I’m writing to tell you about a new social networking site for local theatre.

http://bakersfieldtheater.ning.com/

It’s kind of like a Facebook (or Bakoptia) website just for Bakersfield drama.

I have not had time to keep up with TheatreAddict.com lately and I am hoping this website (if we use it) will become what I had hoped TA would be.  And that is…a way for local theatre people to network, share information, and promote their shows.

You can post blogs, pictures and videos and there is a calendar which editors can add show dates & auditions to.

If you have any questions you may contact the creator of the website, Tom Webster, at tom@makesthingsgo.com

A year or so ago I was contacted by a playwright, Jonathan Dorf, who had caught wind of a local high school that was producing one of his plays (without permission). This happens more often than it should and we had a little conversation back and forth about it. Schools often use snippets of plays to perform scenes and monologues for competitions, and sometimes even perform an entire play with copied scripts and no intention of paying royalties. It isn't always done with malice, sometimes people don't even know they should contact an author before using any of their work...but it is a big problem for someone who makes his or her living by WRITING! I told Jonathan that I would enjoy reading a blog or article about paying royalties from an author's point of view...and I'm sure many of you would as well. So here it is.

To read the entire text visit his website at http://jondorf.com/news0209.html

It's about 1/3 of the way down the page.

Copyright infringement is a serious problem. How serious? Every year, the failure to pay royalties or purchase cast copies deprives playwrights and their publishers of thousands and thousands (if not millions) of dollars in income. My play After Math has been produced without permission 5 times (that I know of), and both Thank You for Flushing... and High School (non) Musical have had their own infringements as well.

Most people who break copyright law do so out of ignorance. The antidote for ignorance, of course, is information. Feel free to print out this guide, forward it, pass it on to everyone you know who directs or produces plays. If you're a student, show it to your teacher.

Sheila McClure is looking for an older actor, playable age 50+, to play multiple roles (every actor plays multiple roles): Quaker man (Isaac Van Wagener), homeless man (called Old Man in the script), an Auctioneer at a slave auction, a minister, and other small "Man" roles (1st Man, etc.). Not a ton of lines, but enough that I can't just cover it w/the men I have. All actors remain on stage the entire time. Oh, and has to learn 5 songs -- no solos, just group stuff; spirituals sung a cappella.

Rehearsals run 6pm - 9pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday this week; 7pm - about 10:30 Sunday through opening next week. Board night is Feb. 12, and we open Feb. 13.

From bakersfield. com... go and fill out a comment about John.

http://www.legacy.com/bakersfield/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId=121959791

John Robert Loughman, actor, true master of his craft, loved, admired and respected beyond all measure, took his final bow on Friday, December 19, 2008, in Newport, Oregon, with his beloved wife, Kathi by his side. John was born on June 1, 1943, in Ventura, CA to Lawrence and Nokomis (Surrell) Loughman. He was raised and attended Villanova Preparatory Academy in Ojai, CA, and over the years enjoyed many excellent adventures, from playing baseball with a championship team to working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Alaska. Although John had many "day jobs" through the years, his greatest love, and the work that fed his soul, was acting. And while he worked in film, TV, radio and print, he found his true calling on the stage, and he enjoyed walking the boards for over 40 years. He was well known and much loved by fellow actors and audiences from Texas to Colorado, from southern California to the central Oregon coast. He was instrumental in helping start Pyramid Productions, Stone Soup Theater, the Phoenix Theater and the Empty Space Theater, all located in Bakersfield, CA, where he and Kathi lived for many years. He also performed for several seasons with the Kern Shakespeare Festival, and was much in demand by many other theater companies. John and Kathi met on stage when they were cast in a play together almost 20 years ago, became engaged while rehearsing another play, and were married on stage in their original production, "The Nuptial". John and Kathi moved from Bakersfield, CA to Waldport, OR in 2004, where he became active in the local theater community, last appearing on stage in the Red Octopus production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The roles that brought him the most joy were Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Best Friend, and Mentor. Anyone who knew John knows he was a perfectionist, especially when it came to his craft. He was also grumpy, irascible, cantankerous, opinionated, crotchety, and stubborn, but he was never mean or unkind to anyone. He was alwayss available and more than willing to offer a smile, a joke, support, encouragement and guidance, and never hesitated to play the part of mentor and teacher. He was the kindest, gentlest, most loving man we've ever known. He was a class act, and a rogue. He made us laugh. John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jean. He is survived by his wife, Kathi of Waldport, OR; daughter and son-in-law, Meghan and Mark Dee, and granddaughters, Madison and Mackenzie of Norco, CA; son, Robbie of Ojai, CA; stepson and daughter-in-law, Michael and Dusti Durham, and granddaughter, Clover of Portland, OR; brothers, James of Oxnard, CA, Steve of Reno, NV, and Larry of Ojai, CA; in-laws, Bill and Mary Martin of Waldport, OR; and many other family members and dear friends too numerous to mention. Production meetings for cast parties and/or services are on going, and dates and times will be announced. Come, gentle night, come, loving black-brow'd night, Give me my love; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night... Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to they rest. I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through belief in the threeness, Through confession of the oneness Of the Creator of Creation.

"Artuary" Will be a kick-off event to introduce our local arts scene to BECA; Bakersfield Emerging Contemporary Artists.  The mission of BECA is to promote emerging visual artists in Bakersfield. By offering seminars, classes, group exhibitions and quarterly trips to contemporary galleries, we hope to both inspire the creation of art, and advance the careers of local artists. BECA will serve as a stepping stone between the small-town art community within Bakersfield and the contemporary scene in California and beyond.

The Artuary event will be a full day of classes, networking, and entertainment, provided FREE of charge by the members of BECA, and by The Basement.  All local visual artists are encouraged to participate  (Artuary, like BECA, is geared toward helping adult emerging artists.  However, if mature teens are interested, and they have the permission of their parents, they are also welcome to attend the Artuary event.).

Classes will include how-to's on framing, hanging hardware, putting together an artist's portfolio, artist's statements, resumes, self-promotions, and much, much more.  Networking opportunities will include information on upcoming events around town, where emerging artists can strut their stuff and get noticed!

Todd Powers (Foxglove Photography) will be offering a one-day special, to Artuary participants who need professional photographs of their artwork.  If you'd like to get some killer photos of your art, for your portfolio, bring your work with you to The Basement on February 7th.  Throughout the day, Todd will be working with artists; only $5.00 for up to five pieces of artwork, and you get a disk of your final photos to take with you.

As if all of this weren't enough; an evening of entertainment is being planned, to round out the event.  We encourage all Artuary participants to stick around, enjoy the live entertainment, and further network with their fellow artists.

Anyone interested in volunteering, donating, or contributing is encouraged to contact Jen Raven ... the more, the merrier!
