REPOST from Ron Paul's blog:Imagine - Essay by Congressman Ron Paul - May 9 2009 Current mood: cynical Category: News and Politics Imagine - By Congressman Ron Paul March 9, 2009"Imagine for a moment that somewhere in the middle of Texas there was a large foreign military base, say Chinese or Russian. Imagine that thousands of armed foreign troops were constantly patrolling American streets in military vehicles. Imagine they were here under the auspices of “keeping us safe” or “promoting democracy” or “protecting their strategic interests.” Imagine that they operated outside of US law, and that the Constitution did not apply to them. Imagine that every now and then they made mistakes or acted on bad information and accidentally killed or terrorized innocent Americans, including women and children, most of the time with little to no repercussions or consequences. Imagine that they set up check points on our soil and routinely searched and ransacked entire neighborhoods of homes. Imagine if Americans were fearful of these foreign troops, and overwhelmingly thought America would be better off without their presence. Imagine if some Americans were so angry about them being in Texas that they actually joined together to fight them off, in defense of our soil and sovereignty, because leadership in government refused or were unable to do so. Imagine that those Americans were labeled terrorists or insurgents for their defensive actions, and routinely killed, or captured and tortured by the foreign troops on our land. Imagine that the occupiers’ attitude was that if they just killed enough Americans, the resistance would stop, but instead, for every American killed, ten more would take up arms against them, resulting in perpetual bloodshed. Imagine if most of the citizens of the foreign land also wanted these troops to return home. Imagine if they elected a leader who promised to bring them home and put an end to this horror. Imagine if that leader changed his mind once he took office. The reality is that our military presence on foreign soil is as offensive to the people that live there as armed Chinese troops would be if they were stationed in Texas. We would not stand for it here, but we have had a globe straddling empire and a very intrusive foreign policy for decades that incites a lot of hatred and resentment towards us. According to our own CIA, our meddling in the Middle East was the prime motivation for the horrific attacks on 9/11. But instead of re-evaluating our foreign policy, we have simply escalated it. We had a right to go after those responsible for 9/11, to be sure, but why do so many Americans feel as if we have a right to a military presence in some 160 countries when we wouldn’t stand for even one foreign base on our soil, for any reason? These are not embassies, mind you, these are military installations. The new administration is not materially changing anything about this. Shuffling troops around and playing with semantics does not accomplish the goals of the American people, who simply want our men and women to come home. 50,000 troops left behind in Iraq is not conducive to peace any more than 50,000 Russian soldiers would be in the United States. Shutting down military bases and ceasing to deal with other nations with threats and violence is not isolationism. It is the opposite. Opening ourselves up to friendship, honest trade and diplomacy is the foreign policy of peace and prosperity. It is the only foreign policy that will not bankrupt us in short order, as our current actions most definitely will. I share the disappointment of the American people in the foreign policy rhetoric coming from the administration. The sad thing is, our foreign policy WILL change eventually, as Rome’s did, when all budgetary and monetary tricks to fund it are exhausted."

Elizabeth Gilbert speaks for TED in this video. In the video, she argues against the modern western individualistic thought that people are genius by proposing that they simply have genius. I love her new phrasing of such an ancient idea. it is an idea that belongs to a people that don't praise self. it belongs to people who acknowledge that there is Something Greater than them. Early Christians called it "charisma" which is often translated as "spiritual gifts" and where we get the term "charismatic" from when describing sects that over-indulge in 'spiritual gifts'. Creativity is inherently imperfect and to propose that man is a constant genius is foolish. Richard Hell was right, but love isn't the only thing that comes in spurts. I've had several moments in my life where it was clear that something else was speaking through me. I've had moments where I swore someone transcended physical gifting and was channeling the very Spirit of the art the are conveying. It's a rare, strange, spiritual synergy that connects and unites us. This got me thinking about the state of the professional genius of any sort. Public speakers, politicians, athletes, poets, authors, artists, musicians, preachers... We can't expect these people to constantly produce flawless, inspiring or life-changing works. In the past, many artists were only allowed to make a living if they were paid by the state to create works that glorified their king or emperor, whatever. At times when the main objective in life was to simply survive and put food on your table, art and expression was less important. It was saved for the moments when your pot was boiling over and exploded in a beautiful creation. You didn't have so many professional artists. Art was woven into the fabric of every day life. the pottery, the stories told, clothing and religion. Everyone participated in perpetuating these arts. (((((One could argue that in the age now where we are blessed w/ infinite leisure time, that we have come full-circle in the fact that everyone is now capable of being an artist (with our current tools from the internet to phones w/ cameras, blogs, etc))))) I would argue that majority of great works are done by those who can actually harness a fleeting genius. In a time where man's main objective was to 'produce' and work. Sermons, poems, songs, dances all came from the little free time they had. No one was a professional preacher or dancer or poet. I think that few people can argue the purity of cowboy poetry, tribal dancing or an old-time country preacher. I think that we can also see the corruption of money in exchange for artistic services. Being involved with the music scene, many of us all know plenty of professional graphic designers or artists or musicians or hair stylists... or whatever... and in knowing them (and ourselves) we can often see the amount of pure drivel that often comes out in the form of one or two good works or ideas. If we were to focus on productive work that would help society at large... say farming and construction and healthcare... we might do much better to save the creative process only for those moments of genius that hit us in our every day lives that can't be ignored. The moments of creativity that slap us in the face and demand our attention. rather than the attention-desperate, attention-grabbing, attention whores trying to convince us that flashy, loud attention is genius. the moments in life that we truly remember are made by the people that portray genius around us in our every day lives. when we become starstruck, we worship a bi-product of genius... that can very seldom be channeled through ourselves. does any of this rambling make sense? it was all very free-flowing... please enjoy the video. I think it's a wonderful testament to the way that God works through all of His creation... especially in the creative process to create inarguable moments of pure genius.

