Myspace knows Ohakune is the Winter Party Capital of New Zealand: Ski, board and toboggan fans from all over the world flock to the Turoa slopes by day and and rock the tiny township hard ‘apres’ the snowy action. So what better place for a very special MySpace secret show than in Ohakune.
Four awesome, home-grown acts were bussed in for the Myspace pop-aganza and played until the wee small hours while ski-bunnies and snow-freaks danced the night away.
The lucky Myspacers who packed out the intimate venue were treated to the lounge-soul-folk stylings of Auckland 3 piece, Panther and the Zoo, whose low-fi poetry and tender song-smithing set the tone for the night. But the night soon changed direction and the heat rarked up a notch or twenty when the electro-grunge shenanigans of Brand New Math got the crowd pogoing with tunes like kids show jingles smashed face first into New York City, circa 1978.
The crowd went crazy when the indie darlings, Street Chant, took to the mics next and delivered their own brand of riot grrrl infused, DIY, guitar angst.
But it was the post-shoe-gazing romance of The Ruby Suns who gave the perfect snow drift muffled sound track to a night under clear, starlit winter skies.

On a cold winters day fiercely loyal fans of Smashproof turned up at 4pm to make sure they were the first in the door to see NZ’s number one Hip Hop trio perform a MySpace Secret Show. The location, the Montcristo Room in downtown Auckland. Following the phenomenal success of their first album ‘The Weekend’ which was in the Top 10 of the NZ Album chart in first 5 weeks of release, and their hit single ‘Brother’, which spent a record-breaking 11 consecutive weeks at #1 on the NZ Singles Chart, Smashproof are now a household name. Comprising of Tyree, Young Sid and Deach, these self-described “three young Polynesians from South Auckland with big dreams” first burst onto the scene in 2005 with "Ride Til I Die". Fans were treated to an intimate show by the boys, and those fans who turned up in Puma gear were also given access to a VIP pre-show party rubbing shoulders with Smashproof and guests. By the number of females up the front of the stage it was clear these boys are popular with the ladies, but more than that they proved that they could prove their ability to translate their songs live. The highlight was definitely ‘Brother’ which they played towards the end of the set before fans ripped the limited edition Smashproof Secret Show posters off the wall and got the band to sign them. Thanks to Smashproof. Puma, Aaron and Justin at Move the Crowd, Glen and all at Montcristo, John Baker, Bob Frisbee, Joanna Alpe, Matty Warmington, James Brown and the fans! Wellington’s teen scenesters turned out in full force on Friday to welcome Auckland Indie Rockers, The Midnight Youth, to the capital for an exclusive, once in a lifetime all ages MySpace secret show at legendary Thistle Hall. Dedicated fans of NZ’s number one band started queuing up for the limited wristbands at 3:30. 'We came straight from school!' one fan said, 'We ARE going to be first in the door! Straight to the front!' The band, gents to a man, hung around to chat with fans after their sound check, with everyone agreeing the chance to meet the guys was 'awesome'.
By 7:30 the queue stretched around the block with anticipation high and excitement building. Fans clamoured for the exclusive wristbands as soon as the doors opened and the lucky first 200 were in the door.
Surprise support was provided by Wellington’s own, The Supermodel Band, who set the tone for the evening with their hip, indie vibe. But the crowd was really amped for Midnight Youth who took to the stage amid a cacophony of teen screams, woof whistles and cheering, like champions into an arena.
The boys ploughed through their hits, exchanging banter with the fans and thanking MySpace for the opportunity to play such a historic venue. “We understand this hall is some kind of Punk Legend,” says lead singer Jeremy, “So we decided to bring a little punk to the show,” before sending the fans into a screaming frenzy with a fast version of their number one hit single, The Letter. But that’s not the only surprise of the night as the boys hit on a crowd pleaser with a cover of Lady Gaga’s Just Dance. Anyone doubting their new kids on the block musical credentials would be eating crow after tonight’s performance though. Midnight Youth are tighter than a big bass drum, lean on effects and heavy on the virtuosity, with Jeremy’s voice pitch perfect and FM clear. They sure know how to show their youngest crowd yet a good time.
There’s nothing short of a good natured scrum after the show when the band stay on to have their photograph’s taken and sign merchandise, including Myspace’s gift to the fans, an exclusive limited edition screen print poster of the gig which will ensure their place in Thistle Hall’s long infamous history. www.myspace.com/kokokabana
Thanks to Midnight Youth, Matt Coleman, Warner Music, Hewlett Packard, Joanna Alpe for photography, Matty Warmington for filming and editing, and all the fans who made it such a special night!

