Libra New Moon, October 17-18, 2009
For OpEdNews: Cathy Lynn Pagano - Writer
http://www.opednews.com/articles/1/Libra-New-Moon-October-17-by-Cathy-Lynn-Pagan..
o-091014-460.html

Spending a few weeks enjoying the glorious colors of a New England Fall reminded
me that Libra's concern with beauty is based just as much on the natural cycle
of the seasons as it is on our cultural ideas of beauty. While fashion is ruled
by Libra, the transformative beauty of birch, oak and maple leaves turning
golden, orange and red amidst the deep pine greens touches on the deeper beauty
of the soul. We see that beauty is fragile and precious, and comes in different
forms in different seasons of our lives. Venus, Libra's ruler, calls us to
connect to our unique beauty so that we can mingle with other souls and
recognize their beauty.

As I mentioned in my Aries Full Moon 2009 newsletter, Libra's Scales symbolize
our self-worth and what we bring to the collective table. Scales measure how one
side comes into balance with the other side, and Libra calls us to step forward
and engage with others on a level playing field. We might think we're not as
smart, rich or beautiful as the person we're dealing with or the situation we
find ourselves in, but Libra says, “Go on, try to balance the scales.” At
the end of our lives, when our hearts are weighed on Maat's scales of truth, we
are all equal. If we can learn that lesson while we live, we truly are the equal
of anyone we meet. If we respect ourselves and our experience of life, we can
respect anyone. Out of that respect, we learn to come to agreements about what
is fair, just, necessary and true.

Peace. Justice. Balance. Harmony. Partnership. These are words that we use to
describe the sign of Libra. But what do these words mean? Peace is not only the
absence of war; it also means ‘to agree' or ‘to receive with favor' or to be
‘capable of pleasing'. Harmony means ‘an agreement of feeling', as in music.
Balance means ‘a general harmony between parts'. Partner comes from a word
meaning ‘portion' or ‘part holder', as in someone we share something with.
Justice comes from a word that means ‘righteousness or equity' as in being
equal. All these words that we use to describe the meaning of Libra tell us that
we have to learn to share with others, to connect with others. And so Libra also
rules the social norms we all live by.

Each sign of the zodiac offers us a different means of expressing who we are.
Libra says, “Express your ability to agree and be pleasing with someone
else.” For some of us, Libra is an easy task. For others, not as much! But
each year, we all get a chance to practice the Libra tasks of life while the Sun
is in Libra.

To practice peace, balance, and harmony, we have to find it within ourselves
before we can find it with another person. We can't ignore the Aries lesson of
self-discovery and self-interest. And the Virgo lesson to ‘know thyself'. It's
best if we learn to understand how we use our masculine and feminine energies.
Without self-knowledge, we throw the balance of Libra off. When we forget to put
ourselves into the equation, we create imbalance. It does take two to tango! Or
to balance each other.

Too many Libra Suns think that they have to give over their own sense of self to
achieve peace and harmony. But it doesn't work like that. Hopefully, this
month's full Moon in Aries made you stand up for yourself. Now you understand
that taking a stand is just as important for peace as it is for war. If you
don't know what you stand for, how can you negotiate with another person? If you
give ‘in' to another person's needs, you are not creating balance. You are
just creating a situation where your needs are not met.

Libra asks, “How can we both get our needs met?” To do this, you have to
learn the fine art of diplomacy, which is another Libra trait. When a Libra
answers a question about what they want with “whatever” you know there will
be repercussions down the road. So do your homework: understand who you are and
what you believe; know your values and your desires; love yourself and others
enough to be truthful; open yourself to Spirit and to Nature â€" our archetypal
parents, the Sky Father and Earth Mother.

We'll have a chance to really dig into Libra's lessons in the next few years.
Saturn, the planet that symbolizes our collective ‘reality', is leaving Virgo
at the end of October and will occupy the sign of Libra for the next 2 years.
Saturn enters Libra on October 29, 2009 at 10:09am Pacific time (17:08:43 GMT)
and will remain in that sign (except when it retrogrades back into Virgo from
April 7 to July 21, 2009) until October 5, 2012. Which puts Saturn in Scorpio on
December 21, 2012, but that's another story!

Saturn in Virgo energized many of us with the discipline to get in shape and get
healthy; it has made us more aware of the environmental health of the planet and
how it affects us, especially our food; it has forced America to face its health
care crisis; it has brought many of us into service to others and our world.
While Saturn has opposed Uranus in Pisces three times while in Virgo (there will
be a 4th one in Virgo and a 5th one in Libra-Aries), very close to the degrees
of the Uranus-Pluto conjunction of the mid 60s, we have been going through a
collective awakening that is forcing us to face our personal and collective
future. Don't be surprised that the ideas and beliefs we discovered in the 60s
contain the answers to many of our collective problems.

Saturn in Libra will concentrate (a Saturn trait) our attention on our
relationship to others and the world. Saturn works well in Libra, creating a
maturity and responsibility within each of us that will eventually bring justice
and peace to our world. We can do it peacefully, or we can succumb to more war
and destruction. While Saturn is in Libra, we have a chance to practice the art
of truthful engagement, peace and cooperation. This morning I heard a newsperson
announce that “the battle of the sexes is over and we are entering a new era
of cooperation between the sexes.” Sounds like someone knows that Saturn is
going into Libra!!!

Women and men do need to start appreciating and understanding each other again,
this time on a higher level of consciousness. We need to cooperate if we are
going to change our world. Women and men are different, and yet, when we equally
respect each other, our energies complement each other, like Yin and Yang, and
create a new third energy. Carl Jung said that when we can bare the tension of
opposites, a whole new dimension opens up. He called this third thing the
Transcendent Function, which unites the opposites. This is the lesson of Saturn
in Libra, and with the publication of Jung's Red Book, perhaps his theories will
inspire more people to understand themselves and to consciously see and desire
the possibility of humanity moving beyond war and power and greed. The New World
Order cannot be dictated by the corporate imagination. The new world order must
be the child of the World Soul's wisdom. Our whole human journey calls us to
this encounter.
Humanity must grow up.

