The Youngest Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Ever, 19-Year-Old Bradley Roy Steps Up for 2010 Season

Bradley Roy of Lancaster, Ky., who celebrated his 19th birthday on Nov. 2, signed up Monday for the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series, becoming the youngest angler at the sport’s highest level of pro competition.

“I know I’m young, but this has been my lifelong dream,” he said. “This is what I want to do as a career, so this is a great opportunity, a jump start on my career.”

Before Roy, the youngest Elite rookie had been Texas’ Corey Waldrop, who turned 20 early in the 2008 Elite season. Others included Luke Gritter of Kalamazoo, Mich., who was 22 when he competed in the 2009 season, and Elite pro Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., who at 23 was the youngest on the 2007 Elite roster.

Roy was still 18 when he qualified Oct. 24 for the Elite Series by finishing fifth in points in the 2009 Bassmaster Southern Open trail. Only the top seven qualified.

Of the hundreds of 2009 Bassmaster Open anglers, only 21 earned invitations for the 2010 Elite season (seven from each of three Open divisions). Some anglers try for years to be among those who move up, but Roy advanced after his first Open season.

But Roy has been something of a wunderkind in BASS competitions.  At age 13, he was the 2004 Bassmaster Junior World champion in the 11-14 age group. At age 17, he outperformed many other Kentuckians to earn the right to be the sole representative of his state in the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship.

In the Elite Series, Roy knows the game will become considerably tougher.

“Obviously, I’m going to make a lot of mistakes, but I try to learn from my mistakes,” he said “Hopefully I can learn, then adapt quickly.”

Another new challenge will be handling a grueling, eight-event regular-season schedule. The first tournament will be the March 11-14 Duel in the Delta out of Stockton, Calif.; the season closer will be the June 17-20 Sooner Run on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma. (To compete in the two-event Elite post-season for 2010 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year honors, Roy would have to be one of 12 qualifiers.)

“The travel, I’m used to,” Roy said. “The thing I worry about the most is the lakes I’ve never fished before.”

While pro fishing is his chosen career, college is still in his future. He said he plans to continue with his online course work in business and marketing.

“That’s how I fished the Opens this past year. It might take longer to get a degree, but it’s how I can continue my education while I fish the Elites,” he said.

He’s now taking fall semester exams, all while working on building a stable of sponsors. He said he has verbal commitments from several companies and is close to a boat wrap.

“This is my dream coming true, so I’m working hard, staying positive, and putting all I can into making sponsorships happen,” he said.

DB AND K-PINK: “DB,” as in award-winning Bassmaster.com writer and self-described non-angler Don Barone, and “K-Pink” as in Bassmaster Elite Series pro and Bassmaster.com blogger Kevin Short, are working on a book together.

Word is the book will be based on several pieces on which the two collaborated.

MONROE ON MAKEITPRO TV. Bassmaster Elite Series pro Ish Monroe will be appearing on MakeItPro TV on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. ET. The interview will be streamed live here.  Interviewing Ish will be award-winning journalist Gary Baumgarten, formerly of CNN.

DEAR SANTA: We have been good anglers all year (so far). All we want for Christmas is for you to consider a wardrobe makeover. Maybe, just this once, you would consider ditching the funky red suit, and perhaps wear BASS Stuff instead?

That red material is not, we are sure, a breathable, UV-protective, antimicrobial, 3xDRY fabric like so many of the BASS Stuff pieces now on sale available here. And on sale means a deeply-discounted sale, as in less-than-half-price.

And Santa, not to be too personal, but can we talk about your accessories? The rib-digger black belt? The skyscraper boots with black marking soles? (Not on my dock or boat, thank you.) And the hat? Truly, that floppy look does nothing for you — hides your twinkly eyes, your best feature. Could you just take a look at the great BASS Stuff hats?

