Syndrome" is actually a double feature, the first is new material (five songs) and the second is older material that was not released previously in full length format (three songs from the "Cryogenic" 3" Ep). One of the particularities of Rusty Eye is that the vocals are mainly in charge of drummer Miss Randall (the only female member in the band) and are wisely mixed with bassist Mr. Rust's vocals. It's worth mentioning that besides her instrumental participation, Miss Randall is also in charge of the Production of this opus. In a nutshell, you'd appreciate the accelerated rhythms, the raw multi-style vocals and the very metallic guitar sounds. If you like Motorhead, Rusty Eye should drive you crazy!
