THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

___________________________________________________________
For Immediate Release                                     June 1, 2009

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2009
- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

LGBT Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society. There are many well-respected LGBT leaders in all professional fields, including the arts and business communities. LGBT Americans also mobilized the Nation to respond to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and have played a vital role in broadening this country's response to the HIV pandemic.

Due in no small part to the determination and dedication of the LGBT rights movement, more LGBT Americans are living their lives openly today than ever before. I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration. These individuals embody the best qualities we seek in public servants, and across my Administration -- in both the White House and the Federal agencies -- openly LGBT employees are doing their jobs with distinction and professionalism.

The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.

My Administration has partnered with the LGBT community to advance a wide range of initiatives. At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans. These measures include enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and our national security. We must also commit ourselves to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic by both reducing the number of HIV infections and providing care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS across the United States.

These issues affect not only the LGBT community, but also our entire Nation. As long as the promise of equality for all remains unfulfilled, all Americans are affected. If we can work together to advance the principles upon which our Nation was founded, every American will benefit. During LGBT Pride Month, I call upon the LGBT community, the Congress, and the American people to work together to promote equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America , by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States , do hereby proclaim June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

"no matter what happened today, as our youth grows and gets the power to vote, hate props like these will be a thing of the past, I know I am on the right side of history and it is only a matter of time when our great country starts doing the right thing. Years ago woman couldn't vote, blacks and whites weren't free to marry peacefully and like those prejudices this to will one day change, equality will ring true for all.

I wanted to share with some of my fans and even critics about some of my actions lately, because I am finding, even making statements to the press at this point are being jumbled and misconstrued, It floors me to this day, how people can take smidgets of a something they read or see on TV and make MASSIVE and elaborate stories in their heads, scary. The only time I feel I can stand behind what I say is when I write it myself, so there is no confusion... I have had threats upon my life, my friends, my business partners, my children, threats upon their heritage, the fact one is mexican, thou I am considered white, my mother is latin and has had her share of discrimination being from a poor farming family that immigrated to this country from Portugal. Just so it is clear I was born into a catholic family, but no longer believe in organized religion. I am VERY spiritual. I pray and talk to god every night. Let me make that clear GOD with a capital G, as I have been corrected. Thank you christians... I do LOVE you for that!

I have recently took a look at my life, as I was challenged at what I would like to be remembered for, would it be winning a TITLE at 19? I really in my heart don't believe there is such thing as a TITLE....but for the sake of argument, would it be for Miss RI Teen USA?, Miss Teen All American?, Miss New York USA,? Miss USA?, Oscar de la hoya Fiance?,Miss December 2001?, Travis Barkers Wife... ? do any of these TITLES define me??????? No. What is in a title? only the power "I" give it.

I am much more powerful and much to complex for any title to define, and so are you. It took me 30 years to learn that.

I looked back on my teen years that have influenced me, friends and men who have inspired me, who have coached and spent endless hours of time supporting me, and  MANY of those men were gay. I was a competitive skater, I spent days and nights in a rink... working with coaches and friends, young and old and from that experience ALONE I can say GAY is NOT a CHOICE! I am a American Gold medalist and Regional and National placing champion. I did numerous pageants, I was from a SMALL town in Rhode Island, my coach, who helped me learn to interview, to walk , to talk, Dennis Shelto... is GAY and I LOVE and admire him so much! with his guidance I was able to model in Boston, Miami, NY, and LA.. VERY successfully.I appeared with heidi Klum in Hamptons to Cosmo to YM, I can't say thank you ENOUGH to all the gay men and woman who pushed for me. My point? There is NO secret agenda for me. It is a REAL life LOVE and gratitude for the mentors that NEVER identified themselves by their sexuality but for their love of what we were working towards. They to will FOREVER be part of my FAMILY.

With that I looked back on MY biological family... what a great and beautiful family I was blessed with, and this I WILL attribute to all my success as a individual, not a Hollywood persona, but as a soul, my parents have been married for almost 40 years, they have a love only in fairy tales, they are my heros, they are my strength, and where most would quit, I have them to restore MY faith! so when I am asked, what would I most like to be remembered for... it's only in the thoughts and minds and hearts of my FAMILY, every move I make is with them and In my children.

