Hi all, A lot has been going on for me lately. Here are some highlights: My partner Tim and I just launched a new dating blog. My second article was just posted for my museum writing gig. I just posted a new Tangria show (Sept. 12) at Tangria's site. I'm going to need to move my website (geocities is shutting down their free option), so I'll post another entry when that is done. I also have at least 1 new gig (Feb. 28, 2010) with Kim Baker to post, so I'll update you when that is done. :) Sheryl

Hi all, I've been songwriting a bunch lately. Yay! Does anyone have any great resources or books to encourage new songwriters to stretch and grow? I enjoyed reading a book by Sheila Davis on songwriting a few years ago. I also loved the approach of another author who taught her students something she calls Spirit Singing. Side notes: Here are some sites (and folks behind the sites) I've been visiting lately to boost my health, focus and spirits. Enjoy! nutritioushealing.com (I've recently tried a few of the recipes on Tim's site. Yum!) beliefnet.com (I'm not religious, but I like a lot of the reminders I get from the site's newsletter.) careerbuilder: Downtime (I especially loved the reminder to practice gratitude.) Take care, Sheryl PS: I've been making updates at www.tangria.net. Some new musical projects are on the way as 2008 wraps up.

Hi all, I just came up for air recently. I'm starting a new job next month, an environmental postdoc about which I'm very excited. Before that starts, I've got a few requested pieces of writing about science education and green chemistry education that I'm feeling very grateful to have the time to address. Finally, besides enjoying a new relationship, I've also been fortunate enough to have new things going on musically. Check out my recent blog at blogs.myspace.com/tangriajazzgroup for details. I hope everyone is hanging in there regarding the financial upheavals going on as this year wraps up. Take care and best wishes for healthy and joyful times ahead. Sheryl www.geocities.com/sherylmebanePS: For those who are curious, since my last posting, I've been busy musically and with writing, but also I taught chemistry and environmental chemistry this summer. That kept me quite busy, but I'll be teaching again in the summer of 2009 - this time, it will be a green chemistry course that I get to design!

Hi all,
I just made a new post at http://blog.myspace.com/tangriajazzgroup.
One of the benefits to being back home (I noted other benefits in Tangria’s blog) is being able to resume my writing practice. Hurray! There are several projects in a variety of genres that I want to put out into the world. Also, finding time to read, reflect and let my ideas flow is really helpful for maintaining a healthy outlook on life, learning, loving and honoring as much of the world around me as I can. Reflecting while sitting outside in a park in wonderful weather also boosts my mood. :)
Peace, Sheryl

Check out www.geocities.com/sherylmebane for the national tour dates for Tangria in Feb. and March. I also just added a Feb. 29 book signing and March 6 rock show to my calendar.
I hope to see you soon!

Hello,
I finally realized that another exciting way for me to view this blog is as a way to share whatever bubbles up with whoever wanders by (and hopefully says hello).
This is akin to how it feels when I stroll around my neighborhood :) Last night, this stroll happened around 10pm. I ran into a cute neighbor of mine in the third convenience store that I visited. I left the store with a smile while holding a bag of white cheddar cheese popcorn (so addictive!) and thinking of the hug my neighbor gave me. Yay!
As I'm typing this, the TV blasts a rocking tune enlisted for commercial purposes. Hmm. I'd like for my band to face that challenge: to sell out, or not to sell out, that is the question :).
(Now, South Park is back on. This is an episode set in shop class and home ec.)
I think about the sell out situation sometimes. Not with my jazz band, but with the use of my science degree. I feel fortunate to have been able to get to a point where various work opportunities are accessible to me. I also feel the pressure of my longing for the financial stability that some of those (industry or academic) positions could offer. Just tonight, I was talking with a friend who offered to look out for positions for me. I told her that I appreciated the offer, but that I wanted to make myself focus on finding grant support for the project I really love - the project that I combines my intellectual, creative and social sides with a heaping dose of environmental chemistry education, research and community action.
South Park is calling to me!
Also, I realized, while reading what I just wrote, that I'm excited about the chance I have to be able to go for my dreams. I'm a lucky, lucky girl.
Take care.
S
PS: I'm the lucky girl who also posted an entry on http://blog.myspace.com/tangriajazzgroup recently.

Hi all,
Here is a newsletter sent to my supporters a few years ago.
I hope you'll enjoy this glimpse into the past.
Sheryl
12/16/2006
Hello,
As 2006 comes to a close, I first wanted to thank you all for your interest in my past and future projects and to thank you for all of your support. I hope that your year is wrapping up well.
2006 was another exciting year for me musically. Tangria Jazz Group and I released our sophomore CD, Mebane's Eleven: Tunes for Two, which features my own compositions. We are very proud of this project and are thankful for the 100 radio stations that have shared it with their listeners. We hope to let more folks know about the CD through jazz and music publication reviews in 2007. You can also hear tunes from the CD and buy tunes online at www.tangria.net/cd.html
Tangria performed at Mebane's Eleven CD release parties in North Carolina and California and were featured performers at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in the spring. We played at summer and fall festivals in California and are still enjoying a weekly gig on weekends at Vignette in San Francisco. See www.tangria.net for booking and gig details. I also performed and was recorded with rock, blues and jazz groups in 2006. Check out my website for links to the CDs on which I'm a drummer.
Throughout 2006, I shared my debut jazz novel Lady Bird (www.pearlstreetpublishing.com/LadyBird.htm) and the entertaining debut jazz CD Songs from Lady Bird from Tangria Jazz Group while traveling for chemistry education research in Washington, DC and St. Paul, MN. This year, I've learned a lot while editing my second novel. This story follows the lives of a diverse group of women of color. I hope to share it with the world very soon.
During 2006, I conducted, discussed and wrote about the Chemistry Literacy Project (CLP), my research and action project fostering chemical literacy for underserved populations. I also introduced the project to audiences at conferences across the nation. The project unites the efforts of chemistry educators, environmental chemistry researchers and community members throughout the country. If you're interested in or curious about the project and the network of folks helping it grow, please contact me and see www.geocities.com/chemliteracy. I'm currently applying for jobs and funding, which will start after my fellowship ends in the fall of 2007, which I hope will allow me to continue to work on the CLP, perhaps as a professor.
Feel free to spread the word to anyone who you think may be interested in these projects or events and to consult my website (www.geocities.com/sherylmebane) for the latest information, media links and event flyers you can download. Thanks again for your support. I'll hope to hear from you in 2007.
Best wishes for a joyous 2007,
Sheryl Mebane
