In the early morning hours of August 5th, after receiving a tip-off from one of their informants, the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team set out for Battambang Province in a remote region of Cambodia to look for two Asiatic black bears suspected of being held at a wildlife trader's house. After arriving at a small village, the team quickly moved to the rear of a house they suspected of holding the two bears. There they found an oxcart, or wagon, which at first appeared to be empty but on closer inspection revealed two bear cubs tied down in a narrow space underneath the cart. Watch the rescue of two Asiatic black bears in this sequence of short video clips. (Warning: These videos contain graphic images of wounds the bears sustained while being held in captivity.) The 4-month-old cubs, a male and female, were frightened, dehydrated, and suffering from multiple snare wounds. Both had lost a paw. Knowing that the bears might be injured, a veterinarian from the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center accompanied the rescue team to the house and immediately sedated the bears so they could be removed from the cart and treated. As their wounds were being cleaned, the bears whimpered in their sleep, a haunting sound that underscored the seriousness of their injuries. After giving the cubs antibiotics, the vet gently dressed their wounded limbs to protect them from further infection. In the video, the male cub, recovering from the sedative and nibbling on a banana, appears to have regained some of his strength. However, the female cub, whose injuries looked older, remained extremely weak, and it wasn't immediately clear if she would survive. Both cubs were taken to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, where they are recovering slowly. After watching the rescue video, please help us stop wildlife traders and unnecessary animal cruelty by making a tax-deductible donation in support of our Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team!

The fight to save the polar bear heats up right after Labor Day. Help us win.
Our Single Best Chance to Save the Polar Bear
Alaska’s polar bears will die off by 2050 unless we take action now.
Your donation will be instantly doubled by a matching gift!
The fate of the polar bear could be decided after Labor Day in both federal court and the U.S. Senate. Your emergency gift will help NRDC fight for polar bear survival.
SGive polar bears their best chance at survival
Abel,
Our fight to save the polar bear will shift into high gear after Labor Day -- both in court and in Congress. This may be our single best chance to prevent the complete die-off of polar bears in this century.

That's why I'm asking for your emergency contribution -- which will be instantly matched dollar-for-dollar by a generous NRDC Trustee up to $250,000 -- to help us win this all-out battle for the polar bear's survival.

Your doubled gift is urgently needed to help us fight on two critical fronts:

1) We are already in federal court challenging Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's decision to stop the government from using vital Endangered Species Act protections to save the polar bear from global warming pollution and rampant Arctic oil development.

2) When the U.S. Senate returns from recess in September, the fight to save the polar bear will heat up to a fever pitch on Capitol Hill. The Senate must determine whether our country adopts the tough legislation needed to control the global warming pollution that mortally threatens the polar bear and is melting the Arctic.

Make no mistake: this will be a bruising battle. While we won a key victory when the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which aims to cut global warming pollution by 83% by 2050, the toughest fight lies ahead in the Senate.

We expect Exxon Mobil, Peabody Coal, and a vocal contingent of global warming deniers on Capitol Hill to pull out all stops to defeat the Senate bill. We simply cannot allow them to prevail and doom the polar bear to oblivion in the process.

We must ensure that the Senate strengthens and advances a strong global warming bill to save the polar bear -- and so many other species -- from extinction.

That's why I'm asking you to send an emergency donation right now to help NRDC advocate for the polar bear both in federal court and in Congress -- and defend our environment in the most effective way possible.

Remember, your donation will be instantly matched -- doubling the impact of the action you take today.

Swift action has never been more critical since two-thirds of the world's polar bear population is likely to go extinct by 2050 -- including all of Alaska's polar bears.

Clearly, it's time for all of us who care about the polar bear -- and about sparing our planet from the devastation of global warming -- to make our support felt.

Let me know I can count on you at this critical juncture for polar bear survival.

Sincerely,
Frances

Maggie Q speaks out for bears!

Dear abel,

I have some exciting news to share with you! We’ve just launched a new video message starring Hollywood actress Maggie Q!

And equally exciting, the community service announcement – in which Maggie calls for an end to bear farming in Vietnam – has already been picked up by major TV channels for broadcast free-of-charge around the Asia-Pacific over the next 12 months. Lovely Maggie, who is our Moon Bear Rescue Ambassador for Vietnam, very kindly recorded the clip for us in Los Angeles during a break in her crazy schedule recently. Maggie visited our bear sanctuary near Hanoi earlier this year and it’s clear that she’s a committed animal- lover – as well as being a lot of fun! We’re so thrilled and proud to have her on board.
Here’s what she had to say about Vietnam’s bile industry:

“I see bear bile farming as a stain on the history of this country, but one that can be wiped clean if we all work together to end this awful trade. The Vietnamese Government has come a long way in officially banning bear farming, but now it needs to go a step further by ensuring the ban is enforced.

