MONSTERS ARE AMONG US AT THE SAINT LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER THIS SUMMER STAR CLIPPER A PROMOTIONAL PARTNER Monsters! The Art & Technology of Animatronics Exhibition Makes Movie Moguls of Visitors Who Get a Rare Peek Behind the Scales of Feature Creatures MONSTERS! are invading the Saint Louis Science Center! They're appearing in the Exploradome, where MONSTERS! The Art & Technology of Animatronics is making its U.S. debut this summer, and popping up on the big screen in the OMNIMAX® Theater's presentation of the new film, Dinosaurs Alive! The U.S. debut of Monsters! The Art & Technology of Animatronics Exhibition opens May 3, at the Saint Louis Science Center. This intriguing exhibition allows visitors “behind the scales” to see how cinematic creatures are made, from the storyboard process to the convincing specimens that actually appear on the big screen.
The brainchild of Academy Award-winning animatronics expert John Cox and his Australian team of craftsmen, the exhibition showcases some of the stars of Cox's movie career and takes visitors on a journey of the creative techniques used in visual effects and movie animatronics.
“Visitors will see the entire process, from the drawing, modeling and engineering stages right through the final touches for the silver screen,” said Beth Bishop, public relations manager for Saint Louis Science Center. “The exhibition is interactive with sound and movement, and includes elements for all ages.”
Among the classic creatures visitors can expect to see are parts of the giant crocodile from Peter Pan, the gorillas from George of the Jungle 2, the legendary Abominable Snowman, and, for the first time, Selkie the sea lion, Fred the marine iguana, and Chica the sea turtle from the new Nim's Island, in theaters now. Visitors can play with Inspector Gadget's gadgets, touch alien guts, become an on-set animatronic puppeteer and look beneath the skin of many mechanical movie creatures.
MONSTERS! aren't just appearing in the EXPLORADOME at the Saint Louis Science Center, but also on the giant screen in the OMNIMAX® Theater. Real monsters of the past are the stars of the amazing new film Dinosaurs Alive! Scientifically-accurate computer generated animation and exquisitely preserved 1920s footage of fossil expeditions, led by scientist and adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews, believed to be the inspiration for Indiana Jones, bring familiar prehistoric monsters back to life.
Admission to MONSTERS! is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and children and free for Saint Louis Science Center members. Admission to Dinosaurs Alive! is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and children. Visitors can view both the exhibition and film for a special $10 combo price. Did you know that Star Clipper is 20 years old in 2008? Not bad for your neighborhood comic shop. The industry has seen a lot of change in these 20 years, and we're really proud to have been a part of it! Technically, the very first version of Star Clipper got its start even sooner, as a gaming and comic book shop called The Shire on Delmar Boulevard just a few doors east from where we are currently located. If any of you out there remember Sonny and Carol Denbow's Shire, holla at us! It opened up in 1980. Star Clipper (as many of you knew it) opened up at 612 North and South Drive on September 15, 1988. Sonny and Carol were the proprietors and left behind a legacy that is still felt today. Star Clipper moved around a bit, to 8134 Delmar and then 379 North Big Bend, and in 1997 that's where I came on the scene. By that time the Denbows had sold the shop to one Scott Thorne, owner of Castle Perilous in Carbondale, Illiinois. Hi Scott! Well, Star Clipper was my density and my husband and I decided to make Scott an offer he couldn't refuse. The rest is history. We're back in the Loop, and we hope you'll visit us there often. It's been a wild ride. With your support we hope to make it through another 20!

Hey everbody: Star Clipper just got named Best Comic Book Store in St. Louis for 2007 by The Riverfront Times! Here's the writeup below: BEST COMIC BOOK STORE 2007 STAR CLIPPER "Lately we've enjoyed a comic-book renaissance. Not only has Hollywood figured out that funnybooks are a part of our cultural lexicon, but so have the so-called legitimate publishers, one of which had comic artist Chris Ware draw the new cover for Voltaire's Candide. It's nothing to see a Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the history of the industry (Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) or an alternative newsweekly print a retelling of Stack Lee's murder of Billy Lyons in panels with word balloons. Star Clipper Comics is a glowing example of the rebirth of comics: Gone are the days of geeked-out, poorly lit, cramped retail spaces with the product stored in cardboard boxes. Star Clipper is big, bright and beautiful, and it offers a stupendous collection of ongoing titles you know (hey, did you know the Hulk was back? He's angry!), titles outside the Marvel/DC multiverse you didn't know were around (hey, did you know the Lone Ranger was back? Tonto too!), as well as books, T-shirts, toys, games and those manga books the kids seem to like. Star Clipper goes further, though, hosting hipster events like the St. Louis Munny show, where local artists decorated Munny robot dolls (they're big in Japan) and unveiled them at a party complete with drinks and DJ spin." Thanks Riverfront Times, and thank you St. Louis! We love ya!!
