Current mood: thoughtful
Took a chair yoga class from the actress today. You know the Lyrica (a drug) commercial with the strikingly young silver-haired woman? That's her. She walks her greyhound past our house several times a week, and I just found out is also a registered yoga therapist and has been giving classes uptown for about a month.
Mothership has actually been mobile without the face of pain for two days now (our cousin the chiropractor - or time - seem to have finally helped her round the corner with her sciatica)(which is good, because I was about ready to jump off a bridge...), so she came with me to chair yoga this morning.
Probably not a good sign that as she was telling us to "feel the breath on the tip of our noses" all I could think of was "How in the heck is Michael Jackson supposed to do this exercise? His nose is probably on a shelf at Wonderland Ranch somewhere." I think that's one of those thoughts you're supposed to call your mind back from...
It was a very relaxing class. I'm taking another one tomorrow with Hoozbeen.
She took us through a gratitude affirmation exercise at the end. I was surprised to find my face completely wet - with tears.
Lovely. Hormonal. ;-D

Current mood:smugly positive
1. Today, I heard from a Myspace friend that I've been worrying and wondering about for the past 3 years, as she hadn't updated her blog or even logged in in all that time.
Today, I got a message from her. She's fine. She's doing great. She just forgot her passwords and just found them in a notebook. She says she wants to hear from us all and catch up. I messaged her back at my relief and happiness that she's alright and back in communication, shared some of my news about what's happening in my world, and ended expressing gratitude that she's doing well. She responded with a scathing message about not needing my "smug negativity" and defriended me. WTF? Now I'm really wondering if she's okay. 2. Went to the doctor for quarterly blood work. Had to ask 'em to let me pee in a cup. Again. I had to explain to the lady that it wasn't for my own amusement. I don't just like to pee in cups (although if you practice enough, you can make a game of it). 3. My horoscope says I should try to "be creative" today. I had to look up the word. 4. I called the mothership from the coffee shop after blood work and caught her just as she was going to leave the fluffernutters at my house for later walking. Whew. That was a close call. Here's a comic I liked from today. Reminded me of other former friends - the real kind, the kind I went to school with, the kind I've actually, you know, met? And their smug negativity bugs me sometimes too. I guess karma happens. You know what? I'm NOT having a bad day. Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are. Someone I was worried about is okay. I did get to pee in a cup! Caught most of it too! There are no fluffernutters in my house. It's a good day.

Bike riding season! Yay! Fundraising for Brian's yearly ride for tour de Cure! Yay! Brian's going to ride 100 miles on June 14th in support of diabetes research. As a diabetic myself, I'm pretty darned proud of him for undertaking this every year. As the son, son-in-law, brother-in-law, brother and spouse of diabetics, Brian sees it as a no-brainer. Please give if you are so inclined. Thanks! Brian's tour de Cure fundraising link

Well, some of them are, anyway ;-D Grrrrrl is piping at the Alma Highland Festival this weekend with Flint Scottish Pipe Band. They won first in their division today. Grrrl got tired out. And we got to pet a cow. This one, in fact. I held onto its horn and you could feel the vibrations of it chewing...very cool. We're all a little sunburned, even though it was a fairly cloudy day. It couldn't seem to decide whether to be warm or cold, rainy or sunny. Every time I'd put on a sweater, the sun would come out. Supposed to be bonified summer-type weather tomorrow for day 2. Oh boy.

