First of all, loved watching France bottle against South Korea. I can see the Koreans crawling all over Switzerland in the final game, while Togo will try to tackle Thierry Henry. Thierry doesn't like that sort of thing, so will spend the game loitering on the right wing pouting and being nonchalant. It was a harsh decision to have Viera's goal chalked off for no readily apparent reason, but what was the excuse for the rest of the game?
Ukraine gave Saudi Arabia a clonking, but then who doesn't? I can't see them not going through now... The Swiss game was as dull as ditchwater... They're a pretty average side really.
Didn't acheive much else today... Planning for the next update and playing FIFA 99 mainly. Exciting stuff...

Taped this one rather than watching, and saw it today. And oh my God, what an utter pile of rubbish it was. After RTD sorted it out a bit with the Christmas special and the first two episodes of the season, this was a huge disappointment.
I know the lack of involvement from The Doctor and Rose was unavoidable for production reasons, but this thing still seemed to be done very much on the cheap - there seemed to be a huge amount of recycled footage on show. Also, a large amount of time is devoted to showing us a) Jackie Tyler's a dirty old slapper who's alsmost certainy a regular in the pages of Forty Plus and b) Camille Codhuri really, really should jack this acting lark in and maybe see if she can get into Forty Plus herself. We knew both of these things anyway.
The script took themes from "Aliens of London" and "Boom Town" (being the one left behind, the impact The Doctor has) and thoroughly beat them to death here. There was a bit of 'subtext' on show - those tracking The Doctor were, like Clive in last series' "Rose" (seriously, this is like RTD's greatest hits. Without the "greatest" or "hits" bits, anyway. More of a contractual obligation album?), parodies of Who fans themselves. It's ironic, really, that their quiet life as The Doctor fades from their lives their interest is revived by a podgy, preachy braggard obsessed with his own ego who saps their lives and leaves them wishing it had never come back. It doesn't help that the cast are uniformly unimpressive. Peter Kay's alright early on, but once he's in slap he gives his usual "I'm Peter Kay with a regional accent" bullshit and we all pray that this one will be over quickly.
There were just far too many stupid moments to list in this one. The red and blue buckets... The paving stone ("We have a love life" Hur-hur, Russ, you're such a fucking card)... No-one questionning the dwindling numbers of LINDA... The LINDA thing itself... Kay getting a Yorkshire accent when he stops pretending to be a human... The lame comedy in the launderette... Oh, and this being the man behind such adult drama as Queer as Folk and The Second Coming, obviously someone gets absorbed into the alien's arse. LOL.
The worst Doctor Who episode since... erm... well, I think we have a new champion.

Time got in the way of that noble effort there.
Missed a game for the first time yesterday (experimenting with having a social life, dontcherno), and the Czechs lost to Ghana. Yayyyyy. Same happened at 2002 when I missed the Japan vs. Turkey game, and the kicking, spitting bastards won. Team USA America World Police U-S-A U-S-A played fairly well against Italy, though. Deserved a point, would have won if their players could tackle. Good ol' Brian McBride, though. I mean, what was De Rossi doing? Everyone knows he can't be harmed by conventional weapons. That group's wide open now.
Just saw the Japanese draw with Croatia... that's two groups wide open, though Japan should have, again, won. Now they have to beat Brazil (not impossible) and, assuming Brazil beat Australia, hope Croatia also beat the Aussies, but not by much. Tricky.