On the eve of NZ Music Month Boh Runga marked the arrival of her first album as a solo artist with an intimate show for her MySpace friends. The show was an opportunity for fans to hear the new songs for the first time with her band in a live and intimate setting, Bacco in Auckland city. Well known from her days as the fiery lead singer and guitarist in successful New Zealand band Stellar* which she fronted for over a decade, the departure from fronting a rock band to solo artist seems a natural progression. In fact it is in these solo songs she played for the crowd which form the basis of her album ‘Right Here’, that we see the strength of her song writing shine through. It is apparent that the last six months of recording in a Hollywood studio have paid off with finely crafted songs, the most popular of these ‘Evelyn’ which the crowd sing along to. It was a very special evening and Boh was more than happy to sign posters at the end of the show and chat to fans. As she later wrote on her MySpace blog ‘thank you everyone that came to the MySpace Secret Show. Was so nice to see some MySpace friends in the flesh!’. With a loyal following and a handbook of finely crafted songs, the world is Boh’s oyster. Thanks to Boh Runga and band, Paul Mckessar and all at CRS Management, Universal Music, Glen and John at Bacco, Joanna Alpe for photography, James Brown for filming, Matty Warmington for editing, and all the fans who made it such a special night! Lower Hutt is 658km from South Auckland and 10,786km from South Central LA, but tonight Myspace Secret Shows brought a little bit of both to the Hutt Valley with a massive all ages gig featuring New Zealand's very own top selling global hip hop artist Savage, and fellow Decepticonz MC, Devolo. Lower Hutt youth centre Secret Level was the secret venue, and kids from around the valley lined up for hours for a chance to see the former South Auckland pair. Supporting them was Wellington beats combo, Beatrootz who warmed the crowd up with their soulful harmonies and beats. Devolo's set, including tracks from his debut solo album, 'Heaven and Hell', threw down some wicked beats and got the crowd up to fever pitch for Savage’s entrance onto the stage. There was excitement in the air as fans anticipated Savage’s arrival and it was well worth the wait. Playing songs off his chart topping album ‘Savage Island’ he treated fans to a blistering set of tracks. There was no doubt that the real crowd pleaser was his raucous rendition of his mammoth hit 'Swing' which the star stopped singing half way through to invite 'the smallest kids in the audience' up on stage with him to finish the song off. It was the most intimate of shows and for all a dream come true to be this close to Savage. Just when fans thought it was over there was more, Savage invited Devolo and Beatrootz to get back on stage for one more song. Fans hung around afterwards waiting for their posters to be signed and chat which Savage and Devolo were who more than happy to accommodate. How many shows like that is the Hutt likely to see? Not many, if any... But for these lucky Hutt Hip-hop fans, tonight is more than enough. Thank you to Savage, Devolo, Beatrooz, Paul, Andy and Brotha D at Dawn Raid, Secret Level, and photographer Dionne Ward and the fans!

It was the line up to end all line ups, a comedy show fronted by none other than Rhys Darby(aka Murray from Flight of the Conchords). Rhys Darby took the stage of Auckland’s The Classic comedy club where he started out on the NZ comedy circuit to present New Zealand's first ever Secret Stand Up Show alongside Brendhan Lovegrove, Jeremy Corbett and Paul Ego! Since his first show ten years ago at The Classic in 1999 Rhys has come a very long way. He has taken the world by storm playing band manager Murray in Flight of the Conchords, has played Jim Carey's boss in Yes Man, is in the soon to be released The Boat That Rocked, and now sells out his stand up shows. Rhys is world famous for his physical comedy and sound effects. It was not surprising then to see fans queued up on Auckland's Queen Street for hours before the doors opened to be part of this free and exclusive show for only 150 people. t was well worth the wait, Rhys presented the crowd with favourites such as Bill Napier the Auckland Park Ranger, his infamous robot impersonation and some material never seen before (check out our video clips!). Holding the torch for NZ Comedy, Rhys introduced his favourite NZ comedians Brendhan Lovegrove, Jeremy Corbett and Paul Ego, and and by the reaction of the audience it was plain to see that the world better watch out! These comedians are in this year’s NZ International Comedy festival and their shows are being produced by Rhys Darby and Rosie Carnahan's Awesomeness International so they may in time just give Rhys a run for the title as funniest man on New Zealand soil! Rhys was on hand after the show to talk, sign autographs and drink with his fans making this a Secret Show few are likely to forget. Thank you to Rhys Darby, Rosie Carnahan, Brendhan Lovegrove, Jeremy Corbett, Paul Ego, C4 , Awesomeness International, Scott and Rachel at The Classic, James and Natalie Brown for videography, Matty Warmington for editing, Joanna Alpe for the photography, kazaamBLAM! for music. A special thanks for all your die hard fans who waited patiently for hours to see the show! Remember to stay tuned to MySpace Secret Shows for details of the next show. Fall Out Boy are the biggest band in the world. In fact right now as far as the die hard kiwi fans standing before them are concerned, Fall Out Boy are the biggest band in their entire universe.
One fan queued up at Real Groovy Records at 10pm the previous night to get a wristband to the soundcheck show, others turned up at 4am. Thanks to MySpace Secret Shows thirty fans had the chance to see Fall Out Boy play one of the most intimate gigs of their career. "I want to play you stuff you won't get to hear tonight" says lead singer Patrick Stump before taking requests and tossing the idea of playing them back and forth with his wing man Pete Wentz. If the screaming coming from the elite audience is anything to go by this is evidently the best idea ever. The boys launch into the loudest request first 'Homesick at Space Camp' and everything after that is a blur of raucous guitars, delighted screams and cheeky banter. It is an event these fans will never forget "This is the best day ever" said one fan as she exited the arena. Thanks for the memories indeed.

