I wanted to send you a message to let you know that our CANVAS team is gearing up for our 5th installment of what has been one of Tampa premier art events.
Our jury is currently accepting application to show in our October 09 premiere. As always, there is no cost to the artist, no gallery fee, and CANVAS does not take a percentage of your sales. CANVAS is free to both attend and to show in.
Over the past four installments we have see HUGE success both in creating a buzz for new up-and-coming artists, and for the art community as a whole, as thousands flock to hear incredible music, drink killer coffee, and view some amazing inspirations.
If you know any artists who need to be noticed, please have them send a short bio, 2-3 jpg of work and their contact info to info[at]canvas813.com before September 1. Please check out www.canvas813.com to see pictures and to meet the artist who have shown in years past. We thank you for your continued support of the greater art community of Tampa Bay, and we look forward to seeing you at CANVAS 5.
Bobby Triplett Director, CANVAS

Received via email: Open Casting Call to Find the Face of the U22 Campaign GTE Federal Credit Union is conducting an open casting call and looking for an enthusiastic young person to be the icon for a new initiative encouraging the younger generation to become a member, save their allowance and pay checks and in turn gain financial independence. All interested, talented applicants must pre-register at www.U22Register.com by June 17, 2009. The live casting call event is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday June 20, at a branch location. Not all applicants will have the opportunity to audition at the casting call; however, we are accepting YouTube online submissions; all entrants will be considered for the role. The judges will rate the videos on a 1-10 point scale rating with 1 point being the lowest score and 10 points being the highest score, based on the following equally weighted criteria: (1) expertise in the U22 account, (2) ability to articulate thoughts and deliver commentary clearly, (3) capability to express oneself with brevity, and (4) good camera presence with audience appeal. The winner and new face of the U22 Campaign will debut with the launch of a cutting-edge social media campaign and offline advertising campaign in the Tampa Bay market July 2009. GTE Federal Credit Union is one of the largest locally owned and operated financial institutions in Tampa Bay, a non-for-profit financial cooperative with 1.8 billion in assets. For more info, contact Terri Durdaller, Director of Public Relations, at 727-523-8044 or via email at terri[at]ceamarketing.com.

Here's an email for anyone in or around NYC:
Rooftop Films is back and we’re starting the summer early. The Rooftop Films 2009 Summer Series kicks off on Friday, May 15th. Head to the Lower East Side and follow the crowds up to the Open Road Rooftop Project to see extraordinary live music performances and amazing films under the warming sky, framed on all sides by the greatest cityscape in the world. The Rooftop Films 2009 Summer Series returns for our 13th season, screening every weekend from May 15 -September 20. This summer, Rooftop will host more than 40 unique outdoor events, featuring programs of new, independently produced films from around the world paired with New York’s best and brightest musical acts. We’ll be in more than a dozen spectacular outdoor locations around New York City and anticipate over 25,000 attendees throughout the summer. On Friday, May 15 the Rooftop Films Summer Series opens with the shorts program, “This is What We Mean by Short Films” at the Open Road Rooftop above New Design High School(Lower East Side). These are the movies that define the short film as a genre—quickly clever but profoundly rich, packed with hard-hitting humor and long-lasting poignancy. Before the films, Sound Fix presents Cymbals Eat Guitars. The Staten Island rockers have been getting a lot of attention for their first self-released album Why There Are Mountains and were just named "Best New Music" by Pitchfork. And after the films, everyone in attendance is invited to the Rooftop Films after party at Fontana's where we will be serving complimentary Radeberger Pilsner until 1 AM and hanging out with the filmmakers and the band. FRIDAY, MAY 15, 8pm This is What We Mean by Short Films

I have one month to use the Southwest voucher that I won last year (and then promptly forgot about). I'm gonna get on a plane, fly off into the wild blue yonder and have all sorts of adventures. (And then return home, of course, so don't worry that I'm leaving you.)
But where to go? What to do? I've narrowed the list of cities down by excluding places I've been before and places too cold/boring/expensive to visit right now. Here's what's left:
Albuquerque, New Mexico Boise, Idaho Cleveland, Ohio Columbus, Ohio Denver, Colorado Hartford, Connecticut Jackson, Mississippi Kansas City, Kansas Little Rock, Arkansas Manchester, New Hampshire Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Omaha, Nebraska Phoenix, Arizona Portland, Oregon Providence, Rhode Island Reno, Nevada Salt Lake City, Utah Seattle, Washington Spokane, Washington St. Louis, Missouri Tulsa, Oklahoma Tucson, Arizona
Whaddya think? Pretend that Richard Dawson just yelled out "Survey says!" and post your answers in the comments section.
Pretty please??

Received via email:
The Education Channel's 16th annual Independents' Film Festival (IFF) is now open for submissions. It's a little later than usual this year (I'm blaming that and everything else on the economy), so thank you for your patience while we retooled. You may enter either through Withoutabox.com or by downloading an entry form from our website, http://www.independentsfilmfest.com. The IFF website also has lots of information about the festival, competitive categories, deadlines, and, of course, a place to purchase an awesome IFF Trucker's Cap! So, log on, submit, forward this to your filmmaking friends and family, post it on your myfacespacebookpage, scrawl it on a wall. Let the films roll in!
If you want to help make the 2009 IFF the best darn film festival ever, email me at info@ifftampa.com and just say you want to help. Don't worry; I'll find a job for you!
"Post it on your myfacespacebookpage" ... Done! :)

I got an early Christmas present...a DVD of the comedy short Snow Day, Bloody Snow Day. I first saw this movie in 2005, but it's popped up in my mind from time to time over the years. SDBSD is about a town where the unthinkable happens -- it starts snowing!! Sensing the townspeople's confusion and helplessness, zombies decide to seize the advantage and attack. (Damn zombies.) So now the good citizens have to deal with falling snow AND hungry zombies -- what a day, what a day. Luckily there's a small group of nerdy fanboys who take a break from watching classic horror flicks to save the day. Or try to, anyway. (You'll get no spoilers from me.)
I enjoyed this movie the second time around just as much as I did originally three years ago. It held up for me upon the third viewing, when I made The Husband watch it and of course had to watch it with him. (He liked it too, which is actually higher praise than my liking it because he doesn't care much for comedies.)
I'll always be a Tampa film fan, of course, but today I'm a Seattle film fan as well. Check out www.gadzookfilms.com and you will be too.

I won't be on the computer much for the rest of the month. I wish I could say that I've won the lottery and will be too busy sailing around the world on my yacht to go online, but alas, I've yet to win the lottery. (I've yet to play the lottery, actually, which severely limits my chances of winning the darn thing.) As it turns out, my body thought it was so much fun having surgery last summer that it's decided to go for Round 2. Completely different ailment than last time, though. I have Stage 1 thyroid cancer and am having surgery on July 21. It's the "good kind" of thyroid cancer, they caught it early, and the prognosis is very, very good.
It still sucks, but there are soooo many ways that this could be sooooooo much worse.
See you all in August!
