I have been listening to music for most of my life. i have a huge collection of records, and have probably heard every song that was successful on the Australian and American charts since 1964 onwards... a few times each. so i have an excellent knowledge of the 'sounds' that were popular over the years.
I have been a radio announcer, producing my own programme, for 9 years now, and of course play mainly pop nostalgia from the 60's and 70's. But i do play other genres and eras. The name of my programme is Yesterday Today, and i am currently on live to air at voxfm here in Wollongong.
i enjoy listening to the music on myspace. As a personal listener the quality doesn't matter to me so much. i think there is always something that you can get from a song or tune if you take the time to listen to it, and the rough 'home' produced songs are just as interesting to me as the polished and sometimes overproduced studio songs. I am of course a bit more selective for music that goes to air.
The music industry is undergoing huge changes. There are many many people now who are capable of recording music in their own homes, or even able to set up music studios with a fraction of the cost it took in the past. So what we have is a plethora of artists, singers, songwriters, musicians etc who are displaying their music on the internet. Myspace is just one of these avenues. In the early sixties the 'single' was the main source of music but in 1967 the sale of 'albums' over took the 'single' and stayed that way until the digital age came upon us.
These days songs are downloaded from the internet, and i guess that the popularity of the CD will be taken over once again by single songs that people are seeking to put on their ipods etc.
I congratulate all those who are putting out music. As a hobby, it is an excellent way to satisfy the creative urge. as a job its getting harder and harder all the time as the huge number of hopeful people enter the arena.
As a final comment on the myspace music i hear: Lots of excellent singers, many very good instrumentalists, a few good songwriters and plenty of enthusiasm for music..all in all, for a person who likes listening to music (such as myself), a fantastic source..
All the best to all my friends,
Wayne.