So... Wang turned me on to this video of this adorable little French girl telling stories. It's ridiculous how adorable she is. absolutely... positively absurd. This little girl illicits faces from her viewers usually only reserved for Audrey Hepburn films and unicorn puppies... those reactions where you cock your head slowly to the side and crack a slow, slight smile, softly sigh and are right on the verge of releasing an audible "awwww..." when you snap to, straighten up, clear your throat and make sure no one saw you in what could be one of the gayest moments of your life. The video is a little long... (4:15)... but it gets crazier and better as the story goes along. If, after 10 seconds of viewing this, you don't want to scoop up her little eyeballs w/ a spoon and eat them, somethings probably wrong with you. And don't hate... this is just that good. I promise. Once upon a time... from Capucha on Vimeo. and if you get a chance to watch the entire video, check out the ol' "Yogurt on the Dress" video that she's in. "i have the solution. we will wash my dress.... and it will be clean." she's a genius! **They are also using the videos and viewings of the videos online to promote for EduRelief's project in Mongolia... i love when people use things in their every day life to help other people.

Sometimes you look at a photo and a person in that photo captivates you. Whether it's their somber glance, radiant smile, whatever. I don't know if you're aware of this, but LIFE just joined with Google, to bring their entire photo library online. You can now search and find images that weren't ever published. This is particularly awesome for me because some of my favorite LIFE photographs have been difficult to find until now. Many of them don't have names and are hard to describe when searching for images if you don't know the photographer's name, location of shoot, etc. Even then, you're not gauranteed to find it. I immediately went to see what resolution they had for one of my favorite images of all time. The image of Pablo Picasso painting a bull with a light at Madouro Pottery. I immediately found it and along with it, images that are outtakes from that shoot... a delightful peak behind the scenes... including one of his mistress, Françoise Gilot, painting with the light as well. What grabbed me, however, was this photo of Gilot: I've never read much about Gilot. In fact, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a photo of her. That look and that face gave me a new love and have determined what the next book I read will be... her autobiographic, Life With Picasso. And it also gives me something to look into the next time I visit Austin, as UT, aparantly has quite the collection of her works. Thanks, mistress.

... and now you know. I'm really stoked on this: DUKE - Channing Tatum RIPCORD - Marlan Wayans THE BARONESS - Sienna Miller(!) SCARLETT - Rachel Nichols SNAKE EYES - Ray Park (aka Darth Maul, aka Toad from XMen) it seems as though the story arc will be very similar to the Marvel comic, as opposed to the cartoon series. Which I really dig.... hopefully that includes the Scarlet/Snake Eyes relationship. There is no Tunnel Rat, QuickKick, Sgt. Slaughter or The Fridge but I'm still holding out for the Dreadnoks to be in the sequel: The Dreadnoks were probably my first punk rock idols.

