I've been meaning to mention this for awhile: who knew that NPR reporter Ari Shapiro was so dang cute?! He's been appearing on the News Hour with Jim Lerher recently and I just had no idea!!!
I'm smitten.

Last night I got home from imbibing too many glasses of wine and having not eaten much. You know that starving feeling intensified by alcohol? Yes, I'm sure you do. And the food choices made under these circumstances are almost always poor, but luckily I'm too lazy to head out of my house and I only stock relatively healthy food. I had a fabulous salad:
Baby arugala
Fresh Black Mission figs
Fresh red bell pepper
Marinated feta cheese
Dressed with some of the spiced oil marinade from the cheese, coarse sea salt, and fresh ground black pepper
Wholly satisfying, utterly delicious, and pretty guilt-free!

Though I have been obsessed with pineapple in recent weeks (sometimes consuming an entire one in a day) I must implore all of you in the NY/NJ area to go out and buy some local peaches. New Jersey is the third largest U.S. grower of peaches, behind Georgia and California, and right now they are ripe and ready. I prefer a yellow peach to a white peach, but no matter, both are grown around here. Find your local Green Market or farm stand and savor the juicy sweetness.

Today as I was leisurely walking (and yet still profusely sweating) to the laundromat I had a craving for horchata. (horchata [hor-CHAH-tah] - Extremely popular in Spain and Mexico, horchatas are drinks made by steeping nuts, grains or chufa in water. They're usually lightly sweetened with sugar and sometimes spiced with cinnamon. Horchatas are generally served cold or at room temperature. They come in a wide variety of flavors. Horchata de arroz is made with rice, horchata de almendras with almonds, and the famous horchata de chufa is, of course, made with chufa. Horchatas may be purchased in Latin markets.) There is a 24-hour Mexican diner in my neighborhood that makes this delight on weekends so I bopped on down there during the Wash cycle. Then it struck me that this would make an absolutely fabulous addition to iced coffee, which I just happened to have in my fridge at home. My new summer drink has arrived!