England 1 Paraguay 0 Wow. Crazy, crazy game. England spend first 10 minutes all over Paraguay, and get a deserved own goal (if there's such a thing - Beckham's free-kick would probably have pinned off something), panic the Paraguay 'keeper into injuring himself, and generally look like they're really going to work Paraguay over. Then England get bored, sstart playing on the edge of their own penalty area, Owen limps off after 56 minutes, Crouch is left utterly on his own and they're lucky to get the three points. Like watching inept paint drying. Still, I suppose it's best to get the bad performance in early, and to come out of it with three points. Hopefully they'll all get a kick in the arse soon.
Sweden 0 Trinidad & Tobago 0 I thought Trinidad were going to get slaughtered, and to be honest it was only a bit of luck that kept them in the first half. Zaltan Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larssen were both being a bit too flashy too early instead of getting the game away, and after the first twenty minutes T&T just kicked everything in yellow. Then Avery John got send off for about his 9th bookable offence, and they calmed down and just started really frustrating the Swedes, and hitting them on the break to boot. Carlos Edwards, Shaka Hislop and Dwight Yorke (as a holding midfielder player, believe it or not) were all superb, but the Swedish underperformed badly (Ljungberg, I'm looking at you...), and then panicked for the last 20 minutes while T&T just got more resolute. A deserved point.
For the group, England will probably jam their way past Trinidad and Tobago, though the Caribbean side will be well up for it, especially with the amount of players based in England. That'll be England through to the last 16... Second place, based on today, will be close. Sweden should buck up, but T&T probably won't make it - if the shockwas really on they'd have squeezed a goal today... Fail to win against England (a draw would, frankly, be an amazing result) and they're basically out as I can see Paraguay just being ruthless. It'll go to the winner of Sweden v Paraguay - the Swedes, just, as I expect they can get a result against England.
Argentina 2 Ivory Coast 1 Best game of the tournament so far, just two fairly equal sides going at each other like mad. Possibly because of the cooler evening? Argentina look really good, and were unlucky to have a goal ruled out. Possible winners, certainly. Ivory Coast were good too, if just about outclassed, and can possibly take second place in the group.

Yahey! Through a not-at-all begging post at the TF Archive message board (I'm Cliffjumper...) the frankly awesome Inflatable Dalek sent me a message offering to swap the greatest Gobot of all times, Psycho, for some Doctor Who books. Needless to say, I accepted. Psycho is awesome: -

WORLD CUP! Just, y'know, in case nobody had noticed. Yeh, you might have missed it.
Germany 4 Costa Rica 2 Funtastic! Two teams who can't defend, but can attack. I'll quite like the Germans if they keep playing like that... A couple of pearlers scored as well, a really exciting game. Both will be slaughtered as soon as they come up against opposition who don't stand back and let them shoot, though.
Poland 0 Ecuador 2 Very, very disappointed with the Poles, who didn't come alive until the last 10 minutes, and then let Ecuador grab a second on the break anyway. To be fair, Ecuador's centre-halves were giants, and both goals were well-taken. Not a great game when they just shut up shop in the second half, though.
Overall, I think the group could yet be close... Germany can still organise their defence, and Poland could yet get a cutting edge. I'd bank on Ecuador to beat Costa Rica, but Poland v Germany could go either way and it's a three-horse race.

Having missed my weekly update for the first time last week, to the horror and astonishment of absolutely no-one, I managed to cobble one together this week. I'd like to say it's double-sized to make up for it, but that'd be a total lie.
Counter-X V1.5
Lots of Doctor Who
Next update is already in progress... A couple more Who reviews ("Robot" having been already started), some comics reviews (Warren Ellis' Excalibur run being first on the list), some more old TFDB reviews, and probably some more music reviews. Might then start on getting my own webspace, so I can upload more galleries of pictures of women. Ohhh yeh.

Yes! Finally got Planetary #25 in the mail today. An excellent little issue, with some great scenes for John Stone, and finally a fully-fleshed out origin for The Four. Some excellent visuals as well, especially the parallel Earth's remarkable design.
One real issue to go... With Dowling's power, I don't see how they can actually stop him and Kim Susskind. It's going to be a Hell of an issue.

Well, it turns out Tripod didn't delete my account after all, they had just gone a bit rubbish. Three day response for customer service? That's rather poor... It'd resolved itself by then. Needless to say when I start paying for hosting, they won't be getting my money.
If Defcon's a "bounty hunter", who the fuck is paying him?

Bloody Tripod are saying my login contains "invalid information", but my site's still there. Make your bloody minds up, are you binning the thing or not? I can't even put up the completed "Leisure Hive"/"Power of the Daleks" reviews there at the moment. And I was thinking of going on one of their pay packages come the end of the month, and the pay packet. Bastards. I can't even log in and stick a redirect on the front page for when I get a new host sorted. Bastards.

David Tennant either needs to paste his hair to his skull like the Thin White Duke, or wear a fucking hat. His finely teased studenty hair is a nightmare for yer underskilled Photoshop hack like myself to cut out. So I've lopped most of it off. Still, that aside, moderately happy with the end result: -