I was able to share a very special moment with my son yesterday, he asked me what bad words were, most would say Fuck or some other swear, I told him, STUPID and HATE. Those are BAD words. and you should never tell someone they are stupid are that you hate them, He saw my picture for the NOH8 campaign and asked me why I had tape on my mouth, and in 5 year old terms I tried to explain LOVE, I was VERY proud to tell him, that when he grows up, he can LOVE whom ever he choses and I will NOT HATE or think he is STUPID for it.

I don't care what the church, what the internet, haters, critics, what the past, what anyone thinks of me, because MY GOD is a LOVING god, and HE/SHE doesn't judge, we were born with free will for a reason, I believe god ( notice the little "g") celebrates when we use it.

that my friends is how "I" sleep at night!

I want to make it clear that I never brought to the presses attention about Ms. Prejean's Breast Augmentation, Contrary to what has been reported. When confronted I did confirm, I am not going to lie. With that being said, I think this is HER private life and I will end with this statement.

"I personally believe Ms. Prejean's Breasts are her own business, It was a option that she vied for and it was HER choice, regulations about plastic surgery in pageants have not been slated as yet, but I believe what ever choices a woman makes personally to feel better about herself are those of her own, for me Confidence is real beauty and if breast augmentation helps with that. then so be it. "

I will NOT talk about this again. I also don't believe that this has ANYTHING to do with the issues that have been discussed and hope it ends from here on out.

All the best

Ok, when I first started sending Bulletins out about Miss CA USA, you all were like...blah blah blah...skip it, you couldn't be bothered..... now that it has made media attention.. I am getting all these letters! Some good, some bad... I have to admit, about 50/50, I realize some are very proud of our Miss California USA, because she spoke her opinion, and some not so much, how amazing is it that we all can say what's on our mind! THAT is why WE all LOVE this country! I have stated this OVER and OVER again! Some choose to acknowledge it others not so much? on a separate note, I am writing to PLEASE stop writing our sponsors! We do NOT know where they all stand on this very passionate debate and nor should they have to make a stand, NONE have said they agree PRO or NAY on civil rights and NOR should any of them be punished for not knowing the opinions of one person, no matter where our Miss Ca stands she used all these sponsors to get where she stands today weather she agrees with or not. Again THIS is what makes this country GREAT!! and also why we ALL can have a DIFFERENCE of opinion and speak it loudly! MANY want to go to the mattresses on this topic, but for all those people who are appalled by perez hilton's response as a judge I have received 20 TIMES worse on the topic!! I am frankly SHOCKED! your opinions may not be on a famous blog for the world to see but it doesn't make it any less hateful and for what you are trying to make me "see" you are just defusing by your sheer righteousness. No one wants to even acknowledge that we AGREED with her right to have a opinion and celebrated the fact! you were all to ready to punish us, cause our view was different but still up for debate. They keep telling me how proud we should be for her opinion but how shameful we should be for ours. even thou different. I am confused? We still Love Carrie Prejean as a Person, cause that's what she is a PERSON not a pawn. I am simply asking... for everyone to understand that we at Miss California respect and admire ALL walks of life and if you agree or disagree let the people vote, pageants were NOT meant for a forum for politics they were meant to bring the communities together. If you feel so passionate please go to your state or governor as I have asked you in the past. Thank you and I know you will ALL respect that wish. health wealth and equality for all, even dogs! shannaxoxo

Current mood:  tired
well, I just got back from a interview at CBS, and I can say after not sleeping for about 2 days and trying to sum up emotions in a 30 second interview wasn't easy, I wanted to take to my blog so I can put into words my thoughts and feelings, I find writing is best for me anyway.

First, I want to be clear on the fact, that I have NOT and will not abandon our reigning Miss California, thou I have a STRONG difference of opinion, I do NOT hate her, nor do I have any issue with her stating her opinion, she is not the first conservative christian titleholder to be in pageants. I agree with the majority that this IS what makes our country great and that is of course freedom of speech. She was asked a questioned and she answered it.

