Hi Everyone, My new 3-part angel series is done! I created these specifically for a contest for OnAngels Magazine. The series is about character, and angels are great subjects to illustrate this, inasmuch as they are beings who are pure and without flaw. Anyway, here they are: 1. "Perseverance" The sky is a dark grey, but with an orange sun trying to peek from behind the clouds. Our angel is facing a headwind that is blowing her hair and her gown about, but she holds her head high and will hold her ground until the storm passes. I chose perseverance because you can tell a lot about a person by how he or she reacts to adversity or the stumbling blocks that always pop up on your way to achievement. Next: 2. "Optimism" The scene here shows a perfect blue sky with fluffy clouds, and our angel here is smiley and sunny. I don't know that I need to explain it much further, but again, a good result in any endeavor has to start with a good attitude. And: 3. "Integrity" As you can see, she doesn't have designer clothes or expensive jewelry; she has only herself. But she can look you in the eye and tell you the truth. You can see that she has a pendant around her neck. But only seeing the painting up close and in person can you see that her pendant is actually a tiny Eye of Providence. (If you're unfamiliar with that term, take a one-dollar bill out of your pocket and look at the back - in the seal on the left side you will see an eye inside a triangle. That is an Eye of Providence.) There's an old saying about integrity being what you do when you think no one is watching. The Eye of Providence is a reminder that perhaps someone is watching. So there they are. Feel free to comment. Steve And for more, please visit my official website: www.scbartworks.com

Hi Everyone,
I have decided to create some new art to enter into a contest for a magzine, with the deadline being at the end of May. The magazine is about angels, and so they're calling for angel-themed art. Since I can enter 3 paintings, I decided to create a 3-part series; the 3 are all related, though on does not need to see all 3 together.
I picked up an idea I had been jotting down notes for but never developed for a series of paintings about character. The 3 character traits I picked to illustrate here are: Optimism, Perseverance, and Integrity. What I'll be showing you today are design sketches and the theory behind each one; you'll see the paintings develop over the next few weeks. Assisting me with this project is Rachael, one of the local girls who does some modeling for me.
1. Optimism
This could be seen as just an emotional state, but I actually think of optimism as a chracter trait. Consider for a moment the opposite: pessimism. Pessimism is the easy choice, the path of least resistance. We all have our ups & downs; that's life. It takes no effort whatsoever to stay down and gloomy when something goes wrong, and to expect the worst. Pessimism leads to giving up. But to continue to have a positive outlook and look for the bright side when things go wrong, that takes effort.

I wanted the angel of optimism to be sunny, relaxed, and happy. Hence the daisy in her hair. The painting will have light, fluffy clouds and blue skies.
2. Perseverance
Perseverance can actually be the result of optimism. Again, this is the more difficult choice; giving up is easy, carrying on usually is not.

As you can see from her hair, wings, and gown, she's facing a headwind. It's hard to see in the sketch, but she has a very confident expression. She's not about to give up. The painting here will feature deeper, darker colors than will Optimism.
3. Integrity
This is the really important one. Every day, we're treated to celebrities saying assinine things, politicians going back on promises, journalists fabricating stories....the list goes on. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you're gonna tell it, you gotta tell it all. And so on.

I'm using photocopies of the original sketch to work out the wing design for this one right now. But her figure says it all. She can look you in the eye and tell you the truth....even if you're not so thrilled to hear it. This one will combing dark, bold colors with a sunrise effect.
That's all for today. Stay tuned for progress on the paintings!
Steve

OK back to work on the chess painting! When I left off, I had dome most of the work on the model. Now, I'm going to get the chess pieces painted and start in on the board. First up is a giant white King. I'm going to use an Iwata HP-SBS airbrush and Golden titanium white as a base coat, then use a mix of Com-Art transparent black with a few drops of white to add in the depth and shadows: There will be more touch-ups on the King later, but right now I'm going to move on to a red Knight on the other side. The basecoat color I'm using here is Golden napthol red, mixed with some blue to make it more of a crimson red, with less of an orange tone. Then I'll use the transparent black mixture for shadowing: You can see the lines of the pattern of the board. When it comes to painting, I'm just going to use flat brushes and black acrylic to lay out the black squares, then repeat the process for the white squares. There's no need to use any masking; just have to be careful and steady-handed with the brushes! Keep in mind this is a 48x48 canvas; this process of painting squares will take several hours: Now you can get a feel for the depth of the painting, but with no shadows yet, you can't appreciate the 3-dimensionality at this point. That will come soon enough though! Stay tuned, it's getting closer to being done!!SteveAnd for more about me, please visit my myspace page or my website: www.scbartworks.com

Hi everyone,I'm working on a big commission right now so I thought I'd show & tell. This one is 48" x 48" on gallery-wrap canvas and features a dark-haired girl on a giant chess board. Here is the sketch: The painting will actually have a few changes; there will be no Bishop, and the board pattern will be reversed. But you get the point. After completing the layout (which took several tweaks, trial-and-error, thinking, etc.) I borrowed my dad's truck (which hadn't even been started or out of his garage since October!) and went to the art store to get a Fredrix 48x48 gallery-wrap canvas and got the image transferred onto it. Now to the painting! Please excuse the blurry pic - it was early in the morning and my camera apparently didn't know what to focus on. Anyway, the first step is to get some color in her eyeballs, which are a medium brown, and her brows: After next applying color to her lips with an airbrush, I use a regular paintbrush and some Windsor & Newton titanium white acrylic to really brighted her eyes and teeth - but I'm not adding in the shadows or definition in her teeth just yet: And now I can start working some color into her face with the airbrush. At this point, I'm just laying down basic color; I'll work on shadows and depth later: Now it's on to her hair. She has very dark hair, so I'm going to use black to create all the flow and depth. This will change the appearance of her face as well: On a painting of this size, that was a time-consuming step! I'm also going to work some browns and blues into her hair to make the overall color much deeper and richer. Once her hair is done, I can then move on to the rest of her skin: Now you get the idea of how large this painting really is! Her skin and hair are basically finished, but I will be adjusting the tone and shadows later, after the chess board is painted in. For now though, the next step is to paint the Knight and the King. Stay tuned!SteveAnd for more about me and my art, please visit me on here or my website, www.scbartworks.com