With Pluto in Capricorn beginning its de-construction of our financial,
governmental and societal structures (I like to think that it is the entire
patriarchy that is being laid to rest), we have a chance to bring the spiritual
and personal ideals born in the 60s into the public arena. They will be the
ideals the future is built on. Neptune, Jupiter and Chiron in Aquarius are
enlightening our collective mind, opening us to a new vision of our human
potential. Science and technology are showing us who we might become. Personal
spirituality is opening us to our divine nature. We will need to establish a new
vision in our cultural structures, for the old structures, which existed to
manipulate and control ‘the masses' are no longer viable.

This new Moon in Libra is being squared or challenged by the moon's nodes, which
show us our collective destiny for the year and a half it occupies a sign. The
North Node of the Moon is now in Capricorn and the South Node is in Cancer. Our
old collective karma (South Node in Cancer) must be released. We need to leave
behind our unthinking patriotism, our collective negative mother complex, our
fear and insecurity, our unconscious emotional motivation and neediness. We need
to embrace our new (Capricorn North Node) destiny and develop self-control and
discipline, self-reliance and personal power, maturity and responsibility.

This Libra new Moon is under pressure from the Moon's nodes to plant the seeds
of maturity and responsibility in our relationships and our sense of fairness,
as well as in our sense of self-worth. If we take responsibility for how we
relate to others, if we speak our truth, show our beauty, and stand up for
justice, we will enhance our collective destiny. We are the ones who will turn
the tide of destruction back upon itself. We have the choice to create a new
world or to let our old world stagnate until it collapses around us.

The Sabian Symbol for 25* Libra is: The sight of an autumn leaf brings to a
pilgrim the sudden revelation of the mystery of life and death.

All things eventually pass away. They can pass away through violence and
annihilation. Or they can pass away in beauty, reminding us of their truth and
purpose. And give us hope that in the future we will encounter such beauty
again.

Blessed Be.

Aries Full Moon 2009: The Harvest Moon
By Cathy Lynn Pagano

“Ikani, the Lord of Time and Mara, the Mother of Life, looked out over the harvest and saw that it was bountiful. Their hearts rejoiced, for in the silence of the Balance of the Light and the Dark, the seeds of the future were singing their names.”

Fall Equinox: The Balance of Light and Dark

With the Fall Equinox, we move from the energy of self to the energy of community, the time for bringing in the harvest to make sure life survives the winter. It is the time of the seed, the potential we have to save for the new life to come in the spring, when that seed germinates. What have you harvested this year? What new seeds have been born in you that will take time to nurture and develop?

We move from the harvest season of Virgo to the Libra energy of weighing something's worth. We associate Libra with balance (the Fall Equinox is when light and dark are balanced), and fairness (since we also associate the scales with Law, Order and Justice) and partnership (symbolizing the sign of marriage and partnership). But there is more.

The scales were originally used to weigh something's worth: in the Egyptian underworld, the scales of Maat were used to weigh the soul's worth, while on a more mundane level, scales were used to set up a standard measurement so that all people and countries could have a standard measure of exchange, whether it was to measure the weight of grain, gold or silver.

The archetype of the Scales is ancient. Believed to originate in Egypt, it represented the balance of the sun at the horizon between the upper and under world (at the Fall Equinox, the Sun rests on the equator and then begins its journey South). The ancient Babylonians thought the constellation represented an altar towering in the sky. The name Libra comes from the Roman word meaning ‘the balance'. Leave it to the Romans to standardize our mediums of exchange.

Libra is considered a masculine, outgoing energy; it is a cardinal air sign, meaning Libra wants to see its ideas take form and make a difference. Venus is Libra's ruler, and as the Greek Aphrodite, this seemingly feminine energy combines feminine and masculine in a wholeness that is greater than the sum of her parts. Aphrodite, goddess of Love and Sexuality and Beauty, is intrinsically Whole, for she is born from her father Uranus' phallus and her mother, the Ocean. It is the intrinsically feminine belief that we are all one, that we need to care for our communities, which activates Libra's insistence on fairness and justice. It is the wisdom of Love which lets us see the Truth. Love belongs to all of us, and is the one Truth that makes us whole.

So the archetypal energy of Libra is balanced, and we are called upon to balance the masculine and feminine energies within ourselves when we offer our intrinsic worth to the world. In partnerships, if we are not whole in ourselves, we tend to look to the Other for completion. And that's where things begin to go wrong. A partnership of equals means that each person is whole. When we haven't completed the Virgo mission of knowing ourselves, we project our missing parts and needs onto our partners. And as we all know, no one can save us except ourselves. Those of you born during the years Pluto was in Libra (1971 to 1984) are here to learn this lesson about relationships. And with Saturn going through Libra in the next few years, you'll get to see how well you've learned it.

That's where this full Moon can help us. The Moon in Aries encourages us to have the courage to be ourselves, to trust our own intuitions and be bold enough to try something new, to figure out what we need in a situation. Aries' inherent self-interest or selfishness is offset by the Sun in Libra, which teaches us how to balance Self and Other. The peace and harmony that Libra loves isn't achieved by denying your real needs, but by negotiating a real balance of needs between partners. Aries can show us new ways of getting what we want, while Libra keeps us on track with diplomacy and fairness.