“It’s not just the officials that need to act. We can all do our bit. Consumers of bear bile can switch to herbal or synthetic alternatives, teenagers can tell their parents about the cruelty involved in bear farming, and traditional medicine practitioners can refuse to sell products made from endangered species like moon bears.”

To watch Maggie’s video message, please click here.

A very big thank you to two generous Hong Kong media executives who donated their time and amazing talent to the project. The script was written by Charles Edwards of The Media Village and creative director Patrick Tom. Editing and post-production of the clip was also provided by The Media Village.

So far, the message is due to air on National Geographic, CNN and Discovery. These TV chan-nels have generously donated this air-time free-of-charge, and media company Mindshare very kindly negotiated and arranged it all – again, for free. This exposure is absolutely invaluable for us and the bears.

We couldn’t have asked for a better ambassador to represent our cause in Vietnam. Maggie’s intelligent, thoughtful approach is perfect for getting across the message that bear bile farming is not only terribly cruel, but also totally unnecessary and harming the country’s image.

Before I sign off, please can I say a huge “thank you” to you too, from all of us at Animals Asia, including of course our bears in Vietnam and China. It’s your continued support and faith that empowers us to do the work we do.

Bear hugs,

Dear abel,

Our annual Honey Money Days are just around the corner – and I’d like to invite you to join in the fun by holding your own event to raise funds for our rescued bears!

This year, all money raised worldwide from our Honey Money Days (named in honour of our rescued bears’ favourite treat) will go towards construction of a new bear house and two adjoining semi-natural enclosures, complete with rock pools and climbing frames, at our Moon Bear Rescue Centre at Chengdu.
Please consider holding a Honey Money Day for the bears this August or September. When, where, how and what you do is up to you – all we ask is that you have fun! You’ll need to register your event through your local Animals Asia office and we’ll send you a Honey Money Day pack to get you started.

As you know, our rescued bears arrive from the bile farms in unimaginably poor health – fragile and skeletal, missing limbs, crippled with arthritis and suffering from a myriad of chronic ailments, including liver cancer.

Those that make it through the months of surgery and rehabilitation need accommodation designed specifically for their needs. The enclosures and bear house, which has 12 dens with four metal hanging-basket beds in each, can accommodate 35-40 bears comfortably. This special environment will give them the care and safety they need as well as the freedom and fun they so deserve.
This is where you come in!

We need to raise US$280,000 to complete this work. Please help us reach our target as soon as possible so more of these majestic, endangered animals can live out their lives as bears, not as machines for producing bile, abused and forgotten.

Take a look at our website for some Honey Money Day ideas! Your contribution will help us to start construction work soon. You can see how your efforts are helping, and track our progress, by checking our online “honey-o-meter”
Have fun planning your very own Honey Money Day! We can’t wait to hear what you’ve got in mind – and neither can the bears!

Bear hugs,

Jill Robinson

PS: I’ll be sending a signed copy of our beautiful book, “Freedom Moon” – with heartfelt thanks from all in the Animals Asia team – to the supporter who raises the most money! Please see here for more.

Photo by Larry AumillerDear Friends of Vital Ground,

I am excited to announce a tremendous conservation opportunity and the launch of Vital Ground’s new Strength of Connections Campaign. This will be Vital Ground’s largest, most ambitious conservation fund raising effort since its founding in 1990. The $2 million campaign will run from now through our 20th anniversary year of 2010.

As we embark on this momentous challenge, we're pleased to report that we have already secured contributions or pledges of nearly $430,000, or close to 22% of our campaign goal. This includes a very generous pledge of support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

This provisional grant—up to $196,000 via the Northwest Wildlife Conservation Initiative—is specifically to help us secure additional grizzly bear habitat at one of Vital Ground’s premier project areas, Bismark Meadows (click to view slideshow), located in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho. The grant requires a 5:1 match and must be met by October 2010.

Please help us respond to this urgent conservation challenge and matching grant opportunity by making a secure online donation to the Strength of Connections Campaign today.

Sincerely,

R. Kiffin Hope
Development & Outreach Coordinator
