Say Bok Gwai - "Chink in the Armor" - Edgetone Records

San Francisco's Say Bok Gwai is back for a second round with their sophmore album "Chink in the Armor." Self declarded "Canto-core," the band mixes punk, metal, hardcore and little bit of expermental into the furious mix of sometimes serious, sometimes not, unique music. Vocals go back and forth from Cantonese to English and are often not exactly for the PC minded. Just like the last album, it's a tough swallow at first but after repeated listenings I found the band has quite a lot to offer. Also, like the last album, my main complaint is the recording quality which doesn't do the songs or the band justice. If you're into bands like Spazz, Dead Kennedys, D.R.I, etc and have an open mind for some original music check out Say Bok Gwai. Their myspace page is at myspace.com/sbg.

SAY BOK GWAI – Chink In The Armor

Punk and doom metal, hardcore and splatter. The whole sung in English and Cantonese, to create a new genre: CantoCore. The duo of Alex Yeung (guitar, bass, vocals) and Andre Custodio (drums, vocals, electronics), Say Bok Gwai present 31 mostly short tracks in which they show a remarkable technical command – the overdriven mess hides nice chops. A lot of positive energy, screaming lyrics, power chords and “terrifying scales 101” a go-go, powerful drumming. Everything very funny and in some case exciting, the only exception being that several of the pieces sounds too similar, causing a little bit of humdrum to kick in after about half an hour, which would have been the perfect length for an album like this instead of its over 50 minutes. Otherwise, amusing stuff.

Say Bok Gwai – Chink In The Armor {Edgetone / Monkey King}

Gotta give it up for duos that destroy like Population Reduction, Lightning Bolt, Big Business, No Age, Pink & Brown, I Will Kill You Fucker and SAY BOK GWAI without a doubt!  This San Francisco Canto-core terror twosome (guitarist & vocalist Alex Yeung plus Andre Custodio on drums & vox) unleash thrashing metal, noise rock, & hardcore punk plus a bit’o animalistic screeches bizarro segues with vulgar hilarity & foul mouthed criticisms sung in spastically nasal English & Cantonese.  They touch on silly stereotypes, national & personal politics, consumer whorism, the idiocy of white America, stickin’ it to religion, takin’ pride in being Chinese American, dissing corporate music and diggin’ on frozen taquitos.  Songs are super short fast blasts o’ hardcore with more moderate metal moments.  Energetic Asian Explosion

This week the best new things we've been listening to were...
ALBUM OF THE WEEK
SAY BOK GWAI – Chink In The Armor (Edgetone) – CantoCore? That's what they said, "the only CantoCore band in existence" is what they actually say, who are we to argue? They're from San Francisco (of course), they sing in both Cantonese and English, they mix up fast American hardcore, slices of old school thrash metal, some straight down the line US punk, and now again a healthy experimental edge. They sound like they should be on Alternative Tentacles and touring with Jello's latest band (no disrespect to Edgetone of course). They say they're coming at it with a Chinese American perspective unique to San Francisco – they certainly sound like they could be from nowhere else but the Bay Area, this is classic front line top quality San Francisco punk rock. Thirty one short sharp right on the ball tracks played with colour and imagination. Lyrics that bait, lyrics that bite, slices of humour, slices of frozen pizza, slices of clever comment, anger, situation switching and don't get all hung up just because you're a whitey, its only a colour! We're talking a more than healthy mix of Minor Threat, Dead Kens, DRI, a touch of Slayer, that occasional experimental edge and that extra thing that could only come from, well, could only come from a Chinese punk band slamming out of San Francisco. Thry seem ot be a drum andgutar two piece, there older stuff appears to come from a more of an avante area, seems we have a lot of exploring to do, isn't music great, is that a music stand on stage? Don't you just love You Tube - highly recommended.- www.myspace.com/sbg or www.edgetonerecords.com or www.monkeykingrecords.com and those You Tube things can be found via www.youtube.com/monkeykingrecords

Just barely released and there is already controversy for Say Bok Gwai's new CD "Chink in the Armor". Go to your iTunes store and type Say Bok Gwai or Chink in the Armor.

iTunes has censored the title of the Cd with * marks and has labeled the CD as explicit. Ha ha. What a bunch of clown!
Do they even know the fucking meaning of the phrase "chink in the armor"?
Did they even listen to the fucking songs?
What kind of shit is that?
Who the fuck made the decision to fucking censor our mutherfucking CD titles?
What a bunch of dick sucking cunts! Now that is something to censor.

Thank you iTunes. I am actually happy you did that.