**PLEASE REPOST**
The City of Dallas is not exactly known for it's fervor in preserving historic landmarks, buildings and other relics of our historical, cultural and architectural heritage.
I want to beseach you all to assist Preservation Dallas and other concerned citizens/musicians organizations to STOP BREAKIN DOWN 508 Park Ave.
Even though 508 Park Ave. is a Historical Landmark, it is not protected from demolition. The thought of losing this piece of musical/dallas heritage literally sends me into cold sweats. .. (or that could be the sugar free red bull i just drank). Regardless...
508 Park Ave. holds a lot of history. Besides it's unique curb appeal (sans transients) this building was home of the recordings of some of the most significant pieces of music history.
Robert Johnson," one of the most fabled and heralded of all musicians recorded most of his only 30 songs in the makeshift Brunswick Studio at 508 Park Ave. in Dallas. This includes his infamous "Stop Breakin Down Blues", among others listed at www.robertjohnsonfilm.com.
Robert Johnson's life is a mystery. A true legend, almost all known evidence of his existence is based on these few recordings. We don't know much of his family or where he played since he travelled often and set up on street-sides and at barber shops in cities along the way. There are conflicting tales of where he got his talent, including marvelous accounts of him selling his soul to the Devil and there are even 3 graves for him.
What we do know... is where he recorded his music. Music that earned him the title "the Grandfather of Rock'n'Roll". Johnson admirers range from blues greats like Son Volt & Muddy Waters to Brits Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton & Cream, Texas rockers ZZ Top and modern day indie garage acts like The White Stripes & Jesus Volt.
The heritage of this Grammy Hall of Fame, Blues Hall of Fame, Rock n Roll hall of fame artist cannot be overlooked and must be protected, especially in a city like Dallas where our notorious home of the blues, Deep Ellum, with it's own ties to greats like Blind Lemon are endangered as well.
According to one blog commenter at Unfair Park, the DCAD values the property at $376K. Thats pennies to a lot of investors and an easy to challenge for a group of determined citizens.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
1)Call or Write your local elected official... if you don't know which one is yours... got to www.dallascityhall.com and PICK ONE. Tell them to Stop Breakin' Down 508 Park Ave!
Talk to the Mayor, speak with any musicians you know. Contact those you know across the country (or otherwise), people in the music industry, arts and media that find significance in this piece of history and let them know the danger and potential of this historic landmark.
2)Blog, Twitter, Email anyone you know with this info. PASS IT ON!
3)Contact organizations that do this work everyday to let them know what you are doing on this building's behalf and to also see how you can volunteer or join in efforts like this one: www.preservationdallas.org

The only stations on the radio i listen to are 95.3, AM talk radio, AM coast to Coast and a little NPR. The Range is the only relevant station on the airwaves and the fact that they play songs like the one below explains why. "Well, I tried to listen, but all I see Are cartoon characters on TV. And they can't hear the difference today Between saying something and having something to say. Give me Waylon, Dylan, Haggard, and Jones. Give me just a little more meat on the bone. Johnny Cash come and take our hand And lead us back over to the promised land. Hey man, you went too far. Won't you bring back the radio star Ran a good thing into the ground When you started selling sight over sound. And the thing that saddens me the most Are the things that once mattered are now a ghost. Why don't you take a look at what you're leaving behind 'Stead of always thinking about the bottom line."enjoi

I owe the 'space a couple of blogs now. I have a lot of big things coming up in the next month. But today's blog will have a little less depth... but it is more timely and urgent. This blog is going to sound like a bunch of hype... but it's not sensationalism... it's just how I feel. Tonight one of the greatest artists in Dallas is performing live at the Granada Theater. Dallas Soul legend, Bobby Patterson is playing the Quick Halloween party with Shiboleth. This isn't hype or hipness. This is the honest truth: Bobby Patterson is the real deal. I promise you that you have never seen a real live show till you have seen one of the talented soul greats of the '60's perform with a full band. Live soul music is unlike anything you have ever seen... and the purveyors of this art are quickly fleeting. Don't miss it. You may not understand it from my description, but you will once you witness it. Baby Obama Say "amen": "AMEN!"

