TEA COZIES
HOT PROBS
A-

If the sound of blistering guitars on the opening track, "Boys at the Metro," doesn't get a listener's attention, the "hey!" shouts will make it clearly known that Seattle's Tea Cozies are not willing to go unnoticed. Following a 5-song EP, which received airplay on Seattle's KEXP and numerous Internet radio stations, Tea Cozies continue to deliver an enticing mix of '60s girl pop and swirling garage rock on their full-length debut, Hot Probs.

With sweet harmonies and 3/4ths of the band being female, Tea Cozies possess the raw sound similar to that of bands like Vivian Girls, but the energy is at a much higher level and more likely to provoke people to dancing. While there are plenty of angelic seesaw rhythms and cute lyrics, such as, "I had a boy and he had a bike and we got along real nice," vocalists Jessi Reed and Brady Harvey are also witty and sharp-tongued. Pop culture icons Steven Spielberg, Oscar Wilde, Fred Astaire and Mary Shelley find their way into songs among words of wisdom, which reveal, "Even pretty pages crack in old books/ You can't rely on your good looks."

The music arrangements are just as interesting to listen to as the lyrics. Tea Cozies have a standard rock set-up -- with two guitars, bass, drums, and the occasional organ -- but they manage to incorporate unexpected twists and turns into songs. "Like Luca Brasi" switches back and forth from an upbeat pace to a dreamy stride, which happens a bit sudden but still sounds seamless. The song, which is about a girl who is hesitant to go swimming while on a trip with friends, but is convinced to do so and ends up drowning, summarizes the band pretty well. However, unlike the girl in the story who did not listen to her instincts, Tea Cozies are very instinctive. The band members are loud and forceful when they feel the need and slow it down if they get the urge, which adds a lot of diversity to the album.

For every straightforward pop track on Hot Probs, there is one rocking garage or soothing psychedelic track to counteract the sugary goodness. "Corner Store Girls" can be best described as bibbity bop as images of bunnies hopping in meadows, bees buzzing in gardens, and couples rollerskating at the boardwalk come to mind. The song is followed by "The South Turned Him Sour," which contains rich and gritty sounds of roller derbies and hot rod racing.

Toward the end of the album, the music loses a bit of momentum as songs become slower and more psychedelic. There are some instances where the vocalists sound bored, but that could be mistaken with bravado. Even as the songs slow down, there is a strong aura of confidence, but it is never pretentious.

In this June's Seattle Sound Magazine, KEXP DJ John Richards picks out five NW bands to listen to this summer. Check it -

BRING THE HEAT

Tea Cozies

"I'm not going to lie to you: When I see a name like that, I assume bad things. Of course, I thought that when a band named Death Cab For Cutie gave me its first release. This band brings to mind early Breeders or Elastica, and there ain't nothing cozy about that."

The other four NW bands to listen to while you wear your floaties at the pool: Beads, Ironclads, Born Anchors & Dyme Def

here is very neat review of our new album from astra over at easy street records:Locals Only Review!
Seattle should be proud, and I don’t mean of the Fleet Foxes. Tea Cozies have stepped into the light and deservedly so. In my humble opinion, they’ve brought their female-dominated girl pop to a new peak in their latest release, Hot Probs. This album rocks…in a really pretty way.We could say the Breeders or even L7 had a major influence on this band, but I honestly think the Cozies deserve more credit than that. This album is more creative, more hooky, and way more dynamic than anything I’ve heard from a female-fronted band in a long time. Hot Probs is saturated with radiant harmonies and chimey, ringing guitars, with supercool keys scattered about (is that a Mellotron?) and enough changes to captivate the worst case of ADD. Many of the songs have the complimentary voices of both Brady Harvey and Jessi Reed. My favorite is “Like Luca Brasi,” an ultra-catchy, Pixies-ish sounding tune about drowning. It’s driving and poppy, with dramatic time signature changes that capture the tragedy of drowning in an upbeat, happy melody. I also like “The South Turned Him Sour,” a howling, urgent ditty punctuated by the cowbell and distorted guitar. What stands out to me about all the tracks on Hot Probs is the diversity. No two songs sound alike, yet it is totally obvious that Tea Cozies are responsible for all of them. It would be safe to bet that these gals have created exactly what they were aiming for. Hot Probs is very well written, performed and engineered. Like I said before, Seattle should be proud.-Astra, Easy Street Records Staff Pick

Tea Cozies keep your heart warm

Liz Caskey                                       2/6/09

As Britney Spears and boy bands alike continue to grace our radio waves
with their repetitive and monotonous sound, it is a wonder how our
musical souls have managed to survive. Thankfully, every once in
awhile, a band is born that is able to give you the musical revival
you've been in need of … the hardest part is finding them.

The Tea Cozies, a relatively unknown band, serve up the originality and ingenuity that you've been craving.

Based
out of Seattle, the Tea Cozies have managed to create a sound that is
all their own on their debut self-titled E.P. They were officially
formed in December 2005 after the three original female members, Jessi
Reed (guitar and vocals), Brady Harvey (guitar, vocals and keys) and
Kelly Viergutz (drums) were joined by the "brave" lone male member of
the group, Jeff Anderson (bass). Together they have concocted a unique
sound that has begun to grow in popularity amongst the local Seattle
music scene.

Their sound is difficult to put a finger on. They
seem to be a mix of Indie and old school British pop, but it really
depends on what track you're listening to at the moment. One reporter
from the "Portland Mercury" said the Tea Cozies sound like "…if
Deerhoof popped a chill pill and started hanging with the Rondelles."
The band itself claims to be "the bastard child of Elastica and the
Talking Heads." Yet, no matter the category, the music is nothing short
of stellar.

The two lead singers, Reed and Harvey, have
completely contrasting voices that add depth and interest to their
songs. Reed brings a soft sweet sound to the tracks while Harvey's
raspy, harsh voice adds a necessary ruggedness. The juxtaposing voices
are on perfect display on the track "Tranciting" which is by far the
best and most upbeat song on the track. However, the more somber
tracks, also featured on the album, should not be ignored. "Olivia" is
an intense and deep track with lyrics worth listening intently to. The
only complaint I have about the group is that there are only five
tracks on the album.

While their E.P. is revolutionary, the best
way to experience the Tea Cozies is live. They put on a great show,
complete with sarcastic commentary and goofy personalities. Somehow I
managed to stumble upon the Tea Cozies playing a live concert this
summer in Seattle and was instantly hooked. The Tea Cozies alone are
worth the journey to the rainy Northwest. The best way to keep up on
the band's newest tracks is through their myspace music page, which
also announces their upcoming show schedule.

With their unique and unheard sound, the Tea Cozies are the band that your soul's been waiting for.

Oh, and by the way, we'll have CD release info VERY VERY SOON.
Keep your ears perked!

xoxo,
Cozies