What better way to celebrate the Christmas holidays than with an all ages party in a long forgotten Scout Hall on the edge of Auckland city? That is what we decided to do with New Zealand indie stars Die! Die! Die! In a scene not dissimilar to a Famous Five novel, fans turned up to the St Barnabas Scout Hall perched below Mt Eden and found themselves side by side with local orienteering enthusiasts and Girl Guides who were taking advantage of the summer hours. We even spotted Santa Claus taking a stroll (check out the video if you do not believe us!)
First up were the esoteric sounding An Emerald City (www. myspace. com/anemeraldcity) who wooed the audience with their eastern blend of music and diverse instruments such as the sita and a violin. They certainly won a lot of new fans. Following on from this Myspacers were treated to a song from Muso Challenge (insert link www. myspace. com/musochallenge) winner Jamie Gray www. myspace. com/jamiegraymusic before Die! Die! Die! hit the stage with their anarchic stage show. A Die! Die! Die! show is not for the faint hearted and this show was another reminder of why they have the reputation as one of New Zealand’s fierce live acts. The band played to a packed hall of avid fans with crowd favourites such as ‘Sideways here we come’ and their upcoming single ‘People Talk off their 2007 album Promises Promises sending the crowd into overdrive, before leaving the stage before the crowd begged them back for an encore. MySpace merchandise, screen printed posters commemorating the event and cans of V were given out for free to the crowd and both band and fans agreed that there was no better way to celebrate the summer holidays than by putting on a free show for everyone.
Thank you to Die! Die! Die!, An Emerald City, Jamie Gray, VISA Entertainment, John Baker for production, James Brown for videography, Joanna Alpe for photography, and Matty Warmington for editing. Last but not least thank you to the fans for making it another memorable MySpace Secret Show.

There is no denying Fur Patrol are a band firmly held in high and tender esteem for many New Zealanders and so it came as no surprise when a queue of fans weaved its way around the Dux de Lux waiting to see the band perform for free at MySpace’s first Secret Show in Christchurch. One girl told us she had just flown in from Dubai and would not miss the opportunity to see their MySpace Secret Show for the world.
The show was a complete sell out, the venue reached capacity forcing us to regrettably turn away some fans. The crowd was a mix of young and old reflecting the bands 12 year presence in the hearts of New Zealand music fans, and proving that they are a band who transcends trends.
Support came from local band Tiny Paper Daggers, who were chosen by Fur Patrol when the band checked out their MySpace page, and with a brilliant live set they are definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.
Fur Patrol took the stage playing songs mainly off their freshly released third album Local Kid including recent singles Hidden Agenda and Great Leap Forward. It was the first time many fans had seen the band pared down to a three piece, and they proved beyond a doubt that they are still one of New Zealand’s best live bands.
Fur Patrol put on an outstanding show for all, their live set has certainly lost none of its intensity, Julia Deans vocals never fail to get trapped inside your head, and the new songs show that the band continue to grow as song writers.
After an amazing encore fans started lining up at the foot of the stage to get the band to sign their limited edition Fur Patrol posters, in fact it would be much more apt to call what we witnessed as a signing frenzy.
These fans were some of the most passionate we have ever seen at a MySpace Secret Show!

After a stunning performance at the NZ Music Awards the night before, Cut Off Your Hands fans queued down Karangahape Road in the bands native city of Auckland for the chance to see the band at an intimate MySpace Secret Show.
Warming up the crowd before the band hit the stage were DJ Dan Mancini and Speak n Spell's Dave Benge spinning the decks. The band who have been touring extensively through Europe packed the largely unused venue Bacio to a room of expectant fans eager to hear songs off their newly released debut album 'You and I'. Cut Off Your Hands pleased the crowd with favourites such as their first single 'Oh Girl' and 'Expectations' alongside a special treat with an unreleased song 'You Still Love Me'. Lead singer Nick Johnston's reputation as a rather wild front man did not disappoint the crowd, when not beating the big drum beside him like his life depended on it he could often be found diving into the crowd. After a tight and electrifying set the band left the stage to arrive back shortly after with an encore performed just by two members Nick and Michael with the song 'Someone Like Daniel'. All who were there agreed that there was a lot of excitement in the air, and the band followed this up by being around afterwards to sign the beautiful and original screen printed posters for fans.
MySpace would like to thank Cut Off Your Hands for an outstanding show, Dave Benge, John Baker, photographer Milana Radojcic, James Brown, Matty, Dan Mancini, Vahalla Studios, Steven at Bacio and all the fans who made it such a memorable show.
