I’m writing to tell you about a new social networking site
for local theatre.
http://bakersfieldtheater.ning.com/
It’s kind of like a Facebook (or Bakoptia) website just for
Bakersfield drama.
I have not had time to keep up with TheatreAddict.com lately
and I am hoping this website (if we use it) will become what I had hoped TA
would be. And that is…a way for local
theatre people to network, share information, and promote their shows.
You can post blogs, pictures and videos and there is a
calendar which editors can add show dates & auditions to.
If you have any questions you may contact the creator of the
website, Tom Webster, at tom@makesthingsgo.com

A year or so ago I was contacted by a playwright, Jonathan Dorf, who had caught wind of a local high school that was producing one of his plays (without permission). This happens more often than it should and we had a little conversation back and forth about it. Schools often use snippets of plays to perform scenes and monologues for competitions, and sometimes even perform an entire play with copied scripts and no intention of paying royalties. It isn't always done with malice, sometimes people don't even know they should contact an author before using any of their work...but it is a big problem for someone who makes his or her living by WRITING! I told Jonathan that I would enjoy reading a blog or article about paying royalties from an author's point of view...and I'm sure many of you would as well. So here it is. To read the entire text visit his website at http://jondorf.com/news0209.htmlIt's about 1/3 of the way down the page.
Copyright infringement is a serious problem. How serious? Every year, the failure to pay royalties or purchase cast copies deprives playwrights and their publishers of thousands and thousands (if not millions) of dollars in income. My play After Math has been produced without permission 5 times (that I know of), and both Thank You for Flushing... and High School (non) Musical have had their own infringements as well.
Most people who break copyright law do so out of ignorance. The antidote for ignorance, of course, is information. Feel free to print out this guide, forward it, pass it on to everyone you know who directs or produces plays. If you're a student, show it to your teacher.

Sheila McClure is looking for an older actor, playable age 50+, to play multiple roles (every actor plays multiple roles): Quaker man (Isaac Van Wagener), homeless man (called Old Man in the script), an Auctioneer at a slave auction, a minister, and other small "Man" roles (1st Man, etc.). Not a ton of lines, but enough that I can't just cover it w/the men I have. All actors remain on stage the entire time. Oh, and has to learn 5 songs -- no solos, just group stuff; spirituals sung a cappella.
Rehearsals run 6pm - 9pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday this week; 7pm - about 10:30 Sunday through opening next week. Board night is Feb. 12, and we open Feb. 13. Contact her at shelagh_mc@mac.com or shelagh_mc@yahoo.com or call her at 477-1226

From bakersfield. com... go and fill out a comment about John. http://www.legacy.com/bakersfield/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId=121959791 John Robert Loughman, actor, true master of his craft, loved, admired and respected beyond all measure, took his final bow on Friday, December 19, 2008, in Newport, Oregon, with his beloved wife, Kathi by his side. John was born on June 1, 1943, in Ventura, CA to Lawrence and Nokomis (Surrell) Loughman. He was raised and attended Villanova Preparatory Academy in Ojai, CA, and over the years enjoyed many excellent adventures, from playing baseball with a championship team to working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Alaska. Although John had many "day jobs" through the years, his greatest love, and the work that fed his soul, was acting. And while he worked in film, TV, radio and print, he found his true calling on the stage, and he enjoyed walking the boards for over 40 years. He was well known and much loved by fellow actors and audiences from Texas to Colorado, from southern Calif | |