But I want to explain to the masses, what the TITLE of Miss USA stands for to me, and being a former Miss USA, I feel I have a pretty good sense of it. Miss USA travels the world and she competes at the Miss UNIVERSE pageant as a representation of her country. She is a ambassador, a role model and needs to be able to show diplomacy on all issues. sadly for California THIS is where we lost the crown. Not for her answer or even her beliefs, because again, sadly IN California her beliefs at this point in time are the majority. But she lost the crown because she wasn't able to convey compassion for ALL the people that as MISS USA she would be representing. and if YOU like it or not, gays and lesbians make up this country as well. THIS is why we have judges so they can find the RIGHT woman who obtains these qualities. they are crucial in my eyes when holding a honor and title as big as being Miss USA. The panel of judges was qualified and did their job, they represented all of us, men, woman, black, white, gay and straight.

I think Miss California's willingness to stand by her convictions and ( in my eyes, simply made the question more personal then it needed to be,) has in essence made a great positive impact cause it has brought a issue important to me to the for front of the media and that is civil rights. I have blogged and petitioned for gay rights in the past and if anything positive can come out of this, It's that it has people talking and we need to have people talking and we need MANY conversations on this topic to take place, especially in the state of California and with Prop 8.

I do however want to apologize to the men and woman who have continually supported the Miss California USA pageant. I know some were hurt and felt a sense of betrayal, but I thank you for your understanding, communication, love and continued support.

Current mood:  bullied
I really thought the days of my personal relationship being played in the public eye were over. just so there is no confusion or "source" to attack my character, I am saying my side.

Travis and I were very much together in September when the horrific crashed happened, not only did I fly to Georgia I stayed by his side the entire stay and also for the bus ride home to LA, I think any human being with a heart and for the love of any good friend , never mind father of their children and lover would do the same, After arriving in LA and getting settled in the new hospital, I came across numerous romantic emails with MANY other woman, some famous , some I personally knew, all heart breaking. and the woman involved you know who you are and should be ashamed of yourself. I also came across emails where employees of my ex were writing comments on gossip networks like TMZ and Perez Hilton, attacking me as a woman and a mother. I Think those were more painful then the infidelities. As anyone can imagine, I was devastated, this is when I stopped going to the LA hospital, I knew and made sure even after what I learned he had a strong support system in place with friends and family, and I made it clear to them why I would be dismissing myself, at that point with the new information revealed to me I considered myself SINGLE and thou In my heart hoped we would remain friends and good parents had no intentions of getting back together. It was a painful time that no one unless they had lived it has the right to judge. Any actions I may or may have not done after this time, mean nothing.

I have been attacked by my Ex and his friends in the press for years at this point, my ability as a mother ( which to me is the cruelest thing you can do to any mother) my character and my integrity. I have never verbally bashed him as a father. I didn't even bash him after the infamous blogs years ago, I have never went on different social networks and made campaigns of hate and slander, In fact MANY times I have had to bite my tongue and try to be the bigger person. I have tried to always put the lives and thoughts and feelings of my children first. I am by no means an angel, and I have made many mistakes, but a woman can only turn her cheek so many times.

"No Comment" just wasn't sufficent this time when people continue to lie and distort the truth. the sad part is, the truth really isn't that juicy or news worthy, it's sad and I wish it had been left behind closed doors. I am a human being and the bashing has taken it's toll.

hope your all happy.

Current mood:  adventurous
1) before you even think about going to the DMV, I highly suggest you call your DMV or look up your local DMV on the internet for times they are open...mine is closed every first and third friday of every month, also on weds and no longer provides service on saturdays...also times are different for each day!
you don't want to show up and it be closed like I did!

2) before attempting to go to the DMV call the impound/police station/DMV or any other city service you might be involved with to get ALL paperwork that is needed upon your visit! ( this involves hours of waiting time on the phone, talking to automated phone services etc,but will save you hours later) I can assure you even if you have what you "think" you need, YOU DON"T, they will want blood, semen, high school diploma, the last 5 years of your tax returns , butterscotch candies and in some cases your first born!

3) If you don't want to wait 30 days for an appt, or your not a super celeb like wonky McValtrex and get back door service, you will be greeted with a 50 person line just to get your number...this is where you need to call upon patience...breath deep, not to deep as the scent of the DMV could cause serious brain damage and the release of certain bodily fluids.

4) after getting your number, if they even give you a number, some may not have come with the proper paperwork, this is where you will get more paper work and you will be sent back to the end of the stink line to repeat step 3! again, after you get your number, which usually runs 75 to 90 people ahead of you, you get to pick your seat of sheer delight!