And hey, you could be stylin’ underneath the red suit! Just in case you get to stop by a party or somewhere fun on your way home to the North Pole. And layering would keep you warmer. While we assume you are indeed magical (the chimney stunt? the flying reindeer? The ’round-the-world-in-one-night act?), you must get cold from time to time, so check out the BASS Stuff outerwear page, especially the fleece vests, turtlenecks, hoodies and windshirts (like the other items, all highly discounted).

Oops, almost forgot to mention: A lot of BASS Stuff comes in extra-extra large sizes. Hope you are not offended by this straight talk of wardrobe makeovers. If so, we have 24 days to make amends. Whatever happens, we still will leave cookies and milk for you under the tree.

— From your fans down here in BASS land

P.S.: Hey, Santa — you know those anglers who asked you for a Bassmaster or BASS Times subscription? No sweat. You can get subscriptions for them online, 24/7, at Bassmaster.com.

P.P.S: Need any sleigh-stuffers? How about BASS 40th anniversary pins? There’re some left (a steal at $1.99 each) on the BASS Stuff accessories page. And there are really nice BASS logo tees and shirts. Mrs. Santa would love one.

My thoughts exactly while filming this. Wolak and I timed it at under 3.5 seconds to be up and flyin. But most impressive was turning a screw in a shallow spot and hooking the wheel to get on plane. Half turn and we were up. It's a crazy good outboard. And a 4-stroke means you'll save hundreds every year on oil.

Louisiana’s Judy Wong Claims Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship; Georgia’s Pam Martin-Wells Wins Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year

Martin-Wells is Second Woman in History to Qualify for Prestigious Bassmaster Classic

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. — Pam Martin-Wells and Judy Wong shared a fishing spot for three days at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship on Louisiana’s Cypress Black Bayou Lake. When it came down to trophies and titles, they split them.
Martin-Wells won the coveted 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year trophy and the 2010 Bassmaster Classic berth and new Tundra that go with it.
A four-time WBT winner from Bainbridge, Ga., Martin-Wells is only the second woman in history to qualify for the sport’s biggest event. Kim Bain-Moore of Alabaster, Ala., was the first, winning the 2008 Angler of the Year and a berth in the 2009 Classic.
“Words can’t describe this,” Martin-Wells said. “I can walk through the living room and see a commercial on TV for the Bassmaster Classic – I freeze, watch it and get goose bumps. Now I’m going to get them for real. It’s going to be an awesome experience.”
After Day 2 of the three-day competition in Louisiana, it was evident that Martin-Wells would take AOY honors, but she did not consider it her prize until the title was officially awarded.
“With these ladies, you don’t know what can happen, they’re all excellent anglers,” she said. “Juanita (Robinson) is a friend of mine, and she’s very consistent, and she had me scared. The first day when I had 13 pounds, it helped. But I wasn’t comfortable until they announced it.”
Wong’s victory Sunday was her second championship title, her first coming in 2007. Her prize this time was $5,000 and a Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $55,000. With a win last month on Tennessee’s Old Hickory Lake, the championship gives Wong back-to-back victories on the tour.
Along with the AOY title, Martin-Wells took second-place honors in the championship. For that she took home $4,000 and a $39,000 Skeeter/Yamaha boat rig.
With a three-day weight of 36 pounds, 10 ounces, Wong bested Martin-Wells by almost 5 pounds. Finishing in third was a hard-charging Robin Babb of Livingston, Texas, with 30-15. Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, was fourth with 23-5.
Robinson made a run at the AOY title, staying close to Martin-Wells since the season opener, at which Martin-Wells took the win and the AOY points lead. Coming into the Louisiana championship, Robinson had a shot at overtaking the points leader, but her fourth-place finish wasn’t enough.