Took mothership up to scary Flint to see my cousin Timmy's show - he's an artist, you know, an artist artist? We apparently managed to get up to the murder - wait, "motor"? city on Art Walk night. This thing:
U of M-Flint Student Exhibition / ARTWALK
Greater Flint Arts Council
May 15-June 5, 2009. Original works of art by students of U of M - Flint.
At ARTWALK, we feature a different exhibition each month which takes place the
second Friday of every month, we offer live music, catered food and beverages.
ARTWALK and RECEPTION: Friday, May 9th, 6-9 pm. Exhibition times: M-F, 9am-5pm.
I couldn't believe how many people were all over the downtown city streets of Flint. Only time I've ever seen crowds like that is during the Crim. It was cool.
Cousin's show was on the second floor space in an art gallery on a side street. Lots of young folks milling about outside. Lots of trendy folks milling around inside. Looked like an excellent turnout - not just for my cousin, but for the entire city.
Then it came time to walk to our car. It was turning dusk. The crowds were still on the streets. We were parked less than 2 blocks away. We started up the sidewalk, and as I was walking, I thought mothership was right beside me. When I looked - it was not her. It was a stranger. So I stopped in my tracks and told him, "After you, sir." Looking frantically for my mom. She was also being flanked by another gentleman. A very tall gentleman. A very dark gentleman. The man who'd been walking VERY close to me then began cussing at me.
"Can't walk next to a black man, right? We're subhuman to you, aren't we. We're just animals!"
I just looked at him.
"We should all be killed shouldn't we? Animals that we are? No right to walk on the same sidewalk with whitefolks like you"
I just looked at him.
Then his friend said something like, "She didn't mean nothing by it, man, let's just keep going. See, we're all friends here. What's your name?" And he stuck out his hand, to shake...
Mom took his hand saying something like she'd lived and worked in Flint for years, yada, yada...
The big guy said "He ain't even from around here. He's from New York."
At which I said some sort of inanity like "Really? How cool is that?"
At which point he said, "What? You think I'm lying? Yeah, we all lie all the time, don't we. You wouldn't believe us no matter what we said..."
I was shaking his hand at this point, which he did not let go of - until my phone rang, and a police car pulled up beside us at the same time. I said, "Excuse me. I have a call," broke the contact, and he and his friend walked off slowly, him still murmuring...
If you knew how agoraphobic I am at baseline, you'd realize that this is gonna set me back for awhile.
Probably a long while.

Current mood: cheerful
Choir season is over. Both spring concerts went surprisingly well. Tallboy actually chose to attend (of his own free will!) which warmed the bloated cockles of my heart. Grandpa and Grandma D went out of their way to attend, a choral concert, 30 miles away from home, that their grandchildren and son were not at...don't know if I can express my wonder at that. Bestest friend and her bestest mom were there, as usual. Friend support. Just imagine. Does a body good ;-D
Now, it's on to grrrrl's playing in the pit band for "How To Succeed in Business" this weekend at Howell High School - if swine flu (or O1NK virus - as leetle seester likes to say) doesn't put the kaibosh on it. That would suck, 'cause they've been working pretty darned hard. Fowlerville just got a week-long vacation because of the flu though, and that's just one school over...
Supposed to get invited to lunch with a talented singer-songwriter/soloist from my choir. She's kind of a gourmand (and her son is brewmaster at a brewery in Grand Rapids). She teaches piano and plays harp. She says she'll let me pluck the strings when I come over ;-D.
I finally got over my own version of the 7 plagues of Egypt that were - um - plaguing me for the past month, just in time for my spring concert - when, of course, another plague hit me. Same plague that hits me for every important event in my life. Think Lady Macbeth...are you reading me? Anyway, can't wait for menopause to end it all. So far, it has not been the "pause that refreshes."
TMI? Sorry bout that. Go wash your hands. You'll feel better.
By the way, Bestest and I have determined that there will be a barbecue, it will occur this month, and we are inviting our old friend DL and his new ladyfriend (and whoever else he chooses to bring). Other than that, we can't nail anything down until man returns from his latest travel - to Virginia this time, I believe.
Sigh. Summer. We finally made it!

Current mood: sick
I love to swim. Built for flotation. Couldn't sink if I wanted to. This is a good thing because I will float no matter what. Just floating in the sun. I'm wondering how long this particular place to blog will be here. Another place I liked to spend a little time, Poetry.com, was apparently bought by Lulu.com when I wasn't looking, and they've completely redone the site, dumping the cool refrigerator magnets poetry feature and the very low-tech but still fun - and kind of soul feeding - haiku of the day. What will happen to my silly content here when that happens to MySpace? Float. Doesn't the sun feel nice? Isn't the water cool? There's this boy I know...he's coming home this week. Feel those rays. Come on vitamin D. Do your work! Took a tour through a German U-boat in Chicago on Sunday. Awful. Amazing. The claustrophobic anxiety I get from just thinking about it is amusing. You know, if you like that sort of thing Periscope down.

Except please be cognizant of the fact that someone died a long time ago, left only his outer shell, expressly to give bunnies the ability to lay chocolate eggs. Which they do, only at this time of year. So be grateful. Eat chocolate. Dye eggs. Plant bulbs. Enjoy spring.