For those of you who are not in the 'know' and don't understand why the Eagles of Death Metal and Hives show was so completely amazing, my friend http://www.myspace.com/ardroid">Amanda has uploaded a little clip from the show for everyone's viewing pleasure. This was the 3rd time i've seen The Hives. The first was at a small bar in Houston called Fat Cats (or mary janes depending on the week... ha) in 2001. Then I saw them in Oklahoma City... and The Hives consistantly put on one of the best live shows in rock... not to mention Howlin' Pelle Almqvist perpetually spews out some of the most ridiculously amazing stage banter this side of the glam rock era. Favorite quotes of the evening include: "Dynamite- invented in the 19th century by Alfred Nobel. The Hives - invented in 1993... by US!" "Perhaps you don't know how this works... when we stop making noise... you start making noise." "Now... i want everyone to jump up and down. you won't look any cooler if you don't do it. now you jump up and down because we are playing... and when we stop playing... you jump up and down because we are not playing." "I know there are MILLIONS of our fans in the Dallas area. Yes yes. MILLIONS.... but many of them could not make it.... prevented by school... work... and so on. But YOU... YOU ARE OUR DISCIPLES. And we are sending you out tonight... And you must tell everyone about the next Hives show in Dallas so that everyone can come."
CLICK HERE FOR THE VIDEO FROM HOB ON MYSPACE VIDEOS.
The show was great. i had a quasi-reunion with old Gypsy hands... and saw a LOT of old punk kids from the days back at RedBloodClub/Vicious/Jump Boys shows. It reminded me of that era... of the late 90's and early 2000's as the indie and punk scenes were united by a mutual fascination with angular garage rock and the disco-punk revival. It's inspired me to break out all my old cds from the strokes, hot hot heat, japanic, the smugglers, the agenda, the riverboat gamblers, the liars, the yeah yeah yeahs, clinic and all of that. It was nice. I totally geeked ou in the pit... which is something i haven't done since... since... The Briefs? The CIrcle Jerks? man... i honestly can't remember. but I felt like a total fan boy. It was a major flashback.... in a good way.

Corrupting the News…
'Hear ye, Hear ye – the McRib hath returned!'
This proclamation has saturated recent headlines, as 50s of millions of Americans disregard staggering gas prices and SUV over to the nearest McDonalds in celebration of the 38th (121st, according to some reports) return of the paramount union of barbequed quasi-pork and slightly accelerated food service.
This phenomenon hasn't gone unnoticed by the presidential candidates, with both senators John McCain and Barack Obama now vying for support amonsgt what poondits are labeling the "congested arteries voters."
Experts predict this demographic - predominately made up of people who can name between 8 and 12 items from the McDonalds dollar menu - will undoubtedly determine this year's election.
"You don't live to be 72 years old without occasionally snarfing down half a dozen McRibs," said Tabitha Anderson, a McCain spokeswoman and self-proclaimed rib sandwich aficionado. "Senator McCain's adoration for the McRib is well documented."
With McCain having seized control of the sleigh ride of change to the White House, the Obama camp has vowed not to repeat its mistakes in judgment leading up to the national conventions.
"We carry Obama onto a stage made for Caesar, and (the McCain campaign) lures an anonymous snow queen down from Alaska amidst a snowstorm of ass-kicking soccer-mom energy and voluptuous body parts," said Alec Sheen, Obama spokesman and self-proclaimed fiend for any woman who could have arguably been cast on Northern Exposure. "It just doesn't make any sense. We can't f*** the McRib up, too."
While campaigning in Memphis today on Obama's behalf, former President Clinton assumed command of the national McRib debate: should it be permanent or simply an occasional breath of fresh air.
Only the plan backfired wildly.
"Now I love McRibs more than anybody – anybody – even more than Barack," Clinton said. "Gosh, do they even eat McRibs in Maui or Kenya or wherever he's from?"
An ever-eager McCain campaign seized the opportunity presented by Clinton's blunder, as the republican nominee made an unexpected stop at a Detroit (well, a half-way-respectable suburb of Detroit) McDonalds.
"I will be forever grateful for the Big Mac," McCain said. "It was the last American pizza I ate prior to my terrible experiences as a captive in Vietnam. Only thinking of eating another one kept my will strong."
There were no immediate reports of whether McCain later acknowledged the Big Mac was not, in fact, a McRib…Or that neither sandwich had been introduced prior to his captivity, making the claim utterly impossible…Or that neither sandwich is a pizza, prompting more questions of his "touch" with reality. Any reality. Even his own.

seriously... i heavily consider it... the whole notion of becoming vegan or vegetarian really weighs heavily on my conscience. why should we resort to violent means just to solve our hunger problems? why whould i have to kill something on a daily basis, just so i can eat? i think about it. i think about refraining from animals and animal bi-products. putting a end to my consumption of beef, chicken, pork, fish, turkey, hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, bratwursts, chicken nuggets and sushi and then... ...just when i'm almost convinced that i could go meat free... ...THE MCRIB IS BACK. continuing on that wave of spicy bbq sauce, you are now reading the blog of the proud owner of several new domain names: http://www.mcribisback.com http://www.themcribisback.com http://www.fortheloveofmcrib.com http://www.ilovemcrib.com holy crap. i'm awesome. p.s.... you get extra kudos if you can catch the correlation between this blog and my 'currently listening to' choice below.