Wong, 55 points behind Martin-Wells coming into the championship, did all she could to catch the leader, including leading all three days and collecting 15 bonus points. No deal; Martin-Wells was in second place after Day 1 and settled in for the duration.
“I came into this to lead all three days and win this championship,” Wong said. “It was unfortunate that I couldn’t catch her, but I did the best I could.”
Wong and Martin-Wells camped out on a short bridge throughout the tournament, each taking an opposite side. Both worked Gary Yamamoto Senko lures in the rocks, as well as crankbaits. Wong relied on a Rapala DT-14 and DT-10, while Martin-Wells used an Academy H2O Express.
The co-angler competition turned into a rematch between 2008 champion Barbara Gaskins of Suffolk, Va., and 2008 runner-up Monica Altman of Angier, N.C. But Altman made it to the winner’s circle this year with 27 pounds, 0 ounces, earning her a $40,000 Triton/Mercury rig and $3,250.
“It’s always been my goal to make it to the championship and be the best that I can be,” Altman said. “I just came here to get five keepers each day and enjoy being here.”
Most of her fish came out of reeds and grass, but casting to seawalls and docks also helped fill her livewell, said Altman, whose three BASS co-angler wins include the Old Hickory Lake event last month in Tennessee.
Altman finished 10 pounds ahead of Gaskins, who last year bested Altman by 1 pound, 5 ounces. Gaskins took second place with her 17-0 total, worth $2,500 and a $35,000 Skeeter/Yamaha rig.

Rounding out the top five in the co-angler division were Colleen McKay of Worcester, Mass., with 13-14; Donna Newberry of Van Buren, Ark., with 13-11; and Diane Smith of Fayetteville, Ga., with 13-5.
Newberry emerged as the top co-angler of the season by earning the most points through five events.
The complete 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year points will be available, once finalized, at .Bassmaster.com
Local sponsors for the Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship include Shreveport Regional Sports Authority.

Otis Darnell Wins on Miserable Potomac Weekend

By Gary Conner

10/17/2009 – La Plata, MD – (As a side note we inducted one new member into the ABA Hall of Fame this weekend, congratulations to Joe!) On what turned out to be a miserably cold weekend Otis Darnell of Linden, Virginia was undaunted.  The weather did not cooperate for the majority of the field, but when Otis saw the cold, wet, windy conditions move in he was delighted.  He said I love fishing in these conditions.  Most people let the weather put them off their game, but I love these conditions.  Obviously, he was comfortable – he brought in the winning weight and captured the Northeast Regional Championship of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, Operated by American Bass Anglers, winning a new Triton 18 Explorer with Mercury 115 HP Optimax outboard and MotorGuide Trolling motor.
After day one, Otis found himself almost two pounds behind day one leader, David Wright.  His confidence remained high after finding quality fish during an entire week of pre-fishing.  His practice had netted him fish to seven pounds, so he knew he was on a good pattern and merely had to stay focused.  And focus he did.  He covered lots of water throwing shallow crankbaits in depths to six feet.  When I asked how tide affected his pattern he said it really did not play a factor, and he caught his fish all day long.
With 25.59 pounds, the win earned Otis the Northeast Region Championship and the Triton, Mercury and MotorGuide package, valued at just over $24,000.  The remainder of the top five boaters were David Barker of Emmitsburg, MD, with 25.19 pounds, Robert Grike of Dumfries, VA with 23.89 pounds, Mark Angelus of Chantilly, VA, with 22.54 pounds and Mark Inman of Greensboro, NC with 22.54 pounds.
On the co-angler side of the competition Junior Allen of Biscoe, NC emerged victorious with six fish that weighed 13.44 pounds.  Second went to Paul Ranslem of Centreville, VA with 12.20 pounds and third was Anthony Scrivens of Sunderland, VA with 11.62 pounds.
Anthony Scrivens also had big fish of the tournament with a 7.98 pound largemouth he caught on the second day, which earned him co-angler lunker worth $555 for day two.  On day one, boater David Barker had big fish with a 6.47 pound largemouth that earned him $960, and co-angler Lenny Baird earned $555 for a 5.64 pound fish.  For day two, boater Carl Hughes had big fish at 4.58 pounds, which also earned him $960.
The top 50 boaters and the top 50 co-anglers from this tournament now have the opportunity to attend the national championship at Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Arkansas the first week of November.  There, boaters will compete for a first place prize of $100,000 and a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic.  Co-anglers will compete for a first place prize of $50,000.
The northeast region tournament crew would like to congratulate all the winners and wish them all the best of luck at the championship.