5) finding a seat at the DMV is exciting, frankly I would advise going to your car and smoking a blunt before this hour long wait so you don't miss out on to much entertainment...like seth and sarah the meth heads from fontana! seth likes to shoot invisiable basketballs into the walls, while sara makes sure she can;t sneak into the appt only line! those crazy kids! then there is the loving couple who somehow thinks the DMV is a "FUN" place to bring the kids! here's a tip 3 year olds don't like the DMV anymore then you do....and they are not any better at filling out the loads of useless paperwork to keep you occupied while they continue to insult your intelligence.

6) after about 2 hours go by and I hope you brought snacks! a water and fruit is good, cause the DMV only has 1 bathroom and 1 stall so you better not have to pee! you get your number called! this shit was better then a keno lounge in vegas and I just hit the fucking jack pot! I don't think I have ever been more excited about anything in my whole life...

7) when going up to your window, don't gloat about it, the city folk don't like it...and when approaching keep a calm demeanour and weather your city worker is a pissed off dyke of a female or a hefty "eating" his anger sort of man, simply say "HI" in your brightest cheeriest smile....then go right back to being serious cause this shit is all business! state your claim, start pulling our documents ( blood, passport, car insurance, your drivers ed test) DO NOT GIVE EYE CONTACT, repeat DO NOT GIVE EYE CONTACT...if you are lucky and only if you are lucky and your city worker is feeling charitable they will give you the green light..Don't ask questions just give them MONEY and get the fuck out! and a side note they do NOT take CREDIT CARDS!

8) as your leaving look over the sea of dead faces, pained citizens, screaming children, breastfeeding mothers and take pity, immediately boil your body in hand sanitizer and pray that you will never have to see the depths of hell again. if there was a DMV this is exactly what dantes inferno was based on! uh oh, you have to go to the impound to get that car out....well I guess thats a whole other lesson in register your fucking car and pay your tickets you dumb fuck life lesson 101!

( * for the record this was not for MY car as I handle my shit, shanna is the business, I don't just play the game I fucking invented it, hehehe )

and there you have it....you to can learn from others instead of the hard way!

Current mood:  focused
Ok hot mamas and papas, I have officially ate my last chocolate chip muffin, ok that's a lie I'm going to vegas tomorrow and I plan on eating all weekend, but come Monday I am starting a official summer beach body diet! I am inviting you all to come and join...I will be doing this on my facebook... http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=700059171&ref=name it will be for 8 to 12 weeks, it will be a official group, I will want check ins and updates! I will be posting the "rules" so to speak shortly! get ready cause I'm not playing around and I want pictures, befores and after in 8 weeks! see ya in sin city! s.xoxo health, wealth and happiness.

ok guys, here are the first rules for tomorrow! you can also go to the group link and see them in the discussion area! my goal is 15lbs! and yes ladies I need it to, I just hide it better..hehe

1) I want you to get a measuring tape! yes thats right! it's hard to do, but you can do it, calve, thigh, hip, tummy, bust ,arm! measure them!!! ( I suggest this cause when you hit that point and feel like your not losing "weight" you will be in inches! this will help motivate you!!

2) WATER! I take my body weight, cut it in half and thats how much water in ounces you need to drink! ( this can be hard, but you CAN do it!

3) MULTI-VITAMIN - take one, no excuses, even a flintstone one, I don't care, you need it!

4) EAT! to lose weight you must eat! NOT massive amounts but small meals EVERY 3 hours..breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack... ( snacks can be almonds, all the strawberries you want, protein shakes, protein or diet bars! )

5) EXERCISE- yes you must move your body! if you are a very NON active person, start off slow, do 15 min, then add 10 more everyday! I WANT YOU ALL TO TRY TO DO AT LEAST 30 MIN A DAY TO START! ( going to the bathroom, 10 squats over the potty, watching TV when a commercial comes on 10 wall push ups or crunches, at work, take the stairs! these small efforts will prove results!

6) FOOD JOURNAL - you eat it, you write it down, this will help you get a better idea of what crap you have been eating and not even realizing it, I find after awhile this can become a real chore, so I just want us to do it for the first couple weeks...

ok this is just to get us rolling, we will be adding more as we continue on this journey!