For this Full Moon, Saturn, Mercury and Venus (Libra's ruler) are all in Virgo. We are still trying to figure out who we really are and how we can be of service to the world. Mercury turns to direct motion on September 29, a few days before the full Moon. The messenger god now has to integrate what he's learned during the past three weeks, and we won't have the message clear until Mercury returns to where it began its journey on October 14.

But just after the Full Moon on October 4, Mercury sextiles Mars in Cancer, Mars trines Uranus in Pisces, and Mercury opposes Uranus. Mercury, the mind, needs to listen to what Uranus, inspiration, tells him about new options that will help us get our needs met (Mars). So ask for a dream, vision or insight on the Full Moon that will quicken that integration. If you felt the new birth at the Cancer solar eclipse on July 21, then this weekend could bring you the information you need to nurture that new life.

Venus in Virgo urges us to stay virginal, the state of belonging to oneself, the state of wholeness. In Virgo, Venus represents Isis, the great goddess of magic, healing, fertility and integration. She separates the wheat from the chaff. She knows what is needed to sustain life. Venus aspects all the outer planets soon after this full Moon, using her ability to connect to open us to the big energies that signal the changes taking place in our civilization.

On October 4, Venus and Jupiter meet up in a quirky quincunx, offering us the opportunity to gain perspective on society, self-worth and our ability to give and receive love. On October 9, Venus opposes Uranus and makes a quirky quincunx to Neptune. The opposition can bring relationship surprises as well as helping us integrate the new Uranian vision that's breaking through our old limited perspective. The Venus-Neptune quincunx urges us to bring our ideals into reality instead of deluding ourselves with our old fantasies. As Baba Ram Dass said, Be Here Now. Venus joins Saturn on October 13, forcing us to see the reality of our situation, and she squares Pluto again on October 15 for the 4th time this year once she's back in Libra, shedding old relationship neediness.

As you can see, Venus is quite a busy Lady this month, but since she belongs to herself, her lovers end up giving her what she needs. And what she gives to us is a sure sense of self-worth, a clear picture of what our society needs to transform itself, and the power to do it, especially through the arts and through personal relationships.

Ladies, this is your chance to show your wisdom to the world. Men, this is your chance to stop being afraid of your feelings and intuitions – and women's power – and trust the wisdom of Love and transformation.

Jupiter turns direct on October 12-13, opening the way for any personal and community projects and visions to take their next step. The Jupiter, Neptune, Chiron conjunction in Aquarius is still offering us inspiration and a new vision for the world. The U.N. finally agreed that it's time to get rid of nuclear weapons, which is a good start.

One outcome of this major Aquarian conjunction is the publication of C.G. Jung's famous (at least to Jungians!) Red Book. (Read the New York Times article on Jung's Red Book). When Jung was about 38 – the time of the midlife crisis – he began a journey into the unconscious which later gave rise to all his major theories about the human psyche. He recorded this inner journey in a red notebook, which his heirs have kept secret until now. The visions and voices he experienced and wrote about are very much like a shamanic initiation into the workings of the human soul and the beautiful pictures he painted are brilliantly colored and detailed illustrations of those visions.

Jung was born during a Saturn-Uranus opposition (his in Aquarius-Leo), so he embodies the energies we are working with now – the opposition between the Old vs the New. This Red Book came out of a time when that opposition was being resonated in his chart. Jung chose to open himself to the New. Also, his Saturn is at 25* Aquarius, which is very close to the conjunction degrees of Neptune, Jupiter and Chiron. His theories and ideas can definitely form a basis for this new vision we are all seeking. The other interesting aspect of his chart and the release of his journal now is that his Neptune (the imagination and mystical experiences) at 3*03' Taurus is being trined this year and next by Pluto in Capricorn, a wonderful symbol of the release of hidden treasures. Jung's Red Book will be on display at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York from October 7, 2009 to January 25, 2010.

Of course I'm biased, but I really believe that Jung's work is important to our collective journey. I know from experience that working with my dreams has given me back my true Self. They have connected me to the depths of Wisdom that lay within each of us. We so often look outside ourselves for the answers that are waiting to reveal themselves within us. We just have to find out how to access it. And dream work is the best way I know to find our Self and our purpose.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun at 12* Libra is: Miners are emerging from a deep well into the sunlight. Within the womb of the Earth lie hidden treasures, both the jewels we adorn ourselves with and the elements that create and sustain much of our civilization. Symbolically, these treasures also represent the knowledge and wisdom that can create a civilization. They can be our dreams and visions, as well as our inventions. Those who have gone into the depths in search of wisdom must now learn to participate in the world's work. We must be of service now to those who are still suffering or in darkness.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 12* Aries is: A flock of white geese flies overhead across clear skies. Geese have a rich mythological background, symbolizing the transcendent soul, while snow (white) geese are the totem for the Winter Solstice, the time of the re-birth of the Light. Like Mother Goose, geese fill us with stories. When we see the geese heading off on their autumn migrations, we imagine the far-off places they travel to. It stirs our own imagination to search out new worlds for ourselves. This flock flying through clear skies urges us to lift our eyes to the heavens and read the signs in nature that indicate change is coming. We need to understand the cosmic order of life.

So never doubt that change is coming. The question is: How will we meet it? With blind ignorance and fear, or with the treasures of our life's experience and wisdom? The choice is really up to us.

Blessed Be.

Focus. Simplify. Consolidate. If you have ever stuffed a backpack or a suitcase, you know the Virgo process of discerning what is most useful and necessary. If you have ever spent time in the desert, you learned about Saturn and how to thrive in challenging circumstances. This New Moon reminds us that we are in a desert time, when we must fully utilize what we have and eliminate what is not essential.