Congratulations Otis and the rest of the field on surviving these two days of rain, wind and cold.

Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series 2010 Season Details
ATHENS, Ala. – American Bass Anglers announced today the 2010 The Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers schedule and details. The series in 2010 will feature the same 21 divisions, 105 events as in 2009.  Information on the series and the 2010 season will be available at www.weekendseries.com.
“This year the anglers gave us great feedback and we have integrated many of their recommendations into the 2010 season.  To insure we continue to offer a guaranteed purse one enhancement to next season will be a guarantee of $2500 first-place for the Co-angler to accompany the $5000 guarantee for Boaters based on a minimum field of 100 boats,” said ABA President Morris Sheehan. “The boaters will also be eligible for $5,000 in Triton/Mercury/MotorGuide bonus money at each qualifying event and a $205,000 first-place payout at the no-entry fee Championship plus the ultimate prize of an entry into the Bassmaster Classic®. This is the simplest and best method for the weekend angler to qualify for huge paydays and the Bassmaster Classic.”
First place at Divisional events can pay as high as $11,000 and $14,000 at the divisional championships. The total purse at the divisional qualifying events will be as high as $50,000 and $71,750 at the divisional championships. The payouts -- plus Triton, Mercury Marine and MotorGuide bonus money -- makes it easy for weekend anglers to cash in some huge paydays for one-day, low-entry fee tournaments.

Payouts are spread over 20 percent of the field. The top-40 Boaters and Co-anglers from each division advance to one of the no entry fee Regional Championships, where all anglers compete both days.
At the Regional Championships, the first-place boater will win a Triton/Mercury boat package. The top 50 Boaters and Co-anglers will advance to the no entry fee, $680,000 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship. The Regional Championship locations and dates are: Tensaw Delta, Oct. 22 and 23; Lay Lake, Oct. 15 and 16; DeGray Lake, Oct. 15 and 16; and Kerr Lake, Oct. 15 and 16. The Series Champion will advance directly to the 2011 Bassmaster Classic, which will be in New Orleans Feb. 18-20, 2011.
The relationship between ABA and BASS allows both organizations to introduce more anglers to competitive bass fishing. BASS and ABA lifetime members, as well as Federation Nation members and Triton Boat Owners receive priority registration into the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series.

(Sept. 19, 2009) – Tom Mann, Jr. of Buford, Ga., claimed the Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year title Saturday at the conclusion of the Walmart FLW BP Eastern Series event presented by Folgers on Clarks Hill Lake. The Angler of the Year title annually goes to the FLW BP Eastern Series Pro Division angler who has the highest year-end point total in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. Mann, Jr. secured the crown on Clarks Hill Lake with 20 bass weighing 51 pounds, 2 ounces at what was the final FLW Series qualifying event of the season in a race that was won by a mere one point and went down to the last day of the regular season.

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Mann, Jr. “My whole goal for this tournament (Clarks Hill Lake) was to secure enough points to make the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup in Atlanta, Ga. on Lake Lanier. To be able to fish the championship tournament in my home lake is just thrilling. I have fished a lot of tournaments on Lanier and I believe that ninth is the lowest place I have ever finished.

Mann, Jr. has been fishing for 26 years; his career earnings are over $730,000. He has fished in 97 events since 1996 with two tournament wins and 10 top 10 finishes. He will be the pre-tournament favorite going into the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup.

“I have worked hard all year long,” Mann, Jr. said. “I have pre-fished every event and to achieve my biggest goal is such a thrill for me.”

Rounding out the top five anglers in the Angler of the Year race were: Team Kellogg’s pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa. (728 points); Team BP pro David Walker of Sevierville, Tenn. (711 points); Team Kellogg’s pro Greg Bohannan of Rogers, Ark. (699 points); and Mark Rose of Marion, Ark. (693 points).

MONTGOMERY, Ala.. –  Living up to his storied reputation, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., closed strong on the Alabama River at the Bassmaster Elite Series Postseason, scoring victory at the Evan Williams Bourbon Trophy Triumph, which earned him enough points in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings to overtake California’s Skeet Reese.

