Hola muchachos /// How long has it been? Too long. Way too long. As the cybernetic world evolves and flourishes further, I follow suit. I've come to embrace RSS, Facebook, the juvenile beginnings of my own website and the intent to synthesize my external (to myspace anyway) blog within such. I barely click the 'MySpace' link in my bookmarks anymore. The world is ever changing, hop on the trolley and type in your username dude. Salut my friends /// Upon the birthing cusp of this month I boarded "The Eagle" in Hyannis (MA) with destinate coordinates aimed towards Nantucket Island. Ten years ago as a young punk, I had journeyed to the island of Nantucket to savor it's picturesque beaches, it's free-flowing alcohol, and it's gorgeous women. A decade later, I returned to the island with an entirely different protocol: enjoy. The two-hour journey via ferry reinforces the spectacular grandeur of the destination. I immediately fell in love with the vivid blue benches lining all decks of the water-savvy vessel and hence felt obligated to visually document such. Sometimes the simplest things satiate our senses . . . Salut Comrades /// The third supplement of my visual wanderings with JJC in Oakland lays before you. In the later afternoon hours prior to a profoundly satiating meal in Chinatown, we weaved in and out of Chinatown into Downtown and back again, capturing that which captured our eye. We could no longer ignore the grumbles our stomachs diligently put forth effort into making more and more audible, enter Legendary Palace. This place was epically retarded, palatial even >wink<, the food did it's job, but the space was much more rewarding than the grubbins. I remember it like yesterday . . . Greets and salutations /// Yearning for a fresh photographic playground, I recently journeyed into Oakland on the eastern bank of San Francisco Bay to hook up with fellow street clicker JJC. We snapped off for nearly seven hours, from the sun-laden afternoon on into dusk (AKA "The Magic Hour", my most cherished time of day), followed by the velvety black ceiling of night. We covered a reputable distance adding mileage to both soles and soul, roaming about with an eye in the viewfinder and a finger atop the shutter. A profuse quantity of imagery was gathered, all visual evidence of an incredible day. Due to the friggity fuck load of flicks, I've decided to divide my ocular Oakland journey into a series of parts, or chapters if you will. A measure to maintain attention span as well as provide a more concentrated taste of each area or time of day we captured. Welcome to Part One. First stop was the flea market, a reasonably integral community event that truly encompasses "One man's trash is another man's treasure". A glorious gathering of civilian vendors slinging items we all accumulate over time, then come to terms with the fact that we really don't need this or these at all, but maybe I can squeeze a few bucks out of it. Someone else comes along, feels pangs of short term excitement, throws down a few bucks, and hence the cycle repeats itself. The Laney College Flea Market is a mildly gridded separation of an entire city's flotsam and jetsam up for sale, complete with roasted corn on a stick and port-o-johns. Spectacular. Here's an eye-savvy smattering of what it was all about, with a dollop of whimsy and delicious color galore. May you too someday find your treasure, no matter where it's buried. Nei hou ma /// As previous visual evidence suggests: I love alleys. There is an unsung beauty that intrigues mine eyes as I embark down a neglected capillary of the city's streets. Alley's represent a backside to urban life, a behind the scenes mentality that gets me juiced. Chinatown (SF style, anyway), has the most incredible eye-fodder when it comes to the visual aspect of backstreets. Color in addition to the ebb and flow of pedestrian traffic, grit, grime and arcane, forgotten components of infrastructure are laid out in plain sight for those who seek it out. There are only a handful of these backside paved pathways within Chinatown, all of them are a true sight that a camera will never to this day, do justice. I did my best. A few of these clicks are from the market hubbub of Stockton Street: the true Chinatown, Grant Street is for tourists . . . Don't ever ignore curiosity, it's one of the many ingredients found in the fountain of youth. Salut /// I ventured into the Dogpatch hood to see friend and artist Phillip Hua at his studio in the Noonan Building. Phil’s studio is a beautiful disarray of colorful canvases, tools, papers of all kinds, rows of vibrant paints, brushes, painting knives, cardboard scraps and multiple projects all in various stages of completion. All is washed in a warm natural light that bursts through the large westward facing windows, illuminating the creative impulses at hand and oh yes, NPR plays on the radio in the background. This was an interesting challenge for me as I (to put it lightly), despise taking pictures of people. However, I craved a change of pace, I feel a tweak in subject matter refreshes your eyes and perspective, or "stepping outside of the box" if you will. Phillip is currently represented by Hang Art located at 556/7 Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco, to scope out his work or drop him a note, peep his website: www.philliphua.com. Keep your eyes open, your mind fresh and vice versa. Bones out. 001 002 003 004 005 006 007 008 009 / //// / /// /// / / / / ///// //// / // /// / // / / / / // 010 The Noonan Building :: Dogpatch :: San Francisco :: California :: US :: 03.27.08

Salut /// One of the most incredible attributes of graffiti is it’s ability to effortlessly morph the mundane into the magical, a synthesis of color and form slicing through drainpipes, door frames and heat vents. Transforming a rather dismal space into a celebration of vivid hues, flowing lines and just straight up beauty. Frisco offers up a shitload of this specific art form, some of my favorite stretches are found in the Haight Street area. Specifically in an alley adjacent to Amoeba Music, a testament and a sheer wonderland of "street art". Greets /// Today was one of the most incredible days of my life, another wonderful chapter in the "Book of Bones". The weather was absolutely sublime in comparison to the past two solid weeks of cold rain. Sun with spattered clouds and a glorious temperature, one of the first days in a while where no jacket was required. This being said, I walked the shit outta this city today, toting the cam along for the ride. I began in Western Addition, walked through Japantown, Cathedral Hill, Polk Gulch, Nob Hill, Chinatown into the Financial District, then onto North Beach. I was critically selective of what I captured, as simply being outside in the splendor of the day was first priority. I stumbled upon Quincy Street, a small "half-alley" on the backside of Chinatown cusping the Financial District. I immediately fell in love with the grit, the grime, the textures, the colors, the lines, and the light was perfect. I pretty much sprayed my shorts, in awe of the visual goldmine I was fortunate enough to discover. I met up with a dear friend in North Beach and we conversed while sipping a couple of cold tallboys in the waning afternoon sun perched upon the steps of where Montgomery Street meets Union Street. A supreme vista with a stellar view of downtown and beyond, truly a superb pocket of the city that I look forward to venturing towards again. As the sun slid behind the stacks of glass, steel and concrete, we made our way to the other side of the hill to Washington Square Park to soak in the final rays of sunlight for the day. All in all, a truly wonderful day. I continuously find myself falling head over heals in love with this fucking city. Keep it flowing and keep it going. Oy /// Been away from the digital realm for many moons. Anti-Cyber-Social. The rain has kept me and the cam at bay, but the cravings to hit the street and snap off grow exponentially. I was recently able to grab some clicks as the clouds parted only for a moment's grace. I sincerely hope all of you are well in your respective corners of the world. Shouts from San Francisco.