Stephanie Austin, Mountain Astrologer, Aug/Sept 2009

When I read Stephanie's new Moon forecast, I was immediately caught by her reference to ‘living in the desert'. I have been living in the desert for about 3 years now and I feel the truth of her statement in my own life. So, I love the metaphor that we are all going through our desert time. As a 12th house Taurus – building psychic structures for the collective unconscious to work through - perhaps I've been preparing the way for the rest of you to accommodate yourselves to the desert climate! J

This Virgo New Moon will manifest the energies of the 3rd Uranus/Saturn opposition that occurs on Tuesday, September 15th. A new Moon is a seed time, and this third opposition is the balance point of the five oppositions occurring between November 4, 2008 (US Election Day) and July 26, 2010.

Full Moon in Pisces 9/4/09

Out of control forest fires. Out of control weather. Out of control debt. Out of control job losses. Out of control fiscal irresponsibility. Out of control lies and hypocrisy. Out of control delusions about national health care options. And the rumor is that the ever-smirky Cheney is going to run for president in 2012.

The June and July series of three eclipses in Cancer/Capricorn and Leo/ Aquarius has certainly stirred up a mess. But let's be truthful, we're just reaping what we've sown for at least the past 60 years. Ike warned us to watch out for the military-industrial complex and we citizens stayed asleep and let them take over. But it isn't too late to change things.

This will be the last Moon Message. Astrowisdom.com will discontinue posting on August 21, 2009. This web site has been providing intelligent commentary about the New and Full Moons for the last 10 years. Over these last few years, the form in which I am offering my talent to the world has shifted to areas I feel are more in line with my commitment to working for the enlightenment of all sentient beings. It has been an honor to be of service to each of you through this web site. I wish you all happiness and peace. I invite you to follow my blog on Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology http://mindfulpsyche.blogspot.com

This is a New Moon to look deeply at the nature of desire and how it feeds the most destructive aspects of human life. So before we launch into the most negative aspects of Leo, let’s first relish in the positive. Leo carries an inner vision sourced in a deep desire to powerfully express personal creativity. More than any other sign, Leo rules creative actualization of the self; the ego. Ego is the self, knowing and creatively actualizing itself, in all its complexity and beauty… yes, complexity and beauty. The more we know about who we are the more complex our view of self becomes and consequently we begin to become more adept at skillfully dealing with a wider rage of experience. This is what I call creative mindfulness: opening awareness to a deeper, yet broader experience of the ramifications of action.

This New Moon, the Sun/Moon conjunction opposes the Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune conjunction in Aquarius. This is a call to each of us to use our talents as best we are able to bring radical change to our world through a total embrace of our personal power. Mercury and Saturn in Virgo, the healer/humanitarian, opposing Uranus in Pisces, give us access to the mental and physical tools to raise the level of consciousness of every being so we can all resonate to the shared vision of our ultimate inseparability from each other. This is the New Moon to redefine personal power as a means to engender communal empowerment, coexistence and upliftment; in other words, true leadership. Leo’s most evolved form is the inspirational, full-hearted teacher/leader.

With Mercury in service-oriented Virgo, Venus in compassionate Cancer, and Mars in open-minded Gemini, this is the perfect New Moon to look deeply at how much of what you say and do, is done to appease an inner need for attention and recognition of specialness, rather than a selfless, heartfelt, compassionate desire to heal. True self-esteem is built by developing a calm center from which all decisions are made and all actions are undertaken. A real leader feels a tremendous responsibility to share their talent in an effort to make life better for everyone around us. Use this New Moon to look at how much of your time you share your talents to help others in need.

This is a good New Moon for artists to review the direction of their work. If there ever was a New Moon in Leo to reassess your artistic vision this is it. The New Moon in Leo is all about discovering your personal aesthetic and finding the right modus operandi for expressing it. Artists can use this New Moon to start a new project or initiate a new direction, build a stronger belief in your own vision, or bolster the ability to handle the vast amount of rejection most artists face at one time or another.

Leo wants us all to understand that our lives are one big canvas and we get to fill it with whatever we want. So dream a little…all right, dream a lot. The way of Leo is big, big, big! Think, “Big-budget Hollywood”. It might be a bit harder with Saturn and Mercury in realistic/no-risk Virgo, but try to consider what your life would be like if you embraced the risk-taking romantic that lives inside of you, buried deep beneath the weight of all your worldly responsibilities. Pick one area of your life and give it over to this part of you. You’ll be amazed at what can happen!

Let’s not forget this is the New Moon for romance. When it comes to love, Leo loves romance; full-blown choreographed romance. But before you get the idea that this is romance without forethought, the security-driven needs of Venus in Cancer along with the realism of Saturn and Mercury in Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn, may make that ultra-romantic dive into the arms of your lover happen only after a serious discussion about long-term commitment. If you are just not getting enough attention from your partner, or you are lonely and looking for love, this is the New Moon to create a powerful ritual to invoke and invite romance into your life. You might want to include your significant other in this New Moon ritual; especially if intimacy and romance is a big problem area in your relationship. If you tend to be very critical of your partner, Mars (sexuality) in Gemini (open-mindedness) makes this a good time to look deeply at your own idealistic needs.

All of these placements make this is a New Moon to put some serious work into mindfully paying attention to how you love, who you love, and the quality of the love that gets exchanged. Make the ritual a love-fest and pull out all the stops: candles, wine, roses, anything to awaken the senses. For those of you who wish to invite love into your lives, do the same while envisioning “Mr. or Ms. Right” being right there with you. You can invite love into your life with clear intention and a strong desire to love and be loved.

If you tend toward the Leo drama-queen spectrum of emotional expression, you could use this Moon to do some powerful healing work with your inner “enfant terrible”. Mercury and Saturn in Virgo makes this a very good New Moon cycle to take a hard look at your own emotional reactivity; especially if you suffer with mood swings. It is possible to love deeply, feel deeply, and create deeply, without wreaking havoc in your own life and the lives of those around you.

Leo often gets hooked into the importance of keeping up appearances (especially with Venus (beauty) in Leo; how we look, what we own, what we do, become, for many people, the definers of self. More than anything Leo wants to be noticed and appreciated. But the goal here is not to simulate a fashion model or movie star. The idea is to allow your appearance to reflect the beauty inside your heart, soul and mind. Healthy lifestyles are extremely important, and right now obesity is one of the greatest health problems in America. So if you need some inspiration to get in shape and feel better, this is the right New Moon start a diet and exercise program. Some of you may just want to experiment with a new hairstyle or try a new look. This is good time to indulge a little, by gifting yourself with healing treatments for your body. Live a little and treat yourself to something special. Leo rules our perception of physical beauty.

Most of us have a very unhealthy relationship with the process of aging. There is little acceptance of the beauty and wisdom inherent in growing older. Though this is an especially hard issue to tackle on a Leo New Moon, Saturn, the ruler of mortality, should lend seriousness to any consideration of what it means to age gracefully. Saturn calls up all kinds of fear around becoming old, ugly, frail and useless. This would be a good night to read myths and stories about older, wise women and men and then imagine yourself at 70, 80 or 90. What will you look like? What will you wear? How will you be spending your time? What will our world look like and how will it receive or reject you? What gifts will you be giving to the younger generations around you? Hopefully this exercise may inspire you to commit some of your time and talent to nurturing the elders in your family or community.

Strong Meteor Shower Expected Tonight

The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.
In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but late Tuesday night and also Wednesday night could prove fruitful, weather permitting.

Already underway
The Perseids are bits of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has laid down several streams of debris, each in a slightly different location, over the centuries as it orbits the sun. Every August, Earth passes through these debris streams, which spread out over time.
"They are typically fast, bright and occasionally leave persistent trains," says Joe Rao, SPACE.com's Skywatching Columnist. "And every once in a while, a Perseid fireball will blaze forth, bright enough to be quite spectacular and more than capable to attract attention even in bright moonlight."
Low numbers of Perseids, including some
Most meteors are no bigger than a pea. They vaporize as they enter Earth's atmosphere, creating
The Perseids appear to emanate from the constellation Perseus, which rises high in the sky around midnight and is nearly overhead by dawn. Like most meteor showers, the hours between midnight and daybreak are typically the best time to watch, because that's when the side of Earth you are on is rotating into the direction of Earth's travels through space, so meteors are "scooped up" by the atmosphere at higher rates, much like a car's windshield ends the lives of more bugs than does the rear bumper.
Astronomers expect up to 200 meteors per hour in short bursts of up to 15 minutes or so. But many of the fainter meteors will simply not be visible due to moonlight, and rates will go down even more for those in urban areas. More likely a typical observer under reasonably dark skies might hope to see a meteor every couple minutes when the bursts come, and fewer during lulls.
When to watch
The
Meteor forecasting is still in its infancy, however, so the best bet for anyone truly hungry to spot shooting stars is to get in as much observing time as possible from around 11 p.m. Tuesday night until dawn Wednesday, and if you miss that show, try the same time frame Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
Meteors should be visible in the pre-dawn hours, weather permitting, all around the Northern Hemisphere.
"Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream sometime on Aug. 12," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Then, you could see dozens of meteors per hour."
Viewing tips
The best location is far from city and suburban lights. Ideally, find a structure, mountain or tree to block the moon. Then scan as much of the sky as possible. The meteors can appear anywhere, heading in any direction. If you trace their paths backward, they'll all point to the constellation Perseus.
People in locations where any chill might occur should dress warmer than they think necessary to allow for prolonged viewing.
Seasoned skywatchers advise using a blanket or lounge chair for comfort, so you can lie back and look up for long periods. Allow at least 15 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Then expect meteors to be sporadic: You might see two in a row, or several minutes could go by between shooting stars.
Avid meteor watchers might want to try scanning the northeastern horizon from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time (your local time, wherever you are) for Perseids that graze the horizon.
"Earthgrazers are meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping across the surface of a pond," Cooke explained. "They are long, slow and colorful – among the most beautiful of meteors." He notes that an hour of watching may net only a few of these at most, but seeing even one can make the whole night worthwhile.

Aquarius rules the global community and also the global call for change. You might be wondering what can I—one small person—possibly do to have a positive effect on the precarious situation of the world? A very Aquarian thing: radicalize your relationship to the world by accepting the power you have to change your own mind, and through this, affect change on a global scale. This is a night to step into the role of mentor and renounce the attraction to focusing only on your own life. Selfless giving to others is a true Aquarian vision of working for the collective upliftment of all sentient beings. This is the Full Moon for involvement in something larger than you.
The Aquarian Full Moon, Neptune (Bodhisattvic intention) Jupiter (the benefactor), and Chiron (the healer) in Aquarius, Saturn (responsibility)/Mercury (thoughts and speech) in Virgo (service), Pluto in get-it-done Capricorn, Venus (love) in compassionate Cancer, Mars (action) in open-minded Gemini, and Uranus in Pisces (awakened consciousness) will help us all rest deeply in the realization that our individual egos are not the center of the universe. We are part and parcel of something so much deeper.
The Dalai Lama says, "The belief that there is a substantially real self, and the cherishing of one’s own interest at the expense of others, are the two main thoughts and emotions we have nurtured within us through our many lives. But what is the result of this? We are continually suffering and experiencing negative thoughts and emotions, so our self-cherishing hasn’t really got us very far. Also, if we shift our focus from ourselves to others and to the wider world, and if we turn our attention to all the crises in the world, all the difficulties and the sufferings and so on, we will see that many of these problems are direct or indirect consequences of undisciplined negative states of mind," 2003, Transforming the Mind, Thorsons Publishing.
The unending conflicts around the world have made it even more apparent that compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, patience, virtue, equanimity, determination, and wisdom are essential qualities for cultivating peace. Can you imagine if everyone committed to practicing these humble, heart-opening, mind-transforming ways of being in the world? So much would change. It’s time we stopped convincing ourselves of our own importance and preciousness. Our failure to care about anything outside of our own little lives lies at the heart of our cultural acceptance of the two most aberrant expressions of Leo: greed and a lust for power. So let’s all use this Aquarius Full Moon to transform our minds and get really involved in something bigger than our own personal stories.
Moon/Neptune/Chiron/Jupiter will help us step boldly into the Aquarian side of the Aquarius/Leo polarity. Though Leo is the sign with the greatest attachment to knowing and creatively expressing the self, many astrologers call Aquarius the sign of individuation. This is due to the fact that Aquarian individuation goes past the Leo recognition of self to oneself: it proclaims self-knowledge to the community in the hope that this will awaken in others an awareness of their own condition. Remember that Aquarius rules the breakdown of the old ways by questioning the status quo. Those who create revolutionary change in societies are always the ones who can vision far beyond accepted beliefs and structures. In these troubled times, we all need to follow President Obama's lead and practice this kind of farsightedness.
This is the Full Moon to honor freedom, idealism, humanitarianism, egalitarianism, and the revolutionary impulse toward reform, without causing harm to anyone. Aquarius is the impulse to raise-up everyone and leave no one behind. So in service to these calls to action, become responsible and find out what is really happening around you. Get involved in your community, volunteer your time, and raise awareness in your neighborhood. It’s summer, have a block party and raise funds for a good cause.
This is the Full Moon to wake up, and get politically/spiritually active (two of the most powerful expressions of Uranus/Aquarius!) Remember "a government of the people, by the people and for the people"? Let go of complacency and urge your family and friends to join you in speaking out against injustice, impoverishment and war. Get involved in working to fix our broken healthcare system and our outdated air/rail transportation industries. Let’s get off oil and work to heal the global environmental and economic crisis.
Speaking spiritually, the Aquarius/Leo polarity is a bridge to enlightenment. The Leo desire to seek, to grow, to be wise and all knowing, leads us to do the hard work that is necessary to evolve our consciousness in order to achieve enlightenment. Uranus represents the enlivenment of kundalini, the life force that resides, curled up like a snake at the base of the spine. The awakening and rising of kundalini is the source of the powerful waves of ecstasy we experience during orgasm. Imagine the intensity of that force flowing all the way up the spine and searing skyward from the top of your head, awakening you to the ultimate orgasmic experience of pure consciousness: "I am that, thou art that, all this is that". Without this Uranian bridge there is no awakening to the Neptunian/Piscean nirvanic state of enlightenment.
Here’s an Aquarian vision: creating a nation of enlightened individuals is the only means to real security. It is time to make group meditation mandatory practice in our schools and workplaces. Get ready for the next Full Moon in Pisces and start making group meditation part of your Full Moon celebration. Now more than ever, the world needs our attention and care. This is, after all, a Full Moon; a time of gathering in groups to celebrate, teach, share, and most of all enlighten.

Total Solar Eclipse

This second New Moon in Cancer will be a whopper, with a total solar eclipse, which sadly will not be visible from North America. To get more information, visit NASA’s Eclipse Homepage.
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2009/TSE2009.html this year we get a second chance at diving deep into the compassionate heart within and without. The eclipse follows a pathway over India and crosses through Nepal, Bhutan, Burma and China. How interesting that this eclipse is seen in the skies above nations that have wrought destruction and tyranny upon a populace that practices the bodhidharma, the ultimate path to cultivating a compassionate heart. This eclipse demands that the governments of China and Burma stop their violent repression of the peoples of Tibet and Burma, who have suffered and lost so much. This eclipse demands the rest of the world to do everything it can to free the people of Tibet and Burma from these repressive regimes that lord over them with such hatred. The Jupiter/Neptune/Chiron conjunction in Aquarius is now inconjunct Sun and Moon in Cancer. This represents the pain and suffering caused by withholding the heart, making change almost impossible. On this New Moon of love, we must accept the responsibility to cultivate the intention for living each day as a loving, heartful, mindfully, compassionate being. Recognizing the sources of suffering is a compassionate act in itself. Clear seeing of the causes of suffering leads to the desire to end all forms of our own suffering and the suffering of others. On this New Moon, we can go one step further and take action to make reduction of suffering a reality.
So
This total eclipse resonates with the energy of this excerpt from “The Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva” by the 13th century Tibetan monk and scholar Gyalse Togme.
"In short, whatever I may do through my activities
I ask, “What is my mind doing?”
Thus, it is the practice of bodhisattvas to accomplish the benefit of others With continuous mindfulness and conscientious."
Please read the New Moon in Cancer from June for more in-depth information about how you can use this New Moon in a personal way.

If you feel like you are pushing a huge boulder up a steep hill on this Full Moon in Capricorn, blame it on retrograde Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron. Ouch! Well, what other Full Moon could face this kind of struggle by shrugging its shoulders, and saying, “So what else is new?” Thank you Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, the great teacher of how to handle hardship, struggle and reality, with commitment, follow-through and guts. So though this is the Full Moon to celebrate goals and achievement, with this kind of planetary resistance to moving forward, we can also celebrate small steps, realistic goal-setting, and being successful when faced with tremendous limitations. Going forward has its right time and right place. This is the night to look within, connect with one’s own sense of proper timing and trust the wisdom that arises from this kind of inquiry. Remember retrograde planets are ideal for inner work, especially with Mercury (mind) in Cancer.

This is the Full Moon of the Guru: Guru Purnima. A night dedicated to thanking all our teachers, in every walk of life; especially the difficult ones who challenge us to reach deep within to feel love and compassion. You might want to do metta practice in your ritual as you celebrate the teachers in your life: your kids, parents, siblings, lover, partner, spouse, co-workers, bosses, professors, etc. Wishing them well with metta is a beautiful way to celebrate the gifts they give to you and return the sentiment through the heart of compassion. You can find recorded metta practices on my web site: http://www.lisadalemiller.com/metta.htm

When the Moon is full in Capricorn, the Sun is in Cancer, the sign that rules emotional connectedness, nurturance, compassion, and personal expressions of love. Because the Moon rules Cancer, when the Moon is posited in Capricorn (the sign opposite its natural zodiacal energy) this makes for a special energetic symbiosis between the Sun and Moon. Only at this time of year, can the Moon fully infuse the restrictive, withholding, structured, serious energy of Capricorn with its natural, energetic Cancerian open, flowing love and compassion. This is especially true with Mercury in Cancer (mind/heart connection). This is a celebration to enliven compassion for ourselves, especially in these uncertain and tough times. So use your ritual to bring compassion to bear upon your most critical, negative images and thoughts about yourself. Self-love is not a concept; it is active, and takes energy and time to develop. This is especially important with Saturn in self-critical and perfectionistic Virgo.

This Full Moon in Capricorn along with Pluto in Capricorn calls upon each of us to find the appropriate structures to express love and connectedness without manipulation. Pluto asks us if we can risk being fearless, honest and open with the ones we love. This is especially true when love is not our first response, or is drowned out by pain, fear and hatred (the domain of Capricorn/Saturn). Where Cancer feels almost childlike in its attachment to direct experience of emotive love, Capricorn knows that sacrifice and personal responsibility are the building blocks of true love, and realizes this goal with a special grace and maturity.

This is the Full Moon of tough love, facing the reality of love lost or denied. Don't underestimate the depth of understanding that a Capricorn Moon brings to the table, especially with all these retrograde planets. This is a huge invitation to look with depth at the suffering you create around love; Venus in Gemini asks us to be lighthearted and open-minded. To not take things so seriously, which is a good thing on a Capricorn Full Moon.

Saturn/Capricorn forces us to come to terms with fear. The old ways (Capricorn) steeped in solutions that arise from fear and war will not work. Sowing the seeds of fear, greed, hatred, and ignorance will never bring about freedom from fear. The Full Moon in Capricorn is the one night of the year when we can truly see our fear for what it is: a distinct inability to transcend the human-made irrational divisions of race, religion, nationality, and gender. There is no separateness, only love. All matter is made of love and therefore can only be love at its most basic, as well its highest expression. We need to create societal and governmental structures that solve these problems from a core belief in love and connectedness.

This will of course require a complete shift in human consciousness. We must move away from identification with the small egoic, self, mired in the ignorance of separateness, to the full experience of the unbounded, transcendent divine Self, realizing love as the true nature of all existent life. When we change the Self, we change everything. Do you think this goal is unrealistic? Not on this Full Moon. This is the Full Moon of hard work and accepting one's personal responsibility to heal the suffering of others. Did you know that most of the great spiritual teachers were born under the Sun sign of Capricorn? Why? To change human consciousness requires a Herculean commitment to achievement no matter how hard or how long the road. This is Capricorn at its best.

Listen up men! Saturn/Capricorn symbolizes the responsible, hardened male, and Saturn also rules depression. Though most people would agree that patriarchy has been detrimental for women, many don't consider how wounding it has been for men. Think of all the men you know who find it hard to talk about their feelings; particularly feelings of loss, vulnerability, sadness, and confusion. Violence, irritability, isolation and anger are often used by men to cover up emotions and feelings that require vulnerability. Interestingly, along with substance abuse, violence, irritability, isolation and anger are often symptoms of male depression. Our society requires that men always have it together, or at least give off the appearance of being fine. Few men admit to depression and even fewer go get therapeutic help. Consequently the highest rate of suicide in America is among men 55-70 years old. So guys, admitting you have depressive feelings is the first step, and right after that comes sharing it with a spouse or friend or adult child. Believe me they already know it and will be more than happy to support you and your journey to wellness. This is the Full Moon to reach out and get help. Find a therapist and a men's group in your area. Take responsibility for your own healing.

This is the night to reach deep into your well of strength and decide that achieving your own inner peace is the only goal worth attaining at this moment in our human evolution. This Full Moon simultaneously uncovers our fear and reflects the solution to our fear: acting only from love, compassion, and doing the hard work of relieving the suffering of all sentient beings by achieving enlightenment and inner peace. This is a very powerful and serious Full Moon-don't waste it!

New Moon in Cancer

Ah…a New Moon in Cancer, our chance to be held by the sweetness of love that pulsates through every living thing. With a Sun/Moon conjunction in Cancer in an exact opposition with Pluto in Capricorn, this is the New Moon to risk a full-hearted, active surrender into fearless compassion for self and others. Venus and Mars in Taurus trine Saturn in Virgo make it easy to recognize that compassion is real and must be acted upon in very practical ways. Doing for others who are unable to do for themselves, offering useful tools for sustenance and empowerment to those who have the will but lack the means, and teaching love as a prescription for healing the wounds of broken families, communities and nations. The Jupiter/Neptune/Chiron conjunction in Aquarius trine Sun and Moon in Cancer adds to the compassionate heart a generousness of spirit that is egalitarian and innovative.
If your life has been characterized by disconnection and alienation, this is the New Moon to honestly appraise the usefulness of defending against deeply felt emotional interactions with others. This is the time to look with real compassion at the insecurities and co-dependencies that arise from refusing to recognize and deal with inner emptiness. The exact opposition of Sun/Moon and Pluto will activate recognition of the ability to feel the extremes of existential meaninglessness and complete spiritual interconnectedness. The beauty of the human heart lies is its ability to feel a full range of emotion that arises when faced with the fundamental paradox of the human condition: we are essentially alone and ultimately one with all other existent life. Humans seek love and relationship in order to feel whole; yet real wholeness arises from self-realization. If we listen to the longings of a lonely heart, we can find tools to help us surrender into the ocean of love that is always all around us; always accessible to us. Loving-kindness meditation practice is a wonderful tool to cultivate love for self and others. Here is a link to my recorded loving-kindness meditation practices.
Cancer is about emotional nurturance and above all craves emotional security. Need I mention that it takes at least two to heal a relationship? This means that if you want to work on a relationship, this is one of the few New Moons where ritual is best done with all involved parties present and ready to do some serious work. Remember that half the battle is finding a way to express truth with love (Moon in Cancer) and a willingness to see the reality and deeper meaning of any relationship (Pluto in Capricorn.)
Cancer represents the archetypal nurturing Mother that lives in both genders. Cancer rules family, home, and the archetypal mothering energy. Saturn in Virgo adds the energy of the archetypal father to this New Moon. This is the best New Moon to work on your home life and the quality of interaction that goes on in your family. Though nothing is more important than family, it’s hard not to get caught up in the day-to-day hassles of family life. These days, most families are overwhelmed and harried by a never-ending cycle of work, school and extra-curricular activities. Since rushed lives leave little time to just "be" together, this is the New Moon to make a commitment to bringing relaxation back into the family schedule. We all need time to stop and really appreciate our loved ones: to fully embrace them, look deeply into their eyes, allowing the heart to soar in the recognition of oneness.
Generation gaps often create poor relationships between parents and children. This is especially so with teenagers who need to separate and parents who desperately want to protect. This is a great New Moon to redefine rules and extend boundaries for teenagers, by creating a contract that is based on mutual respect, personal responsibility and trustworthiness. Supporting a teenager’s need for independence can be done with love.
This is also a great New Moon to engage in healing work around your own childhood/family system issues. Most of us come at our adult lives based on our desire to recreate or disengage from our family patterns of behavior. Astrology is a great tool for delineating introjected familial patterns of behavior that affect our behavior in current relationships. Once the issues are delineated, there are many psychotherapeutic techniques for working on healing childhood trauma, and this is a great New Moon cycle to investigate issues of and methods for emotional healing. For those of you that have emotional issues with people who are no longer available, this is the New Moon to use the powerful psychic and intuitive power of Cancer to work on an energetic level and heal your own internal pain. Sometimes Cancer never knows when to cut the cords and stop trying to take care of other people. This is the right New Moon to take a hard look at your own patterns of neediness and codependency and let go of any strong attachments to constant worry.
This is the right New Moon to begin letting go of old defense and protection mechanisms that may be doing you, and your relationships, more harm than good. Do you crave love as a way to fill up your own inner emptiness? Do you mother others as a way to bury your own inadequacies in feelings of power? Do you hold on to unhealthy relationships because of a deep sense of unworthiness? The answers to these important questions often teach us much about our own underlying motivations for being loved.
This is a great New Moon to investigate the Sacred Feminine and incorporate this wisdom into your daily life and by extension, into our world. The Way of the Sacred Feminine is one of love, caring, understanding, compassion, peace and joy. Our world suffers from a lack of Her presence and Her values in our governmental, educational, business and religious institutions. It is of course our job to reinvigorate our workplaces, communities, schools and politics with Her wisdom.
The New Moon in Cancer rules the power of the archetypal feminine. Women have to support each other in an effort to take our places as heads of State, corporate leaders and religious authorities. There is no one that will free us: we must liberate ourselves and insist that the way of the heart, the language and action of love is the only policy we will support with our votes and with our dollars. Women have the power, but we consistently refuse to use it. Let us not abdicate any longer! Use some of your ritual time to release indifference and inaction and come up with a personal action-plan to empower women.
Since Cancer rules caregiving, this is the New Moon to look at how much you give to those in need, especially with Mar/Venus in Taurus and Saturn in Virgo. Do you volunteer at a local school, shelter, food bank, environmental group, children’s educational service, eldercare facility or hospice? How much have you extended your definition of family? One of my favorite Cancer New Moon cycle activities is to go through my house and gather up clothing and belongings I haven’t used for the last year, and then donate them. It reduces clutter in my own life and allows me to share the wealth with others.
For those of you who use your intuitive skills in your work, this is certainly the time to start any new programs of study to increase your intuition. Those of you who call yourselves healers and spiritual teachers should use this New Moon to look at your own motivations. Do you crave attention and get off on the neediness of others? Are you disempowering through advice-giving, rather than empowering a client’s ability to find their own answers, their own inner healing? Sun/Moon opposing Pluto require an honest appraisal of your own emotional agendas and desire for power. How much our own work as healers is rooted in a narcissistic need for love and attention? So don’t be afraid to ask yourself these tough questions. In the end it can only benefit your clients.
Any of you who wish to get in touch with your own intuitive capabilities couldn’t ask for a more psychically potent New Moon than this one. Try asking for wisdom while gazing into a bowl of water or crystal ball or drawing a few cards from a Tarot deck. You will be amazed at how much contact you already have with your own inner truth. You already have your own answers, and ready access to them. It is just a matter of opening up to your own inner voice and then trusting it. This is certainly the perfect New Moon to open the channel to inner wisdom and self-knowing.
So take care of your emotional life by committing to an insistence on love and kindness in all your interactions. This is the way of Cancer!