The AOY trophy is VanDam’s fifth and second consecutive. With each accomplishment, VanDam advances his reputation as the best angler on the planet. The $200,000 top prize brings his career BASS earnings to more than $3.5 million.

“I’m overwhelmed,” said VanDam.  “You can do a lot of things in this sport but to the anglers, the Angler of the Year is the real deal.  Every time I win one of these, it makes me want to win even more.  It’s just really special.”

ESPN2 will carry all of the on-the-water action from Toyota Trucks Championship Week on The Bassmasters, which will air for three hours on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. ET.

At the start of Toyota Trucks Championship week, things didn’t look so promising for VanDam.  VanDam struggled out of the gate at the two-day Lake Jordan event, while Reese performed well.  As a result, Reese overtook VanDam in the AOY standings heading into the final leg on the Alabama River.

But VanDam developed a solid pattern in practice and smoked the field with 30 pounds, 6 ounces.  Still, Reese had a shot, needing a finish of fourth or better, but the 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion feel short in sixth.

“I’m utterly shocked right now,” said VanDam, who has three Bassmaster Classic victories.  “After the first tournament, everything seemed to go wrong and I didn’t think I had much of a shot.  But I knew I had to battle through it.  This format is definitely intense and things seemed to work out for me.”

VanDam had a spectacular regular season, winning a Bassmaster Elite Series event on Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake in April and stringing together solid finishes throughout the year to head into the postseason in the top spot in the AOY standings.

On Friday, a trio of Strike King baits yielded his 16-pound, 3-ounce limit.

Reese won the AOY in 2007 while VanDam took top honors in 2008.  Some would consider 2009 the ultimate match, but with both anglers at the top of their games, it’s easy to assume both will battle it out again in 2010.

While Reese said he was “disappointed,” he added that defeat this week was easier to swallow because he started the season by winning the 2009 Bassmaster Classic.  Reese also had a steady season after earning the Classic trophy, which is not an easy accomplishment considering all the demands that come with the title.

“I had a great season but I wanted to have a spectacular season,” said Reese, who will defend his 2009 Classic crown at the 2010 edition in Birmingham, Ala., and Lay Lake next February.  “I’m sure I will be riding the emotional roller coaster over the next few days, but right now I feel OK.”

Reese’s strategy on the river was different than that of anyone else in the field.  He ran north and put all his marbles into one spot.  Reese said the area had quality fish but he missed a few opportunities, which ultimately cost him.

“Yesterday, I missed a few bites and today I had an opportunity for 14 pounds,” said Reese.  “But I just couldn’t get the big ones in the boat.  I will definitely have flashbacks of a 4-pounder I missed early this morning.”

Reese was looking to become only the second angler in BASS history to score a Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and a Bassmaster Classic trophy in the same season.  That feat was accomplished in 1995 by Mark Davis, a Mount Ida, Ark., Bassmaster Elite Series angler.

Finishing in third place in the AOY race was Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla.  In fourth, moving up from 11th to start the postseason, was Mike Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J.  Randy Howell of Springville, Ala., took fifth.  The full standings can be found below.

The field qualified for the Postseason through their regular-season performances on the Bassmaster Elite Series.  The top 12 anglers in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings after the regular season had their points recalculated and took those scores into the Postseason. Each leg of the Postseason will be scored on a 50-point sliding scale.

Anglers land two world record trout
The 36th week of 2009 will forever be known as "Trout Week" in North America.
On Sept. 5, Canadian angler Sean Konrad obliterated the IGFA all-tackle world rainbow record with a 48-pound rainbow out of Saskatchewan's Lake Diefenbaker, eclipsing a 2-year-old record held by his twin brother.
Four days later, retired construction manager Tom Healy eclipsed the world German brown mark with a 41-pound, 7-ounce monster on Michigan's Manistee River.
Two trout, 89 pounds, less than a week apart. Here are their stories:
