Rescue Follow-Up

You've Come A Long Way, Phoebe

All of you faithful supporters know that Saving Shelter Pets works hard to provide a safe intermediary between homeless, helpless animals and the warm, safe forever homes that animal lovers such as yourselves provide. But with the overwhelming number of animals that need rescue, the dire circumstance and real potential of each and every animal can be lost in the long list of transport candidates and continual updates on fundraising initiatives. One member of a transport this past spring, a sweet little female puppy now called Phoebe, demonstrates for us the gift that animal rescue is to each animal and to everyone involved.

Mom, a husky shepherd mix, and her nine little pups were found living in an old abandoned barn in a shallow 'den' dug out of the dirt. It is believed the pups were nine weeks old when discovered. Because of their size and mom's condition when found, they may not have had a whole lot to eat those first two months. Upon rescue, the pups were enrolled in the Puppy Promises program through the local county animal control facility, and meanwhile were cared for by a local foster home. When their transport time came, the pups traveled all the way to New York state to stay in a safe shelter facility and enjoy the last of their time together as littermates.

At this time, a family living in the region was searching for a new companion to welcome into their home. This part of the story is told best by family member Amy Fink...

It had been two years since we lost our beloved Crosby and since we lost him suddenly to cancer, the grieving process was very long. But since we are a dog-loving family, we realized that we wanted to fill that hole in our hearts and welcome a puppy into our home. We really wanted to adopt a rescue puppy this time around. We started perusing the local shelter websites. Then my daughter found petfinder.com. It wasn't long before we discovered Vanilla and her pups in our search.

Those little blonde bundles of snuggliness just tugged at our heartstrings! We made the hour and a half trek to Corinth, NY, and were lead upstairs to where the litter was. It was amazing to see the internet picture come to life before our eyes! We watched them tumble and roll and jump up to meet us. We picked up a couple of the puppies and just loved holding them! One puppy in particular seemed to take a special liking to us. As soon as my daughter picked her up, she nestled right into her and claimed us! A natural fit, we simply couldn't resist her. We didn't even want to put her down to process the paperwork. She was the perfect blend of perky and content. Her little ears were floppy and her belly was pink and completely hairless! She was a vulnerable little thing and we just wanted to envelope her with the love she deserved. It was nice to meet her mom while we were there, too. She was beautiful and friendly and I promised her I'd take care of her little pup. We named our puppy Phoebe.

Once we welcomed her into our home, I began researching her origin. I became slightly obsessed with wanting to know her birthdate and birth information. I had to know where she came from. I called the shelter back to get more specific information, which is when they told me about Saving Shelter Pets. A couple google searches and I found the blog that showed the transport that Vanilla and her pups were a part of! I couldn't wait to contact you and find out any more info about her. And then to find out her heart-wrenching story of how she was found and rescued made us really lay on the TLC thick! I am happy to report that today Phoebe is a healthy, playful, extremely loved member of our family!

And she's a far cry from the little 7 pound bundle we found at the shelter that day in mid-April. A couple more ounces and she'll hit 25 pounds! And she just earned her certificate for successfully completing an 8-week training class where she enjoyed playing with lots of doggy friends. She can sit, stay, and 'come here' pretty well! She loves squeaky toys and tennis balls...but most of all she still loves to snuggle.

Phoebe started out being born in the dirt in an old barn with lots of siblings and a loving mother, but little else. Now she has a plenty of food, a roof over her head and a doting family of her own. Here at Saving Shelter Pets, we sincerely wish for every animal everywhere to have such a loving family with which to spend their days. That's why we're working hard on every transport and every fundraiser to reach out to as many compassionate friends as possible. We want as many animals as possible to experience the 'happy ending' that Phoebe enjoys today.

Thanks friends for your support of animal rescue and advocacy!
